Beautiful, and great for a day trip, but there's not a whole lot to Congaree in comparison to other National Parks.
I've heard this is one of the best spots for bird watching, in the area, so I'm sure my mom would love it, but my preference is for the dramatic views and topography of places like Yosemite and Yellowstone.
It was cool to really be in the forest, though. Seeing trees and how they live in floodplains really gave me the feel of what it's like to be a tree. You can really see them grabbing the ground with their roots, sucking up water and nutrients. It's quite a cool perspective.
I'd recommend seeing the park by kayak. It's a great way to be immersed in nature, and allows you to quietly slip through the woods so you can get a glimpse of the natural wildlife without disturbing the woodland creatures in their home.
The park has only a few kayaks and canoes available, so book well in advance or bring your own. Also, they only offer canoes and kayaks on weekends, so plan accordingly.
This has to be the smallest national park. But it is the only one in South Carolina so I gave it 3 stars. It has creeks and the Congaree River to canoe on. There is also a boardwalk that makes a 2.4 mile loop through a forest area and swamp land area with some of the tallest trees on the east coast. Make sure you bring bug repellent because they will be after you.
