Conejito's is a dark old dive with cheap food and cheap drinks.
Sure the food's served on paper plates but I don't mind one bit because it's incredibly cheap. I enjoy their enchilada plate but everything else is tasty enough also.
Conejito's isn't a great date place but it's definitely a fun spot to hit to start off the night with your friends.
As long as you don't expect a very fancy restaurant, you'll end up loving this place.
Stefanie W. and I were up in Milwaukee celebrating her birthday. After experiencing a big FAIL at the restaurant we really wanted to go to due to lack of reservations, our Milwaukee friend suggested we go to this dive Mexican joint. It was for sure a dive but surprisingly good and cheap. I had some guac, 3 margaritas, and very tasty cheese and onion enchiladas with beans and rice for about $23 including tax and tip. Nice!
I'm very picky about Mexican food so 3 stars is a good rating from me. I'd give it a 3.5 even because the enchiladas were nice and cheesy!
Cheap, fun Mexican dive bar. Food is ala cart and not bad for the price (end up with slight stomach ache sometimes after here but it's worh it)! Love the tostadas... not a big fan of the guac though. Overall, a good time.
Conejitos is my favorite dive bar. It is crazy cheap. I don't know where you can get a top notch margarita for $3.50. One of the best menu items is the cheese enchiladas. They are so cheesy and gooey. I love the sauce. This is another place I always order stuff to go because then I have another good cheap meal.
My opinion is based on the fact that i always come here knowing what to expect. Your food is on paper plates and it comes within 5 minutes of ordering it. It is an extremely fun atmosphere if you grab a communal table in the bar. Pitchers of margaritas flowing all around you and everyone seems to be in a good mood. It is the definition of a dive Cheap food and cheap beer with regulars spread all around you. Go there with an open mind and in a social mood and you will not go home disapointed.
I can't believe I have never written a review of this place. No this is not the best Mexican food you can get in Milwaukee. But it is very good. The beans are not from a can. In fact I usually hate beans of all kinds but I love the beans at Conejitos. I know someone who knows the recipe and says the secret is ground chorizo. Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone else. The prices are very low. You can get a good lunch for two for $10 or less. I've never tried the margaritas since I usually only go for lunch but I will venture back some night and sample 1 or 6. Paper plates and cheap plastic cups remind me of eating at my Grandma Hernandez's. I've been to the heart of Mexico a couple of times and Conejito's captures the feeling of eating in a Taqueria in the not so great part of the rancho.
A dive at its best. The food here is cheap, good and fast. We typically come for the huevos rancheros on Sunday, but all their food is good. I love the chicken mole, tacos, tostadas and the cheese & onion enchiladas. The margaritas have gone up in price, but are still a good value for the money. They will mix the strawberry & lime together if requested. I've been going here since I was a kid, and the food has not changed.
Everything about this place is just okay. First, the service was shabby, especially waiting for the check at the end (which the server refused to split between two parties). No one checked on us after we got our food, which made me kind of angry, as I would have liked another beverage. And the tables are crammed way too close together to be comfortable for anyone.
On to the food: the chicken enchiladas left something to be desired. They were very cheesy and greasy, and overly oniony. The chips and guacamole were great, and I think I'd just order that for myself if I go here again.
If this is the "Gateway to Old Mexico," I want to bring my own food when I go to Old Mexico. The menu is inexpensive and greasy; options are pretty much limited to rice, beans, potatoes, beef, or steak; no white meat and no vegetables except on Sunday (when pork and huevos rancheros are offered).
That said, this is a cool old-fashioned spot. The charmingly diverse customers eat at the bar or at a communal table. Cheap beer helps to wash down the grease.
It's the perfect quick hitter mexican lunch bar. Eat a load of food at fair/cheap prices, pound down some good cheap margaritas, and head to your next meeting. Great for dinner with friends and family. You can buy several rounds of drinks, and feed everyone at the table without breaking a sweat. Food comes quickly. tastes great, and sits well. It's not for everybody, but I don't know anyone that doesn't like the place. Paper plates are a nice affect. It reminds me of barbecue in Kansas City served on a cafeteria tray as a plate with wonder bread. A place has to have it's MO (modus operandi).
Best place in Milwaukee for a Mexican food "experience." South side, paper plates, good hot sauce, outstanding tostadas, everything available ala carte, devastating margaritas, a juke box full of hoppy Mexican tunes, a stack of Onion and Shepard Express by the door, and a Star Wars Bar quality assortment of people. Great stop any time of day or night. I have been a 20+ year pilgrim and visit every time I am in Milwaukee.
Yes, the food comes on paper plates. No, the staff isn't particularly effective. No, it may not be perfect for the health conscious.
That being said, the food is very tasty and INCREDIBLY inexpensive and the place is charming as hell. If you don't like Conejito's, I probably don't like you.
I only tried this place once, but honestly . . . I thought it was not very good. Of course, I am a San Diego born and raised Mexican food snob, so don't let my opinion keep you from going and trying it yourself.
I didn't really like the idea of eating off of paper plates in a smoky bar room setting. It just seemed kind of dirty. Also, the food was pretty low quality. Re-fried beans clearly from a big time can type low quality. But for the price, you can't really complain.
Conejitos is great. The chicken mole or the bean tostadas are my favorite. Plate lunch is a meaty stew with green beans and potatoes served with beans and rice...it's a great stick to your ribs and take a siesta meal.
My son can eat their rice by the bucket full. Great customer service, SUPER cheap to rent for parties and delicious to boot. Just don't look at the carpet in the old bar.
I wish I could give this 5 stars, but I think food served on paper plates and a perfect rating is mutually exclusive.
It took me 4 years of rumors, but I finally went. And I love it.
I think everything on the menu is under $5, and everything I have had was very good. Kind of a depressing interior, but not too bad. And close enough to downtown to keep it in your back pocket.
Just go, and don't judge until you try. The rabbit is summoning you.
I love everything about this place. Smoky old bar with eclectic decor and paper plates? Why not? I've been to Mexico several times and yes, this place is pretty authentic. I appreciate the simple menu and lack of pretense. Leave your snob hat at home and give this place a whirl.
As much as I fear a place that serves food on a paper plate, I have to admit, it is pretty good and authentic.
Expensive nasty food, If your looking for Mexican go to La Perla or Botana's over on 5th and National.
For a decent, cheap, quick Mexican food lunch in an old-time Milwaukee bar setting, this is a landmark worth visiting--best with a large group of friends.
This place is awesome for a quick, cheap meal. You can get an entire meal for around $5 (plus their margaritas are pretty good). It is split into two sections, the old original part and the newer half. The old part is open during the day and then both are open at night. I love their bean tostadas!!! A great place to go to with a group of friends.
Fuck yeah, when I used to live in Milwaukee I would stop in on my way to work and get the "Mexican plate lunch'. Super good, and under $5. I believe it was actually $3. 75. Paper plates, extra tortillas, mm, mm, good...
