3 reviews for Colorado History Museum
A free night thanks to the city of Denver's Art's Week celebration, so I made my first trip to this museum. Maybe I am more of a history buff than I care to believe or even than I care to let on, but the CHM is a nice museum. Or maybe I am getting to that age where I am appreciating things that I once couldn't as a child. Now that's scary.
I admit I did get lost a time or two in the Native American exhibit, but I wasnt the only one. It is an awesome exhibit and shouldn't be missed. The Colorado historical timeline is probably my favorite part of the museum along with the exhibit on the 10th Mountain Division. The museum sit conveniently across the street from the Denver Art Museum, so if you've had enough with history, you can emulse yourself in some art instead.
I love Colorado. I was born here......
.....OK, OK, I'm ready for everyone to jump down my throat for saying so. (http://www.yelp.com/to...) So here's the disclaimer: It just so happens I was born in Leadville. I have NOTHING against people who weren't born here. Even if you weren't born here you can still love Colorado. That's fine with me. If you are *still* rankled, you can kiss my high-altitude behind. SO, as I was saying...
I love Colorado. I was born here. I love history. So I really would like to bestow five stars upon the museum dedicated to Colorado History.
Here you will find a lot of information focused primarily on Colorado's early days: including exhibits about Native Americans, a diorama of Denver in the 1860s (presumably pre-1864, the year of the Great Flood), and mining equipment from the 1858 discovery of gold in the Cherry Creek up until WWII.
Unfortunately, what you won't find is any sort of discernible flow. I found myself walking leisurely through an exhibit, which would then dead-end, and I'd have to back track to find the other exhibits, which sometimes branch off in the middle of another. The Native American exhibits, Ancient Voices: Stories of Colorado's Distant Past and Tribal Paths: Colorado's American Indians,1500 to Today are somewhat confusing in their layout. At one junction I thought I was about to see Mesa Verde items but instead saw an Apishapa display first. Other items seem randomly placed, like a Conestoga wagon rather in the middle of nowhere.
Still, for $7.00 you'll find something to hold your interest. Just have patience and try to keep your dates straight, especially when the layout makes that difficult.
I agree with the other reviewer, that the place could use a better sense of flow/organization. That said, it was a nice place to spend the afternoon (it is a small museum, easy to do in a part of a day). My favorite exhibits were those of the Native Americans, a subject which is one of my favorites. I got chills looking at some of it. I enjoyed watching a mini-movie on the Bear Dance, a cultural tradition.
