I'm not going to get into a debate about pizza in this review. Brick oven, Chicago style or NY corner pizzaria style. My personal preference as a born New Yorker is the last one, but that's not really the point.
I'm down in the Hampton Roads area a lot now and so I'm trying to try decent places instead of Fuddrucker's. I found this place through Yelp and thought it was worth a drive over from Chessy. This place has a sci-fi theme and I have no idea why? But the memorabilia on the walls was cool and the staff were different which I appreciate in a homogeneous place like this area can be,
We had the garbage pie (everything) and it was good. I also ordered the breadsticks based on recommendations from here and I was not disappointed. Don't let them get cold though. The pizza was good and they have a tremendous amount of beers on tap, which always endears me to an establishment.
My only regret is missing karaoke at 9 PM. That's on Wednesdays, in case people are playing the home game.
Finally, I had a slice from Cogan's, and they are a welcome pizza blessing. I've been meaning to stop in at Cogan's for years and for some reason or another it just hasn't happened until now.
Cogan's claim to fame is a spicy sauced pie. It was spicy alright, but not as spicy as the local favorite Chicho's. I did on the other hand find that the dough, toppings and cheese blend was better than Cho's any day of the week. Sorry Cho's, you had your chance.
In addition, Cogan's has 33 micro brews on tap. On a hot summer day that's a definite plus no matter how hot or mild the pizza sauce is. :)
Check them out if you're in Ghent.
ATMOSPHERE: Wow, this place is lively! Went on a Thursday night and it was 70% full at 8pm and by 10pm it was packed! It was karaoke night. Everyone was actually participating. It was fun to watch. They even had a "dance break" and tons of people got up to dance on the small "dance floor." They were giving out prizes too. Maybe it was because it was karaoke night but regardless it was VERY LOUD. I had to shout to everyone to talk.
I am confused as to the theme of this place.... their logo says "for spaceman strength and endurance" and inside are totally random decorations. Couple of chandelier-like light fixtures that make it look like an old dance hall.
Has the bar scene feel so it's very casual. Reminds me of a place that you would find in Little 5 Points in Atlanta, Ga.
FOOD: Huge selection of beers on tap - many I haven't heard of but then again I'm not a beer drinker. All kinds of subs, pasta, and pizzas including a make your own option, so there's lots of veggie (vegetarian and vegan) options! They also do 1/2 & 1/2 if the 2 pizzas use the same sauce. Ordered a 1/2 & 1/2:
1. Wild mushroom - I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised. This wasn't a plain mushroom pizza but also included scallions and ricotta. Both were a nice touch. I have never had ricotta on a pizza before, and I really liked it. The creamy texture is a great complement to neutralize and complement the salty mozzarella. The mushrooms were seasoned.... teriyaki style? It was also yummy.
2. 5 cheese - This was also good and included ricotta, mozzarella, provolone, feta, and white cheddar. However, too plain for me. I usually like some veggies.
The crusts were medium (not thick and not crispy thin). The pizza was not super greasy. I didn't even have to dab the top with napkins.
SERVICE: We had a group of 16 people and the waiter accommodated us with good service. The waiter came back to check on us often, which I liked.
PRICES: Very fair for what you get. A large pizza (~8 average sized slices, one size) runs around $15.
CONCLUSION: I actually think I might like this better than Mellow Mushroom (my all time favorite), but then again..... it's a tie. I would come here again if tunnel traffic is not bad of course.
Funky atmosphere, delicious pizzas, great beer selection.
Great spicy pizza (or not spicy if you want)! They hand toss it when you order so you can be assured that you're getting fresh food! Of course, they have other foods as well along with a very long list of beers.
This pizza joint is also a bar with indoor and outdoor seating. There's also a pool table around the corner.
this place doesn't even deserve one star. if you go to cogan's, then i have no idea where you come from. cogan's is by far the worst and most disgusting pizza i have ever had. who calls themselves a pizza joint and has tough dough? wtf. don't go here. stop supporting cogan's pizza that is worse than if domino's had a $1 large pizza.
Really good pizza, great staff, even for a special occasion I.E. a big group.
Lots of GREAT Beer on Tap. No joke with Beers. Pizza is offered in "Spicy" or not and it is very good. Great prices as well.
Yummy pizza with nice spicy sauce. The bread sticks are delicious as well. They have a great beer selection though unless you're there during happy hour it seems unnecessarily pricey. The crowd is a mix of Ghent yuppies and hipsters. If you have tattoos, make sure they're showing. You get better service if you lean towards the hipster side. I just hauled my husband around for my hipster cred, and my drink stayed filled.
The word on the street is that Sunday used to be $5 pizza day. No more! It's now $5 off, which is still a deal if you ask me. However, be ready to wait for your deliciousness. Sundays are packed.
Wish I lived a little closer...I'd be a regular. This place has a great relaxed vibe that makes you want to just hang out on the patio with a couple of friends and a couple of beers.
The beer selection is pretty vast and they have about 15 or so beers on tap as well as bottles. Every day, there is a special running on both food and drink.
I've only had the pizza here, but it was pretty tasty. The sub my friend ordered must've been good too cause he wolfed it down without a crumb to spare. The fries were hot, crisp, and plentiful.
The service was great, the waitresses friendly, and we never felt rushed even though we lingered for over 2 hours. Man, I wished I lived closer...
Cogan's has been around for a good 20-30 years and is known for its pizza, and the many varieties of it. There is only one size...large. There are also salads and hot and cold sandwiches on the menu. They have a lunch buffet that we did not try but which looked good and was a deal, $7.99 for unlimited pizza, plus a salad and a bowl of soup. Cogan's boasts 33 beers on tap and has a nice sounding happy hour, 1/2 off well drinks and cheap beer specials. There is also a Sunday deal, $5 off any pizza when dining in. Today, I opted for one of the salads since I have had the pizza (we often get it for a takie-outie). On the menu, the salad is listed as the spinach and roasted mushroom salad and has onions, hard boiled egg and bacon. Well, if you have read our previous entries, you know how the next part goes; I requested to remove the bacon and onions and to add walnuts and blue cheese. I also added chicken (calamari is another option). Hey, I like what I like and don't what I don't, period. I'm picky. The waitress did not seem to mind and my salad arrived perfectly. A plus for Cogan's, our food came out in a reasonable time. One thing we did notice, she did not come to 'check' on us between our food arriving and the final 'are you ready for the check' question. More water would have been nice in between (what is it with the water this week; see our City Line Cafe review). That is my only complaint, and I am not that revved up about it, so all in all it was a good experience.
Cogan's is a bar. It is not fine dining, but the food is good and you can eat and drink pretty much all day. The happy hour board said 11am-2am...we weren't sure if that was an error of if it is ALWAYS happy hour...it's 5pm somewhere, right. The music was great, Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen and others. I heard 'Disco Inferno' by The Tramps from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, 'Fire' by the Ohio Players and even 'Kung Fu Fighting' by Carl Douglas...disco and funk, you can't beat it. Since I'm ready to have a dance off at any given moment, the music elevated Cogan's to another level.
Stop by for a few slices, some drinks and good tunes. There is always a good mix of patrons there as well.

When I patronize a restaurant with 'pizza' in the name, I feel it is only appropriate that I order the pizza. There are many different schools of thought on what makes the ultimate pizza. Deep dish or thin crust? Chicago or New York? Too much sauce? Not enough cheese? I am not a crazed pizza fan, but I like it every so often. Whether the crust is thick or thin isn't as important to me as the texture. I want it to be crisp, not soggy. As for the sauce and cheese, I don't want to over or under whelmed by either. We had dragged Brianna* along again, which provided me with a pizza partner. We ordered the 5 cheese pizza. It was rockin! Even with 5 different cheeses, the sauce to cheese ratio was nice. I really liked the crust. You can watch the pizza man toss the dough in the air as he makes the pie too, which is fun to watch if you have juvenile tendencies as I sometimes do.
Service was okay. It took a while to get the check and no one checked on us after the initial visit, but this is a pizza place, not a 5 star dining establishment. The clientele was predominately male (hey, real girls eat pizza too!), with some hospital workers hitting the buffet, and I was pleased to see that the bar was occupied at noon on a Tuesday. The atmosphere inside is kind of old, meets rock n roll, meets blue collar, meets biker...but it appears to be clean and well organized. The restrooms are "asexual" as Alex called them, so of course when I used one the lid was up. Handling the toilet seat in a public restroom is not what I like to do before eating. Lucky for me, the restroom was well stocked with soap!

Cogan's Pizza is located at 1901 Colonial Avenue Norfolk, VA 23517 and is open daily 11am-2am (eat in/take out available until 1:30 am)
Great pizza! A big fan of the spicy pepperoni. Really nice beer selection as well. Definitely a good spot unwind after a long day of work.
The pizza is pretty good. Having just moved here, it's the only pizza I've had so far. I'm more of a NY style fan myself and it's not that. But, it's not Chicago style deep dish or thin crust either. It's a whole other animal. It's tasty. The pies run about $15, which is not too bad for 8 good size slices. Our fave is the Meatzilla with bolognese sauce, bacon, peppronie, sausage, ham and extra cheese and sauce. Whoa, a heart attack waiting to happen.
We were really disappointed tha they were out of all five beers that we prefer tonight. Oh well.
2nd best pizza in Norfolk. $5 pizza special on Sundays. I don't drink but apparently their beer selection is legendary and cheap.
This place used to be the best when they first opened (for food). Over the last few years they have slipped for the most part, although sometimes the pizza is as good as it was back in 03 or so. It is hardly consistent, both for food quality and staff. If they could make pizza like they did during their first year, I would be there constantly.
