I think this place is fantastic. I have been here many time now, and have seen it grow from a very small venue, to a large one, and still sell out. The crowds are still intimate though, and this makes this my favourite comedy venue in the city. Even on "expensive" nights, tickets are $12 and so you really can't lose.

Until a while ago, they had a BYOB policy. But this has now stopped... But they are working on a liquor license. But you know what, you don't have to be drunk in order to think that the comedy here is funny.

With the way alot of us live our lives...skool, work, study, workout, eat, yelp, shit, sleep and wake up and start tat damn cycle all over again!! WTF rite? guess tats wat life is suppose to be like.  What we need to get get thru everything is good food, good people but more importantly some good LAUGHS!! After laughing so hard that i wanted fall out of my seat, it made me feel alot better!! I came Sat nite for The OCD and ADD Comedy show to support my buddy EDWIN LI, do his stuff on stage. This was my first time watching him do stand up, and he F@#Ken rocked! His jokes were funny and i could relate to some of them too, since his jokes are based alot on his life experiences!

Parking was horrible tat nite only because the Chinese New Year Parade was going on and of course alot of people were out since it was a Sat nite. The room we were in was a lot smaller than i had picture but it made it more of an intimate experience. What helped was there a crazy interracial couple that was funnier than some of the other comics performing. Since Alcohol was banned, they got smashed before coming to the show and made it even funner for us to watch. lols

This was my first time in a comedy club event, I knew i would enjoy it and can't wait to hit up more Comedy clubs.

Here, tonight, I learned to laugh again.

A friend invited us to watch her compete in a comedy competition in the Clubhouse.  Nine competitors, one professional MC, and a famous comedian were in the lineup.  Everyone in the room was here to laugh, and the comics delivered.

And our friend won the competition!

For $12 you can't go wrong. It wasn't the funniest comedy show I have been to, but I did burst out in to laughter several times. It's a smaller club, so audience participation and banter with the comedian should be expected.

The best part was the BYOB, although here are a few pointers.

    1. They only have small plastic cups, no glasses, or even wine glasses. You might want to stick to beer in a bottle if you are a wine glass snob like myself.

    2. No ice! You better buy something cold otherwise you will suffer.

    3. No mixers, which means you have to bring soda if you are making a cocktail. But, they do have a soda machine, in case you don't come prepared.

    4. Buy your liquor somewhere FAR from Nob Hill, the mark-up at the nearby liquor stores in insane. $30 for a cheap bottle of wine, $50 for decent vodka, and $4 for a red bull. Yikes.

As a single and extremely unathletic person, I found myself with too much free time and in dire need of a hobby. Clearly, I could not rock climb, play kickball, or bike like all the other fit and coordinated girls that occupy this city, so I had to find something remotely suitable to my skill set.

Cooking? Nah. That would make me fat.

Pole dancing classes? Nah. No one to perform for.

    Stand-up comedy? What?! Me?! Hmmm...

I audited one of the beginner stand-up classes and was hooked instantly. I threw down cash for the 5-week beginner stand-up classes and had THE BEST TIME EVER!!

We spent the first few weeks learning all the technical stuff, like joke structure and how to come up with ideas for jokes. In the later weeks, we practiced stuff like how to riff (mess with the audience) and perform jokes on stage.

You'll definitely find yourself in a class full of funny and super-nice people. The teacher is a stand-up comedian, so of course he's hilarious. All of this really makes class a total BLAST!!

One of the best things about being a student here is you can sign up for as many Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday night open mics as you want, so you can get tons of practice in front of small audiences if you want.

I did an open mic at the end of my 5-week class on a Thursday and invited all of my friends. It was SO FUN! All my friends got hammered (why else would I be friends with them?) and laughed their asses off at all the amazing comics. Seriously, for $5, you're getting a DAMN FUNNY SHOW.

I'm definitely going to sign up for the advanced performance stand-up classes once my schedule frees up in the spring.

Going to school here was one of the most fun and challenging things I've ever done. If you've ever fantasized about getting on stage and nurturing your delusions of your own hilarity, get your ass to this school and sign up for classes! You'll LOVE IT!!

Last night I experienced Comedy ClubHouse -- and it was great!
Funny, honest and simply amusing evening.

    1. BYOB.
They have plastic cups, and wine bottle openers, and ice.

    2. Deal on tickets
    (I got mine at http://www.brownpapert...)

After it finished, we stepped out of the building and Ruby Sky was right there -- I felt sorry for ppl, waiting in line, (some girls almost naked) paying $20 in cover + X amount for drinks so later they can pretend that it was fun :(

There are still a lot of bars nearby where you can get a cheap drink before and after, but this still makes me really sad. Stupid liquor license rules.

I found the Comedy College on yelp-thanks!  I agree with the other reviews that it's great to have a cheap comedy venue where you can bring your own booze.  BUT.  Last night had some problems.

    1)  It was very hot and stuffy, and they kept adding more chairs as more people arrived so it was downright claustrophobic by the time the show started.

    2)  The host wasn't funny--just loud.  And I was uncomfortable when she (the host) insulted the only really old person in the crowd (she said that "the woman wearing a shift in the front row must know all about weight watchers"), which almost made the shift-wearer cry.  Really--pick on one of the young hipsters in the audience who can take it!

    3) Only 1 of the 4 comedians was laugh out loud funny.  He had great spiels about Oregon (the juxtaposition of white rednecks and white liberals) and about being middle class in SF.

    4) There was a mix-up with the lineup and the headliner (Tapan Trivedi?) didn't show.

On the plus side, the greeter at the front was very friendly and the crowd was nice too.

I love stand-up comedy. I don't get a chance too often to GO to a show, but I mean, that's what I have Comedy Central for, yo. It cures all.

So I got a chance to go to this one last night, and dragged a couple of my friends along with me. They were a little reluctant, especially at the fact that it was a 'comedy college' and swore to kill me if they didn't laugh.

    (Whatevs.)

I'm not being biased whatsoever, but this was probably one of the greatest times I've had at any comedy club. Everyone was hilarious; it got to a point where my ears were hot and my face started to hurt from all the laughing I was doing. Ali Mafi was headlining the show that night and once he came on - forget it, I lost it. I was laughing so hard, my bladder started to cry in pain. My friends were laughing hysterically next to me, and I was collapsing in a fit - torn between pain and laughter.

    It was AWFUL.

But it felt so good. I was bummed when it was over.

My friends loved it -- we talked about it nonstop from the second we left to the time it took for us to separate. So yeah - it was amazing. This show was awesome and I'd probably seize the chance to go to each show they do, but um -- my bladder took a beating last night and really, if I have to start wearing Depends to this place everytime, my life will be over.

    UPDATE: 4/22/08

Okay, I can't express how awesome this place is.  You guys must give it a try, if you haven't.  My second time around and I just discovered a comedian who has made it to my list of favorite stand ups: Joe Klocek.  This guy is brilliant.  He needs no material on stage, simply feeds off the energy of the audience, and is hilarious.  My cheeks were literally in pain from laughing too much on Friday night.

    -------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------

This such an awesome Yelp find!  This place is great for locals, out-of-towners, and just about anyone who wants to have a couple hours of good laughs for only $10-12.  No $20+ admission or 2-drink minimum here.  You gotta love the BYOB!  They are even well-equipped with bottle openers, corkscrews, and plastic cups to accommodate your alcoholic thirst.  They have complimentary snacks at the front door too!  For about 2 straight hours, you are entertained by 7-8 comics.  They'll humiliate themselves, their loved ones, and of course, lucky members the audience.  Be sure to snag a seat in the back if you're afraid of being victimized.  The room seats about 60 people, and can get pretty stuffy during the show.  Saturday night shows are called Naked Comedy and feature newbies and experienced comedians alike.  My favorite comedian by far is Ali Mafi...I think he performs every weekend at SFCC.

I have absolutely no complaints about this place at all and will be recommending it to everyone I know.  The headlining comedian made a joke that  he really wanted a glass of 7&7 that someone in the audience was drinking but that if he took the drink, he would not get his $50 for the night.  When you think about it, let's say it was at maximum turnout for $12/person x 60 seats (=$720), $50 for the headliner and probably a smaller denomination for the newbies is such a meager salary for a starving artist.  So, come to SFCC to support up and coming artists and if you're looking for a really good time!

Even though the show was pretty much sold out, they were nice enough to squeeze a couple more chairs in for us. I didn't even think to buy pre-sale tickets. Thank you!

The show was $10 and BYOB. We ended up right in front and were a little worried that we'd be picked on, but there were two other birthday parties there to distract the comedians. Note: if you say its your birthday, you will be brought attention to.

I cant even decide who was my favorite. There were about 6 comedians and they all pretty much made my cheeks hurt and turned my face bright red...or was that the stiff vodka ginger ales I kept pouring myself?

Either way it was a great time and well worth it. I recommend it to visitors and locals.

BYOB -- yeah you know me! The SFCCC is one of the coolest spots around. For a comedy club to NOT have a two drink minimum and have BYOB, you can't ask for anything else. I've been to the Punchline. It's good, but two drink minimums and cover charges deter me in this money-saving economy. At SFCCC, you can bring a bottle of wine, a 6-pack, a 30-pack. The sky is the limit!

Even though it's called the SF Comedy College, on Saturday nights, it's nothing like a college. You got top-notch professional talent who just love being on stage and sharing their jokes with you. They bring a lot of local talent, so if you're not from the Bay, you'll be in for some fresh talent. Sit in the front and you can be on the chopping block too.

We went to a Naked! show a few Saturdays ago and EVERYONE, from the openers to the headliner were amazing. It's a pretty intimate venue and gets packed.

I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a cheap alternative to an expensive city. It's a diamond in the rough and you'll enjoy yourself immensely.

Ummm...Not funny. Maybe because I was already watching previews of Comedy Central's Pablo Francisco before hand, and although it's a place where you can bring your own alcohol....NO amount of alcohol could make me laugh.  I was seated next to the video recording of the show, and I think my jokes were a lot funnier than theirs.  I even looked to my left and to my right seats and the people there were all passed out snoring! I actually wouldn't have minded a few racist jokes here and there to break up the monotony of their political satire...

Be mindful that these comedians are STUDENTS to a mediocre, cynical comedian.  So, I guess you should cut them some slack.  A little advice...Don't go here for a bachelor/bachelorette party.  Why a comedy school?  You can't be THAT cheap! Go duck hunting or something.  At least that's SO much more entertaining.

Oh, and P.S. Ken Thompson...Even MovieFone is funnier than you and a magic eightball is definitely way more entertaining. So, stop being such a sore ass, just because I didn't like the show.  It's sad that you had to open up a YELP account just to retort back to my comments.  Don't worry though, to the future comedians of that school...I'll never step foot in that place again anyway....

"So .... if you haven't noticed already" .. sucks in gut ... "I'm FAT, ARABIC, and GAY" ....... "So ... I'm pretty much America's worst nightmare" - said by one of the many funny comedians at this joint.

This was the "New York NIghts" special 10pm Friday at the 414 Mason St. #705 spot, literally upstairs from Ruby Skye. Highly highly recommended! Best entertainment you can get for only FIVE freakin dollars!

    UPDATE: 1/10/09
Last night I brought another entourage to the Saturday night show. And by entourage I mean my only friend and their friend... but that's besides the point. We stepped in 40 minutes late and Melissa G kindly compted my ticket based on a past yelp review.

The comedians were 9/10 with one of them being a little stale, but there is no $12 better well spent. Laughing is good for you, you can loose weight and it's not the stupid ass temporary laugh you get at a modern "comedy" movie where you laugh at the same damn thing you laughed at in the previews. We came late and got lucky to sit in the front row and I about spit my beer(BYOB is awesome) onto the stage when the comedian started bustin jokes on my friend from Porto, with questions like "What are you wearing? A turtle neck sweater Mr. Idon'tknowwhetheritsgoingtobehotorcoldbecauseweare insanfrancisco man"

Go, or loose $12 at the movies seing another mediocre comedy movie staring seth rogan, will ferral, vince vaugn, or owen wilson, etc

What do you get when you mix a bunch of strangers who bring in their own beers and wine by the box, the occasional heckler who'll call out but quickly be put back into his place by the comic on-stage, the smell of fear from the audience as the comic scours the room in hopes of finding the next contestant of "Please Make a Fool Out of Me" (obnoxious sorority types are easy targets), comedians from diverse backgrounds that are sometimes hit-or-miss but share a passion for comedy?  They call it Saturday night here.

I find that stand-up comedy speaks to me, not in a condescending talk-show host type of way, but it's a great way to relieve stress and I get a kick out of the spontaneous interaction between comic and audience--this venue is particularly intimate. The "oh-my-God-I-know-someone-like-that" moments, and the "oh-wow, I-can't-believe-she-just-said-that" moments and all the less-than-stellar material in between, I enjoy them all.

Just in case, reserve your tickets online the day of the show to ensure you get a seat!

Good place to go and have some fun for cheap.

The place was small and intimate which was nice and in general all the comedians were pretty funny. It's BYOB (in case you haven't ready any of the other reviews) which I thought was nice b/c I know other places have a two drink minimum. The only problem is that people will get pretty drunk and start acting like idiots and start to take away from the acts.

The only thing good about standing near Ruby Skyee.

So this place is a little hard to find, but well worth the search (i.e. B D). I've been over a dozen times and laugh my ass off to almost all the comedians. Best two to check out? Laura Gallegos and Ali Mafi: best gay jokes ever and always keep me entertained with the great new material. Remember that this is a "college", so you might come across some comics that aren't too funny...but they all have to learn somewhere, right?

Best part, you can bring your own booze. Second best part, very cheap price of admission and if you buy the tickets online (http://www.brownpaperb...) you can donate some of the money to a charity of your choice.

So, all around great time. Whenever you are looking for something to do before going out on a Saturday night, this is your place...

Its a super affordable night out, BYOB in a smaller, more intimate venue than the other commercial comedy clubs in town.

Sure, the comedy can be a little hit-and-miss with the mix of pros and students. Its like going to open mic nights, picking out the comics who are not too TV/ club polished.

The comics on the night we went were super intelligent - not the Comedy Central slapstick comedy, but hella darker, funnier. More subtle.

My kinda stand-up. Will absolutely be back.

What a fun way to spend an evening! BYOB and standup are nothing short of a brilliant combination. Nothing turns me off of standup more than having to pay a big cover and then buy overpriced drinks from waiters that are blocking my view of the comedy during the show...
This place has neither of these things. Dirt cheap ($5, $10, depending on the night) and BYOB. There's certainly a range of talent, since it is after all an amateur establishment, but on the evening that I went nobody truly bombed and some of the performers were really very talented. Highly recommended for a night of inexpensive fun!

This has quickly become one of my favorite things to do in the city.  I've been to about seven shows so far and have never been let down.  The majority of the comedians are as good as, or better than, what you'd get at any other comedy club.

$12 tickets combined with the BYOB policy is unbeatable.  The show usually gets out around 11pm, so you still have plenty of time to go out afterward.

    Count me in.

The Clubhouse is really what comedy shows should be.  Like others said, they don't depend on bar sales to make money, so there is not a push for the comics to do material "for the masses".  What a great experience.  I recommend this place to anyone and everyone who likes to laugh.  If you don't like to laugh - go see "Wild Hogs".

How do you spell awesome? B-Y-O-B.

The rumors are true. This place actually lets you bring in your own drinks, which means cheapskates like me can buy a bottle of Carlo Rossi for like $7, pay $10-12 at the door (depending on the night), and have an amazingly good time laughing at inappropriate jokes for under $20. In San Francisco, that's practially impossible.

The added bonus? The comedians are actually FUNNY. I don't know who the people are giving this place bad reviews, but apparently they have sticks up their bums. I was laughing to the point of tears in some cases, and was otherwise extremely entertained. Maybe I just went on a good night? Maybe I have a horrendous sense of humor? I don't know, but I definitely enjoyed myself.

FYI: There is a liquor store across the street, but it's HELLA expensive. I spent $15 on five tall cans (yes, I know, I'm a classy lady). Best to stop at a cheaper corner store before you go. Otherwise, your $20 night becomes $30 (which is still not bad).

Oh, and I highly recommend this place for a first date. If you both laugh at the same jokes, you know s/he's a keeper.

I love, love, love this place.  It makes me want to quit my day job and get up on stage.  Since the majority of the contenders are students - some are funny as "hello".  Others bomb - which is just as fun (and gets WAY more laughs).

It's cheap, you can bring your own food and drink, and they are always so nice.  I've been 5 or 6 times, random Friday nights, special occasions, and even for my honeymoon (false).

Needless to say there was some loud, wasted people in the audience and the comics were great about it. I'll definitely be back soon and am spreading the word.

Great place to catch a cheap comedy show!

BYOB, buy tix beforehand (it was sold out the evening I went) and sit back and let tomorow's comic superstars entertain you. I hit this on Saturday night and very much enjoyed most of the acts - Dhaya L especially had me in tears!

    Fabulous!

Went during the week, $5, steal! Then again on Saturday, $15. Of course BYOB is awesome and makes the comedy even more hilarious.

We got there 30 mins early on a Saturday which was a good move because it soon filled up and sold out. Our lineup was very funny minus 2 people that just didn't jive. I definitely think it's a hit or miss kind of event but it's worth visiting and supporting local comedians.

It seemed like mostly a younger crowd, mid 20s-early 30s but the comedians ranged in age so that was nice. Overall, a well spent Saturday night with the girls!

The shows here are hilarious- you want to see the same comics you'd have to buy expensive drinks at at clubs in a smaller, more intimate setting where you can sit and chug a box of wine while watching? Come to the SFCC Clubhouse.

The Saturday shows are always packed, and in the end a lot of people get turned away, so make plans to go see the Friday night showcase at 9:00. It's cheap, it's BYOB, the comedians are hilarious.

    Go on a Friday!

First off this review is for The Clubhouse. I will be taking the beginner stand up comedy class at SFCC in Aug/Sept and I will write a review for the Comedy College as a update.

I been to The Clubhouse twice now. Its a small venue. A little hard to find. Its located on the 5th floor. The stairs were a little confusing but we managed to get to the show. The comedians were great. Up and coming local San Francisco comedians. Some jokes were funny, some were bland. Totally worth the price though. Paid $3.50 per ticket to get in. Their is NO ALCOHOL served there. So if you want to drink, go find a bar. Theirs lots of bars around the area so its not that hard. ha Overall its a good place and I look forward to coming back to seeing more cheap shows and attending SFCC!

The comedy troupes that perform here are no longer free, but they are really inexpensive ($7) and hilariously funny.  These comics are opening and featuring for major headliners and using the SFCC Clubhouse as their home base.
    Check it out!

I went with a group of friends to The Clubhouse last night for the first time and was blown away by the big talent this hole in the wall had to offer.  I literally laughed my ass off the entire time. The venue is small and intimate, which I really liked because there wasn't a bad seat in the house. They actually had to bring in extra chairs for folks because it had sold out and they were willing to squeeze em in.  You provide your own booze, and they provide popcorn, brownies and the best entertainment that $10 can buy. The staff was friendly and the comics were a potpourri of talent/experience levels and were able to touch a wide spectrum of topics (not the Carlos Mencia type who runs the same tired gamete into the ground).

If you love to love to laugh, or even if comedy clubs aren't your thing, I would highly recommend checking this place out.

I went today (Saturday) and I was quite dissapointed with the line-up. I went with a GF of mine who had gone to the SF Comedy College & Clubhouse years ago. Coincidentally she said it was the same headliner who was very Seinfield-esque...not really my type of humor. Overall, the line-up wasnt as great as the 1st time I went, which happened to be a Friday night.

That said, I really feel like its a hit or miss. Joe Klocek was the headliner on the Friday night that I went and he was so hilarious! Awesome local humor and he handled the hecklers WELL that  night. Anyone that can handle hecklers on the fly really impress me. It shows that they are true comedians. Friday night = 4.5 stars.

The audience is always great -- probably consistently the nicest bunch over any of the comedy clubs I've been to in other major cities. Probably due to the fact that this attracts friendly tourists and SF locals in general are pretty nice.

    Worth a visit still! BYOB!

For the price you pay, the comics are freaking awesome and funny. I love this place. You get to see quite a few comics in one evening. You get to see different presentation styles and material which is very kewl and enjoyable.

I will have to go back to this place and check out some other line ups.

    BYOB-BYOB!!!!
ok so you can see where my priorities lie.
    so what
    don't judge me

Wicked funny, 'intimate' setting.  i saw some of the same comedians at punchline but this was just a good minus the 2 drink minimum and snippy wait staff.  so it was better!!

staff here was very nice, cookies and popcorn were offered, they even had corkscrews for your byow. i'll be back.

Here is what you need to know about this cool little comedy Shak...It's small which is coo because if you have bad hearing....you won't miss a good joke. There is no 2 drink minimum which is sweet because you wont be feeling broke after you leave this joint. You can bring your own booze which is awsome...stop by a local LQ store grab a 40 and your good to go. For the most part all the comics I saw were above average...and aren't afraid to pick you out of the group.
Speaking of that...if you do not wish to be picked on...DO NOT SIT IN THE FRONT ROW...the comics are know for picking on the front raw folks and giving them some some harmless shit. I know because I got  to experience it first hand.
Over all it is a great place and it's cheap for people like me.
And if you r in a dancing mood after there are is Ruby SKY and Slides directly next door to the Comedy Club.

It's $5 for the amateur show, and you can bring in your own drinks as long as you look 21.  I guess if you don't look 21 they check your ID.

Anyway, based on the reviews, we thought it would be packed, but in the whole room there were maybe 15 of us, and of that, 7 was our little group.

The comics were sincere in their efforts, though you could tell they were nervous.  Some had note cards with them which I don't know if that is ok or not in regular professional comedy shows.

They weren't the funniest group of comics that I've ever seen, but it was a good way to spend the evening with friends for something different.

I think next time we'll try the more professional show, our group unanimously agreed on that.  But good idea for a different type of evening if you are not wanting to go to the bar scene.

I have been here a couple times now and am loving.  Unlike a lot of people that seem to be reviewing, I am actually taking part in the college portion as well as attending as a spectator.  A lot of the comedians here are indeed new and some of them, like myself, go onstage for the first time here.  The staff and comics are uber friendly and hang out and chat before and after the shows and the prices can't be beat.  Definitely check it out if you are in the mood for some comedy.

In response to Cynthia B's comments.... they were sold out last night but had one of the comics invited a bunch of friends who did not all prebuy tickets.  They tried to accommodate the people as best they could, thus the cramped atmosphere.
