I received a cryptic call a few weeks ago.  "We have your pot.  Pick it up next week."  click.

ORLY?

Recreational activities during company time is a no no but to the rescue!  A good friend had an order of her own and assured me it was "no trouble, really."  Right....et tu Brute?  But later that evening I arrived home to her message:  "I got it.  It looks GOOOOD."

Neat!

Color Me Mine, located in Tribeca, specializes in all kinds of pot.  Cheap pot.  Large pot.  Hand fired pot.  And when I say "specialize,"
I'm talking fully stocked, dizzying rows upon rows of glistening fresh product priced at fairly reasonable prices.

As a newbie, I wondered if my lack of experience would be embarassing and apparent.  I've never ever done this before!  Thankfully CMM had two awesome experts at hand who patiently explained step by step the correct handling techniques and proper drying times.  Lulled by the ambient tunes from their in-house DJ, by the time I hit my 2nd glass of (free) wine, my pot (soooo smooth with a velvety after touch) was finished in no time and I left feeling energized with just a teeny touch of vertigo.  Wine makes me woozy.

Quite easily the best pot* party on a weekday.  So fun it should be illegal!

*Okay, so it was more like a bowl.  My hand painted one of a kind bowl is glorious and shiny and resting counterside next to my flower pot in my office.  I love my bowl.  Bowl bowl.  Bowl.  Bowl.  Mole.  Bowl.  :::halp me::::

other:
- painting pottery = good times
- and theraputic
- stimulated my dead creative neurons
- most pottery ranged from $17-$50+
- my glazed bowl really is beautiful and i got a ton of compliments
- so go!  because who doesn't need a shiny new bust of elvis?  (which they really have)

Customize & personalize.

If you enjoy exercising your creative genes, you'll love this place! Not only, do they have a heaping variety of ceramic pieces for you to choose from, but the wide varieties of pieces are functional.

Places that give me options allow me to customize, and they allow me to personalize the product to my tailored desire. When you walk in here, you're not buying an 'Off-the-Rack' ceramic piece; you're 'Making it your way.' This is a great place to create a gift for someone special.

As you finish your piece, you'll wonder why your piece looks soo bland.. Fret not worrywart. The burning process brings out the colors in the piece (and yes, it burns off the pencil markings).

The employees there are very helpful, so feel free to ask plenty of questions.

If you're the meticulous type, give yourself ample time. It takes some time for the coats to dry.

I went for the Yelp Color Me Mine event today -

-finally met Jane K. and Peter D.
-ran into Chris K. and friend and Sergio R. and Nina C.- heloooo!
-painted what I think is a cool cheese plate (pictures to follow soon)
-tasted some interesting dry rose wine, poured from a tetrapak. How weird - and cool - is that!
-collected my Yelp T-shirt. I'm wearing it RIGHT NOW! I love it!

Thanks so much Jane K. and Peter D. and everyone for organizing this. SOOO much fun.

Great activity for Tweens. I tool two girls I nanny for and they loved it. They do a great job accomodating and help with suggestions to make sure your piece turns out perfect. I would go here by myself or with a group of friends on Thursday because it's ladies night.

I went to the yelp event here because 1) I love renewing memories of my childhood and 2) there was free wine involved.  I brought two friends along and all of us had a great time.  I painted a bowl with an Alice in Wonderland theme...checkboard with an Eat Me candy in the middle.  I plan to use it as a candy dish although that can be dangerous given by willpower.  It's cool how they show you what color different numbers of coats will turn out to look like.  I was really happy with the outcome.  They said it would take a week to be ready but it ended up being only like 4 days.  When you pick up your pottery it comes in a Color Me Mine bag and is wrapped up really securely.

I would definitely go back here but it seems really expensive for doing something sorta...pointless.  The "sitting fee" or whatever they call it was waived for the yelp party but I still spent $23 to paint a bowl that I will really rarely use.  If we also had to pay that fee it would have been way more expensive.  I think the idea of the store is really fun for kids parties and for true artists but for someone like me who is just looking for ways to kill time in life it was a fairly expensive way.

How to spend a Sunday with your BFF...

Go to an early brunch at Good Enough to Eat on the Upper West Side.  check

Get Manicures Next Door at Cindy's.  check

Go and pick up BFF's husband and daughter from their morning movie UP (GREAT movie BTW).  Drop aforementioned spouse off at home.  check

Go with BFF & her daughter to Tribeca to paint ceramics for Father's Day.  Have so much fun that you go crazy painting a flowerpot, listen to a great soundtrack, watch all the parents and children come in an make Father's Day gifts and spend hours gossiping, painting (even being creative) and enjoying the bright sunshine of the day.

I want to bring my other friends back, and bring a bottle of wine.  It is a great group "event". Expensive for what it is, but you really are paying for the whole experience.  You pay a "Studio Fee" of $12.00 ish, and buy your already once fired blank - plenty of cups, plates, bowls etc - including a bust of Elvis, piggy banks, unicorn, Buddah and Obama.  A cup, a vase, a plate, a butter dish or some kitsch - there is a whole wall of possibilities.

Once you paint it, or sponge it, or decal it or whatever the artists in residence advise you to do, they will glaze it and fire it, and a week later you pick up your finished piece.

Next week, I'll post a picture of my $46.00  finished flowerpot. ($23.00 plus the Studio fee and tax).  For now, there is a picture of the just painted flowerpot.  Like I said, you are not paying for the product, you are paying for the experience as a whole.

We spent hours there (even running out for iced coffee during a break in painting)  Yes, four priceless hours painting a flowerpot.  Not just a flowerpot, but a keepsake of  a fantastic day spent with people I love. (I even went a bit crazy in the spirit of Father's Day and painted my hands green to decorate it  - after all, all the babies were doing it - and this really is the only way I'll ever have a green thumb - see the picture!)

Stopped in last night to color me mine a big fat mug at a yelp-sponsored event. It was a lot of fun.

They'll have my pottery back to me glazed and fired in about a week. I'll have to wait to to pass judgement on whether the whole experience was worth it based the the finished result of my piece. Although that may be a reflection on my artistic abilities than the good times had while making it.

The experience was fun. Many people were creating pieces for decoration, others were creating unique gifts for specific individuals. And we all had a great time sharing this experience, and watching the creativity of others.

So last Friday, I was chewing the fat (where does this expression come from?) with a fairly new work acquaintance.

Me:  So what are you up to this weekend?
Him: I dunno, just taking it easy. You?
Me:  I'll probably just hang out with my girlfriend.
Him: You have a girlfriend? Really?
Me:  I know. And she's not blind!
Him: No, it's not that...I just thought you were...fancy.
Me:  Nope.
Him: It's OK if you are. Nothing wrong with that.
Me:  I know. But I'm not. I can see how you were fooled, as I am so well-dressed, and such a good dancer.
Him: Haha. Riiiiiight. So what are you two going to do then?
Me:  Ah...probably going to...paint some pottery.
Him: Haha. Riiiiiight. You had me going for a second, fancy boy.

Well, contrary to his belief, I am not gay, and painting pottery was not a euphemism. I attended a friend's birthday party at Color Me Mine, and I painted my ass off.

Now, I want you to disregard all the reviews talking about how this is a great place to catch up with your girlfriends. Because painting pottery is manly all the way. So next time you're going out to a sports bar with your buddies, step up. Be a MAN. Say: "Guys. Screw the game. Let's go paint ceramic teapots."

And they will all say: "Thank you so much for having the courage to step up, [insert your name]. I've always hated sports, and I never had the balls to admit that I loved pottery. You are my hero. Let's go paint mugs together."

And you will all have a pretty good time. If you are with people who can carry a conversation, it's a nice way to spend an evening. You can bring in wine, or one of those beer balls/mini-kegs. We also had pizza and a birthday cake.

And although it's not the cheapest activity around, you come out with something you can actually use (unless you decide to paint a T-Rex, or an elephant, but then you've just got a SWEET centerpiece for the dining room. What? That's classy, right?). Now I have an awesome chopstick bowl, and my girlfriend has a great mug. (See picture.)

If I had any complaints, it's that they don't accommodate a birthday party of 45 people very well. I'm not sure if they just didn't believe my friend when she said she was having 45 friends come in, but they were supposed to reserve the entire front room for us, and the party ended up having to split off into the back room as well.

In addition, seating is very cramped, so getting up and down isn't very easy. This wouldn't be such a problem, but they ration the paint a bit, so you need to keep going back for another squeeze. Also, if you're me, you will undoubtedly get paint all over yourself/everyone else as you bump your way up there, and (surprise, surprise!) ceramics break.

This past weekend was my first visit to Color Me Mine, and I definitely can't wait to return!

The selection of pottery pieces, colors, designs, etc. is enormous. The staff is very friendly and hardworking, and they even explain how to create different effects on your piece. This was especially helpful, since I was in the mood to create something that doesn't look like the work of a 4 year old for a change. I asked one of the staff members for assistance a number of times and she was happy to oblige each time. My mug came out so much better than I imagined it could have and I had so much fun doing it!

The atmosphere is so relaxing. The room is airy and open, with large windows and sunlight beaming in, and light music plays throughout. Plus, once I found out you could bring your own food and bevs (including alcoholic ones), it sealed the deal for me. I'll definitely visit this place again.

I really enjoy coming to this place for painting.  You can't beat the rates.  I have known some places that charge per hour, but Color Me Mine has a flat fee of $12 + you pay for whatever piece you paint.  Their customer service is great.  I had to go in for two days to finish painting a gift and they remembered me right away.  When I called to ask how soon I could pick up the item, they remembered me when I gave my name and even put my item on rush.  Plus you can bring your own snacks and wine if you want.  The establishment really gives their customers freedom to make themselves comfortable so they can enjoy the creative experience.

I love this place, although they have franchise locations worldwide you would think this was a one location hidden gem (in fact thats what I thought it was until I read in the paper about Al Pacino taking his family to a Color Me Mine location in LA and looked up that they're everywhere) . For those of you who aren't familiar this is a paint your own pottery place. For you grown ups with the kid/artist in you, feel free to bring a 6 pack along or even a pizza as I've seen a number of people do this. Color Me Mine is a flat rate for painting here so take all day with your masterpiece if you want. The only price that changes is the price for whatever item you pick out. They have a great selection from kitchen stuff like plates, bowls, teapots, etc.., to decorative items and some functional items like boxes (which I always seem to choose for some reason).

They have very friendly staff here to help your process along and a ton of colors, brushes, and design books to get the creative juices flowing. When you're done you put your name on the bottom of your piece and leave it there as they bring it to a kiln to put a layer of gloss and bake the color into it. You have to come by later in the week to pick up your finished piece which always seems much more professional looking once the finishing process has been done.

Cool alternative to going to a club or staying home and a great place to make a thoughtful gift for someone or take the kids.

i love this place. i felt like i was in elementary school again with all the paint all over my hands, on the table and not really knowing what i was doing. but it was a good time, not necessarily cheap though. it depends on which ceramic you choose, some are more expensive than others.

i was here on a random tuesday night near closing, so i only had an hour to make something. i chose something simple so there was a smaller chance of me messing it up. SO i chose a pot and decided to just paint the outside one color and the inside one color and write the words "HUNNY" on it to turn it into a honeypot! (winnie...winnie the pooh..honeypot..yeaa i'm so creative)

the short asian girl who was working was really helpful. she answered my bazillion questions with a smile. it was nice and peaceful inside seeing as how there was only one other girl there other than the boyfriend and myself. there are so many different colors to choose from. and they have STENCILS for artistically challenged people like myself. love it.

my honeypot came out fine. it's not ugly, it's actually pretty decent. very simple and nice. go me! will have to come back another random tuesday again to make more things. eventually, i hope to be able to make something as good as the stuff they have on display. but that will be in the far, far, distant future.

Color Me Mine is one of those paint your own pottery type places.  The first time I walked past this place, I was excited to have something to compare to Our Name Is Mud.

I was just in here this past Saturday and it's a really nice space.  The pieces can be a bit pricey (especially for some SMALL pieces), but the paint time fee is a flat rate of $12.  You could just sit here all day from 11am to 9pm and paint for $12 (and the cost of your pieces, of course)!

The downside?  You have to keep asking them for paint!  At ONIM, you can just get whatever you need.  Oh well...  The people there are really nice, so I guess it's not really a problem, but kinda annoying (especially if you are kinda in a groove...).

Awesome! I went to color me mine last night with 2 friends for an Adult paint your own wine-glass class.  Kate was great, we got wine, and we painted wine glasses.  It was relaxing, pressure-free and a great time. Color Me Mine is a great alternative to an expensive night out and the best part is that when it's all over, you get a souvenir! I can't wait to go back for ladies' night.  Side note - Thursdays' are Ladies nights and Kate informed us that you can always BYOB and food.  I'll definitely be going back soon!

Color Me Mine is a perfect spot to catch up with a few girlfriends.  The paint your own pottery shop has a vast selection of ceramics to choose from.  Prices for the pieces aren't necessarily cheap (ie $24 for a teapot) but the experience is worth every penny.  Do go on a Thursday night which is "Ladies Night".  The studio fee is reduced from $12 to $6 during the hours 6-9pm.  Even if you can't make it on a Thursday night, the $12 is a flat rate and you could stay there for an entire day!  Did I mention you can bring your own food and wine? For a first timer, I was thoroughly satisfied with my experience and also grateful to the lovely girl that worked there for allowing my friend and I to stay past closing so that we could finish up!  Despite my mini panic attack after screwing up my bee design and the chit chattery girls next to us, I will delightfully return to Color Me Mine (well... I have to pick up my finished product)!  Although I've never been, this place has more of a selection than Our Name is Mud and is cheaper than Make.

Kate is great! I made a reservation for a bridal party recently and the manager, Kate was so helpful in answering all of my questions the many times that I had to call. When some members of our party arrived early, she had gotten them started and we were able to sit together at our reserved tables. The other girls who were working were extremely kind and helpful. We didn't feel rushed or pressured at all. They also play great music to make the experience even more therapeutic. Being in the city can be so hectic that when we came here, we felt relaxed and had so much fun, many thanks to the staff! Next time I go I'll be sure to bring some wine :)

I LOOOOVE this place.  I went with some friends on ladies night and we had a blast!!  The studio is so clean and nice, the selection of pieces and paint colors is better than any other pottery place I've been to in NY and they have SUPER nice and helpful employees.  One girl took me step by step though a painting technique and my piece came out looking AMAZING!!!  I highly recommend this place.  It's a really fun alternative to  another  boring dinner and drinks night out.
