It looks like this place has been renamed the Corner Cafe. I haven't had the coffee drinks yet, but I did try their lunch special one day while walking by, after the "recession special" (a PB&J) on their sign made me smile.
I opted for the grown-up grilled cheese, with turkey and a pesto-ey spread. The combo came with the sandwich, veggie chips, a pickle, a canned soda or tea, and pudding for $7.40. The sandwich was very tasty and the service was nice. The space is small, but relaxing. I will check them out again when I need a time-out from a hectic day and a coffee pick-me-up or bag lunch.
Update:
There is actually free parking in the garage closest to the coffee shop down West Avenue. It's only a 25 yard walk.
I'm officed in an adjacent building in the same Midtown Medical office complex at the corner of 38th and Lamar. I had heard about this coffee place from a coworker but had never made it over until recently because in my drowsy morning stupor, I had normally headed over the Diamond Shamrock across the street for $ .79 cup of joe instead of something a little more tasty.
Well, they are busy transforming the Diam Shamrock to a Valero so they've been closed the last week or so and I decided to give Compassionate Beans a shot. What a great decision! For all you hippies out there (I kid) , The owner, Bau, only sells Fair Trade Coffee, hence the name. However, this does not translate to higher prices. You can get a 16 oz of pretty much anything for under $3 and it is thoughtfully and expertly made. They are only staffed by Bau himself, so he puts the extra effort into each cup and it shows.
They also sell the normal assortment of morning pastries, muffins, and snacks and some other stuff including yerba mate.
The location is small and in the corner of the building, but the seating is comfortable and there are several nice tables and chairs outside to sit and enjoy the day. He offers WiFi for free (f- you starbucks and tmobile) and even has a computer set up for guests to use.
If you work in the Medical complex area I highly recommend dropping by.
Please stop by and give Compassionate Beans and Bau Pham a warm hello and a shot at your coffee and tea business!
When looking for the address for this review I stumbled on this webpage with more info on Bau and his business plan for Compassionate Beans: http://www.morningbrew...
Today was my second visit to Compassionate Beans, and I'd highly recommend it to anyone.
It has:
- high quality coffee for less
- a wide variety of coffees, teas, snacks and sandwiches
- easy parking
- and fast and WONDERFUL service!
The owner makes a point to give above and beyond service at every opportunity. He calls you by name and makes comfortable conversation while you're waiting for your coffee to brew. And he's very attentive to providing top quality products and making sure you got exactly what you need.
When I ordered a sandwich this morning to take into work, he let me know exactly how to cook it to get the best results.
Try Compassionate Beans out. It was a great experience for me and a much better alternative to the Starbucks at 45th and Lamar.
