This is such a legit place for comics! The man who sits behind the counter most of the time, his name is Jason, he knows EVERYTHING about comics! There are comics from back in the day to today! Don't even think about going to any other comic book store.
Plus, everyone who works there is so f'ing friendly, and just legit people overall.
This is my first review on yelp and this place made me do it. This place is one of the best comic shops in the culver city/marina del rey area... I say that not because its huge and they have everything i could ever want, but they do have plenty of comics. You can go there and get what you need and talk to people that are knowledgeable about comics.
I've tried the other comic shops nearby and it seems that they order only a few comics to make it feel like they are the place that everyone want to go. Comics Ink doesnt need to do this they have plenty and are all was helpful.
Comics Ink is a great shop and I recommend it to everyone
Middle of the road comic shop, really.
If I'm on the set over on Sony or just around the area on a Wednesday and I'm jonesing for my fix, I'll come in here for my issue of Captain America. But I wouldn't make it a regular comic shop.
The lack of back issues is a problem. They don't seem to have much comics past two months back. A bit understandable considering it's such a small shop, it still is a hold up when you're talking about an industry that tells its tales 20 pages at a time.
They do wonders with trades though. They seem to have even the rarer to find HC's here. They don't deal with toys or much of anything that isn't bound on paper. So that's a positive thing that doesn't always happen in comic shops. No need to waste the space on non-books. I can enjoy a comic related toy every now and then, but still.. Not always needed.
Very small shop as well. It gets the extra star to push it to four stars because of the indie section they have in the shop. It's pretty decent and while I love my main stream titles, it's always nice to read something small press from time to time.
This reminds me of the good ole comic book shops I grew up with. Resident nerd gossip and chat.. a barrel of laughs and rad workers.
I'm pretty surprised people have had problems with the service here. I was heading there late today to pick up a recommended title and walked right in to get asked if I needed any help. Not only did they help me get exactly what I wanted quickly, but they were more than happy to assist me in back issues or anything else I may have wanted.
The store doesn't have a wide selection of indie books or vinyl. If you want indies you're going to have to go to Melrose or pick something up over at Big Robot 2.
Comics Ink is a medium sized store that is very well organized
"Between him being the financials and me having OCD, this place is covered."
The guys will joke around and talk shop with you. Despite the fact that I have girl parts, not only did they treat me well, but it was like one of the guys. There were laughs to be had and books traded. I really need to make more time just to hang out there when I go on a Wednesday.
Added perk was that they remembered me and gave me a discount. So the book I was recommended was basically free. Awesome. So now I have a stack of books to read and comic book reviews to write.
Thanx Ink for making me remember a little piece of that childhood like home.
The nearby Dream World Comics definitely has a more distinct fan and geeky atmosphere. But I've found that when I'm looking for some newly released comic, I've had much better luck finding it at the atmosphere-less Comics Ink (Dream World seems to be constantly out-of-stock).
Comics Ink is no frills as is the service, but when you just need to get in and get out, this is a pretty good option.
A definite gem in Culver City! Tiny store with a stellar collection. Steve and staff (especially Jason) are friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I'm more indie than mainstream, I don't read a lot of superhero titles, and if my name didn't clue you in, I'm a girl, but none of that matters in Comics Ink.
The store is always clean and well organized. Recent back issues are right there behind the new issues making it easy if you've missed a week (or 2 or 3 or 4 ...). And they give automatic discounts once you've spent more than $20 -- it doesn't get any easier than that!
My only warning -- if you're there on Wednesday, prepare to be entertained by the banter between staff and patrons.
Comics Ink is a straight up comic book shop. It's well organized, clean, and has an old school comic book store vibe... meaning small with an older and nerdy staff.
The staff is always helpful, extremely knowledgeable, and they usually sell their back issues at cover price. (I got Dark Horse's The Goon #2 for 2.99 a few months ago... if you know what that means, then you know how great of a deal I got).
WARNING: The employees and patrons will often argue about or loudly discuss comic books and comic book history.
ALSO: Do no be offended if one of the employees berates you for your taste in comic books or magazines. Seriously, don't let it bother you, the dude I'm thinking of still manages to be super friendly and helpful.
I knocked off a star due to the above. I like my comic book stores to be chill and low key.
Service is a joke here if you are not a die hard cult member.
This is truly a unique community store. You will find rare gems. You will see more of an old school but extremely diverse collection. They do have an incredible amount of comics for such a tiny store.
But again. Service is a joke here. In fact while I was there I even overheard a conversation between an employee and an associate where he talked about just how bad he was at customer service. He listed example on top of example of how much he and other employees went out of their way to not help random customers out, except when it comes to sale.
You really don't come to this store to get lost in it. This is a store where you know what you want before you come in, you run in to pick it up, and get out. Its not set up for exploration at all.
If you want to have a deep, specific conversation with someone who knows what the hell they are talking about, this is place to go to. If you already have a title in mind, this is the place to go .
If not and you are feeling a bit bored, stay away. Far away. Their rude customer service will scar you.
Every Wednesday you'll find me here. I'm usually greeted with a "Not today! Who knows when?!" type of sentence.
The shop is small but it's obvious some thought went into what is on the shelves. I've been introduced to plenty of exceptional indy stuff here because of this store and the product display.
Some back issues but I've had trouble finding some things I wanted. Other gems I haven't seen other places are often hiding out on the bottom shelves.
Great, friendly service is the biggest thing that keeps me coming back.
The selection here is amazing, most titles are in stock and if it's not on the shelf, they either know when it will be in or know why it's not being stocked (i.e. the publisher is months late on delivery). Don't expect touchy-feely customer service, but they will give you awesome recommendations and these guys all read the stuff they stock, so they know everything in the store.
We always spend way too much money here, but never regret it. Space is tight, so browsing is fun but you literally bump into other customers frequently. This is a no nonsense place, wall to wall comics with a few small statues and comic supplies, like bags and boards, for sale.
I'm totally biased because I've had such bad experiences here that I now drive all the way to Manhattan Beach to go to the Comics Bug. It's that bad here.
Maybe the staff is knowledgeable, but I couldn't tell you, since I couldn't get their attention enough to ask the most basic questions. I don't know if it's because I'm female or they treat everyone badly, but even waiting patiently didn't net me any customer service. And all I was trying to do was find a particular book that I was having trouble locating (I did eventually get another customer to help me find it).
I tried again and got the same level of "couldn't be bothered" attitude. And that was it for me and this local shop...now I make the drive. It's worth it.
I've worked in comic shops myself, in both NYC and San Francisco, so I know a bit about the normal level of service to expect and this ain't it.
This is going to be the review that keeps me from getting any attention from the opposite sex for a long time but people need to know about this place, it is worth it! I have only been reading comic for 3 or 4 years but I know a good place when I see it.
I have been looking for a new comic shop for about 6 months because the places I usually go are too far from me now. I found comics ink on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. I compiled a list of all the books I have been missing for several months (about 13 comics) in order to test out how good this place really is then I head out.
I walk in and it is a small place, but there are a lot of people inside. I get a look from the guy working the register that makes me feel like I don't belong there, but that's ok I'll win them over [Comic nerds can be super cute too ;) ] After about 5 minutes I have half of the books on my list plus some that I didn't add because I figured I'd never find them. Then the event that made this my new place happened.
A customer walked up to the register and asked the guy working "How would you rate M.O.D.O.K. in term of intelligence relative to all the other villains in the marvel universe?" My jaw drops because I love when comic geeks argue these things and! it makes me realize this place is run and inhabited by people who love comics and who read comics [And MODOK is a giant floating head with useless tiny arms and legs, a comic shop is really the only place you can ask a question like that safely (well probably not in meltdown)]. The cashier gives him what sounds like an excellent answer, I'm not sure if he is right but it sounded right. I continue shopping.
BY then end I have found every issue on my list and then some. In the last 4 months I have not been able to find any of these issues at any other comic store in LA. That feat in itself is incredible to me. One place had everything I was looking for. The guys working even helped me find the last book I couldn't find then introduced themselves, a few regulars, and were really cool. I think the assortment of comics and back issues made then realize I wasn't just another too cool for his own good looking LA guy wondering in because I heard comic books are cool.
So 50 bucks later my collection is solid now and I have found the place I've been looking for.
I swung by today because I needed to pick up a long box for my budding accidental collection of comics. I've honestly not bought a comic box in probably 15 years, but I now work in the biz so, I seem to accumulate more and more comics as the days go on.
I had all the intention of heading to Dreamworld Comics, but my errands had me passing by Comics Ink. The shop itself is pretty tiny, just an unadorned (for a comic shop) room packed to the gills with comics and trades. As other reviewers have said, this is not the place to buy posters or toys or cards. It's about the books. Just a few small isles in the middle with the new floppies and the walls coated with trades and books. Their organizational system is interesting, kinda grouped by genre and theme, which is odd...but I like it.
I was really surprised at the quality of their stock, a lovely mix of indie, mainstream, and must have classics. A great place to just focus on books.
The other nice perk is that the longboxes are $2 bucks cheaper than at Dreamworld.
Any Comic Book Guy can open a storefront & stock it with 4-color tales of superhuman glory. Few can do it and still retain their dignity.
Steve & friends run this strip-mall oasis. Feel free to ask their opinion about which books to read; which to avoid; which to give as gifts to your 8-year-old nephew; which to give to your 53-year-old boss; and which to send to movie studio execs to stop them from making junk like "Elektra." But don't ask them for Pokemon cards - they don't have 'em. Statues of Lockjaw, yes. Pokemon cards, no.
The most user-friendly and focused comic book store I've ever seen.
The first time I visited Comics Ink, my husband dragged me in on our way to taking me to lunch. Yeah ... you know it ... I was hijacked!
We've been together awhile so I've been dragged into my share of comic book stores from here to Timbuktu... hubby is a designer for computer games so it's all about research for his work. Ehhhemm. Okay.
I'm a girly-girl and would much rather be dragging him to Fred Segal or H&M, so generally, in a matter of minutes, I am bored by the large amounts of superhero stuff and overwhelmed by the utter lack of organization. This store is truly a tale of good things coming in small packages ... In fact the ONLY reason I'm not throwing out a five-star here is because I wish the place was bigger. The shop is totally well organized and they have a great selection of graphic novels that aren't your typical superhero fare (not that there is anything wrong with that).
I must admit that because they're so well organized and the staff is so knowledgeable I picked up a few things for myself to read the last few times were were in the store. With so many graphic novels becoming movies these days, a gal in LA has to stay ahead of the pack in reading them for dinner conversation, right?
There is ample parking, knowledgeable, friendly, and funny staff ... they can always tell you they're opinion on what you're planning to buy. They will even tell you when it's not really that good ... more interested in keeping their customers happy than just making another sale.
They also do something that I don't understand but that makes my husband pretty darn happy ... they don't immediately "bag it, board it, and raise the price" as soon as a new issue comes out.
So, ladies and gents, aficionados and newbies ... give this little gem a whirl next time you want to get your comic on!
Certainly one of the very best comic book shops in the city. If not THE best.
They have a terrific selection of trade paperbacks, and new monthly books. They have a decent, if not extensive selection of back issues. They offer a subscription service, in which they'll pull titles for you each week and hold them for you. Another plus is that this is a dedicated comic book store. This is NOT the place to go if you want toys, or cards, posters, t-shirts... That's a GOOD thing. :)
The staff is always very friendly and helpful. ...and get this...the place is CLEAN. Yeah. A comic book shop you don't feel as though you need a shower after leaving.
An earlier review is likely very correct when it comes to this post impacting one's dating life, but the truth is that I love Comics Ink. It doesn't hurt that it's on my way to work and that they'll pull comics for you if you're out of town. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and (mostly) good-natured-- don't be on Adam's bad side when you run in at 7:58 when they're about to close at 8 is all I'm saying. If they don't have what you're looking for there, they can likely get it or at least point you in the right direction.
It's small but extremely well-organized-- unlike most stores, you don't have to fight through a lot of clutter to find what you want. And the regulars are a devoted and surprisingly not-as-nerdy-as-you-might-fear lot. I've run into writers, producers and studio execs there; they get a lot of traffic from the nearby Fox and Sony lots. If you're a comic book fan and on the Westside, you deserve to go to Comics Ink.
Simply the best. Acknowledgeable staff. The books are always in the greatest condition. The only place to shop for comics in LA.
your neighborhood friendly comic book store...plus, right next door was the liquor store "SUPERBAD" filmed at.
The selection is great, especially when you think of how compact the space is, and once I figured out the layout of the store I was able to find everything that I wanted with ease. A lot of variety too, I saw a bunch of things that I will definitely be going back to get. Good stuff.
I've been going here for quite some time now, I discovered it one day after getting laid off from my job which was in the area. A little pick me up in the form of paper and ink always seems to do the trick.
This place is quite different from most of the comic book shops of my youth, which makes it pretty low in the area of geek factor. You won't find any long haired nerds in trench coats arguing over who would win in a fight Superman or Hulk, or who would you rather bang Storm or Phoenix. Its a pretty well organized shop with a great selection of new and older titles. Most of the clientele seem to be well into their 30s, so no annoying kids causing a raucous.
The owner is pretty helpful and usually is great to ask for recommendations if you are feeling a bit overwhelmed by the selections. The prices are pretty good here too, "Realistic" as the owner Steve likes to say. They're so good in fact I pretty much cleared this guy of his Uncanny X-men collection.
That job I used to have may be long gone, but this store has become a staple to which I can depend on when I need a bit of escapism.
I went here to buy card holders for my sports cards. They had them. They were pretty cheap. I would go back when I need more.
my local comic shop closed down in palm desert so i go to culver city ca for work and i look up this store went in yesterday just to look around they where super organized had lots of back issues and i found alot of missing issus ive been looking for .the prices on them where very reasonable and the comics where in great shape not beat up like alot of other comic shops ive been too. this place is my new haven i just love it
A pretty good comic-book store, I like their set up. They also have a pretty good selection.
Just visited this place for this first time and I have to say that I am a fan. Clean, well organized store that isn't bogged down in extraneous stuff. They carry a great selection of current comics, graphic novels, and books in addition to a nice selection of statues, etc. A very cool place to visit.
One of the best comic books stores around! The owner loves comics and knows his stuff. He hires friendly, knowledgeable staff and back in the day when Superman "died", I was even able to reserve ahead of time! That to me was awesome! They have awesome sales every now and again and they have a great selection of books but also figures! Check it out!
Hey, what a novel idea! A comic books store that's friendly! And clean! No Night of the Living Dead DVD playing on a ratty Sylvania behind the counter. No Big Gulp cups thrown in the corner. Just plain old fashioned comics and books, all within reach. This place isn't big, you'll miss it if you're blazing down Overland Ave. but slow down. It's in a strip mall at the corner of Braddock and Overland. Give the little guy a chance. You'll be glad you did. And you won't have to wash your hands when you get home.
went there looking for help on some comics for a movie i was working on-when i asked for help the guy was not only rude to me--but also to my two kids--for such a small store ,they should not be so rude-even to kids--
