Okay, this is quite possibly the best Mexican hole-in-the-wall of them all. If I was on my death bed, I would have someone drive me for half an hour down to Chula Vista just so I can have one of their humongous burritos to finish me off. Seriously, these are the biggest burritos that I have ever seen. And they don't even skimp out on the meat/seafood. I've tried a few things on the menu already. The quesadillas here are also very large, but good. Rather than the flat kind that you get at Roberto's that serves as a snack or side, these quesadillas are stuffed with your favorite meat. You can never go wrong with a California burrito, but feel free to try any of the other burritos they have here. They have a big selection, such as the Del Mar, which I think is shrimp and fish. They also have a surf and turf burrito with fish and carne asada. Their selection of salsas are also good; I always love the salsa verde anywhere, and this place is no exception.
Aside from the food, I've only been here in the day and so I have no idea what it's like at night, but there's plenty of parking and looks to be in a quiet little neighborhood. The thing that surprised me the most is the cleanliness of this place. There's always someone mopping the floors and the tables are nice and shiny. Oh, and last of all, this place is cheap too. A huge burrito that's the size of your forearm for under $10. I believe they're all around $5-7. What's not to love about this place??
YUCK!
I had the chicken burrito and the carne asada tacos.
1. the burrito had nothing but nasty pieces of chicken, not like dark meat or anything like that, but nasty un-recognizable pieces.
2. the carne asada taco was nothing but grease and grizzle.
Colimas has gone down hill. This place is greasy and nasty.
Once upon a time this place was sooo good it was understandable that they expanded the restaurant when the used book store next door closed down. They had the BIGGEST burritos and suprisingly the quality of the food was good for the money.
Unfortunately the economy tanked and prices of food went up (understandably) due to rising costs of gas, delivery, etc. With that said, there is no excuse to charge more and serve the horrible dishes that I received when I ordered the chimichanga and carne asada burrito.
I ordered to go too so I couldn't go up and ask what the hell happened to the food. The tortillas were old and chewy, the chimichanga ingredients were watery and bland, the carne asada meat tasted as though it were soaked in water, no flavor, absolutely inexcusible!
I know I'm not reviewing a 4 star restaurant but this was seriously a slap to the customers face, and it cost me an arm and a leg! Please save your taste buds and wallet for a more satisfying experience at another mexican restaurant down the street......starts with an "L" and ends with "olita's" see my other review on it. Ha!
I have no idea what happened to poor bunny. But loves mustard sums it up for me. Colima's rocks! I have tried a good portion of the menu and nothing bad yet. Unless you need to go on "The biggest Looser" one burrito will take you all day.It does not matter which one either.Carne Asada, Machaca Chorizo or even the egg and bean. I have no need for lunch after any of those. Fish tacos? Holy cow what a feast! Want a good appetizer? Get the carne asada fries. And now they have a Salsa bar and you can get whatever you want.
Colimas has never done wrong by me. RiDICKulously large burritos. I can barely finish them. The only thing is that the burritos are so big that sometimes they fall apart and it gets messy. You can make your own burritos here, or at least add things into the burritos you can order normally. Another drawback is that they close relatively early. Like 8 or 9 or something, which makes Los Alazanes up the road a much better candidate for selection. However if you don't want to drive all the way up Otay Lakes road it sure beats Lolitas which is just down the way. I'm surprised Lolitas hasn't taken all their business away, but it is definitely a lot quieter than its competition and not full of obnoxious high school kids. Take that high schoolers.
I love Colima's ! Right down the street from my mom's place, always clean, and they let you watch whatever you want on the T.V. The rolled tacos are my favorite and the California burrito isn't too shabby either. Carne asada nachos are good as well. Now that I think of it, i haven't had anything there that I don't like.
I only wish they were 24hrs.
When I used to live in Chula Vista I had a different mexican place for everything. Colima's is my enchilada and seafood place. The enchilada's are great and come with rice and beans. There are a ton of seafood offerings but I have only tried the fish burrito and it was great.
pros...love the chimichanga, carne asada burritos, quesadillas too. and i get called "mi ejo" by the lady taking the orders. this place has fast, consistent, good tasting mexican food. pretty nice selection at the salsa bar too. it is always clean, and well lit, and even has a few old school video games in the back of the restaurant. the wall mural is just rustic and handpainted in a homey kind of way. and there is lots of parking.
now back to the food. it is very yummy and delicious. i just love the chimichanga, beef of course. it is piping hot and super crispy even after a long 15 minute drive back home. it is like a nice protective cocoon of fried goodness. when you break the shell a steamy hot, searing blast of flavor and aroma hit you. then you start to salivate at the yumminess ahead. the carne asada burritos is just as yummy. so nice and juicy and tender.
oh i am getting hungry! and i just love the fountain drinks. they have the regular american fare of sodas, and then they have the mexican stuff, horchata (cinnamon rice water drink), jamaica (ha-mike-uh, hibiscus flower drink), pina or pineapple drink, and they are all whipped or huh-whipped if you are a "family guy" fan.
cons...it will get busy at the normal times, and you will have to wait a bit for your food, but rest assured it will be good.
I have a chimichanga, carne asada problem, and part of it is Colima's fault. This is a great little taco shop with great service and yummy combos. The salsa bar is great (you avoid the tight-wad distribution of salsa this way) and the fountain is open for you to refill your own sodas. They are NOT tight with the fixings on to-go plates ,either. I love that my husband's office (Bonita Acupunture) is right there...Umm...what time are you coming home? BRING COLIMA!!!
mmm... i don't know about this one. i agree, if you are a pure carnivore, than colima's is A'Ok. but if you have the SLIGHTEST disposition towards those things naturally green, veer away. i actually used to really like colima's, but i had to stop going because the vegetables were always ridiculously under ripe. that just wrecks a torta, no matter how good the protein is...
i thoroughly enjoy the fish burrito. you will, too.
Great litle Mexican place! Love their shrimp quesadilla. Never had any complains about any of their food. Unfortunately, it's not on my way home so I don't go there as often as I should.
