Last week I went to Coney Island without leaving Massachusetts. How? I went to West Newton!

This is my favorite place to go for a quick bite in this area. It's right down the street from my internship, and I've never had to wait too long for service. The owners are very nice, and love to chat up their patrons. He serves the ice cream, coffee, soups, and frappes while she makes (and totally talks up) the sandwiches.

Oh, the sandwiches. What sweet, delicious sandwiches. My favorite by far is the Tonno Tuna. A bit redundant in nomenclature, but if you don't remember it for its redundancy then you'll certainly remember it for its awesomeness. Tuna, chopped onions, bits of green pepper, capers, olive oil, and chopped pickles are sandwiched by two perfectly portioned pieces of lettuce, then surrounded by a square roll. By far my favorite sandwich. When the tuna drips out of the sandwich and onto my plate, I look both ways to make sure no one is watching - then I grab it with my fingers and scarf the rest of it down. I will not waste a *single morsel.*

I also tried the overgold turkey, which is also very delicious with provolone cheese, lettuce, sliced tomato, and mustard. The roast beef sandwich was just okay, but had a pesto spread that gave it that extra push into "mmmmmm, this is pretty good."

The ice cream is very tasty, though I must admit I've only tried the coconut and the cookies & cream. There's a lot more for me to try, but every time I tell my colleagues that I'm going to Coney Island, I get the "die of jealousy" glare. (It seems like everyone in my office is on a diet. Could it be because of all the ice cream they ate from here? I wonder.)

The owners have been nothing but nice to me, even tossing in some candy into my take-away bag without me noticing. There was one time when my bill was an off number, like $9.15 or so, but he handed back the extra dollar and just took an even nine bucks. Wow. Someone who finally understand my peeve of inconvenient change! And I find it very difficult not to like a lady who calls me "hon" in a very natural, unaffectative way.

You know how you find that video game you've always wanted, and your hands sweat so much as you clutch it to your chest as you make your way home on the T, and you can't wait to pop it into your console to play? That's how I feel about these sandwiches. I get giddy with delight thinking about how much I'm going to love this sandwich when I get back to the office. Deadlines? Who cares! Usability issues? No problem! I got my Tonno Tuna, and that's all that matters.

One Saturday afternoon after lunch at The Local my girlfriend and I felt like having something sweet.  So we walked around and found Coney Island Ice Cream & Cafe.

This little shop confuses me because at first glance it didn't strike me as an ice cream shop or eatery.  Most of the time it is usually quiet or empty and I've never seen customers eating anything but ice cream.  The giant white board behind the counter displays a big but limited ice cream selection which dwarfs their food items.

The staff here is friendly but can come off a little on the strange side.  The few times I've visited the gentleman whose waited on me attempts at being humorous but ends up making me feel awkward.  This alone has made me hesitant to visit again because I don't enjoy feeling uncomfortable.

As far as the ice cream goes it's just okay.  I've experience much better tasting treats at other similar shops and for less.  On one visit I decided to take a break from the ice cream and try one of their special fountain drinks.  Being a big fan of Raspberry Lime Ricky's I thought why not see how Coney Island's stacks up against the competition.  Instantly they failed because it wasn't a well balanced combination of sweet, sour and ice.  Within two to three sips it was already watered down.

Being the son of a father who own his owned chain of successful ice cream for many years I like to think I have a good pallet.  In my experience smaller, independently owned malt shops usually have a better quality of ice cream because it's not tainted by mass produced brands.

Coney Island is worth giving a try for a quick fix but I wouldn't expect anything to write home about.

Honestly, I'm pretty amazed at the low scores some people are giving this place.  The only thing negative I can see here is the decor.  I have been here a number of times, and each time the guy behind the counter was super friendly, and very helpful.  I have also met the owner who went out of his way to say hello and be personable.

And their ice cream?  Phenomenal.  I love ice cream.  I love Cabot's, I love Lizzy's, I love Christina's in Inman, I love JP Licks, etc.  This place has them all beat.  The texture is smooth, and the flavor is perfect.  Rich without being overwhelming, present without being too subtle.  Their chocolate - just plain chocolate - is like a whole new flavor I'd never experienced before.  As is their oreo and coffee and blueberry.  Those are the only flavors I've tried so far, but each is fantastic in their own right.

Anyway, I logged in to Yelp expecting to see other raves about this place, and was completely amazed to see a couple single or double star reviews.  I think you should go there right now and add your opinion after your experience, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Great ice cream and frappes. The ice cream is top shelf. It does cost a little more than Friendly's but hey it's West Newton and the quality is high. Also, the service is very friendly. My son loved it too.

I was torn between the oreo ice cream and the coffee heath frozen yogurt so I tried a spoonful of each.  I knew fair well that the Oreo would win (gotta have the real thing) but even right after tasting the ice cream the frozen yogurt was still amazing.

The boyfriend got a hot chocolate, which was rather bland but it hit the spot for what he wanted.

Service was a little slow, there was just one guy behind the counter who was working as fast as he could but it wasn't quite fast enough.  There were about 6 people in front of us and the line took about 15mins.  Service was friendly, just don't go here if you are in a hurry.

We needed to stand because the place was packed (mostly other people waiting to go to the movies) but the few tables were all that fit.  If you need to sit down and eat your ice cream you might want to check out White Mountain Creamery, where seating is abundant, but it didn't feel too awkward to stand and eat in Coney Island.

EDIT: Went back, there was no line but it still took a minute to get 2 coffees.  The boyfriend asked for a scoop of ice cream in his.  I assumed that they would charge more, even though she didn't say anything, but I didn't think that they would charge for a whole small ice cream.  OUCH.  When modifications are going to cost more than $1 PLEASE tell your customers!

Okay, the sign says "SUPER PREMIUM ICE CREAM".  So why does it have chucks of ice in my scoop of super premium ice cream?  Yes, you are velvety smooth and I like the over 40 choices. And your scooper girls, are sweet and friendly.  But nothing can be done to overlook this blatant flaw.  We tried 4 flavors, strawberry, chocolate, mocha almond, and vanilla.  All had the little chucks of ice.  I'll go back a second time (give everything a second chance right?), if I'm in the area, but don't go out of your way.

Tasty ice cream. They also happen to have great cupcakes and a decent tea selection if you go there on a cold winter's day.   I love the micro sundaes because I love sundaes but can never even make a dent in the giant sundaes at Cabot's.  Cabot's is more of a fun place to go, but I honestly think Coney Island has better ice cream.  Sometimes the teenagers working there are on the surly side, but it's still worth it.   Stop by after a mess at Comella's or after a movie.
