I love this place!
I've been here a few times already. I came here as an after event for my birthday here a couple of years ago and had a blast!!
Its a small bar with comfortable seatings and games who doesnt love games! They had Jenga there which we changed it up and made it truth or dare jenga.
Its a great hangout spot to just chill and hang out with your friends. The service is pretty good here as well.. But i do have to say get here earlier as it gets pretty packed here. -

4 stars for the actual bar, but I'm forced to give Common Ground 3 stars due to the lackluster food. I love bar food. Sometimes when you're binge drinking, you need greasy food to sop it up. However, don't expect to find that here. Common Ground's kitchen is trying a bit too much to be fancy when in reality, it's a bar. A group of us came last night for trivia night (FANTASTIC fun by the way) and thought it would be wise for us to take advantage of the happy hour food deals. Yikes, it turned out to be a disaster.
We ordered Ellen's Famous Shrimp Dip, the Smoked Chicken Quesadilla, and the French Bread Pizza with Proscuitto and Artichoke Hearts, and a variety of their paninis. The Shrimp Dip was a disaster - it looked like hummus but tasted strangely fishy. I know, I know, who orders shrimp dip at a dive bar. Our group basically left it untouched and after 30 minutes, it started to give off a funky smell. Don't order this. The quesadilla was average and the paninis were so so. I'd say the best tasting thing of the night would definitely be the pizza. But load tons of melted cheese on a piece of bread and you just can't go wrong.
On to the good/best part of Common Ground: the games! They have my absolute favorites - Scattergories, Taboo, and Jenga! If you're into interactive dates, this is a great option. Drinks over Connect 4 - fun, no? And every Wednesday, Common Ground hosts the most challenging trivia night I've ever gone to. The announcer is highly entertaining and pokes fun at the rowdy crowd. Round up a group of friends and come on down to test your geography, wine, world history etc. knowledge. Trivia starts at 9 PM but the bar fills up around 8:30. I'd suggest coming a little earlier than 8:30 if you are looking to save a spot for your group. -

This past Friday night was unlike anything I had EVER experienced at ANY BAR, EVER. I was having a great night until the two female bartenders were unbelievably insulting and rude to me (and it turns out to one of my other friends as well). After sitting at the bar and chatting with friends and 3 rounds of drinks, I tried to get the attention of a bartender and they wouldn't even acknowledge me, much less serve me. Eventually they served the girl next to me and told me that they would not serve me because I had been glaring at them and they were scared what I would do if they gave me a drink. YES, really. I thought that sitting at the bar and looking at the bartender's FACES to try to make eye contact with them to indicate I was ready for their attention, was polite and patient. Apparently not.
I was stunned, insulted, upset, confused. So many different thoughts and questions were coming to mind- What just happened?! Was I really that drunk? Could that have been possible? Wait, my tab was only $8 (I bought a round for a friend), I only had 3 drinks throughout the entire 3 hours there. WHAT?! Wait, the bartender said she was scared of me because of the way I was looking at her! What does that even mean? Should I have been looking at her boobs instead?
Immediately after that exchange, my friend beside me confirmed my suspicions that their statement was outrageous. He asked that my tab be closed (by now I had walked away and was tearing up) and told my friends what had happened. They were just as stunned as I was and we decided to leave. At that point I tried to write a note on the receipt, but it was way too dark, my eyes were way too teary and I was way too angry to be able to have really convey to the bartenders how upset they made me.
What happened that night? Maybe I should have smiled more, shown more cleavage flirted with the bartenders like at every other bar. Maybe I should be thankful, right? I only spent $8! Thank you Common Ground bartenders, for saving my wallet and ruining my night. Thank you so much.
Unfortunately, I now say DO NOT COME HERE. Spend your well earned happy hour dollars elsewhere. I should have listened to the friends who decided to leave the bar after one drink. -

I would've had a great time if the bar tender wasn't so rude. On January 21, 2011, I threw my 23rd bday shin dig there. Everything was fine, the quesadilla was delicious, the beer was great and the drinks? They were pretty good. The price is right. I don't usually write reviews, but here's the problem:
The entire bar was filled with my friends, well, I will say 4/5 of the bar were there for me. I reserved the sitting area, which was great. However, you would think there would be better service for a party flow of 80 or so people. My friends traveled from Connecticut and brought me a petite bottle of champagne to ring in my birthday and we opened it to have a sip. Here is where the problem began, we did not know we were not allowed to open the bottle- yes it's a bar- but seriously, it's a birthday and my friends just spent tons of cash here- cool- we can't drink it, fine, that doesn't bother me... The issue was the bartender, she yelled at us for opening the bottle. It's not ok to yell at customers. It ruined my mood by yelling at me for not knowing I wouldn't be able to drink it. Moving forward, she said, if I catch you again, I'm kicking you out.
Really? Place is cool, but it's not cool enough for a horrible horrible bartender. We were there from 6pm- close. no excuse. The only reason I didn't leave, was because I told my party to arrive at Common Grounds at whatever time they feel like it....
I would never ever again. Because she was HORRIBLE. and her DRINKS were HORRIBLE! and she gave away my quesadilla TWICE!-- before the whole incident occurred.Comment from Daniel W. of Common Ground 12/10/2011

I found this place after searching for a fun bar that offered a Friday Happy Hour on http://Yelp.com. Thanks to those who gave Common Ground a good review! :) I planned a get-together with some friends last Friday and we had a great time. We were even able to make a reservation for a table in the back with short notice. The drink specials were GOOD and not weak and we loved that they have board games for the patrons to play while we were there. We played Jenga and after a few hours and a few drinks, it became much more fun to play because they dimmed the lights. lol :P The bar food was delicious also. I had a French bread mini pizza. The waitstaff was very friendly and attentive. I liked that the place was crowded on a Friday night but not so much that you had 20 people waiting to use the restroom at once. :) I will definitely recommend this place for a fun time!

Board games in a bar? SURE! WHY NOT?! I mean if you want to go out, but still have a good "homey" time without having to brush up against, strange, possibly STD- ridden people at a club, this is the place to be!
Common Ground is the place to be when you just want to sit back, relax and have a few laughs with friends while you're slowing kicking back a $2 Yeungling (on Tuesdays). The general feel of this place is very welcoming and great to come in with a group. (I mean how else can you get your board game on?!)
Appetizers were great! My husband and I ordered the French Bread Chicken and Avocado Pizza. Whole, and I mean WHOLE chunks of avocado, baked on top of warm french bread... I have an obsessive passion for avocado, so of course this was a winner for me. I sampled my brother's quesadilla, and that was good too! Service was a little slow that day (for food), but it's all forgiven because my presence was graced with fellow yelpers sending out holiday cards to our troops overseas.
Overall it was a great time! -

Free shot, beer, wine, or well drink with a ONE Yelp check-in? Of course, I'm a fan! Especially since you're half a block from my apartment, have an assortment of new, old school board games (e.g., Connect Four), play LCD Soundsystem three songs in a row, and have a fake, kitschy kitchen in the back as decor (I wanted to steal the food processor).
The bartender was even sweet enough to allow my less-privileged, Blackberry-using friend to double up on my check-in since her phone wasn't letting her access Yelp. A good portion of the crowd was dressed business casual which was weird though. -
Review from Julia D.
What a cute place! I love the concept behind a bar where you can play games with your friends, and which doesn't cost you so much extra for the fact that you get a different bar experience.
Common Ground is very reasonably priced and they have lots of great drink specials, and they have a great variety of games for you to play! The only drawback is that unless you get extremely lucky (which we did), finding a table to play on will be difficult without reservations in advance. If you DO make reservations, though, Common Ground will be fantastic for groups. Otherwise you might come here and have the traditional no-game bar experience for lack of space to play.
It's bummer that they stop serving food pretty early on in the evening, but nice that the bartenders don't hassle you once you're at a table to continuously buy more and more drinks. They let you chill out and have a good time, which is a welcome change to most Friday night bar atmospheres. -
Review from Darwin G.
I recently threw my birthday party here and it was great. The front area was sufficient for a party of around 10. The place is quite nice and the bar area has a touch of sophistication to it.
The board games are a huge plus and we played drinking game with Trivial Pursuit where we basically passed the cards around, a person chose a category, if they got the question wrong, they drank. Simple and a bit boring, but hey, it's drinking, that never gets boring.
The games were surprisingly in good condition, I guess the patrons are gentle with them... -
Review from Janine C.
Had so much fun on a double date here the other night. Although the space could use some sprucing up and couple more sets of board games, Common Grounds has the makings of a great time.
We played Clue (which isn't as much fun as I thought it was when I was 10 and probably cheating), Jenga (which featured hilarious comments on the pieces) and Taboo (which was by far the most fun).
This is a great place to head to if you're looking for more than just a drink with friends and you don't want to spend too much money! -
Review from Maeve C.
Board games + beer = exponentially increased childhood fun. Somehow, all those games you played as a kid are even more fun now, both because it's fun to reminisce, and also because those games still rock. I had a lot of fun a few weeks ago with a big group of people, and even after the bar got noisy and crowded we had a good time huddled in our cozy table.
The bar itself is really inviting and has some nice comfy booths, along with a good beer selection. We weren't in time to try any of the food, but the manager was accommodating since we had a reservation and made sure we were well-situated. Overall, Common Ground was a fun place and a nice departure from bars where the only game is watching people hit on each other/wagering bets on how much I'm going to regret my bar tab the next morning. -

A laid back place, great happy hour deals on food and drink. After 8 PM, get any draft beer and a shot of whiskey for $8. The best thing about this place is the board games. Jenga and Would You Rather with a group of friends over delicious appetizers and paninis is a great way to spend the night. I recommend the bruschetta with hummus and the turkey club panini.

Ive been coming here for the better part of a year and Common Ground has slowly turned into my "go-to" bar. Always friendly bartenders and staff with a pretty cool mix of people. They have open mic nights and also trivia Wednesday, which I have yet to win but I SWEAR I WILL! Anyway, a group of about 15 of us came here to ring in the New Year and again, we were not disappointed. We arrived around 10pm when the crowd was just starting to get there, but our reserved tables were empty and waiting for us. As the hours clocked by, none of us had any problem getting a drink, playing the jukebox or going to the bathroom (minus a few 'excuse me's' as you accidentally stepped on someones feet). All-in, this was well handled and a really great time! A+ to the bartenders for working your asses off and making sure we all had drinks at midnight! When my hangover passes me, say next week, Ill be back.

What to do when you're looking for fun in the alphabet city outskirts? Drinks here are super cheap even outside of happy hour. A beer and a rum and coke for $13.00!? Awesome. One bartender on a Tuesday night and the place was pretty quiet. I guess what really got us in here was the board games they make available which helped make the night a bit more entertaining. Also, they got me when the guy in back started cooking up some bacon. Which resulted in us ordering some bacon wrapped dates. Slightly disappointed that the bacon wasn't as crispy as it looked but decent bar food none the less......probably only because it was bacon! Definitely a cool chill atmosphere with cheap drinks, just my kind of place.

I haven't reviewed this place? Seriously? I met my wife here. My review should be like featured, or something. Anyway, this isn't a real review, because I have had one bottle and two glasses of wine tonight, but a real review will follow. I guess it will have to be posted as an update.
The 5 star rating is legit, though. The lemonade and bourbon drink is awesome. The ham panini is ridiculous. I love the board games, and I love that Google Chrome underlines the misspelled words to make me seem less drunk. -

A bunch of friends and I decided to get together for a much needed Happy Hour last week at Common Ground yhanks to Yelp buddy Betsey C. and man what a great time!
We arrived early (5:30) to live the Happy Hour to the fullest. The Happy Hour menu was fairly insane. $2 Yeungling?! $4 margaritas? And best of all, buy two appetizers and get one free! Lots of props for the VERY tantalizing deal!
The decor of Common Ground is very nice with lots of dark wood, cushy red seats and cool chandeliers overhead. There's plenty of space and the bar never got overcrowded.
I pretty much had Yeungling all night but others had the Margaritas and Cosmos, enjoying them thoroughly. We ordered many appetizers but the standouts for me were the Dates with almonds inside wrapped in...wait for it...bacon! I also loved their hummus, which had a nice kick to it.
The bartender who took care of us (Michelle IIRC) was awesome. Friendly, sweet, efficient and gorgeous. The wait staff was blazingly efficient, clearing away plates and glasses at lightning speed.
Another fun note is the assortment of board games available to play! Our group had fun with everything from Jenga to Scrabble. Fun times for sure!
Common Ground was awesome funa nd I look forward to my next visit. -
Review from Tom K.
Common ground is the place where everyone knows your game.
Cheers to a bar that includes ample board games to amuse, entertain and energize gatherings. Test your crap detector in a game of "Fact or Crap". Try not to spill a Jenga tower into your beer and revel in the naughty writings on the blocks, many of which involve body parts. See if you can still spell a passing semblance of words in Scrabble.
Past the open air area, bar and tables for two is where you'll find the bookshelves that house the various games listed (and more).
But what makes Common Ground more than an exciting place to unwind and engage in board sport is the quality and cost of food and drink.
Happy hour, which runs from 4-8pm M-F (and 12-7pm Sat/Sun) is where you'll get the most bang for the buck. $2 pints of Yuengling! $5 cosmos! Buy two appetizers, get one free!
And what appetizers as my sampling turned up nothing but winners. Proscuitto and parmesan with a fig balsamic vinegar was sliced perfection, especially the healthy sprinkling of cheese on top.
Almond-stuffed dates wrapped in bacon could be popped rapidly and would be dangerous to consume if sitting in front of a TV-- addiction may ensue.
Peel 'n' eat shrimp steamed in beer and old bay seasoning- the shrimp came in a glass and where, well, a bit on the shrimpy side of size. Not that I objected to the seasoning which really enhanced the flavor.
And finally, the Smoked chicken quesadilla. This was probably the most satisfying of the appetizers. Six pieces, enough for two people to easily share, with a tasty filling.
On a friday night the place became more crowded as happy hour expired. I suggest arriving early to claim prime real estate and your choice of games. The bartender was able to quickly pour, shake, stir and smile simultaneously, making for an easy ordering experience. (As opposed to bars where you are neglected and left to sulk in a corner.)
All in all, an uncommonly good experience at Common Ground can be had-- let the games begin! -
Review from Devin D.
GREAT for after work drinks. Awesome happy hour, drink specials, and board games! I liked this place a lot, it has a pretty chill atmosphere and the usual crowd seems down to earth (which is always a good thing). I spent close to five hours here and didn't even realize it @_@ I hear the food is nice too, I'll def be back to try it :-)

Went here for happy hour with a friend, for their "Buy Two get one Free, appetizers and Panini" and $5 Cosmo and Apple Martini HH specials.
Ordered:
Smashed Chickpea and Garlic Bruchetta.. and all i have to say is HOLY GARLIC BREATH. Waaaaay too garlic-y and the bruchettta was rock solid, you could barely bite into it. NOT a fan.
However, we ordered the Mozzarella, tomato, basil, and red onion AND Goat cheese, artichoke hearts, and balsamic vinegar paninis. They were VERY YUMMMY!! Large portions, so if you're just looking for a light snack with your cosmos, I would suggest splitting one. The Goat cheese panini was VERY flavorful, but super rich!!!
Thumbs up on the drinks.. I tried the appletini and the cosmo, and definitely preferred the cosmo - but both were yummy.
Cool atmosphere, trivia nights, and big private booths in the back past the bar! and....BOARD GAMES! -

[ Part 1 of Sophie's April Weekend in New York series ]
Common Ground's happy hour is pretty sweet, which is what attracted me to it in the first place. Boyfriend and I were in town this weekend to visit some friends and agreed that this would be a decent spot to meet up with everyone.
The atmosphere is chill; you can either sit at the bar or hang out on the couches with the large coffee tables.
The list of appetizers had me really stoked about the buy2get1free deal; a few of us shared the proscuitto/parmesan/fig balsamic plate, the hummus plate, and the shrimp dip.
The prosciutto and parmesan plate wasn't bad; the prosciutto was good and the sharpness of the parmesan was on point but I think it's too dry a cheese to pair with prosciutto. It was also diced into tiny cubes, which made it really awkward to eat.
The hummus was bland and the shrimp dip sort of tasty but mostly boring.
But Yuengling is Yuengling and at $2 a pint, I could have stayed until the end of happy hour... but we were all hungry and the music was getting louder so we decided to leave.
Overall, Common Ground is ok. It's not the best place to eat (unless you sit at the bar) or catch up with friends, but if you want to just hang out, play board games, and have cheap drinks, this is a good option. -

An excellent spot to host my recent bday gathering. On a hot Saturday night, the AC was divine, the music was a nice mix, and they took care of the bday girl with a reserved table and a couple of free drinks. It got busy as the night progressed (as expected), but never unruly.
The board games and casual drink/food deals on a weekday happy hour make it feel like a grownup after-school play date destination. And I hope to return to defend my connect four prowess. -

I came here for happy hour last Wednesday with a friend. We definitely enjoyed ourselves, drinking $5 wines and enjoying appetizers (buy 2 get 1 free). We got there at about six, so we were able to get a seat at the bar. The night we went turned out to be trivia night, so it filled up pretty quickly.
For food, we had the chicken quesadillas (our favorite!), some sort of old-bay-peel-yourself shrimp (just okay) and prosciutto with parmesan cheese cubes (tasty, but needed some bread or something to account for the saltiness).
I would come here again, and maybe even stay for trivia night which started at 9 pm. -

Common Ground,
I like that you have board games and a decent selection of beer. I also like that you can reserve a whole section of seating for your birthday and not have to pay for it. However, it is too loud to enjoy the board games or even hear your friends in your wonderfully reserved seating area! Take the Friday night noise level down a notch and maybe I'll come back.
Yours,
Alexis -

You know it's a fun night when you're hanging out on the sofas of Common Ground, arguing who is going to be Mrs. White, trying to determine whether you can bribe your banker, or imagining how many "Things that Fly" begin with the letter "T."*
For those who do not have the same affinity towards board games as most of us, there is plenty of room by the bar to hang out and enjoy the decent selection of beer and inexpensive drinks (strong vodka sodas are $7 after happy hour). Please have some courtesy and don't hog the couches though, we have some important games of Connect Four and Othello to play.
Trivia nights on Wednesday feature 3 to 4 categories, which you can preview by following Common Ground on Twitter. The prizes are great (usually a decent bit of money for a bar tab), which is why Common Ground hosts one of my favorite trivia nights in the city.
My latest experience: not the best. A group that had reserved a table did not show up immediately. After 15 minutes, we were told the table was ours and embarked on an epic game of Monopoly. After an hour and 15 minutes, we were told by another waiter to "pack it up" because the group with the reservation had arrived. I'm sorry, but if this was anywhere else in Manhattan, you lose your reservation, especially after an hour and 15 minutes.
But I was probably more irate because I was scheming to buy Park Place.
* Board Game Player Pro-Tip: Bring your own writing instruments. Because none of the games have any. -
Review from Nydia C.
I came here for the first time a little over a week ago and the fact that I returned here earlier tonight is a good thing. Initially I went here to meet up with a Yelper for Happy Hour. The bar itself is cute, nothing fancy but it has plenty of couch areas to lounge in which is always a plus for me. Happy Hour consists of drink specials and buy 2 get 1 free apps and paninis. During my first visit I stuck to the appetizers which were all pretty good and more interesting than typical bar food. My favorite were the bacon wrapped dates! Tonight my friend and I split an appetizer and each had a pannini. They were pretty good and came with veggies and dip instead of fries which I loved.
Overall definitely a great place for happy hour and good food. I'll most likely revisit in the future. -

After walking around one sunny, hot, humid, 100 degree July afternoon. I saw a sign in front of a bar that said, "COLD A/C IN HERE." I went in, duh.
Service: Good Bartender service, paid cash all night no buybacks though, I like a bar with buybacks, lets me tip more.
Food: The paninis were very good, I also had the french bread pizza. The food did take about 45 minutes to come but it was very busy.
Beer: Good happy hour specials 2 dollar drafts on certain domestics, which gets you drunk for under a 20 dollar bill. Selection was normal for an average bar.
Bar: A Bar with enough board games, including the really fun and difficult to play on alcohol ... jenga .. will keep you and your friends entertained when conversation and shots isn't enough. -

OK, so I've guilted myself into writing a review. I come here a LOT. And not only because it's uber convenient to my house (us Avenue A-er's gotta stick togetha!), but because of the fantastic happy hour special.
Let me start by saying one thing. Two dolla Yuenglings. That is all.
Oh wait, I'm lying gosh darn it! Amazingly crisp, flavor-filled paninis (all food is 2-for-1 during happy hour). Which MEANS that I can drag all my friends out to Avenue A and they will revoke their bitchin' about having to come to Alphabet City once they get drunk off ten bucks and have a taste of a delicious mozzarella and basil pressed panini.
Also, they have board games for the (rare) times it is overly crowded because they just got a write up in TONY and you have to wait ONE HOUR for your panini.Listed in: Alphabet City/East Village

3.5 stars.
I came on a Wednesday during their happy hour. What attracted me was their food deal - buy 2 appetizers or paninis and get 1 free. $2 yuenglings or miller lites, $4 well drinks, $5 cosmos or apple martini.
Appetizers:
- Hummus platter: it was okay considering it was a bar. The pita was good. They also gave a few vegetables and olives
- Chicken quesadilla: good
- Smashed chickpeas and garlic bruchetta: had way too much garlic (and I'm Korean where we put garlic in everything)
The bartender was cool and knows how to make a cosmo! It was quiet but started to fill up as we were leaving (around 7:30). I liked the overall look and feel - very cozy. AND they have board games!Listed in: NYC Nightlife, Happy Hour

I don't think there's anything spectacular about this bar that makes it different than most other bars in the area. They do have a good happy hour. They also have board games which sadly I didn't get a chance to take advantage of when I came here.
This bar is getting a four star review from me because sometimes I can be incredibly shallow. I'll be the first to admit it. Now I don't know if this is a regular occurrence at this bar or it was just the night I went, but every guy in this bar was so cute! I was like in boy heaven. Sadly I was there on a date with the only boy at the bar who wasn't cute. (He was a bit of a douche so I don't even feel bad saying this.)
I definitely plan on coming back here with a few of my girls. -
