Portland, OR
To me, this is quintessential coffeehouse. Yeah, it's a little dive-y. But it's supremely local, neighborhoody without being too cool for school, and by god the make a damn fine cup of coffee. Twin Peaks damn fine. But while we're on that subject, let's set the record straight. There is no pie at Concordia and there hasn't been in the 3 years I've been going (sorry Ana M, you've gotten your places mixed up). Back to the coffee: the espresso is packed down properly and it's silky (silky!) so that all your lattes and americanos are outstanding.
I love that all walks of life come in and out of the place. Alberta Gutter Punks, seniors from Alameda, neighborhood families, singletons, couples, blah blah. You get the idea.
I am sad to say that the food is limited and is hit/miss. The vegan muffins are hideous. The breads are usually very good. The bagels are sustenance but not much else.
Oh, one last thing: They rotate the art that they sell which is fine - nothing unusual there. Except ONE time they had a whole Dr. Who installation. Are you kidding? How freakin cool is that? It was. It really really was. -

This is how coffee shops should be. Strange (and sometimes shocking) art adorns the walls. The baristas are super cute. But most importantly, the coffee is amazing.
They use Stumptown coffee and know exactly how to make whatever drink you are craving, or are happy to guide you in the right direction. And if you drink you're coffee there, it's in a big mug and they make the foam look like a leaf or something (I'm easily impressed).
Plus it's on Alberta, which is always a fun place to be. I love to come here with friends and spend hours chatting and sipping yummy coffee. -

Am I being punk'd here? Where's Ashton! No really, this can't be Stumptown coffee, It just simply can not! I love Stumptown coffee. I don't often drink my coffee black but when it comes to Stumptown I could, gladly. Upon taking my first sip I wanted to ditch it, big frowns. Sadly for me my plan for the day looked a lot like coffee and reading so I figured I'd chug it down regardless of taste.
A few things I do like about this place is that they have computers for customers to use which I think is sweet. They also bake pie, to bad I hate pie ( yeah, I said it. so what? ) but I can appreciate the effort. Another thing I like in theory is that they have live music. Not so wonderful if you're trying to enjoy a book in peace. But who can hate on live local music for free? Certainly not me. Not what I was expecting but lovely just the same.
I know, I'm always running my mouth about homey, quirky coffee shops but for me this place is missing the mark for me. Obviously the coffee is a miss but the ambiance is lacking as well in my opinion. Concordia is a bit dingy, like it need a big of TLC and some energy. -

This place just opened up a few months ago, and already it looks packed just about every time I walk by -- quite a feat for the coffee-shop-saturated world of Alberta Street.
These days I'm primarily a tea drinker, not a coffee drinker, thanks to a fickle stomach, so I had the green tea here. I can report that it was some tasty, loose-leaf tea (and served up in one of the most convenient tea-servin' mechanisms I've ever seen -- I always seem to get gooey bags or leaves everywhere). Servers were enthusiastic, friendly and funny. So why is this a four-star and not a five-star? Acoustics. I get that espresso machines are loud, and their hiss and whir is part of the reason to go out for coffee rather than make it at home. But the acoustics of this place make it even more difficult than you might expect to have an important conversation here -- particularly if you don't want to disturb your neighbors. -

Hey Yelp, why did you filter my review? There was nothing "fake, shill or malicious" about it. It was factual, fair and objective. Come to think of it, so were the other two reviews you filtered. So, unfilter 'em already...

This place changed hands recently. The coffee there sucks now. It used to be awesome but there are better options on Alberta.

With all the competition in the Portland coffee industry, i'm honestly not sure how this place is making any money.
I've been a few times, and have been very disappointed every single time. The outdoor seating is bare, if the remember to put them out in the morning. (3 times have i considered going to Concordia early in the morning and decided to skip it because tables were not set up outside.
The baristas could really work on their technique as well. Every time i've been in i feel like they couldn't care less about the quality of my beverage.
I hate to be disappointed, especially when i live so close to this cafe but will happily walk another ten blocks to random order, or Extracto for my coffee from now on. -

Stumptown coffee. Baristas who know what they're doing. WiFi. Dogs. Comfy space. Sometimes (Saturday or Sunday mornings) they have music performers (folk or gypsy jazz) who manage not to overwhelm or annoy. Good location. Nothing not to like. Not so much a place to find food, but a great place to relax and have coffee or get coffee on the go in the morning (they're quick).

Coffee is okay, but not great by any means. The buzzkill in this place is the dark, scuzzy atmosphere. Not a pleasant place to work, hang out, or meet someone.

Pretty unfriendly, hardly any food, overcharged for our coffee. If you don't really want to see or help your customers, maybe I'll be going to one of the dozens of other, friendly, good coffee places in the area.

So so coffee. Not a very welcoming environment, can't put my finger on it, maybe it's the lack of good light in the back? I like how there's more room to move and I like the window seat. Weak wifi connection. Nice barista when I went. With all the coffee competition on Alberta though, it's probably not somewhere I'd return.

It's good coffee, a comfortable place to read, study, or play in the internet. But far and away Concordia's best feature is the staff. They are the nicest bunch of people you have ever met and that's saying a lot in Portland. Surely hipsters often wind up behind the espresso machine, frowning and mumbling. Not here. These people will smile, chat with you, give you more hot water for your tea, and remember your name next time you're in. Gold star.

I love this place, and have been going there since the week it opened. I have spent thousands of hours working from there, laptop in hand, and loved it. It's not a fancy place or tries to be super chic, it's just a good coffee shop with nice people and a comfortable atmosphere. It's very real, very Portland, in my opinion. They make Stumptown coffee and do a good job at it. I have, and continue to, recommend this to all my friends in the Alberta area.
