Central (Red)
I agree, it is intimate, cosy, mediterranean, nice, non-fancy place with great, tasty authentic food and delicious wine. Also the prices are reasonable. So for two people we shared 4 tapas as appetizers and then we shared a Paella as an entree and it was perfect in regards to the amount of food we had. We had a bottle of great red wine and it was i think a total of 60 US for 2. When i compare this to places like Avila (they claim to be mediterranean) than i have to say "sorry guys, you didnt get the point. your food is good but you focus more on being fancy than mediterranean". To me, mediterranean life and food is simple, initmate and delicious - and so is this place.
Con Sol is an intimate place that feels like going to some relative's house where they stuff you full of good food. Every time I've been here, the service has been almost gushingly friendly, and the food is in such great portions (for amazingly good prices) that if my grandmother was Portuguese, I might expect to find her hiding in the kitchen. I'm boring and stuck on the paella, but there's a good variety of seafood and meat dishes available, and even a vegetarian paella (!). The decor is rustic, with lots of brick and cozy lighting, and the attention paid to the customer sometimes feels like you've stumbled into some much more expensive restaurant. A great place for a special evening out, or just a relaxing time with friends.

This is one of those gems that you hope has enough success to stick around for a while. The food is good (paella in particular and cod in particular) and cheap by Boston standards. The waiters are attentive, but that's primarily because you'll likely be the only people eating there at the time. Being a bit off the beaten track certainly hurts here as this cozy restaurant is almost always empty. It's just a few blocks from Kendall Square and a few blocks off of Prospect St., but that's apparently enough for people not to notice it. Eat here soon; who knows how long it can survive.
Best cheap Portuguese food you'll have. Wine list includes plenty of tasty Dao (Portuguese wine) reasonably priced. A great place for a date. Very low prices.
The bad review from May 07 seems to be from shortly after they opened. They now have a full bar and courteous staff. You can end the meal with a nice espresso too.

understaffed, underseasoned
I was psyched to try this new Portuguese restaurant, but found it disappointing. I went with a large group (~15) people, and we may have overwhelmed them. Service was friendly but spotty. We had to ask for water several times before receiving it, and it took me about 45 minutes to score a drink refill. We ordered several appetizers to split, but didn't get plates for them. Olives were served without a dish to dispose of the pits.
I highly recommend the salted fishcake appetizer, but not the paella. The paella entree was surprisingly bland, except for some tasty linguica. The chicken in it was dry and tasteless.
One big bonus: They're more veggie-friendly than most Portuguese joints; they have a tomato soup with a poached egg and a vegetable paella entree.
Second big bonus: They're quite inexpensive. Appetizers are $3-5, entrees $8-13.
No liquor license yet, but they're working on it.
