WOW, what a great place, a gem. Amazing bread really, nice blistery crust with chewy inside. Great selection if you like bread. Two of the selection allows you to chose '3 types' of bread and you can have it savory or sweet, the difference is your condiments, awesome. Gruyere and Chives delish, Kalamata Olive muach.  Will try more stuff next time, great options. Staffs were really friendly, helpful, and patient. MMmmm sourdough can develop more flavor, not very sour but gets your saliva glands going tho.

I REALLY like this place.  Sandwiches are really easy to make.  Come on now... you don't even cook it.  However, this place uses QUALITY ingredients and don't have a huge selection.  That seems to be a winning combination here because this place may be one of the best places to get a sandwich.

I got the Turkey Cobb, which had Gorgonzola cheese and sun dried tomatoes.  Something that may be overlooked is how thin they slice their avocados.  It's the thinnest I have seen and it works so well as to not give you huge chunks of avocado.  That is something I will be using myself in home made sandwiches now.

OVERALL:

Come try this place at least once either for some of their good bread or their sandwiches.

My wife and I live right up the street from Con Pane--we could not have made a better decision!

I always get the Turkey Cob.  It's easily the most delicious sandwich that I've ever bought.  I generally sub the mayo for the olive-oil pesto and add onions.  The lettuce is always fresh, and I love the gorgonzola!  And the Point Loma Sourdough in which everything is sandwiched is always from the mornings fresh batch!  (FYI, my wife is vegetarian and she always gets the Veggie Cob with the same substitutions as me.  She swears by this sandwich.)

This is the place I brag about to my friends.  I always feel comfortable bringing out of town guests here, because I trust that they will be satisfied--as they regularly have been.  I haven't had the pleasure of trying a lot of other menu items, but I have had their fresh cinnamon roll (which was delicious, but not the best I've had).  I've also bought the gorgonzola-walnut loaf and I love it.  It's doesn't last more than a day when I bring it home!

NOTE:  This place is cash only which is a little behind the times, but oh well.  I would drive to a bank and back for their sandwich.

Dude. Con Pane, how did you combine two of my favorite things in this whole wide world?

Chocolate bread. You are an absolute genius.

I love this place, they have a really good selection of bread, my favorite being the Olive Oil and Rosemary. They also have special breads on certain days, the Chocolate bread being on Saturday. Yum!

Their sandwiches are amazing and when I used to live a block away I would wake up and crave their California Cobb on Olive Oil Rosemary when the hangover set in. Then I would wash that down with homemade cinamon rolls with cream cheese frosting. Yum Yum Yum.

Their loaves are fairly inexpensive about 4 bucks a pop but the catch is the wait can be ridiculous at times. The weekends are the most busy so hit it up on your lunch hour during the week. It is WELL worth it!

THIS PLACE IS NOT OPEN ON WEDNESDAYS!

when they are open, they have the best and freshest sandwiches in san diego-   btu beware... you can't really order it with different options... this is a bread place first and foremost, and a sandwhich place second... !  try the turkey cobb or the italian salami, or the roast beef.. and they even have PBJ and a veggie cobb as well---  my favortie breads are the sourdough, the rosemary, and the raisen breads.  prices range from $4.50 for half a sandwich to about $7 for a regular portion---

all breads are made fresh everyday early- if you like chocolate.. you must get the chocolate bread on saturdays only, and sundays if any is left over

they also have great cookies for $2, and cinnamon rolls and other desserts as well

great coffee drinks as well--   if you don't like coffee they have sodas, water, and juices from Nantucket brands

wonderful atmosphere!  small outdoor seating available.. but watch for falling umbrellas on a windy day!

The bomb-diggity!! So much better than Bread & Cie and in a much more scenic area: Point Loma. The breads are fantastic and the sandwiches are grand. Everytime someone visits me, we take a trip out here even though its a little out of the way from College Area. The turkey cobb is my all-time fave and i have yet to try the Ultimate Grilled Cheese or the PB&J.

Only thing is that its cash only and closed on wednesdays (totally random).

I actually used to work at Con Pane, for about a year. Let me tell you it gets INSANE sometimes. The place is ALWAYS understaffed, There $15,000 french oven is to small and can only bake so much bread in one day, the bakers start at 1am. So the reason why they close at 6pm everyday is that they run out of bread. And to make sandwiches like that it takes time, But to be honest, the best things of all are:
Chocolate Bread
Veggie Cobb
Multigrain Bread
Hazelnut Raisin Bread
Guyere and Chive Bread
Chocolate chip walnut cookies
New Zealand Berry Tea

Everything is made by hand, daily, there are NEVER leftovers, and when there are, the donate them to charity. Lines start out the door at 7am most days so get there early. Try this:

Veggie cobb, sub dijion and pesto olive oil instead of mayo,
sub fresh tomato instead of roasted, on multigrain bread, with pepperchinis. And ask them to toast the bread and cheese with the oil and mustard, It is OUT OF THIS WORLD!
And get a chocolate bread roll for dessert with honey roasted peanut butter....mmmm

Best bread I have ever had in the states.

This place is amazing. We stopped by to pick up bread here some time ago with friends and I seriously wish that I had an appetite. My eyes were bigger than my stomach and I wanted one off everything. I remember that we ordered one of the brioche chocolate twists. It was so good. We also ordered something else but I forgot. I wish that I lived closer. This bakery is amazing... They also have a menu of assorted sandwiches... prices are cheap...

I love Con Pane and I'm not even a Nazbo. My boyfriend, however, is and this is how I was first introduced to some of the most delicious sandwiches in all of the beach areas.

Three stars are for items such as the Red Onion, Goat Cheese and Walnut Foccacia (perfect midday munching material) and the most perfectly crafted turkey sandwiches I've ever had. The servers go out of their way to be kind to you, which I know can be difficult to do while working in food services.

Two missing stars are for rude management. I once ordered the Sweet Bread Baker's Plate, which I suggest you NEVER do, and was disappointed by the three overly large slices of bread, small container of generic cream cheese, FREEZING cold butter and average preserves. When I very politely presented my cold butter to a very large, management-looking woman behind the counter, asking if I could perhaps trouble her for a plastic cup of butter more on par with room temperature, she INSULTED me by snickering and asking, "What would you like me to do? Microwave it for you?" Yes, microwave it for me and eat it yourself. I know you will after the store closes anyway.

In my world, there's no place for unnecessary rudeness. I'll go back to CP, of course, but beware of the stink-eye, lady!

here is my problem with con pane. con is the right word. we ordered the choice of 3 breads with olive oil and goat cheese and persto. we got 2 bricks of bread(and i mean it literally and figuratively) and two slices of sour dough. The bread wasnt even warm apart from the fact that we needed to call our insurance company for a specialized dental plan. They refused to cover us when we told them we were eating bread at con pane as it was a deemed hazardous activity for teeth. The portions of pesto, goat cheese and olive oil were tiny....I mean miniscule so we got extras and yes pay for them. We ordered latte which was so weak that an infant could drink it and not be wired so we got an extra shot which we had to pay for. I will never ever visit the place again even if I had to eat my own tongue. I heard their chocolate bread is good though.
cheers

Dare I say it.....I like Con Pane better than Bread and Cie.  Why?  I love the crusty breads and the different flavors they make.  The service can be a little airy but it's well worth it.

Some good flavors they have are the Gruyere and chive, the kalamata olive. pesto and feta focaccia, and the ciabatta.  The panini there is fantastic and so are the chocolate brioche twists.  I'll admit the coffee is better at B & C but still palatable.

They never used to accept credit cards but I've heard they do now.  This is a nice mellow place to enjoy a lazy afternoon any day of the week.

Everything here is a carb lover's dream come true.  The bread here is amaaazing.  I especially love the Rosemary Olive Oil bread.  I'll eat any sandwich made with this bread.  Nice crust and soft and chewy center.  All of their sandwich ingredients are fresh too.  Sandwiches are made to order, so the wait can get pretty long.

I tried to eat here as often as I could when I used to work downtown.  But it is a bit of a drive and could end up being a long lunch because of the popularity of this place.  The line is usually out the door during the lunch rush and oftentimes, it is difficult to find a seat.  But every little crumb here is worth it.

Cone Pane= heaven on earth. I live so close and can never get enough of this place. First of all- they have THE BEST CHALLAH bread, which is a traditional jewish bread that is braided made with eggs and sugar, it is very fluffy, light, and sweet. It is only available Friday's, so be sure to snag it before it is gone!
I have had the veggie sandwich and it is to die for. Recommend getting half sandwiches so you can enjoy some of the yummy pastries they have.
They also have wonderful coffee-- my latte was so delicious and had the right amount of perfectly made foam (for all you foam junkies), and got it with sugar free vanilla syrup and nonfat milk (for all you health conscious nuts).
This place is the closest thing that compares to a traditional french Bakery, in terms of the quality of food and even the service. Don't expect to come in unless you have a little time to spare-- there will most likely be a small line, and even if there is none your food may take some more time than the run of the mill sandwich place. But your taste-buds will thank you for your patience.

I first heard of this place after having their sandwiches out sailing on the bay-- one of my vendors for work use this cafe for their catering and I knew I had to try it out first hand. YUM!

I agree- the rosemary olive oil bread is fab-- I got the almost grilled cheese and it was really good. We also shared a veggie cobb sandwich on whole wheat which was awesome too. The sandwiches are gigantic and I love how all the bread is made right there. The peanut butter cookies were yummy too- along with the butterscotch latte!

we ate at the cafe-- I liked their indoor seating but wish there was more outdoor seating as it was a really nice day. I will go again for sure!

Five stars for taking the Bread and Cie thing to a whole 'nother level when it comes to sandwiches.

One star for crazy owner who needs a good lay. She is always awkward with people, and then chased me down for 25 cents when I accidently took the wrong baguette. CHASED ME DOWN. I was outside. She also has an upcharge for a pat of butter. Are you kidding?

5 stars for the Chive Gruyere Sourdough bread!  But you can only get it on Thurs, Sat, or Sun.

Having lived in France I really appreciate the importance of bread, yes simply bread.  It's not that white stuff we had as a kid that was anything close to wonder"ful", it's the hand made simple combination of water, yeast, and flour that yield so many different types of bread.  Con Pane is one of only a handful of bakeries that are making amazing breads.  I love coming here for many reasons; the fragrance of freshly baked bread, the sight of the big open bakery, and tearing off the bubbly crusty exterior of their sourdough bread.

Another of my favorites is their Gorgonzola, red onion, and walnut focaccia which is a savory round mounded high with an exquisite flavor combination.  You really can't go wrong here.  I've never ordered from the cafe but with the quality of their bread and the sandwiches I've seen other people order I think it's a good bet that they too deserve 5 stars.

well, that doest matter, so much as that it is HERE and it has been FOUND. my very first time here i didn't know what to expect, i ordered a sandwich and cup of coffee. little did i know, i could only eat half the sandwich. they are HUGE.

next time, i will make sure to get the half sandwich combo. as i know it will suffice.

the bread here is to die for.

I think Con Pana is actually one of the better bread and sandwich joints here in San Diego. Its a bit trippy of a set up as the bakery is actually an old bank and its said that they keep all the bread recipes locked up in in the old vault.
Just kidding.
Anyway the selection of bread is vast, fresh and interesting. Prices are quite reasonable. Cinnamon rolls are the bomb. I particularly like Turkey Club with avo, applewood bacon and sun dried tomatoes.
Be advised that they are cash and check only ( who rolls around with their checkbook anymore?). Parking is usually not too much of an issue. Enjoy!

If not for the lack of parking, crazy local, cash or check only... I'd give it a 5...

this place is one of my favorite sandwich bakeries. Artisan bread give plain old wonder bread a run for their money. The sandwiches and baked good they have are amazing and unlike any other gourmet sandwich places in San Diego. Everything is fresh, savory and aromatic.

Fantastic on every level.  The bread is so yummy.  My hair place is across the street, and I make sure I stop at Con Pane each time I get my hair cut.  I sometimes will bring my hair dresser a loaf of the grueyere and chive bread, which she absolutely loves.

The sandwiches are delicious.  The vegetarian cobb sandwich on multi grain, and the "almost grilled" cheese on rosemary olive bread are fantastic.  Melted brie?  How can you go wrong, really?

I highly recommend a stop here!

Con Pane is practically down the street from the place that I work, so I usually eat here a couple of times a month.

They have various sandwiches, daily breads and then weekly breads.  Two of my favorites:  the Turkey Cobb and the Almost Grilled Cheese.  My co-workers and I call this place the "foo foo" sandwich place.  It's not your average subway.  Bread here is baked fresh daily.

It is a hassle sometimes how they only take cash or check here.  You would think that a place this popular and busy would have a credit card machine.  Also, they're closed on Wednesdays.  So if you want a sandwich in the middle of the week, you're out of luck.

I think I prefer a good bread over flowers. Con Pane bakes daily pastries (rustic scones, brioche cinnamon rolls and cookies,) and breads such as baguettes and speciality breads available on certain days. Between the Slices is their sandwich offerings.

The Gruyere and Chive bread is made with unbleached wheat flour, olive oil, imported gruyere, chives and sea salt. The crust snaps with a crunch when I twist off a piece right after buying it. It's only available on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The sharpness of the gorgonzola and the sweetness of the red onion is a nice contrast in flavors in the Gorgonzola, Red Onion and Walnut Focaccia. The pastries and bread are baked fresh daily and takes about two days to make using a natural starter.

Con Pane's motto is "eat more bread." I think I will...

Chocolate bread with chunks of dark chocolate, peanut butter cookies with caramelized peanuts, scones with actual almond slices and real fruit... ... I gained two pounds just waiting in line. When I finally get to the counter, I can't make up my mind. The coffee & latte is much better than Starbucks & Pete's combined! Very clean & has a clear view of the bakers. Closed on Wednesday and cash only! Special breads baked throughout the week.   My favorite and a favorite of our out of town guests.

chocolate hazelnut brioche...4 stars for this alone! a buttery, sugary cinnamon roll...4 stars for sure! friday challa, slightly sweet, moist, egg-y bread...oh yeah, 4 stars, no doubt! a maple, oat, walnut scone...earns 4 stars easy!

con pane is great...but i seem to be on this customer service kick lately in my old age. why-oh-why can't these private businesses deliver on the service? why can't you crack a smile? why can't you say 'thank you' when i hand over my hard-earned bit 'o my teacher's salary? is it really SO difficult to even say 'you're welcome' when i say 'thank you'???

of course i come back, because the product is so good, but to do so grudgingly really pisses me off, and that just ain't right.

went here for the first time last weekend and it made me feel like i was in europe.  sitting on the sidewalk, sipping coffee, and eating rustic bread.  i ordered the savory plate where i got to chose three breads, and got goat cheese, pesto, and olive oil as toppings.  i got the sourdough, the rosemary, and the gruyere and chive bread.  the portions were more than generous and probably amounted to more than an entire loaf of bread. luckily i was able to restrain myself and brought the bulk of it home for toast. great for a different morning breakfast, sandwiches for lunch, or for grabbing a loaf to go for a picnic or dinner.

This used to be a staple lunch spot for me when I worked in Point Loma. Now that I don't, it's rare that I eat down there and I must admit... I miss Con Pane. Freshly baked breads and pastries, interesting sandwiches all made with quality ingredients.  I usually get the veggie cobb, refreshing twist on the generic veggie sandwich. I really like that you can order a whole or half sandwich, if you're not that hungry or want to eat more cookies.  They are usually pretty quick, but didn't have any ice(!?) last time I was there.
It is cash only and you can't get a sandwich on one of the special breads of the day, unless you buy the whole loaf, bummer.

The place has great bread bottom line. THe cinnamon rolls are really good if you are into dessert for breakfast. The best sandwich on the menu hands down is turkey cobb. Price is right not too pricey ...

the only bad thing I can say is that the size of the sandwiches have got a lot smaller since i first started going 5 years ago .

The pluses- great place to read the paper & sip on coffee; the best cinnamon rolls next to my husband's homemade ones; generous portions on the sweet & savory bread plates; very fast & friendly service, even during the busy lunch hour.  Can't wait to try their sandwiches, but on bread like theirs they're probably most tasty.

The minuses- they don't take VISA, close at 6p, closed on WEdnes.

Excellent food and lattes.  The first sandwich on the menu is delicious (I believe it's the turkey cobb).  The sun-dried tomatoes and the cheese can make it taste pretty strong, but you can always ask them to go light on those and the sandwich is amazing either way.  I also recommend their butterscotch latte - super tasty with homemade butterscotch topping!  The fresh bread and pastries are great as well.  Big, fat 5 stars for Con Pane Bakery & Cafe.

better than Bread & Cie in HIllcrest; best bread i've had in san diego.  they also make amazing cookies and cinnamon rolls.  darn good coffee too.  people rave about the turkey cobb, but i wasn't blown away by it--the cheese and too-pungent sundried tomatoes overwhelmed the sandwich.

my regular order is to split a bread plate with my partner--she predictably announces halfway through our breakfast that she's going to get a refill of coffee and she comes out with more treats: cinnamon rolls, cookies, you name it.  i love this place too much.

the only downside is the clientele.  it's that point loma overmonied, stuffy, stare-at-me-in-line kinda crowd.  for such good bread, i deal with it.

Fresh Bread, with bits o' olives in it.

Open in the morning-ish times, this place is one of the biggest treats chain ridden Point Loma has to offer.

Week-ends it gets so busy there are lines but it offers up Manhattan class bread, food and atmosphere. It's got an open style where you can see all the baking going on. Go there, you won't be sorry that you did.

The only thing I'd like more is if they were open at night and offered Free Wi-Fi...

Few things I look for in a rustic bread bakery: good dry fruit, good nuts, good flour. Con Pane has it all. I love their raisin and hazelnut bread. Those raisins are HUGE... I really wonder where they got it from. Their breads are good, just the right sourness with the right chewy-ness. And I LOVE their Cinnamon bun. It's the best I've had yet. And they had a chocolate bread teddy bear for valentine's day. It's so cute... and tasty =) I ate more than half of that bear in 1 day............

one bad thing, their coffee is barely warm, and expect at least a 15 minute wait for the food. why does it take so long to make a sandwiche????

Great little place in a cool, laid-back part of Point Loma. The scones are excellent, and their bread is delicious too, I like the anise fig (I hope I'm not confused with Bread & Cie's bread on this one). The sweet and savory bread plates are great for sampling the specialties of the day, and can easily be split between two. At $3-$4 a plate, it's a freakin steal.

they only take cash.  in this day and age, why?!

the french baguettes aren't as good as the real thing, but pretty damn good none the less.  the olive bread is good - especially with brie!  the chocolate bread on saturdays is excellent too - not too sweet, but still satisfies the craving.  closed on wednesdays which is another downer.  I can't count the number of times i'd be heading to the OB farmer's market - wanted to stop and grab a baguette to go with the olives from the market only to find that they were closed!

don't ask for butter here - they charge for 0.25 for each little pad of butter.  LAME.

but the bread is great.

ooooh and the tomato garlic and cream cheese foccacia is fab!

A consultant showed up at my office with a large box of some of the best cookies I've ever had (Butter Toffee Peanut Butter) , so I had to check out the bakery over the weekend. Our order was taken before they told us they didn't accept anything but cash. My husband ran across the street to the ATM and came back to the counter after waiting patiently for other customers to put in their orders only to find out that they would not put in our order until we had paid (come on, we were a well-dressed 30-plus, hungry couple that said we would be back, give us a break!). The roast beef sandwich was delicious and the price was fair, the bread was better than the average chain grocery/bakery, but I couldn't believe they didn't have rye or pumpernickle. Every once in a while if I'm craving a cookie, or MAYBE a roast beef sandwich, I may venture out to Con Pane again, but I will probably just stick with my favorite bakery in Hillcrest where the people-watching is better, the ambiance is better, the overall product is better and I'm always greeted with a smile.

OMG can you say, Chocolate Bread. Yes it really is to die for. Screw the carbs. Oh wait, did you see that sticky bun. Geeeezus! I swear I never had a better sticky bun in my life. Oh that is a cinnamon bun for all you n00bs out there. DO NOT go in this place during certain times of the month. You have been warned.

You should also try the other breads like their sourdough and rosemary bread. It is my all time favorite that is not smeared with sugar icing or filled with chocolate. The sandwiches are really good too. The Roast Beast and the Turkey with Gorgonzola are great choices.
