Denver has some pretty cool public buildings. But what makes the convention center special is the big blue bear.
I miss him. :'(
The SIAM Annual Meeting was diverted here at the last minute due to unscheduled construction at the Sheraton hotel several blocks away. The good news was that they were easily able to accommodate our meeting providing us with all of the necessary amenities to boot; the bad news is that this place was adequately functional but not anywhere you really wanted to spend any serious amount of time -- even if you love math a lot.
Because our meeting only had about 1000 people, it was swallowed up by the massive space available at this convention center. I don't think we really put a dent into it. Food offering was minimal and overpriced. A small sports drink was either $3 or $4 for example. The wi-fi for the conference only extended to the immediate area of the conference. If you sat at the tables on the other side of the meeting rooms, you were no longer in range of the free wi-fi and would need to pay for the other wi-fi network that was available. That just seemed strange -- it should have been available anywhere in the building. Also the place could benefit from more public seating and electrical outlets. With all of the breaks, we ended up spending a fair amount of time outside of the meeting rooms using our laptops and networking.
Overall, the place will certainly meet your needs, but the place is cold, cavernous, and comatose.
I love you for housing the Great American Beer Fest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This place is so spacious - if I were throwing a convention, I would definetly have it here. There were two conventions going on simultaneously when I was there. I know car shows bring in tons of people and I was there for a Home Builders convention - the two groups didn't even cross paths. I had no trouble finding my group. I never saw the auto people and my biggest fear, of getting lost and confused in a place so sizable were immediately dispelled.
Lots of parking, in lots, garages and on the street.
Great environment, right downtown - I think it gives any visiting tourist a great view of the Denver downtown area, restaurants and nightlife. Matter of fact when I came out of my seminar there was a friendly note on my car from La Boheme offering me free admission to their show. Apparently with your convention pass - La Boheme is free. What a great way to welcome our visiting businessmen!
What can you really say about a convention center? Yea this one is huge. I mean HUGE. There's a gigantic blue bear out front peeking in through the windows to see what's going on inside. I am very surpised some wannabee gangsta hasnt tried to throw up a random graffiti tag on it somewhere. West...side!
In all seriousness, this is certainly a greater addition to the city of Denver since it's completed expansion almost 2 years ago. I've been here twice, yesterday for the Denver Intl Auto Show and another time for a graduation ceremony.
I purposely stayed away from any concessions yesterday, cause it doesnt matter what the event is, in any convention center in the world, the food is always overpriced and probably not very good unless you've been stranded on an island somewhere due to a plane crash, that the FAA for some reason couldn't keep track of. (In case you couldn't tell, I'm not a fan of LOST).
So enjoy the convention center, the people watching and all that downtown has to offer.
Cool Building, horribly designed. The Colorado Convention Center looks awesome and glorious from the outside, with the windows and big bear sculpture trying to pear through the window on 14th street, but the design is not user friendly or environmentally conscious.
the building's massive windows face the west, for the view of the mountains of course, and here is the most perfect part of the building to utilize the Colorado southern exposure sun, and they opted out.
For exhibitors, unloading and getting your booth and poster materials to the upstairs large exhibitor's room is a pain and inconvenient if you don't know your way around the Center. The inside of the exhibitor's hall barley has any natural light... The tall ceilings could have incorporated some skylights... I think this would not only be beneficial for the building, but for exhibitors as well.
Oh yeah, and the food/lunch room is horrible ...
* Star one is for making me feel like a grumpy fool with such negative things to say... I never write this way... I think I am going to throw up
** Star two is for at least designing a "community center" for people to gather
I come here for the Great American Beer Festival. I love this place, but it's kind of bare inside. Speaking of bare, I remember a big ass blue Bear, but I don't know where he is anymore. It must have been on the other side of the building.
The Colorado Convention Center is an impressive building...it is huge, architecturally interesting, and a great venue....so much so that this will be the location for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
This building is so big that it spans several blocks, and thus has a street, light rail, and bus lines running under it. A cool drive.
There is even a huge blue bear sculpture looking in, which is also pretty cool.
Yup, pretty cool.
A very cool looking building but not enough public seating. Hello? Can we have a few benches or tables to eat or lunches at? Must we be degraded to eating on the floor in the hallway? And the concessions....don't get me started. It's cheaper to eat at Yankee Stadium.
