This place is great for groups and kids. The location off of Stassney is good too. The buffet is so awesome. Check it out. The pizza is very tasty, and believe me. You will not want to go back to Mr. Gatti's or Papa John's after eating here. You will enjoy the laid back environment and stellar pizza.

Apart from their spankin' new flat screen mounted above their counter, Conan's looks spit right out of someone's unwed uncle's game room circa 1984. Except without the stag head and mini bar. Electra and the gents of Mount Rushmore greeted us at our booth - oh hai.

The pizza Spinach & pepperoni deep dish was succulent. SUCCULENT! A worthy contender in the best of pizza races, says I.

July 3rd Update

I finally calmed down from the June 8th debacle.  Really I was in desperate need of a pie and figured to try them one more time.  I'm glad I did.  It was good once again.  So, I'll put them at 3 stars.  Hopefully I never have a repeat of my June 8th experience.

Update:  June 8th

I do not know what the hell went wrong tonight aside from everything.  The guy over the phone was rude.
It took longer than he said for the pizza to get here.
The pizza is HORRIBLE.  I've never had so much garlic in one bite ever.  I'm throwing the whole thing out.
The only plus is their driver.  He is a sweetheart and has been all the other times I've ordered.  Based on tonight, I'm never ordering from them again.

I'll leave my original review here, but I'm dropping it from 4 stars to 2.  If I would have never ordered from them before, it would have been a 1 for tonight.

*******************
My original, good review

Wow.

1st of all, love the whole wheat crust option (we didn't have that in Orlando).

2nd, FAST.  they told me 45 min to an hour.  nope half hour.

3rd and THEE most important... YUMMY!!!!!

Conan's Stassney location - HORRIBLE SERVICE; DIRTY CONDITIONS

At 6:40 pm, my toddler and I walked in to the South Conan's.  I used to work for Conan's many moons ago, and I was eager to introduce my daughter to her first deep dish.  The place was filthy...floors, tables, bathroom, etc.  I ignored this as I had our special treat in mind. We waited at the counter for a long while, until a young man finally acknowledged us.  I asked for a menu, but he had no idea where they were located.  My 2yr old found them in a dirty hanging folder container.  They looked handled.  We ordered, and the young man said it would be 15 minutes.  Well, we waited for 40 minutes until I finally went up to the counter to ask about our pie.  The scantily-clad young lady (shorts up to her bottom and a halter top) at the counter informed us that the young man had put the ticket aside in a basket.  That's where the conversation stopped as she looked at me indifferently.    II asked for a refund after being told that it would be another 30 minutes before a pizza could be ready.   I then asked for the manager, and she said he was busy.  The manager finally appeared, and had the same air of unconcern.  He curtly told me something like "You've got your refund...what more do you want?"  After this, I decided to leave.  As I was gathering up my two year old, this manager brings out a fresh deep dish for the "buffet", without even a look our way.   When I asked for the owner or higher-ups contact information, he said he would get it.  Then, he had the nerve to say with a sarcastic tone "You want me to write it down?" because he was going to orally tell me ! (Remember: young hungry child in tow who didn't understand why we weren't having the promised pizza)

Oh man, is this ever good pizza.  We get the deep dish wheat crust w/pepperoni or sausage, and extra cheese.  To die for but man, it'll fill your gut like nuthin' else!

Takin' a breather on this stuff while I'm focusing on Weight Watchers but will occasionally splurge when I get the opportunity.

They also leave a $2 coupon and they never take it with them when they deliver.  That whole perpetual coupon thing, dontcha know.

I had a coupon for a $13.99 pizza.  I called to get a delivery, mentioned the coupon, and was told that the $13.99 deal was only good for pickup.  (The coupon said nothing about this.)

So I placed an order for pick-up, arrived, and was charged $15.49.  I showed the counter girl the coupon and she said the prices had gone up.  I brought up the phone conversation, and showed her that the coupon had not expired.  She got her supervisor, who told me effectively the same thing.  They both appeared surprised when I didn't agree that this was okay.  They then got the manager, who asked what the problem was.  I showed him the coupon and said, "I want this."  He told the cashier to honor the coupon.  However, I was still charged $14.49, because of the $.50 "box charge".  I paid this accidentally; didn't realize it until I was out the door.

Too bad--the place used to be good years ago.

I love this restaurant and the pizza. The restaurant looks like it's frozen in time. The year is 1982. Seriously, they have old video games, brown wood decor and old photos. Awesome. What my kitchen would look like if I had a bachelor paradise. The pizza is great! I love the deep dish pizza and this place has in my opinion, the best in town. I've had a few different kinds here and they are all good. Do yourself a favor and go here to eat. Don't get it delivered or pickup because you'll miss half the goodness this place has to offer.

Frank Frazetta and Boris Vellejo paintings on the wood paneled walls...  How is it that I'm the 3rd person to review this location of the best pizza in Austin?

Conan's was a staple when I was growing up in Austin -- now when I visit, all the invader Californians are crowding the New York style pizza joints on south Congress... And Conan's was empty.  WTF?

Order the deep dish on whole wheat

I have been on a personal quest since moving from New York City to find a good slice of pizza in Austin.  I tried several "New York" style pizza joints, but none of them lived up to expectation.  I realized trying to find good "New York" style pizza in the middle of Texas is like trying to find a Redskin's fan in the middle of Dallas.  Maybe there is one out there, but it would be REALLY hard to find.

So because of this I decided to try a different type of pizza and ended up at Conan's.  And for the first time in Austin I wasn't disappointed after eating my meal.  Is this place great?  No.  But it is good pizza. I had a deep dish pizza, but if I recall correctly they have other types of pies.

While the slices were good there are downsides.  First the crust was burnt and not remotely tasty.  Which is important as the crust is the last thing I eat with each of my slices.  Second I don't believe they serve individual slices (but I may be wrong).

Overall this is a good place to get a pizza is Austin.  If you decide to eat at Conan's the atmosphere is laid back and can be good for adults and kids alike.  They have some old school arcade games for the kids and beer for the adults.  Add in a good tasting pizza and you have a night at Conan's.

Ok, this is a 2 star visit because it was absolutely filthy inside.

I was excited not to have to cook for the troops.  My husband suggested that we get pizza...who am I to decline that sort of offer?  So, we roll up to Conan's with 2 kids in tow.

We could not find a clean table.  Each table looked like a fraternity party had just occurred with it.  There were only a few other patrons in the joint, so unless there was a mass exodus right before arrived, there is a good chance that all these pizza trays, cups, dirty napkins, beer bottles, etc all over the tables has been there a while.  Greasy prints and crumbs all over the seats as well as tables.  Hmmmm, hungry yet?

Honestly I don't know why we did not leave...but, then y'all would have no idea what it was like inside...

The food was good.  Good not great.  I am beginning to think that the only time I am going to have yummy pizza again is when I head back east again for the summer.  We ordered a small cheese thin crust for the kids and my husband and I had a deep dish, artichoke, basil and tomato.  It was piping hot, which is a plus.  There is nothing worse than a moderate temperature pizza.

I am honestly not sure if I would go back here or not.  It was that unappealing because of the mess in the dining area.  I am thinking that the only reason this branch of Conan's is still open is the lunchtime crowd from Crockett H.S. across the street.

I LOVE this pizza!  I know there's the whole east coast vs west coast thing going on with pizza, but if you can get past automatically comparing this pizza to your preferred coast you might actually enjoy it for the yumminess that it is.
I rec. the whole wheat deep dish, it's delicious.
If you go later in the evening, close to closing time it becomes a chill place to hang with your friends, or on a date.
Avoid lunch time & late afternoon, as the place is swarming with high school students.  Lunch time is a good time to go for the lunch specials, but like I said it's swarming with students.
Darn it, now I want pizza.
