What an incredible place! Worth every minute of a rainy drive to Astoria just to get to see this amazing museum! Filled with maritime artifacts & history, this museum truly gave me pause for thought regarding the dangers sailors & fishermen place themselves in, even today with all the modern technology at their disposal. I had no idea how trecherous the mouth of the Columbia River was, nor did I realize how many ships had been sunk & lives lost in the waters right here. There's a reason for one spot being called Cape Disappointment!
For an entry fee of $10.00 for adults, and half that for children under 17, you get so much bang for your buck! A must if you find yourself in Astoria. Make sure & spend some time on the Light Boat as well...see how you might feel when considering the job of being 5 miles out to sea for a month like these guys did...consider spending some time reading all the information about the immigrants who worked in the fish canneries here. It is awe-inspiring to think about how hard these people worked, and in terrible conditions. Make sure you leave yourself ample time to listen to FDR's broadcast of the bombing of Pearl Harbor on the vintage radio - it is incredibly moving.
This was a highlight, to be sure. I will come back again and bring out-of-towners. This is a place that may not look terribly exciting from the exterior, but just continues to unfold story & saga after saga. Make this a place to see if you are on the North OR coast!

It will cost you $10 to enter the Maritime Museum. I don't really think it's worth $10, maybe $5. It's a good size museum and pretty neat to see. I could see it being a lot more fun if you were into boating, fishing or even shipping. I didn't get to see the film... just kind of ran out of time. The best part is walking around the boat outside.

Pretty cool place. Had blast. Pretty fun for a Museum. Your kinda overwhelmed by all the destruction the Columbia River mouth has done to ships. Cool displays of old ships. Looks a lot smaller then what it is. Well worth the price of admission. I's like to go back and do it all over again.
Excellent museum! I have no particular interest in maritime stuff but this museum was laid out well and the exhibits were informative and well designed. There was a film about the dangerous waters of the Columbia River and Pacific Ocean -- where they meet is apparently one of the most dangerous places to sail a ship and that's sort of the focus of the museum. You can also go outside and tour a boat that served as lighthouse on the water. We stopped on our way to Cannon Beach from Seattle and it was a great stopping point and place to spend a Friday afternoon.
Great museum! Love the map of the coast line with all the ship wrecks listed for you treasure hunters. Also enjoyed the rescue exhibit for the Life Guard. Also such a cute little gift shop! Loved some of the fun local products I picked up there. And great for those interested in fishing. Also admission includes a tour of the ship Columbia docked right outside. Paintings, maritime items, models and so much more. Be sure to check it out if you are in the area.
This is a phenomenal museum. Leave yourself 3 hours, minimum. The ticket is good all day, so you can do some in the AM, and finsih up after lunch if needed. Watch the video, right as you enter, it will stop you in your tracks it si so amazing. I live in Astoria, and visit this museum at least once a year. You'll love it!
