My stay was actually a 4.5.

This gorgeous, mission-style hotel is right on the main drag of Delray Beach, a 15-minute walk to the public beach and surrounded by awesome bars, shops, and restaurants.
It's a historic hotel, built in the 20's, and there are photos all through the various enormous rooms of the ground floor.  They also have their original switchboard on display.  Free breakfasts are good, including coffee, eggs, bacon, and continental trappings.  Rooms are on the smaller side but very comfortable and clean.  Hotel is NON-SMOKING, which didn't turn out to be too much of a problem.  Staff was friendly and helpful.  There is a huge porch on the Atlantic Ave. side, and a bar in the lobby open 5-12.

The Cabana Club (5 free shuttles back and forth per day from the hotel) has a private beach, one side of which is reserved for smokers and dog people.  Our waiter at the restaurant hooked my bf up with an amazing sandwich that wasn't even on the menu - that was much appreciated.

Stuff to look out for:
1) The elevator is the original hand-operated - very cool historically, but a pain if you are coming in at night, with heavy luggage.

2) No business center.  In such a beautiful beach town, though, why do work?

3) Not enough shuttles to and from the Cabana Club.

4) This hotel is heavy on the senior citizens.

But for a romantic getaway...I highly recommend this hotel.

PROS:
- GREAT value.  Room rates were reasonably priced and include several complimentary features.
- Temporary membership to the Cabana club (free shuttle rides, Beach access, salt water pool, showers, etc)
- Decent complementary breakfast including toast, coffee, tea, eggs, sausage/bacon, fruit, muffins, etc.
- Great location.  Within walking distance to several downtown shops and restaurants. Starbucks across the street! =)
- The hotel is green certified and uses lots of renewable resources.
- On site laundry room.
- Flat screen TVs with easy A/V hookups.

NEUTRAL:
- The hotel itself doesn't have a pool on site.  This isn't really an issue considering the free cabana club access.

CONS:
- Despite being informed by staff that wireless Internet was available "all over the hotel", signal strength is very poor in the rooms themselves.   Travelers should plan on only being able to use it in the downstairs lobby area.

- No real business center.  If you have the unfortunate need to work while here, you won't have access to a printer, fax, or quiet room to do work.  To be fair though, it's clear that the hotel and surrounding area are meant to be a vacation spot, not a stopping point for business travelers.

While I didn't stay at the hotel, the Colony Hotel has a sweet little outdoor bar with a latin/jazz guitarist (Eric Hansen) who plays on Fridays till midnight.  The drinks are generous and fairly priced.
