after years of raising the kids as vegans, one day, they asked me why a pizza guy had never come to the house.

damn it.  i let twelve years pass with making my offspring eat crappy mom's vegan pizza.

not too long ago, i called up Conan's, and the regular night dinner turned into a new and exciting thing.  Pizza delivered by a real guy, in a real brown box.  it might not seem like much to you, but imagine a life without ever having a hot pizza delivered to your door in a car. by a guy. and you can eat that pizza, because its vegan.

Conans does it, and does it well.

This is definitely a college town throwback. I appreciate the fact that it is local and has been around since the 70s.

My boyfriend loves Conan's because they have vegan deep-dish pizza. Not so much a fan of ddp myself, so I get thin crust when I come here. Their pizza is pretty good, the ambiance is fun because they have booths with table tops covered in Conan the Barbarian comics. We like to pick our favorite busty chicks while we wait for the pizza to be ready.

The people who work there are Reeally nice and courteous.

    but..

the "Chicago Style Deep Dish" I ordered wasn't very good.  The crust and Bread taste like it was previously Frozen and not very fresh when we got it. I ordered a "Don't Choke Art" Pizza, and there was just a lack of all around flavor. The Bread was really bland with no taste. I'm convinced that Real Deep Dish pizza doesn't exist in Austin and the Best New York Style pizza place was Shut down a few months back.  R.I.P. Hot Slices...

Went for dinner with two non-vegan friends, myself and my husband. We all shared 2 medium vegan pizzas, LOVED them- and had some left over. Excellent deep dish-  tons of veggie toppings, decent beer prices, and nice people. The leftovers made for a weird but yummy breakfast on the ride back to New Orleans the next morning! Would absolutely return the next time we are in Austin.

One of my favorite pizza places in Austin. The place is very laidback and rarely every crowded. The hours are long so I think their crowd comes and goes. My favorite is The Savage on thin crust. The toppings are just filled to the brim -- just the way I like it. The only downside is that pizzas can take some time to make (15 to 20 minutes, I'm guessing), so think about calling in your order ahead of time if your hungry.

Delicious, Chicago style deep dish pizza with hippie leanings.  I suggest ordering the Veggie, the Savage, or another specialty pizza on whole wheat.

I like taking people from out of town here because it's a slice of 70s Austin, complete with Antone's posters and old-school comics glazed onto the wooden tables.  And they have beer on tap!

Only downside - you can't get a slice to go after lunchtime.

Conans Pizza has been making the best pizza in Austin forever, well not forever but Conans is old school Austin.

They had The Fabulous T-Birds albums for sale back in the day and Conan supported live music in Austin back when 6th street was just a place to grab a hooker. Well, some things never change!

The veggie on wheat crust is my favorite pizza and this isn't a fold in half paper thin frisbee or east coast cardboard, It's thick, stuffed pizza like God Intended.

A lot of hype, but really only good due to location.  The pizza is edible, but I don't think I'm going to be going out of the way to get it again.  I might consider stopping by if I'm in the neighborhood, but it's a slim chance.  Maybe if it's the only thing open.

The flavor and texture of the pizza is not inspiring.

I'm a child of the '80s. (As in, I was actually a child able to comprehend events and participate in goings-on...not a bebe)

In this rough-and-tumble world, we sometimes can forget those simpler times when video games only really existed in giant standing wooden box form and those striped white athletic knee socks weren't meant to be ironic. When Goonies made every kid want to move to Astoria, Oregon and find a pirate ship and possibly a mongoloid son of a mobster who you could get on your side with a candy bar.

Bowling alleys and video arcades ruled the streets, and Cindy Lauper was enjoying the death throws of her career. It was a good time to be a kid. (and free of all, you know, awareness of political goings-ons) And what did kids enjoy doing? Eatin' some motha grubbin pizza. Because aside from watching old 80's movies you would reminisce 20 years later about while drunk with friends, eating and sleeping were right up there with riding your bike endlessly around the neighborhood hoping to find ET.

Growing up in my small hick town, we had a pizza parlor whose name escapes me. They had Joust and Pac-man and Donky Kong and odd wood work and uncomfortable wooden benches. The guy behind the counter looked like Matthew Mcconaughey from Dazed and Confused and wore a red striped sweat band while he made the pizza. This, to me, was a big part of my childhood. We came here for countless birthdays and celebrations and other pointless events. The pizza was manna and all was right with the world.

Fast forward to now. Most pizza places are owned by massive corporations who mass produce chemically enhanced food matter into "pizza". I don't know about you, but going and sitting in Pizza Hut isn't all that appealing. And so my nostalgic memory of what a pizza parlor was had all but evaporated.

Enter Conans pizza, from the fog of memory and time. They appear every 1000 years like Brigadoon and remind you of your childhood in a way that made me sit in a bizarre reverence of the completely bizarre environment. Sure, the kids behind the counter have changed...grown up, moved on...but the feeling hanging over the place makes you feel like you've stepped into a time warp.

And the pizza? The pizza is good. Fresh tasting and filling. I don't remember the last time I ate pizza and didn't feel like I needed my stomach pumped afterwards. It may not be Pizza Gold, but they restored my faith that pizza has a chance in this crazy world.

I'll likely go back...if only to have a slice and stare at the walls and pretend I'm eight again and everything seems easier.

Some of the best pie in town. A dinosaur of a place in a good way. Ancient booths I carved my name in as a teen. Boris Vallejo art on the walls. It's the movie "Heavy Metal" forged in food.

I usually hate whole wheat crust. Bitch, please. It's deep dish pizza. What good is a wheat crust gonna do? Here, I actually prefer it. Pepperoni deep dish on whole wheat. Toasty, lotsa good sauce, lotsa cheese. Flava fo sho!

Also love the side salads. They have honed the perfect combination: lettuce, black olives, green bell pepper, onion, shredded mozzarella, and home made ranch.

Go! Locations are dwindling and these guys rule!

Why isn't anyone talking about the Conan the Barbarian connection? Who cares about the Chicago-style authenticity of the pizza? What about Barbarian style? Late 70s motif, pictures of women in bikinis riding dinosaurs? Isn't that a better use of your  time than debating what it is, exactly, that makes the pizza "off" for you?

Whatever. Yeah, there's better pizza in Austin than Conan's and better pizza in the world than in Austin. But I will continue to love Conan's unconditionally. If Robert E. Howard were alive today, I'd like to imagine he'd be on his laptop, munching down a slice of whole-wheat and pepperoni, refilling his diet coke for free, and churning out another masterpiece of barbarian literature.

And the north location (Burnet Rd.) is where it's at.  At least ever since the car crash.

This pizza is the best! I can only vouch for the barbecue chicken, meaters, and the savage. I HIGHLY suggest you get the deep dish, wheat crust savage! Anything else can be dissapointing! I went with friends who had never been there before and they ordered thin white crust. When we gave them a slice of our savage with whole wheat, thick crust, they were dumbfounded and then lusted over our pizza the rest of the dinner!

A lot of people are griping about it not being "Chicago" style or whatever. I lived in Chicago and think it is the best pizza I have ever had in my life! I have brought numerous friends who visited FROM Chicago who have been there their entire life and were highly impressed with Conan's pizza. I am not saying it's Chicago-style. I wouldn't insult the pizza.

A city that prides itself on hot dogs and pizza can't really be trusted anyway, right? The place is very authentically Austin-ish. And it's basically a hole in the wall, but a damn good one! (Aren't those the best types anyway?) If you want thin crust, by all means go to Home Slice, as it is the best thin crust. If you want thick crust, you GOTTA try Conan's! Make SURE to get the deep crust, wheat savage!

And if you want a $45 cold pizza that is "authentically" Chicago-style, try Mangia, by all means! There is surely a Mangia location very near you, regardless of what part of Austin, Round Rock, Plugerville, etc you live in!! Seriously, you gotta eat at Conan's! It's like they put crack in the pizza sauce. You will have cravings for it that you cannot control.

    Why am I giving Conan's a 4 and not a 5?  Because there is another place I like just a tad better -- Mangia's.

However, let me just regale you with why I love Conan's.  The pizza is of course amazing.  Everywhere I go I get deep dish meat pizzas, and I have no idea what each restaurant calls theirs, but Conan's is among the best.  Yes, as good as Mangia's in my opinion, and sometimes, if the winds of taste are blowing just so, even better.  I love the ambiance.  When I used to "game" some of us would go eat at Conan's afterward.  It's the perfect place for a bunch of gamer geeks to hang out and reminisce about comic books and all the goofy rpg's and video games we've done.

The fifth star will appear in this rating if or when they get more beer selection.  Especially if they can manage some locals.  The tiny location on 29th has an excuse for not having it, but the location up around Anderson should know better.  =)  Still, there's Shiner and Fat Tire, so I won't totally bust them on beer.  It's just that beer is a very important part of the pizza dining experience...

    Solid four stars.

    3 words: Don't Choke Art.

Artichoke hearts, spinach, garlic and thinly sliced tomatoes. I normally go for a more carnivorous pizza, but this combination is nearly perfect. Nearly.

I like garlic (I might go on to say that I love garlic), but there was way too much garlic on my small deep dish on wheat. My skin stank of garlic after munchin' this delicious pie. Days went by, but plenty of showering and scrubbing had little to no effect. Showering might have made it worse, actually. As a consequence, I reeked of garlic and Old Spice soap. It took about a week to fully recover.

Conan's is the BEST pizza I've had in Austin so far! It's fresh, always ready when they say, and tastes amazing. While their deep dish pizza is their specialty, their thin crust is great too...just depends on what mood your in.  The pizza is really filling and a great price for what your getting.  My absolute favorite is the Veggie deep dish, with the Don't Choke Art in a close second! If your craving traditional tasting deep dish or thin crust pizza GO TO CONAN'S! You won't regret it!

Conan's has some pretty good pizza. I was taken by my parents who have a deep connection with it (not sure if it was this location) in that they met at Conan's. We ordered the meat lovers on the wheat crust (kind of ironic isn't it) and I have to say it was probably some of the best pizza I have had. It was just the right blend of toppings and cheese and sauce.

The actual restaurant is a bit on the small side and only has maybe 6 tables. You can definitely tell that their main customer is delivery. The atmosphere of the place is very 70's/80's, Lots of fantasy pictures of vikings, warriors, barbarians, etc. and of course you gotta love the wood paneling. Take a look at a few of the pictures on the website. Its like walking back in time.

Overall Conan's has some great pizza and while the dine in experience hurts its rating, I would definitely order delivery from them in the future.

    Yay! I'm a fan.

First off, the atmosphere of the place is great. The walls are adorned with entertaining illustrations of Conan's bulging muscles in various action scenes. Perfect complement to a great pizza.

I ordered a thin crust Meaters pizza which includes sausage, hamburger, Canadian bacon and pepperoni. They do not skimp on toppings - I could barely see any cheese under all those layers of meaty goodness. Nom nom nom.

I also got some cheese bread which seemed small for the price but it was definitely more than enough to split amongst 3 people. Definitely worth it.

Oh boy, my first taste of Chicago pizza in Austin that's not owned by a dinosaur with sunglasses!  Man, was I pumped.  I waited all day so I could eat a whole medium pizza all by myself.  I called in the glorious order for a half Savage and half veggie with onions, spinach, mushrooms, and green peppers... Then I just waited.

I went in and decided to eat my to-go order there, just so I could eat it fresh off the pan.  My pizza popped out of the oven, and it was glorious looking.  Golden crisp cheese, an abundance of toppings, and tomato juice seeping out from under.

I sank my fork and knife into it, and tomato sauce just spilled out.  What a rush.  Normally I hate pizza with too many toppings, but all the salty goodness (anchovies, sausage, pepperoni, jalapenos, etc. ) were perfect with the tangy/sweet sauce.  I am a huge sucker for sauce, and it was good stuff.  The crust got a little soggy near the end because it was sitting in the tomato sauce, but other than that, the crust was perfectly buttery and crisp.

Best way to eat it?  Eat it, then dip your crust in all the goodies that fall off your pizza.  This is the best deep dish I've had in Austin...haven't had much though, so don't hold me to it.

My boyfriend just has to eat here every time we go to Austin. He is obsessed with the fantasy art on the walls. The decor is probably the greatest thing about this place. There is plenty of ripling Conan muscles and lots of abnormaly large breasts barely hidden by tiny bikini tops on the walls. As for the pizza, that is pretty good too. The marinara sauce is really tastey and there is plenty o cheese on top of that. They serve the pizza in a deep pie pan. I would pass on anything else on the menu besides the pizza. My salad was pretty disapointing.

The reason they loose stars is because of the service and the limited seating. The typical Austin dude (you know...big beard, black framed glasses, trendy jeans) who took our order seemed like he really hated his job. And his day didnt get any better when we walked in. The staff delivered everyone's pizza pie except for ours. So when our name was called my friend got up to deliver our order and she just happened to non-accidentaly take someone else's salad. About 10 min later beardy comes over and asks if we ordered 2 salads. She says no, and he walks away even more annoyed by us.

Oh well, at least we got a free salad :)

Remember when those stupid aggys thought that they had invented "cold fusion."  And they were all experts and had stuff to say and everyone listened...

But then we all found out they didn't know what they were talking about.

Anyone who rates Conans below 3 stars needs to be ignored.  Try the deep dish whole wheat.

And yeah, if you compare it to Chicago pizza from Chicago, it's not gonna compare.  Ever heard of Tex-mex?  It's not the same as mex-mex... but it's still damn good.

So get out there and getcha some Chi-Tex pizza.  You'll be glad you did.

PS  After addiciton forms and the "whites" of your eyes become a cheesy yellow, I recommend yelping my personal trainer Sarah Stewart.

Hey it aint bad. Got a regular cheese pie with fajita chicken -- twas honestly a bit too chickeny for me..give me pork anyday! Also got a three-topper with spinach, mushrooms and hamburger. In all truf, I would have been happy with just the spinach probably. This is a slightly thicker za than I'm used to, so it ends up tasting kinda like spinach dip.

Friends and I usually get the savage without anchovies, and if we're feeling adventurous, with anchovies.

The whole wheat (also comes in white flour) thick pizza will satisfy even the most hardcore munchers. Even if the pie had no toppings I'd still dig the crust as it's just so tasty! It's soft on the inside, and crispy on the outside.

I like that it tends to not be too crowded, but it is made to order (if you go for dinner and don't order slices) so expect to wait a short while, but its worth it. Their lunches, usually a slice, salad, and drink are great if you've got limited time and want something filling.

Their atmosphere is great, just makes me want to listen to 80's music and play some Nintendo.

Great place, which is just thick pizza, Conan-style.

I would never suggest Conan's to be similar to NY-style or Chicago-style, or any great "style" of pizza (although they claim to produce Chicago-style pizza....). But, hell, when you've got slim pickins, go with the best.

Conan's is old school. They've been delivering decent pies in Austin for over 30 years. This location on the corner of 29th and Guadalupe is easy to find and relatively accessible from anywhere in Central or North Austin (sorry Southies...). There's something different about their pizza....I can't get a taste bud on it, but it's something unusual. I think it's the crust bottom or the sauce....or the combination of the two. Either way, Conan's is worth checking out. Try the green pepper and mushroom.

This location (one of three) features a tiny dining room, which would be inconvenient for groups or families, but is perfect for one or two. They have two front booths with only one side, so you can sit and look out the window on to the always-crazy Guadalupe. Average prices, but check out their website for dinner and lunch specials. Delivery and take-out available.

    Conan's is cool.

This place is worth checking out to satisfy any deep dish pizza cravings, but that is about all Conan's has going for it. Yes, the offer wheat deep dish crust, but there are two sides to the coin. Although wheat crust eschews the stigma and simple carbs of a white crust, you miss out on the buttery, flakey goodness that is characteristic of a true Chicago deep dish.

Everything else here is pretty decent. They don't skip out on their pizza sauce and the toppings are alright. My boyfriend and I ordered pepperoni, sausage and mushrooms. While the two other ingredients were okay, the sausage that came on our pizza was akin to chopped up breakfast sausage.

We had ordered the pizza for take out, so I didn't get the chance to soak up the "comic-book-quirky" ambiance that every one talks about. Honestly, who cares? You can't eat dry wall.

Conan's is good Pizza - if you're not too picky about your pizza.

I'm from Chicago and Conan's has no concept of what Chicago Style pizza really tastes like.  Conan's looks like a reasonable deep dish pizza and they have a pretty tasty crust. The problem is they kill everything by drowning the pie in sauce. This kills it for me.

Try Mangia for something closer to real Chicago Style. Or better yet - Drive to Houston and go to Star Pizza

The pies here are pretty good, but my favorite part is drinking some Shiner and reading all the little Conan the Barbarian or Tarzan snippets on the tables while waiting for the people working the shift call out my name to tell me that my pizza's ready. Some of the excerpts can sometimes encroach on romance novel territory, which makes me wonder if kids are trying to figure out what's going on.

I don't come here too often, but when I do, it's the deep dish Don't Choke Art on whole wheat crust for me. And yes, it's Austin-style pizza, not Chicago or New York. It's priced rather reasonably for its location and the quality of the food.

The verdict: If you live in Austin, haven't tried out this place, and want to graduate on to Austinite status, put this on your checklist. If you're just passing through, go to Home Slice instead.

Some of you Yelpers out there may be following my quest to find some decent pizza in Austin, Texas.  My journey brought me to Conan's, a place several locals claimed to have found "great" pizza.

That just affirmed to me how pizza deprived the community has become.  It's to the point that people think ridiculously bad pizza is good, because they only have Chuck E Cheese to compare it to.

Ditto what Khalil H. said.  Only leave Pizza Hut out of this.  I think I might give them two stars instead of just one.

Remember when that car crashed into the dining room?  Boy, was that a big night in Austin.  Almost as big as when UT covers up another on-campus student suicide or alcohol overdose.

Wait, we were talking about pizza, right?  Yeah, it's good.  I know it's not real Chicago pizza, but it works.  At least it's something within walking distance of campus, because, really, the pickings are slim in general.  No one goes to Pho.  Don't make the mistake of eating at Cain & Able's.

And NY pizza is limp dog barf anyway, like that crap on 6th street.

    Worst.  Review.  Ever, huh?

Austin is full of terrible pizza places. This is not one of them.

The restaurant itself is rather drab. Full of comic books and an infatuation with wench-esk ladies. I see plenty of wenches on campus so this isn't anything new.

People inside are rather nice. They fit the restaurant.

Pizza is fawkin delecish! It falls short of being true deep-dish to me, but I could care less if it fits a bloody category. They layer it in thick.

Its stupidly expensive, but I guess most stuff in Austin is. Its worth springing for every once and awhile as it is leaps and bounds better than anything in the area. I usually take out of towners to Conans so they don't have to suffer through pizzaslut or something similar.

If you haven't been you should pry go.

Conans Pizza serves the best deep dish pizza in the most Austin-of-all type atmospheres.

The lunch special is a great deal at $3 for a slice of deep-dish, whole wheat crust, and tasty goodness.  You can also opt for a slice and drink or the slice, salad, and drink for a little under $6.  Personally, two big slices for $6 is enough to fill you up and get you going again for the rest of the day. Not to mention...the whole wheat crust is amazingly delicious and essential!!

My uncle and I were greeted with a warm and friendly 'hello' along with good small talk conversation.  The server behind the counter made us feel like regulars.  We grabbed our meals, grabbed a booth, and sat down in the cozy pizza parlor (one of the last 'real' parlors) to enjoy our quick but relaxing lunch.

Will go back for sure when I want the good deep dished pizza served in an Austin place with an Austin touch.

I love Conan's.  Sure it may not be "authentic Chicago pizza", but who cares?  It is awesome, and that is all that matters!  Not to mention, it is an Austin institution. I have been going for years and have never met anyone that didn't like it.

Most of the negative reviews on here say to go to Mangia instead.  Well, they can have it.  I will order my savage /w jalapenos and go home happy!

I love the Conan's on Anderson Lane but I've moved and the 29th Street location is now closer.  I will drive to the Anderson Lane location because the 29th Street location has THE WORST SERVICE EVER!  I asked for garlic butter instead of marinara on a pizza--something I order all the time at the Anderson Lane location--and they absolutely, rudely refused to make it that way.  I would have paid extra--seriously, how hard is it?  I first had a pizza like this AT this location in the early 90's!  I will never go there again.

Conans had gone by the way side in my normal rotation of campus regular lunch spots and stopped in today for no other reason than I was at Breed and Co. and needed some lunch. I had the Don't Choke Art. It was delicious! I am so glad I had the serendipitous run in with this old flame. The salad is fresh and the pizza is yummy. Conans has been a fixture in Austin on a street corner that is historically hard to hold your ground on. The manager of this particular location has been there 20 years. They know there stuff and can always be counted on for a dependable  slice and salad. This is a great place to stop by and have lunch or order out for dinner. As a side note you can not get just a slice on the weekends you have to get a whole pie.
