THIS IS REALLY GOOD GELATO!

I spent most of my weekend this summer coming here, and I thought that for $5, I better get something good..Not only was I able to choose two flavors, but I could tell them which I wanted more of..My favorite is the watermelon and honeydew..The grapefruit and melon is good too....

You can sit inside and just people watch....THe gelato is fresh, you can actually taste the fruit...

VERY GOOD PLACE!!!

This is the closest in creaminess to real Italian gelato that I've tasted in the city.  Strange praise for an ice cream shop operated by two Argentinean brothers.  There is nothing Argentinean about this place, but if you close one eye and squint the other real hard, you can almost reconstruct the blue, white, and yellow Argentinean flag from the colorful ice cream scoops pictured out front.  Maybe not.

There are so many flavors here to choose from that I'm glad they're good with the sampling.  After some deliberation, I got the banana and dark chocolate.   Both were delicious and tasted like the real deal.  Given that I was with friends, I also had to try their ice creams too, because you know, sharing is caring, and if you don't pony up I will smack you upside the head.  Everyone's tasted great- the lemon sorbet, the blackberry- even the plain jane vanilla.

So I've been to the Chinatown Ice Cream Factory before coming to Cones. And I couldn't help but compare the two places.

Well let's just get to the obvious point: Cones tastes better. The flavors were strong and vivid while the sweetness was still mild and under control. and a light texture that's easy on your tongue.

Wait... that sounded odd...

The C-Factory's flavors were good, but everything taste way too sweet, so sweet that I actually threw away mine without finishing it.

A clean, playful atmosphere, a perfect place to bring your date.

Cones is on the slightly expensive side, but only slightly. But perhaps some of us may disagree. Maybe you could be saying to yourself that ice cream isn't worth this much to pay from your wallet.

Yeah, you may be right. Because hey, it's much more worth it to hold onto that extra $1.50 and visit the nearest Dunkin-Donuts and get yourself a nice glop-full of Baskin-Robbins, right?

After tasting these Gelatos & creams from Cones, you'll never be satisfied with those generic monkey-works. Listen here, readers of my review. I promise I'll make a satisfied Woman out of you. Goto Cones, try some of their flavors.

If you're still not satisfied, give me your number, and I'll take you out for the night. Deal?

I don't know what it is about this place, but it sure has gotten me all excited for another lick of their sweets.

Jokes aside,

Summer has past, and the heavy steps of winter's boots can be heard approaching the doorsteps not so far from this coming months of October.

So hurry, fellow metropolitans. Savor that last dollop of Gelato on your tongue today, because soon the snows will fall, and even the slight utterance of the word 'ice' will send quivers all over your pasty skin.

They've got a good selection of really creamy ice cream. It's on my top 5. It's right next to John's pizza and a few steps from Caliente. The prices are a lot more better than the gelato place 2 blocks toward 6th ave.

You'll be walking around the area so drop by after dinner or lunch. Parking is on the street, so it's better to take the cab or take the subway. There's always something to do in the area, make this place where you slow the pace and take advantage of the 2 sample tests before making a decision. I like the Vanilla chip and Corn.

Scoop of almond cream + breezy, lazy summer afternoon + stroll down Bleecker St. = New York, I love you.

Having devised my NYC trip itinerary completely around food (priorities, people), ice cream shop exploration was definitely near the top of my list. And the verdict: Cones definitely took the gold. My scoop wasn't heavy with sweetness, but packed with the just the right amount of smooth, nutty flavor. And the crushed almonds bits... ahhh. It took a helluva lot of self-control to keep walking away after I finished..

Just a few blocks down, Magnolia was overwhelmed with customers, but I'd take a heavenly scoop of anything in this store over their offerings aaaanyday. It wasn't the cheapest ice cream, but after having just drooled over purses that would cost me a month's paycheck, what's a few bucks right?

I think my love for gelato/ice cream shops goes up if it makes unique and interesting flavors. My love will exponentially increase if those flavors are good.

This place wins for most unique flavors.  Where on earth will you find CORN gelato????? It was mm mm GOOD. and marsala wine gelato?!? It's called like, za....zabai... zaba-something or other. whatever! it was zabalicious. They also had things like coconut, watermelon sorbet, hazelnut.... yumWOW!

I liked that review somewhere below that said she found the equivalent to the soup nazi because the guy who worked there told me I could only have 3 samples after I had asked to try a fourth, and when I sadly realized and asked him to reconsider and let me just try one more, he only did begrudgingly and henceforth perpetuated the new yorker stereotype by becoming impatient and short! I wish the owner that other yelpers were talking about was there. he sounds like a nice man! That's the only reason why I didn't give Cones 5 stars.

Tummy not feeling so Yummy.

I've been to Cones years ago and thought that while overpriced, the ice cream was good. But, just came back from a second go-round at Cones and I will not be going back.

First of all, the flavors are tasty and there is a good selection. But, they are extremely overpriced. I had 2 scoops in a cup and my boyfriend had 3 scoops and our total was $12.75! Worst of all, my stomach had the worst stomach ache after. I'm a big ice cream person and eat my fair share, but nothing has hurt my stomach this badly in a very long time.

It's not just me. I have a boyfriend laying on the couch with a bad tummy-ache right now.

Addition: I had to go out and buy a plunger after eating the ice cream. TMI? maybe, but had to share

I no longer would eat at Cones because I am now a vegan, but back when I ate ice cream, no place got better or even close to their coffee gelato.

The only flavor that I went for was their coffee. They've perfected it. No one can do it better than the one over here. Period.

I had tried the others but none really left me as gaga as the coffee.

I am in love.  Cones has edged out Sundaes & Cones for my favorite ice cream in New York, and Scoops (LA) and Bi-Rite (SF) to claim the spot of the best ice cream I have ever tasted in my 20+ years as an ice cream enthusiast.  This is ice cream that makes you temporarily lose control of mind and body.  Tourettes-inducing, infantilizing, discombobulating flavor.  To quote Chandler, it's ice cream to make a bishop kick a hole in a stained glass window.

I'm a sample whore.  Really.  Line up some novel treats and see if I don't sleep with whatever lies between to get to the other side.  As such, I was fully ready to dismiss and even dislike this place with its two-sample regime.  It turns out that it hardly matters, because I have gone enough times in the first fiery month of our affair to taste a whole range.

It was love at first hazelnut.  No games, no teasing - just bold, bracing, abandoned flavor that made me weak in the knees.  Cones churns smooth beautiful ice cream that you taste with every sensing nerve in nose and mouth as it melts slow and languorous on your tongue.

Hazelnut is my #1, but being for the most part a 3-scoops girl, I've been around the block.  I have yet to be disappointed by any of the thirds and fourths in our menages a quatres.  Sometimes I favor sensuous milk-laden scoops like almond cream, dulce de leche, yerba mate, cinnamon-dusted corn, but other times fluffy, flirtatious sorbets catch my eye, like fresh mango or bright bright grapefruit.  When I'm feeling extra naughty, I spring for the Johnny Walker kumquat, expensive, exotic, and sinful, and once in a while, I'll top it all off with house-made whipped cream.

If the gelato is my love, then the owners are my would-be in-laws, and I'm happy to say that they treat me right.  Like the time I came without cash, only to find out at the register that my plastic was no good.  The kind graying man told me to have a seat and take my time finishing my ice cream before worrying about finding an ATM.  Or the time they forgot to give me my whipped cream until I came back from a block away, too lost in bliss to notice for minutes.  The lovely man gave me a double portion of topping and two free samples as a show of good-will, along with warm smiles and gentle words.

Me and Cones.  Cones and me.  Till death do us part.

Selecting an ice cream flavor is a personal affair, but here the corn ice cream is so special that you must try it. Unfortunately, the inexorable sea of students and drunkards who flow down Bleecker don't have the palate or the interest to try this hidden gem.

Because of this and because the corn is the best flavor offered, I always make a point of ordering only this and then congratulating the owner for this flavor and thanking him for continuing to stock it. He is rightly proud of this fine creation.

An ice-cream fanatic friend recommended Cones, but I can honestly say - eh! Being from the Boston area where lots of independent & home made ice creameries set up shop, this was nothing noteworthy. In fact, it was not even destination-worthy. It was simply ok.

Flavors were not strong, texture was creamy but in an average way. For me, not worth the calories. I threw half away.

Mind-blowingly good ice cream, generous portions, nice people, lines less unbearably long than Grom on hot / weekend days.

Fifth star withheld only because their pumpkin ice cream - which is what God would eat if He enjoyed ice cream and happened to find Himself on or near Bleecker - is a seasonal flavor, and the withdrawal symptoms after several months of daily doses of that particular variety of cinnamon-topped awesomeness are both intense and crippling.

It's been so long. I tend to be repetitive with desserts but on a short-term basis - next month I'll start fiending for something else. At this moment I crave for the hazelnut at Cones, which means I will start my little phase with Cones again. It's so creamy and rich with the non-milky after taste. On the pricier side but it's still a tasty treat.

It unpretentiously, yet clearly beats the closely located and much hyped "L'arte del gelato", which is not very much to say.

However, at least portion sizes are much larger and the establishment  does not undeservingly bestow upon itself the mantle of Italian gelato gurus, like those other guys do.

Good job overall. Pass.

Stellar ice creams and sorbets with a good variety. I am a huge fan of the Pineapple sorbet. It has a delicious texture that reminds me of Ambrosia with chunks of pineapple in it. The Canteloupe was the more disappointing having a more melon-y vegetable like flavor.

Also, they are very kind with samples, so that you may try before you buy. This is always the sign of a classy ice cream establishment.

As for the Ice Creams they have exotic flavors you're less likely to find anywhere else, and corn. Corn ice cream kids. is it any good? Maybe I'll bring along a pack of dairy pills and try next time....

Heidi Klum eats Cones :))

They have pretty wierd flavors. One of them is made with whiskey -- which by the way if you want a sample of it, you have to pay a dollar because the whiskey is expensive. All the other samples are free though. :))

They have this other flavor called Corn.. which tastes like corn. Supposedly, the Brazilians love it. It's pretty good for a sample but I don't think i could sit through two whole scoops of it.

I had the watermelon which was pretty good. It was really sweet though.. or more so than I expected from watermelon.

The chocolate ones-- varieties ranging from regular, white to dark to blah blah -- looked really good. My friend tried the dark chocolate and said it was really rich, which just by even looking at it you can tell it is rich.

The regular sugar cone, which is one flavor and two scoops, is $4.25 with tax and everything. If you get cup -- depending on the size -- or the waffle cone, the prices differ by very little.

It's worth trying. :))

I have found the ice cream nazi!!!

I mean exactly like the infamous soup nazi! I swear!  He had no patience for indecision, he did not like too much taste testing, and he never seemed to smile.  He also was trying to enforce order in the line - it was hilarious.  But my guy friends hated him lol.  Do not expect friendly service.

This place is cool in the sense that there are some very unique and interesting flavours.  Corn ice cream, zinfandel, yerba matte, and the list goes on.  I loved the variety, and I tried my friend's choices and fell in love with the corn gelato, with little pieces of corn, it was like frozen, creamy corn muffin - yum!!  My choice, yerba matte, was not as good as I had expected (and, yes, I do like actual yerba matte, so I know that flavour).   I do not know why I did not like it, it was just not right.  So this place is definitely hit or miss.

The biggest drawback to this place: it is overpriced.  And, despite the pic of Heidi Klum on the window, not famous enough to be that pricey.

You small beautiful son of a bitch, you ripped the inner child out of my body and made it walk along side me as I toured Bleecker looking for a little action.

I was standing behind a tall gentlemen who proceeded to walk up to the clerk and point right at his face, and tell him in the most serious demeanor that he wanted one scoop of the raspberry (sorbet), one scoop of the mango (sorbet) and one scoop of the blueberry (guess which kind). He then took said product and began to eat it, as he did I could see the sh*ttyness of his day melt away.

...The clerk then asks me what I wanted. A cold sweat emerges from my brow. I can feel my chest start to tighten up a little. In front of everyone he's asking me, under pressure, to decide what will be the fate of my taste buds. And then, without even thinking I blurt out what can only be described as the perfect "When Harry Met Sally" moment, "I'll have what he's having".

The clerk gives me the slightest of smirks, grabs the ice cream scoop and proceeds to give me three shots of pure ecstasy, I almost had a full-bodied orgasm right there on line (as my readers know I have this experience sometimes).

Screw debating the price, $6.70 is nothing in the real world, a real world filled with harsh cruelties, corruption, betrayal, the Ice Capades...this brought out the inner child alright. He walked along Bleecker with me enjoying the solid tangy flavors of mango, the cool, smooth relaxing zest (what other time can you use that word) of blueberry and the fiery but icy passion of raspberry. Soon after I noticed that I was eating a dessert product again, which I said I wasn't going to do for a while (http://is.gd/H0Jn). But when you're faced with the choice of going into this shop or not, you really have no choice but to dig out that wallet and make the best purchase of a lifetime.

Cones, you are beautiful.

It was delicious! I had a creamy fruit flavored one in a cone and devoured it within a few minutes. Ugh, so creamy!

This ice cream is amazing - so many delicious and unique flavors it was torture to choose! The nice and patient owner allowed me to have various samples before I finally decided on yerba mate (like green tea) and tiramisu. Both were delicious! The ice cream is creamy, without being overly heavy. I will definitely be back for a serving of the corn flavor, the sample I had was delicious and he even went to the trouble of putting cinnamon on top of the little sample spoon!

My boyfriend says that out of all the gelato places he's been to in the U.S., this place is the best (and this boy has traveled quite a bit around the world and ate gelato every day almost twice a day during his mutiple weeks in Italy)!

Cones is owned by two Argentinian brothers, and as other reviewers have said, though they call it ice cream it's really gelato. The flavor is far richer, and the goodness is denser.

Last night my boyfriend and I shared a double serving of the mate ("maa-tay" - South American green tea) and the banana gelato. Although I am completely in love with green tea ice cream (and still long for Polly Ann's green tea ice cream back in the Bay Area), this South American green tea flavor was a bit too strong for me -- the aftertaste is REALLY bitter. A few bites into it, and it had lost its novelty for me.

However, the banana is INTENSE. There's really no other word to describe it. My lovely loves all things banana flavored, and when we sampled this, we knew this was his new love. It's more banana flavored than an actual banana (at least, one in the U.S. because as most of us know, bananas available here aren't always that flavorful).

We also sampled the corn (very... corny? Interesting) and hazelnut (TOO GOOD -- must get this the next time). I've heard good things about the white chocolate and the pistachio, so I am definitely planning on trying those next. Service was not the friendliest, but at places like this where I just take my goods and leave, I usually don't mind too much.

Cones will be my go-to gelato place whenever I am around. This place adds to reasons why I heart NY.

The place was dirty and the staff really annoying (they're definitely a bunch of clowns) but the ice cream was really good. We had the hazelnut and it was tasty!

Side note- the place is called "Cones" - shouldn't their cones be something special and not those crappy cones you can buy in the supermarket? Might as well be called "Generic sugar cones you can get anywhere"

I will have to go back and try the corn ice cream, pissed I didn't see that when I went.

So I'm chilin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool and I'm-- "OMG IS THAT CONES?!"

Yes, that was pretty much my reaction when I spotted this little safe-haven of ice creamy goodness. People talk about Cones like a war veteran from 'nam. "I remember when I went to Cones.. 110 degrees out, and there they were.. all 20, no 30! flavors. It cost me $4.25 and 5 rounds of napkins, but it was worth it. Ah, good times.."

The rules were made clear to me as soon as I walked in. "You get to try two flavors. Ask for them at the same time." My choices were corn and mango. Corn was rather amazing. Sweet, creamy, and.. well, corny. Ultimately I went with mango sorbet, which was very tasty and flavorful as well. I didn't notice any chunks of fruit in my serving, but it was still delicious. I have to say that mango doesn't go very well on a sugar cone, I'm not too sure what possessed me with that one.

Hand made fresh sorbet and ice cream with dozens of great flavors is difficult to turn down. I don't think anyone can walk out of here disappointed.

Um, I don't get it.  The ice cream's not bad, but certainly not the best I've ever tasted, not even in the top quarter.  The place is nothing to look at, kind of like they rolled an ice cream freezer into an abandoned store front and called it a day.  Cones offers pretty much the same flavors you would expect to find at any ice cream parlor in the world. That said, my pistachio cone was sickeningly sweet.  It ain't no Sundaes & Cones.

We were wandering down Bleecher and I fancied some gelato/ice cream and I thought 'wow, aren't I in luck as this seems to be the right street for it'.

Stopping at cones I noticed it had won some award in 2006 for best artesian icecream so it had to be good right? No. The ice cream was a frozen turd.  They had either not stirred it during freezing or had let it melt and refreeze as it was full of ice crystals. About two blocks down it went in the bin and the most satisfying thing about the whole 'Cones' experience was how I plopped it in from two metres away.

I would like to add that I was blown away today by the corn ice cream (better than you'd think). They even ask if you want cinnamon on your cone--and if you say yes, the guy always sprinkles it on evenly so that you won't choke on a mouthful of powder.

I also appreciate that they're open til 11 p.m. on Sundays so I was able to get my pre-bedtime ice cream fix (I made maple syrup ice cream over the weekend, but I really wanted some zabayone).

Try this place--you won't be disappointed. The ice cream is so so much better than that tasteless blue/white place down the street that shall remain nameless.

I came here several years ago and couldn't remember what I had, but I knew it was good! So I dropped by again recently and had a small cup with 2 scoops, one of the corn ("Brazil's favorite!!!") and one of the pear sorbet.

The corn was quite good, and not as corn-y of a taste as I had been expecting, quite unique.  The pear sorbet was light, fresh, not too sweet, and not too tart-y.  Overall, pretty mild flavors.

Definitely a treat on a humid summer evening! =)

After a terrible night at John's, we scroll across Cones- Artisan Gelato and Ice Cream. I couldn't resist! My sweet tooth kept tempting me! And my sweets urges could no longer hold back. I had to go inside and try out the different flavors. So between my husband and my siblings, we settled on Tiramisu, Almond Cream, and Zabayone (custard with marsala wine, how cool is that?). My next visit will definitely be the green tea and coffee mocha chocolate chip. Their flavors are off the hook and sooo good! And did I mention, 2 samples per visit... Yes, life is sweet!

Some of the best coconut gelato I've had outside of Italy. Good-sized portions, but pricey.

Recommend zabayone, choc chip mocha and hazelnut.  All super YUMMMAYYY... really nice people serving behind the counter.  Decor, on the other hand?  very blahhhh...... could use a serious makeover but a few mouthfuls of superbo gelato will help you look beyond that.

The ice cream is very good. A bit pricey but delicious and there is a good variety.
My main problem is that it never appears to be open.
I have only been able to catch this place open twice.
Perhaps they close for lunch, but there is no sign on the door indicating such.

Some people like the white chocolate.  Some people love it.   I thought it was just ok.  Weird, bacon-y aftertaste (I kid you not).  The white chocolate is better at Coldstone's (hmm, Coldstone's).

The hazelnut, however, was delicious.  Reminiscent of the hazelnut gelatos in Spain or Italy.

One time thing for me, though.

On every visit to NYC this year (this being my 4th) I've had cones at least twice each time.  Far from being a gelato connoisseur, this place appeals to me as being just about perfect.  The texture of every flavor I've had is smooth, just slightly gooey enough to hang off of your spoon if you don't get it all in that first bite.  The flavors are never too heavy, never too sweet.  My favorites?  Marscapone and banana in a cup.  Perhaps not the best sounding combination in the world, but it's been my go-to combo on the last 3 visits there.

Why not 5 stars if I love it so much?  One of the two brothers that operate the shop is incredibly rude.  I mean, I know his shop probably serves the best gelato in Manhattan (at least to me), but come on, I'm giving him $6 bucks ($12 if you include the cup I usually buy for my fiance) for 2 minutes of his time.  Perhaps he needs to take a break and have some of his gelato.  Certainly puts a smile on my face everytime it hits my lips.

Cones is the absolute standard for perfectly crafted ice cream.  I don't know how he does it.  Banana ice cream...so good.  Pistachio was always the weird flavor that my mom used to get when we were kids.  Now I'm softly whispering "half pistachio" hoping to avoid deserved ridicule.  Dulce de leche is technically illegal in NY given that it has more sugar than Bloomberg thinks is acceptable for us to eat...which is why it is so good.  The guy who runs the place is really funny and low key. You'd think that after going there for five years I would have introduced myself.  Oh well....I'm okay with "hey man".
