I love you Colony pizza.
Keywords: thin crust pizza, beer in pitchers, diner booths, hot oil, thick wooden tables, popular, Irish style bar, long waits, kind and wonderful staff.
Narrative: This is one of those spots I have to hit every time I go back to Fairfield County. I grab a handful of friends, order a bunch of pitchers (which come with tiny water glasses that make you feel like you're putting beers back like it's 1999), and we each order a pie a piece...usually mostly variations of the hot oil pies.
The pizza takes so long on a busy weekend that we play the finger game. In case you don't know how, it's a perfect time-waster: everyone has a finger on the rim of a filled baby-cup. You take turns around the circle saying 1,2,3 and on "3" people either leave their finger on the cup or pick it up as you say the number of fingers you think will be left on the glass. If you get it right (i.e. you say "5" and there are 5 fingers left), you are out. If you get it wrong, you stay in the game. Last one in the game drinks the cup. Repeat. And again.
Entertain yourself similarly. Drink some beers, talk amongst yourselves, and wait for some of the best pizza on the east coast.

One of the best pizza restaurants in Fairfield County.
Simple menu, just pizza, old and fun atmosphere, amazing pizza.
This isn't like your normal "Planet Pizza". This is Irish Pizza...at its best.
The ingredients are simple. AMAZING. Each pizza is individual. If you are looking for a great pizza with friends...make it colony.
The Hot Oil and Sausage pizza is heaven on a plate. Try it!
Cheers
Very good pies. A little overrated, but very good.
I'd come here more often if there wasn't construction going on in the area. Because of that, it takes 30 minutes to get there when it should only take 10 or 15. You should have good parallel parking skills if the small back lot is full and you end up having to park on the street.
I like the hot oil and sausage pie. Sorry, no slices here! The pizzas are usually better eaten fresh out the oven, so if you can eat here, go for it.
I would normally give Colony 5 stars, but for the past 2- 3 months I feel that the recipe there is changing. Normally this pizza is my absolute favorite and I still keep going to see if it'll ever become as good as it used to be. The Stingers, sausage and hot oil is THE best combination. The staff once they get to your face are awesome. It's definitely a townie place, but that's what I love about it. Great pizza, great atmosphere for down to earth good pizza!

Place is dirty, service stinks, nothing good to say about it.
My most favorite pizza joint!
I've lived in NY for about a year now and still haven't found a pie I like as much as CG's pies.
Thin crust, perfect crunch! Great cheese and toppings (Hot oil and sausage *drool*). I've actually brought some home once... to CALIFORNIA! yes, it's that good.
Gets incredibly busy.
Classic, family owned, home-made-New-England goodness
This is Pizza Extraordinaire!!
Stamford-The City That Works, does not have good pizza joints, but man does this place rock. Located in not the best neighborhoods of the town, this place is usually crowded and they sell their pizza by the pie. You cannot buy a slice. The hot oiled thin crust pizza's are delicious.
I took two as takeouts to a party and I wished i didn't have to share them LOL. The whole texture and the taste is perfect.
If you are a pizza fan, and are in the stamford neighborhood, worth checking out this place!! It has a restaurant too though I have never sat there and eat in

What a great pizza place. Keep in mind this place does not have your fancy type California Pizza Kitchen food. Its pizza is even better!!!!
Come here for thin crust pizza with only your select kinds of toppings.
Don't come here if you want just 1 slice because they don't just service a slice. You have to get a pie (its well worth it)
If I am ever around the area I will definitely come back here for their pizza.

holy crap so good! very simple menu. the pizza has a crispy thin crust, that doesn't get soggy at all. nice and greasy. went perfectly with a beer. this is going to be my go-to place for pizza in stamford. it's also really cool that the restaurant has been there for a long time. inside it feels really cozy and has nice big booths.
Great thin crust pizza. Now this isnt like your typical pie from NY but the pizza is awesome and they always have decent beers on tap.
Good late night place...
If I could I would give this place 10 stars. Been going here for about 9 years now and is the true definition of "Pizza Nazi". One thing on the menu and it's pizza, no crazy toppings, no BS. On a busy night there's about an hour wait for your table and then another hour wait for your pizza, and that's if you show up early. And honest NO ONE minds the wait, everyone there knows it's worth it. The decor, staff and attitude hasn't changed for years and that's how we like it. True hometown supporters and love people who know exactly what they're ordering.
GREAT prices that haven't raised in years. I recommend a 1:1 ratio meaning 1 pizza per person. Trust me you'll finish it and if you don't order enough you'll be sorry waiting for another one. A little hot for me but their hot oil pizza is one of their specialties. And DON'T ask for Parmesan cheese, it's like ordering extra bread from the Soup Nazi, NO SOUP FOR YOU!
Everytime I visit Stamford I go out of my way to get at least one pizza from the Colony Grill. This is just one of those old school places where one size pizza works for everyone and that's all anyone orders. They know they've got a freaking gold mine in their pizza so they don't screw around with other menu items.
Just try going there, tasting it, and thinking anything BUT "I wonder how fast I can shove this whole pizza in my mouth"

Everyone in my family has gone to Colony since before I can remember, the old irish restaurant hasn't been updated (only new bathrooms and wheelchair accessibility) in a very long time but the food is still great.
Don't come here if your looking for salad or any other food. Colony Grill is all pizza and only pizza. They don't give you a menu but you can ask for one. Hot Oil is the best "topping" you can put on your pizza. I recommend getting your pie WELL DONE otherwise it turns out a little doughy and chewy. You want a crisp, crunchy crust. The pizza is thin so if your very hungry I would advise you order your own pie as you'll probably finish most if not all of it.
Great place!
i was REALLY excited to visit based on the great feedback, but besides the great crunch factor to the crust i was pretty unimpressed. this leaves me sort of confused by all the rave reviews of this place...i did love the dive-bar vibe, however i found the pizza was just "pretty good".
the search for genuinely amazing pizza continues...
First the bad. The WAIT. I have no idea how many ovens they have, but at the pace they cook pizzas it seems like they cook one order at a time. Granted, I've only gone during lunchtime on weekdays so maybe they ramp up production at nights or on the weekends.
Still, the pizza is worth the wait if as long as you can keep yourself occupied and don't drown in your growing pool of drool as the smell of fresh hot pizza wafts by your table. Standouts include the hot oil pizza, peppers (both hot and sweet), and sausage(supposedly come fresh from DeYulio's Sausage across the street).
Oh, and fyi - there aren't any menus as far as I can tell.

I always end up stuffing myself. Try the hot peppers. Be prepared to wait for your pizza. A really long wait.
You can try to be really "cool" and super hip and you still couldnt hate this place. Its a legend in the city and anyone who has been there absolutely never has a bad word to say about it. If you love pizza you will not have "lived" without trying Colony.
My favorite pizza place in... well... THE WORLD! I'm serious.
Colony Grill is a real hidden gem. This place usually has a wait, but it's well worth it. The pizza (especially their hot oil pizza) is to die for. I first tried it this summer when I was working on a movie right here in Stamford. I was the only local Stamford-ite, and the rest of the people who worked with me were from New York, many from NYC. They loved this pizza, and that's really saying something! They say NY pizza is the best... Well let me just say that I've never had better pizza in NY. This pizza is just the perfect combination of cheese, sauce, and crust. The crust has a crunch to it, but it's not too hard.
Give this place a try, and I'm sure you'll love it too!

If you don't like thin crust pizza...suck it up for a night and come to Colony, I guarantee you will rethink your pizza philosophies. This pizza is knockout amazing!! The only complaint I have ever heard from people is that it's too greasy....If your that fussy though...throw out the man card and dap it with a napkin. I have never seen what else is on the menu, and have no desire too. If you like your pizza plain..go with the hot oil and thank me later.
If thin and greasy pizza is your thing, the Colony is the place for you. My father, who is from Stamford, raves about this place all so many years later.

Our ongoing review of local pizza restaurants puts Colony's pizza very high on the list. The pizza is super-delicious, and you can eat tons of it because it is so very thin and tasty! The hot oils they'll add to the pizza are good and worth a try, but do not totally transform what is already great pizza, in our view.
This is a pizza joint, good and bad -- dark sticky booths, paper plates, frosty draft beers and no menu alternatives if you have balky eaters/kids. Gotta get there early, as the wait to be seated can easily be 45 minutes after about 6pm on a weekend.

My "desert island" pizza. It's all they make, they don't have anything else on the menu. They don't even GIVE you a menu unless you ask. Who woulda thought that an Irish pub would make what may be the best pizza in the New York area? I lived in Brooklyn and worked in Manhattan for over three years, and checked out all the pizza joints, and none hold a candle to Colony pizza. Thin crust at its best. Must ... have ... stinger ...

HEADLINEZ! Driving up to Colony made me reminisce about the days of yore at "Crackhouse" aka Joe's pizza up in Beverly. Dimly lit, shantytown wood paneling, vinyl bench seating with crumblys all over it, and in the dining room....GIANT DISNEY portraits with only what I can assume are staff/owners names accompanying them (See my local pic of "Kiss me I'm Irish Garfield"). In addition, there was a frowny little mermaid and a SnowWhite and 2 of her dwarves but with names labeled on them like "Micky" and "Murph". I had been told of the wonders of the sausage and "hot oil" pizza and it's epic greasiness, and we were sat beneath one of those creepy clown portraits your Aunt probably kept in the basement. I think he was winking. They serve a few junky beers on tap and have your typical pepsi soda fountain selections. We made our order and Dave and I chatted about the too high glory hole in the mens room. Maybe if you stood ON the toilet?
Pizza was served, the crust was incredibly thin and crisp, the cheese all pocked with it's bubbles. The sausage strategically laid out in concentric circles, "pssst Dave....how old is it?". And as promised, there was a hot green pepper taking a grease bath at the center which was granted to me. How did I get so lucky? The sausage is apparently made across the street, and the hot oil is lain on the pizza and is made from soaking the aforementioned hot peppers within it. Delicious. I'd imagine that if we were really hungry, we could've each housed our own pizza like much of the other famblys there. It was sort of odd, why parents would order a 5 yr old AN ENTIRE PIZZA. Cut to documentary on "Child Obesity in America".

so this hole in the wall irish bar in stamford has the best pizza around? yup. we used to go here all the time when i worked downtown stamford, and i miss it. thin, crusty, oily, awesome .. hot oil pizza? who knew it was so damn good.
if you are passing thru stamford and have a pizza-jones, you have to track this place down. parking sucks most of the time, and if theres a football game on dont even bother - its already packed.
Freaking great pizza!
Casual to the max, it took a while for my West Coast brain to wrap itself around this wholly East Coast experience.
The interior of Colony Grill is all dark wood paneling, surreal wood carvings, and strange metal signs. It's pretty much always packed with regular joe locals so you may have to wait a bit for a table if you come late to dinner on the weekends, but it's worth it for the Schaeffer on tap (!) and the perfect pizza.
This is the thinnest-crust East Coast style pizza you're going to find with the perfect ratio of cheese to sauce. The meatball and sausage pizzas are yummy too, but the cheese pizza is the pinnacle of simple perfection.
Yeah, the servers are brusque, but you'll understand when you see how busy it is. Hey, for $6 a pizza, I don't mind if the waitresses don't want to chat me up.
There's even a jukebox!
Pretty sure it's cash only, but I believe they have an atm if you don't come prepared.
I love Colony. Great atmosphere with lots of character and the pizza is top notch. Its really a great place.
I can't bestow Colony the honor of being the best pizza place in CT, because the competition is just so tough here. But I give it a solid top 5 and by far the best in Stamford. Its a great, great place.
If you like great, thin crust pizza and a nice warm place, Colony is for you.
Great dive bar. Great bar to watch football. OK pizza. They don't have any other food. In the winter, it's very cold!

The crust is phenomenal, there could be a few extra toppings. Hot oil is great. Good experience overall. If service was faster and the ambiance a bit more up to date I would have given 5 stars.
After living in Stamford for 3 years and hearing countless recommendations for Colony Grill, I finally decided to go with my roommate. The style of pizza is thin crust, and as Deirdre said, the cheese to crust ratio was perfect. Their hot oil topping is also very tasty. The service at the bar was very good, and I found the people there to be friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, I had to give Colony 3 stars because I found their crust to be very hard and chewy, and I wasn't impressed with the cheese on the pizza either.
If you're looking for good thin-crust pizza in a casual environment, try Vinny's Backyard on Hope St. Their style of pizza is very similar, and they offer all of the same toppings. In addition to a crispier, more easily edible crust, they offer a much bigger selection on their menu, and they have more seating than Colony.
Awesome thin crust pizza. Ask for the "hot oil" plus whatever other toppings you're interested in for a great kick. I wish they delivered.
My family is from Connecticut, so I go back east to visit from time to time. I swear if I had unlimited $$$ I would fly to Connecticut from California EVERY month to have Colony pizza! My mouth is watering just thinking about it. The crust.. the cheese.. the sausage.. the peppers.. the hot oil.... AHHHHHHH!!!!! It's a total family tradition. We each get our own pie, and a few pitchers of beer, good times for all! I was out there for two weeks during the summer and ate there 5 times lol. I can't get enough of the place. I love California, but I miss that Colony pizza like crazy.
Great pizza and a fun place to go get a beer . .when it's not too crowded. Even before they reduced thier pizza size I used to have no problem putting down a whole pie. Although I was a little bummed when they did that . .I suppose my waistline is the better for it . . and the pizza still kicks ass.

Fantastic pizza. Simple cheese with hot oil is the way to go.

Classic dive joint. The pizza with the Stingers and Hot Oil is outstanding. Just make sure you have enough beer to wash it down.
Get your orders in fast and know what you want when the servers come around. The place is always busy and it might be a while before you get served!
Put a check in the "must experience" box. It's worth it!
Ok so it takes forever to get your pizza, but once you get it, wow, if you order any pie without the hot oil you are missing a truly exceptional pizza experience. Their pies are thin, thin, thin but they pack a wallop. Toppings are always super fresh and if you try you can finish a whole pie very easily.. This is the perfect post movie place to have a pizza and a beer. if you want to say Vinny's Backyard is better, you have been smoking something. While Vinny's is good it is not Colony and don't forget Colony has been here forever. It goes back to a time when people in Stamford didn't have to lock their doors at night. The only issue with colony is the parking lot is tiny. If you have an SUV don't even think about this lot. Find a nice spot on the street and walk.....
Real basic neighborhood bar which serves only great pizzas. The hot oil and sausage pie was excellent! Not fine dining.
