    Ok..PLEASE READ the whole review!

First of all.... The place needs to have an extreme make over. Someone needs to yell " move that bus". They don't need to change the "decor", but they need to fix tables, flooring and replace some fixtures. Either fix your video games or remove them....

That being said...... The food is ridiculously good...top ingredients are used and you can tell. The staff is witty and a bit too cool for school, but it's been like that for 20+ years... They are obviously looking for this when hiring...They have a good time, but have never compromised their pizza... Very serious about pizza, very!

Anyone that says its pricy is comparing them to the over Pizza Hut, Dominoes or the $5 Little Caesar's Hot'n Sweaty.

Awful service - avoid at all costs.  I ordered the buffet and my wife ordered a pizza with vegan Daiya cheese.  The couple who came in right before us with their three kids waited nearly an *hour* for more pizzas to be made for the buffet.  They finally got fed up and demanded a refund, and the cashier refused to give them any kind of refund.  They ended up storming out, still hungry and out $50...

So after that whole drama we decided to just wait and see, and finally after 45 minutes the vegan pizza arrived.  I headed up to the counter for another slice from the buffet and there was *still* nothing there.  There were at least four or five people back in the kitchen, who knows what they were doing back there.  In the end the cashier donned an apron and made me a small veggie pizza herself.

The kicker was the TV that was blaring "Dumbest Motorheads 3" while we sat there waiting.  Redneck entertainment for a redneck restaurant.

I tried Conan's several years ago and I remember not liking it.  Go figure because it was delicious this time.

I really wanted pizza and I was close by so I decided to go ahead and try again.  Boy I'm glad I did.  It was a Monday night so I was pleased to find that a large thin one topping was only $9.99.  No I didn't eat it all by myself but I came pretty darn close.

I really liked the crust and that little twisty thing they do with it.  My only problem was how long it took to come out.  I guess I shouldn't complain because it was so good.  Worth the wait.  And to be fair, there is a sign that says it will be about 20 minutes.  My tummy is just so impatient sometimes.

The place is kinda old but I suppose that is just part of it.  And it was good good, isn't that all that matters sometimes??

Way too expensive and super bland. 8 slices for $24.95 not such a good deal! They also ran out of regular pizza dough. A pizza restaurant that runs out of dough....huh? They might as well run out of mozzarella cheese!

Not the cleanest place on earth. They really need to clean the whole restaurant. Could be a candidate for  the TV show "Kitchen Nightmares".
That said I have eaten at many Conans locations over the years and when the pizza is fresh and hot it is good. Wish they would get their crap together.

The location on Stassney needs some serious upgrades, but the pizza was off da hook!  Loved the deep pan pizza on the buffet.  Canadian bacon, bacon and pepperoni----saweet tha lick!  The staff was friendly and very helpful. Prices were great.  I will be back.

I love that they have whole wheat crust and vegan cheese.  And it was good.  But I think $25 for a medium veggie pizza and one happy hour priced beer is excessive.

One of the best pizza's I've ever had... and they have vegan cheese!! Being from Chicago, it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to pizza but Conan's comes very close in my book.

We order the Armadillo Garden Veggie, deep pan with whole wheat crush and vegan cheese. It was so delicious. It was extremely hearty and I was only able to scarf away two slices. The rest kept extremely well for lunch the next day.

Did I mention I'm vegan and they have vegan cheese. That's not the easiest to find when it comes to pizzerias.

It was a little pricey. It was about $27 (including delivery charges) for a large deep pan pizza and some garlic bread but it was worth it.

So for this Chicago boy, it's Conan's the next time we get hungry for some pie.

For the dinner buffet and the 80s pizzeria vibe it's worth the visit. However the deep dish is not my favorite and the toppings could be better.

    WTF?  Conan,  you Barbarian!!!

Tonight my husband and I went there for a post birthday meal of the buffet.  It was under 20 dollars for 2 people which gets you the pizza, salad, and drink.

    All of that was fine.

The dude avec la comb-over was such a tool tonight though!

I have never felt so uncomfortable in such a run down restaurant.

You see, there was a big group of birthday people there that had told me they waited an hour for their kiddo's pizza.  That's just not worth it.

    The kid was crying.

The comb-over man could have given an olive shit less and it showed.

He was such a smart ass to me that it just made me laugh.

Dude, take a week or ten off!!!  It's not the customer's fault that you don't have your pepperoni together.

I will say that the young boy and girls that worked there tonight really saved the place though...all onions considered.

If you are brave and want to wait for an hour for buffet pizza, then go here on a Monday night.

For that kid and his family, my condolences!  Good gaw!  And for the man who stuck out like a rotten anchovy in a strawberry field, please stop taking your life decisions out on unsuspecting innocent people in the form of whatever that was that you were serving...nobody wants seconds of that!

    Pizza out.

We recently placed an order for delivery from this location and because of this we're thinking about ever eating from there again. We placed the order and was told 45 - an hour for delivery...not too bad since this is honestly standard time for placing an order around 7pm.

Needless to say almost 2 hours later we still hadn't heard from the restaurant so we called and Julie made excuses that there were only 2 drivers and that she told us 60 minutes. Also, the comment was made, " what do you want me to do?". From my math 60 minutes does not equal an hour and 55 minutes. When we called back to get the GM's name she said she was not to divulge that information and if I wanted I could get a $10 credit on my next order -- I informed her that there probably won't be a next order so $10 would do me no good. She then went on to say that she had "been here for a year and she doesn't think she'd make a mistake like that". Not to mention the additional comment was made,"at least it got there and was warm."

Thankfully the pizza arrived still warm and to give the restaurant credit -- it did taste good....but the customer service received by "Julie" was unacceptable and left a bad taste in our mouths.

I've been eating here since high school and before that even.  It's always been a friends and family favorite.  I would give them 4 stars except that they do not deliver to my house just E. of IH35 off Stassney Lane, the very street they're on.  They deliver much farther north, west and south but not east.  So, for delivery I'm left to Mr. Gattis, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut and Milano's.  Sure, that's fine for the kids.   And I don't mind coming to pick up a pizza since it is right down the road.  I have to do this for Austin's pizza too.  I prefer places that are not box chain stores.  Again, Conan's would get 5 stars (and a minimum $5 tip like we give the other guys).  A large veggie supreme is still $24.95 plus tax, etc. so I figure it warrants a decent tip.  However, these days, i've just got in the habit of picking them up myself and saving delivery fees, tips, etc.

I am a long time customer and fan of Conans. I have been a loyal customer for over 20 years. I have lived in the area around the Stassney store for 5 years. I often pickup my order since I am so close. I always tip well, I am always nice to the staff..... Even though all too often they are high school kids that don't know or are too stoned to say hello and when they do, they mumble.......

Tonight I called for a pickup order of thin crust, I normally order the deep dish so I didn't remember what they called their thin crust. I made the mistake of calling it the "Regular Crust" and the guy on the other end of the phone (who I recognized as the manager, though i can't be sure) barked at me and said, "We don't have a regular crust, we have Thin and Deep Dish". I was so taken back by this I said, yeah the regular crust and again he corrected me in an even less friendly tone, "we only have Thin and Deep Dish"....... at which point I hung up to keep from laying into him about what and ass he was.

Really!! Is there anyone out there that doesn't know that if you have two kinds of crust, Thin and Deep, that regular means the one that is not deep dish? Maybe I am wrong, but the bottom line is it is not ok to be a jerk to a customer that has done nothing other than call a dish the wrong name.

I am so sick of these old school Austin establishments and new ones for that matter, that behave or allow their staff to behave this way. There are too many restaurants in Austin for this kind of crap and it is only a matter of time before these types of places are taken down by the competition that knows how to treat its customers. Austin has put up with this rude service for too long!!!!

Loved the veggie supreme on the wheat crust. The interior is old and kinda weird.  It's dark and the tables rock side to side.  Grab a booth.  The pizza was very good.  The veggies were a good size and the sauce and cheese were in perfect perfection.  The price is a little high, but it's OK once in awhile.

I've ordered pizza from here a few times and probably will stick with the Anderson location from now on.  They carry Daiya vegan cheese which is pretty awesome to be able to get a deep dish pizza made vegan.  However, the attention to detail at this location seems to be lacking.  The last time I ordered the pizza seemed to be pretty thrown together and was not nearly as crispy as a deep dish pizzas crust should be.  In addition, I had a coupon for free Daiya on my pizza but when I got home I noticed on the receipt that I was still charged almost 2 dollars for the topping.  $13 for a small pizza is pretty steep, I think I'll stick to Whole Foods or the Parlor for vegan pizzas from now on.

Being in the neighborhood last Friday, I decided to stop by for what I consider to be a reasonably priced lunch special for $6.95. It includes a drink, salad, and all the pizza you can eat. I had not eaten all day so was dismayed to see that there were only a few burned out slices of pizza left, so I took 'em.
9am Saturday wake up call...a PUNCH to the gut. It's for you!

-by Sat morning  I was spewing and heaving up bits of mushrooms until  late in the evening. Through the sweats and chills, all I could say in my delirium was something like, "bababa...911".
So unless you have a cast iron stomach or can eat pizza that very well could have been under the hot light since the 80's, I suggest you stay away. This lunch was anything but special.

The last lost secret pizza jewel in town.

Very distinct atmosphere. Everything from the floors to the ceiling is covered in wood paneling. I love to stop in here if I have some time between classes at ACC or just want some decent pizza.

People nay-say about prices, but I think it's fairer to say that Conan's does not sell themselves short. The buffet is a great deal as well, but it's worth you time and money to have them cook you up a pie fresh on the spot. You will not regret it. They've got some great beers for a decent price as well.

One other great feature this place has is that in my experience, the kids getting out of Crocket High across the street tend to skip Conan's to bother people at the Dairy Queen next door. This doesn't sound like too big a deal, but trust me, one visit to a restaurant over-run by rowdy high school kids will remind anyone how glad they are the high school days are dead.

Very signature feel of the place. Check it out.

Ahhh Conans brings back some sweet memories of high school when I played D&D with the neighborhood boys.  I frequented the Anderson location years ago and honestly I wasn't too impressed with the pizza.  But I loved me a Conans salad.  All that mozzarella would put me in a swoon.

Fast forward to the present.  I decide to give the south location a try.  Thanks to the reviews, I tried the wheat deep pan crust with mushrooms and olives.  It was heavenly.  The wheat and the tomato sauce make a perfect combination.  The cheese bread was OK, not enough bang for the buck IMO.  And yes, the salads are the same I remembered years ago....topped with oodles and oodles of mozzarella cheese.

Now if I can only find some boys to play D&D with me I'm all set.

    July 3rd Update

I finally calmed down from the June 8th debacle.  Really I was in desperate need of a pie and figured to try them one more time.  I'm glad I did.  It was good once again.  So, I'll put them at 3 stars.  Hopefully I never have a repeat of my June 8th experience.

    Update:  June 8th

I do not know what the hell went wrong tonight aside from everything.  The guy over the phone was rude.
It took longer than he said for the pizza to get here.
The pizza is HORRIBLE.  I've never had so much garlic in one bite ever.  I'm throwing the whole thing out.
The only plus is their driver.  He is a sweetheart and has been all the other times I've ordered.  Based on tonight, I'm never ordering from them again.

I'll leave my original review here, but I'm dropping it from 4 stars to 2.  If I would have never ordered from them before, it would have been a 1 for tonight.

    *******************
    My original, good review

    Wow.

1st of all, love the whole wheat crust option (we didn't have that in Orlando).

2nd, FAST.  they told me 45 min to an hour.  nope half hour.

3rd and THEE most important... YUMMY!!!!!

Definitely a relic from the 70s and 80s. The atmosphere didn't disappoint. They even had some of Frank Frazetta's Conan the Barbarian artwork up on the wall. Would you expect any less?

Thought it was really TOO pricy for a medium pan and 3 beers + tip. So much so I am embarrassed to write the total. Wasn't sure what the buffet deal was. Nothing was out, then it was but after I got my order. And it was all behind the counter. Not a great set-up for buffet.

I was sure this would be a draft beer sort of place, but alas no. Bottles only. I was hoping to kill a pitcher!

The deep dish pizza was reminiscent of Mama's Pizza up in the DFW area. Not the old 70s/80s Mama's, but what they serve up now in Plano on the buffet. My toppings of choice were pepperoni and jalapeno. The sauce was slathered on thick, which I like!

Doubt I'll go back just because it was so pricy, and that's why they get 2 stars. But the beer was sure good!

Walking into the Conan's Pizza located in South Austin is pretty much like stepping into a time machine and coming out in 1976.  Seriously I really don't think anything has changed at all since then.  The cheesy but fun Conan The Barbarian posters and other décor is probably the same, the recipe is likely the same, and the wild plants and shrubbery that hang all over the ceiling and line the joint are probably holdovers from that same era too.  I am pretty sure that those plants came to life and grabbed me while we were sitting and waiting for our pizza to cook.  It's just a weird, eccentric place that would probably freak out about half of the folks in Austin.

With that being said, the pie itself is similar to taste and texture to some Chicago style pizzas even though it doesn't have the look of it.   It features a heavy, bready dough that lacks flavor.   It was topped with a decent amount of mozz and a shit ton of pepperoni's.  But it really didn't matter because the crust dominated this pizza.  We really appreciate a thick-style pizza (see our review of the stellar 'Parlor' in Austin for instance) but they are tricky animals.  Thick pizzas don't have to be inherently doughy and heavy.  With the right flour, hydration %, and fermentation period they can be full of texture and flavor.  They don't have to hit your belly like an Ali punch and put you on the canvas for the rest of the day & night.  Well...Conans did just that to us.  I ate 2  1/2 slices for lunch and didn't eat again for the rest of the day.  I went into a pizza coma after getting back home.

Kudos for all of the Stevie Ray Vaughn clippings and pictures littering the place.  I am guessing he used to frequent Conans back in the day?  They even had a booth dedicated to him along the front wall.  Cool with me.  Bottom line...this is mid-west pizza being served in central Texas.  Period.  Bring your appetite and prepare to take a nap afterwards.  But sadly, it's not really all that good.

Takin' a breather on this stuff while I'm focusing on Weight Watchers but will occasionally splurge when I get the opportunity.

They also leave a $2 coupon and they never take it with them when they deliver.  That whole perpetual coupon thing, dontcha know.

I have been on a personal quest since moving from New York City to find a good slice of pizza in Austin.  I tried several "New York" style pizza joints, but none of them lived up to expectation.  I realized trying to find good "New York" style pizza in the middle of Texas is like trying to find a Redskin's fan in the middle of Dallas.  Maybe there is one out there, but it would be REALLY hard to find.

So because of this I decided to try a different type of pizza and ended up at Conan's.  And for the first time in Austin I wasn't disappointed after eating my meal.  Is this place great?  No.  But it is good pizza. I had a deep dish pizza, but if I recall correctly they have other types of pies.

While the slices were good there are downsides.  First the crust was burnt and not remotely tasty.  Which is important as the crust is the last thing I eat with each of my slices.  Second I don't believe they serve individual slices (but I may be wrong).

Overall this is a good place to get a pizza is Austin.  If you decide to eat at Conan's the atmosphere is laid back and can be good for adults and kids alike.  They have some old school arcade games for the kids and beer for the adults.  Add in a good tasting pizza and you have a night at Conan's.

Got 2 pizzas...one deep pan, whole wheat "The Savage" and the same style and dough "Don't Choke Art".  The Savage was the best...loaded with everything you can imagine...got the jalepenos on the side since you never know how hot they might be.   This was a very good pizza.  Disappointed in the other as it was soggy....I know artichokes and spinach can have a lot of water to them, but seems as though they ganged up on the dough and left it mooshy in the middle.   Next time I may go with a pesto instead...the great tomato sauce seemed to overpower the spinach and artichokes.  I actually didn't even think about tomato sauce and these two veggies in that I haven't ever eaten this combo before, but that's the way it came so I guessed it was a good pairing...not for me, though.

Real test: breakfast.  Artichoke is better cold.  The Savage was as good cold as it was last night for dinner.

I kept a star because I called it in and was told "40 minutes".  When I got there in 25 thinking "I'll pay and wait" but there were my pizzas waiting for me....it's not bad that it was faster, I just wish they were more accurate on the time so I could have gotten them and gotten busy eating them!

    Enjoy....

I think the employees at this Conan's must be even more stoned that the typical pizza place. That is the only way I can explain how "large with Italian sausage" could become "large pepperoni with artichoke hearts". Pepperoni and Artichoke hearts?!?!? Really?!?!?

Much of what the other reviewers have said is true...the restaurant is right out of the 70s, usually pretty dirty, and service problems are not uncommon. If the stuffed crust "Savage" were not such a wonderful pizza this would be a 2-star review.

I had a coupon for a $13.99 pizza.  I called to get a delivery, mentioned the coupon, and was told that the $13.99 deal was only good for pickup.  (The coupon said nothing about this.)

So I placed an order for pick-up, arrived, and was charged $15.49.  I showed the counter girl the coupon and she said the prices had gone up.  I brought up the phone conversation, and showed her that the coupon had not expired.  She got her supervisor, who told me effectively the same thing.  They both appeared surprised when I didn't agree that this was okay.  They then got the manager, who asked what the problem was.  I showed him the coupon and said, "I want this."  He told the cashier to honor the coupon.  However, I was still charged $14.49, because of the $.50 "box charge".  I paid this accidentally; didn't realize it until I was out the door.

Too bad--the place used to be good years ago.

Believe it or not i actually moved to austin during my teen years. So guess what? I also went to a high school located not even a quarter of a mile from Conans. It was the "unofficial hot spot" during lunch break. All you can eat pizza and a drink for under 6 bucks. (it didnt hurt that i had a friend who had dinero to help us poor kids either...)
I am now 29 and its been over ten years since i last a had a slice. well actually i just did a few weeks ago. My brother who moved to Texas a few years ago was visiting me. Pizza was on his mind and we ended up here. it looks the same since the last time i had lunch here. They still had the classic wheat crust bread which we ordered. The girls working there were nice too. Good looking and friendly.

The pizza is great. different varieties of crust. I recommend the regular wheat crust. the sauce has a more homemade taste to it. not like the commercialized delivery types. they also do deliver so thats a plus when you are at home watching a game or something. When it comes to Austin Texas Pizza joints this is on my top three.

    Enjoy.

For some reason, I was under the impression that Conan's Pizza would taste terrible.  Boy, was I wrong!

Their deep dish fulfilled my deepest pizza fantasies.  The crust is so thick and decadent. The second time I ordered their deep dish I ordered cheese - only because it's a lot cheaper.  But I loved it even more.  The delicious simplicity of cheese, sauce, and crust was super satisfying.

The only reason I deduct one star is for the prices.  It's definitely more than I want to pay.

Apart from their spankin' new flat screen mounted above their counter, Conan's looks spit right out of someone's unwed uncle's game room circa 1984. Except without the stag head and mini bar. Electra and the gents of Mount Rushmore greeted us at our booth - oh hai.

The pizza Spinach & pepperoni deep dish was succulent. SUCCULENT! A worthy contender in the best of pizza races, says I.

Ok, this is a 2 star visit because it was absolutely filthy inside.

I was excited not to have to cook for the troops.  My husband suggested that we get pizza...who am I to decline that sort of offer?  So, we roll up to Conan's with 2 kids in tow.

We could not find a clean table.  Each table looked like a fraternity party had just occurred with it.  There were only a few other patrons in the joint, so unless there was a mass exodus right before arrived, there is a good chance that all these pizza trays, cups, dirty napkins, beer bottles, etc all over the tables has been there a while.  Greasy prints and crumbs all over the seats as well as tables.  Hmmmm, hungry yet?

Honestly I don't know why we did not leave...but, then y'all would have no idea what it was like inside...

The food was good.  Good not great.  I am beginning to think that the only time I am going to have yummy pizza again is when I head back east again for the summer.  We ordered a small cheese thin crust for the kids and my husband and I had a deep dish, artichoke, basil and tomato.  It was piping hot, which is a plus.  There is nothing worse than a moderate temperature pizza.

I am honestly not sure if I would go back here or not.  It was that unappealing because of the mess in the dining area.  I am thinking that the only reason this branch of Conan's is still open is the lunchtime crowd from Crockett H.S. across the street.

I'm a huge fan of the Conan's on Anderson Lane. I recently moved and was excited to see one in my new neighborhood. It couldn't have been more night and day.

The drinks had no CO2 and when alerted the staff barely recognized the problem let alone tried to fix. They ran out of multiple ingredients that we requested without telling us before delivery of the food. The didn't give us plates. We had to go back to the counter to make requests for things that should have been provided 4 separate times and each time the staff was just hanging out in back talking to each other ignoring the counter.

I will never go back to this Conan's but I'll go back the one on Anderson Lane

The service was absolutely terrible and this was after very visibly tipping generously at the time of order.

    Weak!

I'm surprised this place is rated as high as it is.

I'm all about atmosphere as much as the food, but it's a two way street.
If it's great food, but just a decent environment, I can deal. Great place, but forgettable food? Not so much.

This place is the latter, but I'm being really generous when I say that. It's just...alright all around.  The pizza was pretty bland and overpriced for the size.  I guess it'd be a cool hang out for a younger crowd, but I left feeling a little depressed. Old can be cool and add character but I guess it just wasn't working for me with Conan's.
