Neighborhoods: Southwest, Lincoln ParkWhen people ask me whether I'm a Democrat or Republican I get sort of annoyed: it's a false dichotomy, as if the wide-range of political and economic positions one could take can be reduced to just these two political parties - who are themselves fragmented.
But alas for us, we live in a two-party state, due mainly in part to the way our voting system is set up: you are not only wasting your vote if you vote for a third-party, but in fact you are actually helping the opposite major party by not voting for the major party that is closer aligned with your beliefs.
What this means is that all you chumps that voted for Nader (I like Nader, he's just a spoiler who is partly to blame for what happened) in 2000 gave the election to Bush (well, if you overlook the fact that Gore won after all was said and done anyway). If you voted for Gore, a candidate you would have much rather preferred over the fuck-up that is George W Bush, then Gore would probably still be in office now, we wouldn't be in the quagmire that is Iraq, and maybe the budget wouldn't be about to burst from over-spending and lower taxes for the wealthy.
Thus, even though I don't consider myself a democrat, I still realize that due to the system we unfortunately inherited, I should vote for a Dem unless I want a member of the Hypocrisy Party (fam. values = child abuse and war?) voted in again to fuck over the country.
But I digress.
Anyway, what is particularly cool about the Colorado Democratic party is the power of their grassroots organizers and campaigners. I've known many of them personally, and they are very dedicated and selfless to the cause. I remember one case where a friend received a death-threat from one of those family values Republicans when he came up to tell him about such and such an issue. I also watched as they campaigned while an utter downpour was going in Denver as I sipped my coffee from inside.
That said, what isn't so cool about the Colorado Democrats is that they think the way to win is through taking up more and more of the center. (Look, just because you are 'centrist' or 'moderate' doesn't mean you avoid the polemics of either party...you instead have some of your own.) Thus, even though we elected a Dem to be our governor, I'm not overly impressed: pro-lifer with 11 children? Well, guess any idea of population control or sustainability is now out of the question.
And yet...I would still prefer to have Ritter over Beauprez, which is why I voted for him.
We'll see...thankfully it looks like Bush has ruined the Republican party for at least 8 years and hopefully more, so we could finally have our first black or first women president. Score.
But keep it up you stoic campaigners, I respect you even though I think better political parties exist.

You might be good at keeping us in Iraq, you might be good at propaganda, but when it comes to being stylish you might as well step back step step step back!
* Star one for the first chant... I love the Big D part
** Star three is awarded to chant five, for the enthusiastic ending
*** Star three is handed out to chant six for making me actually do the dance when I wrote it down
**** How do you star four is handed out to chant four for making me spell out democrats out loud
***** The final and most special star goes to the last chant, because you have to admit, it is just that funny

I'm going to let you guys in on a not-so-well-kept secret, here. Congressman Ed Perlmutter is the most accessible man in Congress. Seriously. An average citizen, just by being friendly and having a flexible schedule and a few things to get off their chest, can easily get a meeting with Ed. Got an issue with a bill coming up, and want to try telling a Congressman your side of things? No problem. Call his people, be nice, be to the point, and you'll get that meeting.
But please don't try to ask him to change things on the county/state level- down to earth as he is, I'm sure he gets a little sick of being asked why he can't make sure such and such county bill doesn't get passed. He's a UNITED STATES Congressman, that's why. But he'd never be so blunt- he's a really, really nice guy.
And that brings me to the Democratic Party overall, at least here in Colorado. Accessibility seems to be a mainstay of their campaign strategy. It's easy to get involved and make a difference in politics in our state. Sure, the Democratic party line has its problems, but it's easy-peasy to get ahold of your representative to share your side of things, and if you know how to go about it, an average citizen can easily testify before a committee at the state Capitol.
Five stars for not being a bunch of guys in suits on the TV news, and for actually being mainly very decent human beings in person.
