Conan's is my new favorite pizza place in Austin!  I had never heard of them until a friend of a friend of a friend twice removed mention we give them a try.  Walking in I was greeted with barbarian pictures adorning the authentic wood paneling walls.  It was love at first glorious sight.  We ordered a 'Savage' special, deep dish.  I haven't had a better pizza in the past 5 years.  Price was on the average side, much respect.

My high opinion = gotta go deep-dish!

I've been here many times since having a bad experience. Veggie Supreme = Supreme.

Dig the booths, the wall art, the area 51 that still costs 50¢ and the awesome za by the pizziaoli.

Their pizza is the only pizza that actually feels and tastes healthy.  The crust is even whole wheat.  Unlike other pizza places whose slices drip some grease after being held sideways, Conan's pizza slices only drip tomato sauce.  :)  Unfortunately, it is not as tasty as those other less-healthy pizza places' pizzas.  Conan's is where I will go when I am in the mood for pizza

The unique wooden booths with artwork are a nice, quirky touch.  The service is friendly.  They have lots of unique pizzas at reasonable prices.  Most of their pizzas are deep dish Chicago style.  They also have a buffet with 4 or 5 pizzas and a simple but tasty salad.

The restroom is clean.  There are two arcade games.

Conan's is tucked in the northeast corner of the Terra Toys shopping center.  The shopping center sits on the Northwest corner of the Anderson Lane @ Burnet Rd intersection.  The back side of Conan's also faces Burnet Rd and you can enter that way, too.

Although it's one of the few places that knows what a deep dish pizza is the pie itself isn't very good. They use too much sauce and the pizza dough just didn't do it for me.  I'm looking for something a little more along the lines of UNO's but there isn't one in Texas.

I've been hearing about this place forever, finally tried it. I wanted to build our own but it would have been significantly more expensive for less toppings then a specialty pie. I ended up ordering a medium Savage with white crust instead. The pizza wasn't horrible, but it was meh. I was expecting this beautiful buttery crust and found the opposite. The pizza crust had no flavor and was dry. Sauce ok. Toppings were of mediocre quality. The pizza was small but weighed a ton. I thought it wouldn't fill the two of us up but it did. Overall, this place is better then chain pizza but wayyyyy over priced! $24 for our pizza! Not true Chicago style if you ask me.

Personally I prefer a thin-crusted pizza but Conan's does a decent job with the deep-dish.  We usually go for the lunch buffet with co-workers, for around $8 you get all-you-can-eat pizza and a small side salad.  The comic book / noir artwork on the walls and tables is awesome.

2011-12-29 Edit:  Knocking off one star because we had such a bad experience at the Stassney location.

For this review, I offer a short personal story.

I had a terrible day. I collapsed into pj's at 10 pm, no groceries in the fridge, no energy to go out.

I went to Austin Pizza's website for delivery, and discovered they stop delivering at 10, so I yelped other pizza places and found Conans.

They close at 11, so I wasn't sure if I would run into the same problem as Austin Pizza. I didn't.

Upon arrival, I hear a light "shave and a haircut" knock at my door. After my exhausting day, this instantly makes me smile. I opened the door to a smiling face. Hey Rebecca! he says my name like we're best friends. I wish I had gotten his name.

The entire 30 second encounter was friendly and genuine. It's the little things people, I had a terrible day and this guy is delivering me pizza ten minutes before the end of his shift with a big smile and a kind word. Even if the pizza is terrible, I'm already won over.

And the pizza wasn't terrible. It was amazing! He hands me the pizza and I'm instantly struck by the weight of this 10 inch box in my hand. I ordered the pan veggie pizza, and it is thicker than any pan I've ever had. It is DELICIOUS, fresh, and a lot of food! A medium pan could feed me for a week! Well... probably not that long... it's too yum.

My bad day has been remedied. My belly is full, and I feel I little shinier because of a really great delivery guy. For me, Conans got the big things and all the small things absolutely right.

The vibe of this place is great - very Austin and relaxed! We went to Conan's fairly often when we lived in Austin and we've tried pretty much every possible topping combination before "turning" vegetarian.

The reality is that their "bacon cheddar burger" pizza is freaking out of this world - 5 stars, and their "meaters" also pretty great. Sadly, their veggie pizzas just aren't as tasty - still good but just not as tasty - which tells me that their basic sauce, dough and cheese aren't working together to hold their own and rely strongly on the meat - which works brilliantly on the abovementioned  combos, but bottom line is that the vegetarian pizzas lack the pizzaz of the combo topped ones!

I have never actually stepped foot in the physical Conan's establishment, however I have ordered delivery from there twice now.  Both times, we were pleased...at first. It was the aftermath that wasn't so pleasant.

Each time after eating it, I got a terrible stomach ache. You may be thinking, but this girl may be sickly and have gastrointestinal problems all the time. But I don't. I assure you. In fact, I pride myself on having a stomach of steel, but something about the Conan's pizza doesn't agree with me.

Here's why I gave it three stars.    I love the whole wheat option, however their thin pizza is still so thick.  I like my pizza with a very thin crust and this is not Conan's style.   Conan's seems to not skimp on the toppings either, which is great.

Perhaps next time we'll go all veggie with soy cheese. That might  somehow make a difference in my tummy's reaction. It's all about the tummy, you know.

Had the margherita-style pizza with chicken added, and it was flipping DELISH!!!!! Hubby and I ate to excess, because it just can't be put down once you start in on a slice. Five stars for the amazing taste sensation!

But as you see, this is a three-star rating, and this is why. Hubs is newly diabetic, and has to watch his carb intake like a freaking hawk. We ordered the thin-crust, and it was a similar thickness to the regular crust you get from other places -not very thin at all! It was insanely delicious, just not the super thin crust we were expecting. Pizza has only just recently gotten to be included back in our takeout repertoire, and thin crust is the only kind hubs can eat if he wants more than half a slice before he reaches carb cutoff. One star gone for that. The other got axed because of the pricing. I realize it must be very expensive to run a successful restaurant, especially in this economic disaster we find ourselves in. But seriously, it's freakin' pizza. This is not  a porterhouse or anything approaching fancy/gourmet. Anyone who has seen the inside of the location can attest to that!! So I do feel like $45 for 2 pizzas is really just not okay, especially when one of those pizzas is plain cheese. While it was some of the best pizza I've noshed on in quite some time, it is still just pizza. A rose by any other name, and all that jazz. Five stars for the edible kickassedness, though! :) Just work on the pricing a tidge, and even the crust thing could be overlooked.

Savage!  Now *that's* what I'm talking about!  I have been a Conan's lover for more years than I care to admit to, and this is the location I keep going back to (mainly because it's closest to where I live and work and play).  There are so many memories etched into the walls of those booths...

But the pizza is what keeps me coming back - it's sooooo very good!  There isn't anything I DON'T love about a deep dish Savage (on whole wheat) - except the price.  It's too spendy for me to eat this pizza on a frequent basis (which is probably just as well, because I could really pack on the pounds eating here).  I'm generally NOT fond of leftover pizza, but Conan's is the ONLY exception - it's even fantastic the next day warmed up in the microwave.

I love all the dark wood, the pictures of barbarians and scantily-clad women with magnificent and improbable beasts, and the music posters from local venues, but honestly, it's getting a bit too run down and I think it might be time for an update.  That's all that's keeping this place from 5 stars from me.

I've been here three times, but only managed to eat once.

The pizza is ok. Maybe it's the best deep dish in Austin, but that doesn't say much, I guess. In my opinion, they are too light on the toppings for deep dish.

The first time I went, the service was great. Very friendly and quick. The second time, I left because the waiter guy was screwing around so much. I waited five minutes for service, went to the restroom, came back out and waited another five minutes for him to stop screwing around. Then I left.

The third time I went, they wouldn't sell me a pitcher of beer, insisting I buy by the glass. I've got better things to do, and better places to eat.

I'm going to give the UT location a try eventually. But, skipping the buffet with its skimpy toppings, and hoping for consistently better service.

Great family run place. The pizza is good if you like deep dish style. They have a bunch of different options including vegan and whole wheat dough (which is quite tasty). Great lunch buffet that will definitely fill you up. The owners are really great people, excited about their business and ready to keep Conans part of the Austin community.
I love the decor, sort of kitschy with a feel of the 70's still permeating the walls. It feels comfortable and cozy, not the cookie cutter get-in-get-out look of most other pizza places.

It has been a while since I have been to Conans Pizza and my recent trip didn't disappoint.  I visited this location several times before for lunch and I ate lunch buffet this visit as well.  Their pizza is a deep dish Chicago style.  I really like that they have whole wheat crust in addition to regular crust.  They also have a good variety of toppings and usually several vegetarian selections as well.  The day I visited they were serving their Don't Choke Art! Pizza which is topped with Artichoke Hearts, Spinach, Garlic & Sliced Tomatoes.  It was very enjoyable.  They only complaint I have is that it is too easy to eat too much of their great pizza.

Why is Conan's such a badass place?

    - Delicious pizza (fav is veggie on deep-dish wheat)
    - Completely awesome art all over the walls.  Totally completes the atmosphere
    - Neat layout with tons of secluded booths

Conan's *can* be inconsistent, so I gotta ding them a star based on that.  When they are in full-force, easily my favorite pizza in Austin though.

Tip: You can always get 2 dollars off a large deep-dish pizza by printing the coupon off their website.

I'm giving Conan's 3-stars with an option to earn back points at a later date.  I'm about truth in advertising, and the truth is their Chicago Deep Dish pizza is just a pan pizza, with thick crust and very little in the way of toppings.  Would have been much better off with a regular crust pizza, I'm almost sure.

On the plus side, it's a pretty cool pizza diner with a comic book art vibe, for those of you who like well-muscled comic book babes wearing fuzzy boots and britches.  (who the hell doesn't?)

Only other thing noteworthy was a rather grungy-looking, overweight employee whom I saw sticking his hand down the back of his pants, while working in the kitchen.  I couldn't say if it was a scratch...or...what, really - but I'd like to think there's a perfectly reasonable - and sanitary - explanation for whatever that was.  Yes, I would really like to think that.

I've always loved Conan's. This location isn't as cool as "the drag" loc, but it has its own thing going. I came here a few times as a kid, and always loved the fantasy art on the wall/tables. The only thing I ever remember having at either Conan's was "the Barbarian" which is a deep-dish supreme with everything on it. So this place is cool, but it kind of feels like a sports bar compared to downtown. It has some arcade games, but alas I have no clue as to what it's like now since I haven't been in 10 years or so.

The first time I heard the Eurithmics' "Sweet Dreams" I was six years old and sitting in a booth at Conans Pizza.  I remember this very clearly because the picture above our table was a Viking ship. It seemed to me at the time that it would be pretty cool "Travel the world and the seven seas." in a ship like that. I can still see that ship in my mind's eye whenever I hear that song. So I guess you can say that I've visited the various locations of this establishment for a loooong time.

As others have said, it's not authentic Chicago pizza and the sauce in not heavily spiced. For me this is a good thing because it allows the copious fresh toppings and excellent crusts to shine.

Our usual order is a large veggie one whole wheat crust with fresh garlic and extra mushrooms. Divine! The toppings are piled high with just the right amount of cheese to hold everything together without bogging down the pie. I adore the wheat crust which is substantial and flavorful, yet light and wonderfully crispy around the edges.

Service is usually quite friendly and laid-back. If you like your cheese a bit rare or extra bubbly, they've always aimed to please.

Hell is being forced to smell a Conans Pizza, but not be permitted to eat any.

I desperately want to give it 2 stars.... but the staff was just so darn cool!
Nice atmosphere.  Love the tucked away booths and fun wall decor.

    Cheese bread.  Good enough.
But the pizza... PUELL!  If I could have just eaten the sauce it would have been great.  The crust was a D+ at best.  The toppings were not so fresh and the cheese was minimal.

To top it off, my bill for 2 beers, 1 order of cheese bread and a large 2 topping pizza was upwards of $40.  I mean really.

I want a pizza place to call my own in Austin.... Conan's just isn't the one.

Fee fi fo fum, Conan's Pizza # 1.  Yes, I've been a regular at Conan's since that ridiculous Jack-and-the-Beanstalk-inspired  radio commercial aired in the late 1970s.  I keep going back because it is such a cool, laid-back, unique place that happens to serve really good pizza.  And going there makes me feel like I'm doing my part to keep Austin weird.

The pizza is simultaneously cheesy and saucy.  (Hmm, that is a great combination in a person as well as in a pizza!!)  When I go for the lunch buffet, I always try to order a slice that has just come out of the oven.  Cold Conan's pizza just doesn't have the same appeal to me that the hot has.

We ordered takeout at Conan's for Valentine's day. If you think that's strange, you haven't been married very long.

Conan's easily is the best deep dish I've experienced in Austin. The crust is very well done, it is flaky, tender and almost sweet. The toppings are generous and the sauce they use is very unique: kinda spicy, very tomaty- certainly tastes homeade to me.

My husband did not love their pepperoni; perhaps because it was under the crust and didn't get to get crispy like pepperoni should. It was kind of soft and soggy. I digress into memories of pepperoni...anyway.

Anyplace that is plastered with stills from Conan the Barbarian and plays Bjork at the same time scores two points with me, no matter if they serve sawdust. Lucky what they serve is much better. Looking forward to trying it again.

I don't care what anyone else says, this is the best pizza in Austin.  It doesn't compare to real Chicago-style deep dish in Chicago, but it's the best you can get south of the Mason-Dixon.

This location rocks because of its living testament to Conan The Barbarian, the booths that make you feel like you're hiding in your own private pizza parlor cave, and the fact that they have that nice crunchy ice for soft drinks.  There's also a buffet in the evenings.  Forget the salad; go straight for the deep dish.

Conan's also happens to be the only local Austin chain to forgo giving me the "shit-my-brains-out" treatment.  Thank you, Conan's.

I love pizza.  I really do.  But it's a rare indulgence because cheese usually makes me all congested and bleh.  But Conan's -- wonderful Conan's -- has soy cheese.  I'm normally not the hugest fan of soy cheese, but this stuff was delicious and melty, if a bit lighter than real cheese.

But obviously pizza isn't just about the cheese.  I got a thin crust wheat pizza w/ sausage, tomato, pineapple, and onion.  I couldn't really tell that the onion was there, but the other ingredients were quite prominent and yummy.  The crust was nice and crispy, not soggy like thin crust often gets, and quite tasty.

The atmosphere was decent.  Good music playing, pretty uncrowded for Saturday lunch.  Some noisy kids were about as we were about to leave, but I can't really blame the restaurant for that.

Definitely a good place.  I'll be back.

I wanted to provide an update to my review here-- I really wanted to try this again because my bad review previously made was based on them messing up my pizza.

This time, it was prepared precisely to spec (large savage, no jalepenos, no anchovies), and yet the pizza was still mediocre.  The toppings did not bind well to the crust, and the crust seemed drier and less gooey and buttery than you would expect from a good Chicago-style crust.

Also, this time I went to pick up the pizza, and it took a total of 45 minutes between my phone call to place the order until when the pizza was actually ready-- the last 5 minutes of those I watched my pizza sit under the heat lamp -- even asking an employee once if it was my order, and he said "No" without even looking at it!

Terrible attitude and service; very mediocre pizza.  What can I say?  I gave Conan's another shot and after another disappointment I have no reason to return.

$44 for a large and a medium pizza -- and a bad meal and experience overall.  Ugh.

Conans is yet another Austin tradition that has a sweet place in my heart.  And though I love it, I had forgotten about this location (even though it is blocks from my house) until tonight when my visiting-from-out-of-town (don't get mad at all my dashes Jaime) brother said, "is there an Austin-y pizza place close?"

I won't make the mistake of forgetting again.  Yes, as some have mentioned, it takes a while.  But HELLO... it's a freakin' deep dish pizza.  If you want a microwaved hot pocket, ask your mom or go to 7-11.  For those of you who have to microwave your pop-tarts (anyone a Brian Regan fan?) because they can't stand the 30 toaster wait, you SHOULD know that THICK things take LONGER to cook.  Seriously people.

Anyway, my pizza was AMAZING.  My brother raved about it, my two roomies each stole a piece and raved (both asked directions), and I had a great experience.  The staff was SUPER cool.  And I SO can't believe that they have a lunch buffet 11-2 M-Sat and like 6-8pm M-Th for like around $7.50.  That's SO cheap for this quality of pizza.  And until I can find a 24-hour buffet (I'll pay once, move in, and retire there), Conans will be one of my favorite all-you-can-eats (sorry again Jaime).

An extra star for the best ice in town.

And remember, THICKER takes LONGER to cook (which is why this concept will take a while to get through your skull if you were one who complained about how long it takes).  Keep cookin'... you'll get it.

    1) Not REAL deep dish.
    2) Mostly crust and sauce. Okay, mostly crust.
    3) Skimped out on the toppings.

Conan's, you have impressed me. I went for their lunch buffet, which is only available at select locations. I think the way it works is that each day of their buffet (M-Th), they have one pizza that is a Specialty one. I went on Monday. It was Meaters. You can beat the meat... relatively speaking.

The buffet was about $7 and it came with a salad. You can get as many slices of pizza as you want and they have a good variety, along with that specialty one i mentioned.

The only bad thing part is that the pizza is so thick and filling, you may not be able to eat more than 3 slices.

A very good pizza place and a hole in the wall for this part of town. The pizza can be quite expensive depending on what you get but they do have a cheap buffet Monday through Thursday for around seven dollars; all you can eat. I always get the Veggie medium deep dish on wheat. That is enough pizza for me whenever I like to indulge in my crave for something close to Chicago style pizza. The restaurant itself has its own charm with many paintings and design that looks like fantasy stuff. I'm not really into that but it makes it stand out. You have to ask for any side ranch and beware that you could be charged for it. To save your wallet it's best to get a small specialty pizza that is of your choosing or come in for the buffet. It's delicious and you will want more and get full. For local pizza in my neighborhood I go to Conans.
