Coffee Society has a very nice atmosphere; somewhat quiet, spacious, and clad with artwork. It's a very nice place to chat with friends/work on projects/study/etc. I like how it's within walking distance from where I live :) However, usually there are smokers outside so I wouldn't recommend sitting outside unless there's not much of a breeze going on.
Their coffee leans toward the sweet side; I usually get the Hot Hazel or Caramel Shake, depending on the weather. It really depends on which barista makes your drink, but most of the time it's pretty sweet. Service is pretty good, plus I always enjoy the latte art on my Hot Hazel :)
Scant decor set in 1970s architecture & furniture = no ambiance. I hardly consider this a true coffeeshop. I don't quite understand why this place is so popular at night.
-- Espresso drinks (Americano)
Smooth and non-acidic, but not full-flavored at all. B/c of the flatness, I had no desire to finish my cup, and this seldom happens.
-- Brewed coffee
Lukewarm and mild, but again at least it wasn't acidic. The rich warmth was barely evident even in the strongest brew...
--Anise Biscotti
Homemade? Tasted like a buttery cookie, with barely any flavor kick unless "butter" counts. And btw, biscotti is supposed to be HARD.
Meh average price for bad coffee:
Americano = $2.20
Entering this cafe, it definitely takes me to a different place.
Berkeley California to be exact! maybe even my ole alma mater Davis (a la the late Cafe Roma, and Cafe Mishka in downtown davis)
This place definitely has a college town feel, conveniently located across the street from DeAnza, with TONS of open tables, chairs and outlets for laptop chargers and free wifi. SCORE!!!!!!
This place is definitely not pretty or trendy by any means.
Even though I have been here once, i haven't got the time to become attached to this place, however, looking at some of the reviews, i'm a little sad about the not so great reviews this place has gotten as of late. But my first impression is that it was a college kid study place. Stay as long as you like, as long as you buy something. Definitely beats panera, especially since they limit your wifi time to 30 mins between 11:30 till 1pm or something like that. LAME.
Doesn't have a cool look of an up to date, polished cafe, i mean there are cracks in the cushions of some of the chairs, my table was kinda rickety, but get there by lunch time, on a weekday and there's tons of seating. By the time you leave around 4 or 5, the non-student types start filing in for their afternoon java, and to come in and check their mail.
i like to characterize this place as somewhere you turn on pandora to the queen, or summer of '69 station, and you get a lot of stuff done. I say that because... thats where i got A LOT of stuff done. no one bothered me. Except for the occasional outburst from the barista----- begin sesame street Count voice---- ONE LATTE....HA HA HA... TWO LATTE... HA HA HA....
i had the Witch Hazel, blended ice mocha drink with TONS of chocolate syrup and whipped cream. It was aite, kinda sweet, and there was no description of what it really was on the menu, so i just gave it a shot. but it did the trick, i did not get sleepy, maybe a little hyper... Their carrot cake is probably not baked in house, definitely nothing to write home about that either. They sell an array of coffee drinks, and some baked goods. like chocolate muffins filled with what i'm guessing is cream cheese.
if you need a place in the south bay to use wifi, coffee society is the place!
Latte was good, but the regular house coffee was a-okay. A usual coffee shop with a hint of personality. Service was pretty friendly.
Free wifi and tons of outlet throughout the place is very convenient. Back couch area is a nice touch, but kinda creepy. I got a guy sitting deep in the couch staring at me the whole time so I needed to move.
I didn't know there were 2 coffee society, this one and next to the library? I totally misdirected my friend. Gosh darn it.... If you are meeting someone, make sure to mention that this one is located in the same shopping center as Shane Co and Hobee's.
A nice alternative to the other run down coffee shops and Starbucks in the area. When I am in the area, this is where I get my coffee. This is a big magnet for the De Anza College "tortured artist". Watch as they spin away in their Goth, scribbling away their mental diarrhea into a journal that nobody will ever read. Joy!
too bad they don't offer fair trade coffee. I really enjoyed the atmosphere as well as employees. I got a Hot Hazel drink with a heart shape on top for 4.50. people are very friendly. free Wi-fi. bathroom is not so clean. good music.
3.5 stars. I round down. You have to really earn them.
I like how they provide free wifi, and there's typically room for you to sit.
Coffee has good flavor, but not outstanding. I got a hazelnut latte, and it was way too sweet. I couldn't taste the espresso. However, they had pretty good foam, and was close to the quality of micro-foam I look for in a good coffee shop.
Biscotti: I think it was a fluke, but if so, the whole batch of biscotti should be replaced immediately. It was soft. Biscotti should be hard and dipped into your coffee to be eaten. I could chew it straight! It was probably my fault that i didn't say anything, but still... they shouldn't be soft.
I'd like to give it another star, but the ambiance is drab. You have tan walls, and some random art. I miss the color and mural.
I come here for convenience, but if I want my coffee-snob quality coffee, i go to Barefoot.
This Coffee Society is ten times better than the one located near Cupertino Library.
Why you may ask?
1. Compare to the 3 indoor tables that the library location has, this place has a plethora of tables, chairs, and even couches all around the shop! And to mention, different sized tables for big groups or small groups!
2. Plenty of plugs for all you laptop users that forget to charge your laptop before you leave the house! ( aka me )
3. Very spacious and good lighting.
4. There is room in the back of the shop where alot of people study also in groups or so, which I thought was quite neat.
5. Free WIFI
6. Convenient plaza with plenty of parking and food available such as Jamba Juice, Japanese Food, Thai Food, Frozen Yogurt, Quickly's, Hobee's and etc...
7. Right across from De Anza College for you students!
I like how the whole coffee shop is surrounded by all clear windows..It makes the place look trendy but at the same time very distracting since you can see whatever that is going on outside. The floor is a hard pebble stoned like texture which was different I thought.
Coffee is coffee! As long as it helps me stay awake! What else can i say?
Not to sound conceited, but I think the gal that rang me up likes me. She didn't charge me for my Italian soda!
Nice outdoor seating. Varied clientele keeps the atmosphere interesting here. Try it, you might like it.
very pricey coffee and not worth the price. Parking is a little hectic and the drinks taste very watered down.
I'll save my money and time and walk over to starbucks instead..
My friends & I come here weekly. We have enjoyed many cold and hot beverages. Service is good and we have gotten to know the people who work there.
Yesterday was a bit different, & I walked out empty handed (was too distracted). Somewhere along the lines of Sunday evening to Monday evening I got a tick. I am not sure of where I got it, though I can retrace my steps. My friend noticed it on my ear last night at 7:30p. Mark (who works there) and a slew of other guys who hung out outside came to my rescue. They were able to burn/kill the tick with a cigarette & pull it out with tweezers. I am very grateful and happy that they were able to help me out. Never had a tick before, though it was nice to have people help me out in a jam like that.
Over All: Great drinks & service. This visit was different then usual, it is nice to have people help out when someone is in need. I don't think you could get that from any other coffee shop. Hope to remember to get a drink next time.
Love this spot for java. Stopped by for a latte and a scone while waiting for friends. lt was a nice break from the mass produced Starbuck's. The energy in this place was buzzing with relaxed energy. I know that sounds weird, but that's the best way to describe it. Being across the street from De Anza college, it has the college feel.
I'll definitely come here again!
2.5
Coffee Society is definitely not my favorite coffee house to go too but with it's late hours and convenient location, I often find myself there late at night. Service is always a bit meh and can be slow if there's a line since sometimes the cashier is also the barista. However there's a little alcove where there's a bit couch and there's free wifi.
Lots of seating, both inside and outside. Free wifi and a good number of plugs. One of the few places in the area that's open late (other than donut wheel). Across the street from De Anza and surrounded by restaurants so parking during the day might be bit of a pain. Really nice barista, laid back environment. Can't say much about the average drinks; nothing special and I didn't mind the prices.
Would come here at night to hang out, but would rather go to the patio/outdoors area at whole foods during the day, esp. if the weather's nice.
I came here yesterday with a few friends and I like the atmoshpere all around, the cashier chick was a cutie and super sweet. We sat outside and everyone around was just miding their own business while we sat and talked about nonsense. It was nice, I'll definately be comin back :)
Takin' it back old school yo! What I mean by that is that I used to go to the Coffee Society quite often when I went to high school in Cupertino. This place was the hang out and the cool place to be. I've stopped by there a few times and it still has not lost it's charm. Coffee Society attracts a myriad of people from preppy, conservative, emo and jocks.
Coffee Society has a cool set up with chairs inside and outside. The walls are all glass so you can see clearly through which adds an open feel. The venue is somewhat clean and most importantly, the coffee is SPECTACULAR! I am normally a Peets kind of guy but if I'm ever in the Cupertino, my loyalties lie with Coffee Society . . . bar none.
I love Coffee Society and the crowd it brings. The ambiance is great as there is nothing better than pulling out your laptop with a great cup of coffee while sitting in a chill and relaxing venue. I would give Coffee Society 5 stars but they are not very clean.
The best Cafe Mocha in town. Highly recommended
Coffee Society: Cupertino's all-purpose coffee shop. Come here and witness the demographic make-up of my great hometown. On any given day, you'll find girls gossiping about their dramatic non-relationships over lattes, geeky boys reading the Economist over the house coffee, and dads making venture capital pitches over hot tea. Skater kids lounging on the outside bench, Asian kids smoking on the patio. De Anza students working on their latest graphic arts project.
What is it about Coffee Society that makes it the defacto meet up location when in Cupertino? 1) it's relatively late closing time (11:30?); 2) plentiful seating; 3) free wireless; 4) loyalty from our high school days when it was the only coffee shop in town; and 5) non-Starbucks nonconformity but relative lack of hippies/ Santa Clara city residents (I'm thinking particularly about another independent coffee shop down Stevens Creek). The place is a little run down, but it meets your hometown needs. The staff is always pleasant and they offer mugs instead of paper cups if you choose to drink in and save the planet.
Why the two stars? Poor house coffee at chain prices. Plus, a Peet's/Panera combo opened right next door and they have great house coffee.
coffee is okay and kind of pricey
lots of seating
friendly staff
interesting people
ditching class to play scrabble became a rather odd occurrence
How funny it was to come to this coffee shop and suddenly realize this was the mystery coffee shop I went to two years ago. I knew there was a shop in Cupertino that I thought was totally awesome, but never remembered the name until someone invited me here again. Unfortunately I got a fairly mediocre experience with my second visit.
The barista and cashier were rather annoying; first, the cashier was chatting amiably with the previous customers after their order was done, which would be fine if there wasn't a line waiting for him to finish. He simply mentioned my order to the barista who apparently had selective hearing, only hearing that I wanted a latte and not that it was to be non-fat and sans whipped cream.
I arrived to the counter to watch him lovingly shaving orange zest over a billowy cloud of whipped cream. The cashier noticed this too and said, "Oops, he put whipped cream on it, " and the barista said, "It's okay, it's not a lot." Sheesh, is that really the right attitude when you mess up an order? I went to the trash can and shoved the cream into it which then got the barista to apologize ("Wow, I didn't realize you cared that much" - why did I order it without, then?)
That aside...
The "study room" is pretty nice - plenty of outlets for people with laptops. A lot of the chairs and tables are uneven which causes them to rock back and forth. Overall, if I was closer to here I would probably make it my normal coffee shop just due to the coffee selection and wireless, but I kinda wish the employees would have a bit better attitude towards service.
I dunno why I haven't reviewed this place yet (besides being lazy). I swear I'm here like, every week anyway.
I like this place because it's got the great independent corner coffee shop kinda feel. It's been around forever too. This one is pretty big, has a good amount of tables (but they're a little on the small side), offers free wifi, and even has couches for you comfort people. Their coffee is great. The staff (while I haven't actually interacted with them) seem pretty open and converse regularly with their regulars.
The only annoying thing is that sometimes there are people there that blast their music.
That employee dude who wears the "I Heart Nachos" t-shirt is whacked out! I mean he's cool and all but, coo-koo--actually I'm a little peeved, I came in today asking if he saw my glasses that I left a couple of days ago and he's all:
Oh yeah! Those were yours? Yeah dude, I was totally wearing them yesterday and I'm like 'hey look at me I'm wearing someones glasses!' yeah, but nah, they're not here...
arg, I love my Coach knock-offs.
But your coffee is really good. I love that there is so much light. The amount of plugs is awesome. free wii-fi. ability to heat up my raspberry scone. Now, do you have the ability to osmosize a job for me as i surf craigslist?
I can't stay mad at this place, it's too well worn-in. A De Anza institution.
Coffee Society provides a nice relaxed environment to chat up with a group of friends and have a good cup of (insert favorite poison here). I almost always order Soy Hot Cocoa and theirs was slightly better than most places I've ordered it at.
The thing about Coffee Society that I like is the variety of seating areas they have. My 'large' group and I sat on the patio but I noticed that there was a big room with couches too. Nice. :) Plus, as mentioned, free wi-fi is always a bonus.
See ya there!
I lost my virginity at Coffee Society...
It's true, cause this is my first Yelp review. Ever. Hey, what kind of virginity were YOU thinking of?! :-)
Anyway, yeah, I'm here at CS and it's interesting that my first Yelp review is being uploaded live, on the free WiFi they offer here. Free WiFi, that's an additional star right there, compared to the $9.99 one would pay for connectivity at that other coffee house, you know, the one with the green logo...
So I stopped by here for a cupa joe and a bite to eat, on my way to the movies w/ some friends later tonight. Cupa joe: I got the iced Oregon Chai Tea, and while it's pre-made, it's one of the best, most flavorful, with just the right amount of sweetness for my taste. Others might find it too sweet, however, I have a LARGE sweet tooth. Actually, it's more like the entire jaw....sweet jaw? So it's the best Oregon Chai tea I've found anywhere, and that, plus the free WiFi, form the basis for the 4 star rating.
For the bite-to-eat, I got the quiche. Bleh. Even warmed up, it's rather bland. It's supposed to be artichoke heart quiche, but you can't really taste the artichoke flavor, or any other flavor for that matter. My conclusion? It's "edible", that's about it. So if you're starving, it'll provide sustenance, but you don't have to worry about getting fat because you overindulged on the food here!
About the staff and service. It's funny, there are three employees on duty at the moment, but no one is really up to speed on what's going on. I asked what kind of quiche they had, and the gal I asked couldn't quite find the quiche in the display counter. After I pointed it out, she went to ask her colleague, who didn't know what flavor it was. Then they both went to the manager, who said it was "either artichoke heart, or tomato" but he couldn't remember! Heh. So the staff is quite friendly, but not in a real hurry to be on top of their game, if you know what I mean.
So the food and service competence would reduce the rating to a one or two stars, but since the Oregon Chai is sooo good, and they have free WiFi, that bumps it up to a 4 stars for me. Which means, I'll definitely come back for the Chai and the WiFi, but not because of the food or excellent service.
Hope you enjoyed my first review....it's probably nothing to you, but as they say...you always remember your first time.... :-D
God, I love this place. I've been coming here since high school, about 15 years now (unbelievably two of the baristas have been working there just as long!). Maybe its mostly sentimentality, but its still my favorite coffee house. period. I moved up to Seattle 8 years ago and no matter where I am in the Bay, when I come home to visit I *always* stop here.
Though its a great place, I'm actually only giving it 4 stars because one of the three times I went on my last trip it was really just OK. The other two though...oh man.....good stuff!
+ love the witch hazel & the special drinks for chocolate lovers like me! I always crave it!
+ big selection of snacks and desserts
+ always genuine and friendly service! Thank you.
+ outside patio is great
- prices are quite a bit high, but it's worth it every time.
- too many lurkers w/ laptops that never leave!
Coffee Society seems to serve a larger purpose in this De Anza/Cupertino community than just a cafe (both good and bad)
In my many experiences here this place has been:
Library/Study Hall
Mos Eisley-eque cantina
Homeless Shelter
Makeshift Mental Hospital
Outpatient Clinic
Seriously though...in addition to serving some pretty good coffees/teas there is a, how do I say, INTERESTING clientèle here.
It's understandable that you see a lot of students cramming for exams as well as study groups discussing their classes. There are also the usual business meetings and people relaxing and socializing. But there are also some people here who may just want to seek out professional help with their schizophrenia, homelessness, narcolepsy, online gaming addictions, etc.
If you're lucky you can hear a mix of modern rock, folk, and trance music as well. =) Makes lounging in the numerous couches pretty enjoyable.
Also, there is free wireless and AC power. Great for all those homeless students and squatters who frequent the cafe.
At this very moment...there is a lovely mix of students, professionals, an unconscious man (with a yummy looking chocolate cake), a guy who is constantly having a "conversation" with his phone (or himself), a "herpetologist" (he MUST be, right? who else carries a boa constrictor around his neck into a cafe?).
I half-expect Greedo to come waltzing in looking for Han Solo so Jabba can get PAIDDDD!
"Koona t'chuta, Solo? Soong peetch alay!"
It breaks my heart to give Coffee Society only 3 stars. It used to be 4. Alas.
I've been a loyal customer since I first began to have my own social life - one of the Monta Vista high school kids that would come for breakfast on Wednesdays, study groups after school, meeting friends on the weekends... constantly. I still come here every time I come home; it's just my place.
+ : decent free wifi, a must in any self-respecting Silicon Valley coffeeshop
+ : good drink selection. I don't know what Starbucks generic stuff people are whining about, they still have the Borgias and Witch Hazels and whatnot
+ : they don't care if you linger for 8 solid hours and don't even buy anything
+ : friendly, interesting folks work there, different from the usual Cupertino sort
+ : nostalgia.
- : portions are small and prices are high (for the edibles)
- : the bathroom and art selection isn't as cool as it used to be (once upon a time, paint job/decor changed every month!)
- : all furniture is in slight disrepair... how old is that couch, seriously?
- : not really their fault, but sitting outside poses serious health risks! thanks, long-established-smoking-spot
The biggest drawback is that I can't afford this place anymore. They've gone expensive and yuppie. I imagine that reduces a lot of the business from high school and De Anza patrons, and that sucks because that's what made it a place I loved :(
Love the friendly and outgoing staff! The coffee is delicious and they have some interesting flavors, like the Shamrock Mocha (or something like that) and a assortment of baked goods. They have wifi and outdoor seating, and is across from De Anza College, so you get a lot of college students coming in. It has an artsy ambience to it, with the beautiful art on the walls and I think I noticed one or two interesting sculptures. Some of the guys that work there are cute! Always a plus!
The drip coffee I had wasn't anything to complain about. Friendly workers and generic looking cupcakes. Drink there, yes. Eat there, no.
I was kind of turned off by the ambiance. Some of the furniture looks decrepit and so mismatched. Not in any artsy perceived fashion, but more like I'm in a senior center that needs renovation.
Every time I go to Coffee Society I run into at least one person I know from high school. That isn't necessarily a good thing. In fact, it's usually very awkward and sometimes even unpleasant.
But Coffee Society is a South Bay staple and 4 stars it gets.
Coffee Society brings back memories of studying for chemistry. It does get frustrating when people start chatting very loudly and it's pretty obvious when the majority of the people there (at that time) were either studying or surfing on the internet.
I've only tried their hot chocolate, it's decent. The outdoor seating is a fun place to hang out and people watch.
If you like to smoke, there's a side area that's often populated by smokers. And there's benches there too
Came here yesterday wanting to caffeinate and grab a snack at a different locale, and indeed, my friend and I got just that. First comment my friend made upon our arrival was "is it just me or is it pricey here?" I started wondering if it was a bit different price-wise from Coffee Society in Campbell, which I had been to several weeks before and didn't quite notice the prices there on that occasion. What I do recall noticing between the two locations is there seems to be less choices at the Cupertino store, and less places to sit as well. I had a good raspberry crumble and mandarin mocha; my friend enjoyed his iced mocha and apple bar. We did agree that our combos were a bit on the sweet side, and had we known the sweetness level earlier, that would have changed our choices. However, very conveniently located for those who have any business around De Anza College.
Pretty popular around the cupertino area. Sometimes it's pretty hard to find a seat inside, probably also because it's located across from De Anza College and people come here to study. I don't come here that often, but it's always a nice place to hang out and the service is always top-notch. I'm not sure why it is, but the best hazelnut latte I've had was from here: sweet, but not too much syrup. And sometimes if they have time, they'll do some cute design in the foam. =) I haven't brought a laptop here before, but I hear there's free wi-fi?
I remember coming into here with my P-P-P-Powerbook 12" shortly after they opened. The arrangement was about the same as it is today, but there weren't nearly as many students. They had a lot of great flavored drinks that tasted decent.
I came here recently, and unfortunately the drink menu has been changed to a generic Starbucks style one. Anyone know the names of the former drinks? They will still make them, but they won't tell you their names.
Good lattes with super fine foam. Their French Vanilla Nut one is quite nice. Definitely still can't beat Blue Bottle but for proximity to my gym and adjacency to my fav Jamba, this place deserves a holler. =)
Service is chill and friendly.
It's 1993, 90210 is still buring up the television sets of high school kids and I'm out every night with my crew of wierd old friends, enjoying bowling or whatever while neglecting my studies. That's why I only got tinto Emerson and not somewhere that folks had actually heard of.
The Coffee SOciety was always where we ended up. I loved it then, when I could enjoy caffeine after lunch time. The mochas were always fantastic and before there was Starbucks all over the Valley, it was the choice for all Coffee needs.
The place is still a nice joint, hopping and the same faces I saw there when I was a senior in High School are there today. The stuff's still good too.
Decent coffee place across the street from DeAnza college and quite popular with the students and their laptops open. Because of that, hard to find an empty table. Latte was super strong and a lot of foam. They have a variety of tempting-looking desserts but when I tried the raspberry crumb cake, it was way too buttery and hard.
Bottom line: Popular but I'm sticking with Starbucks. And desserts look better than they taste.
I've been going to this place since I was 9 years old. My first drink ever was a hot chocolate and my first coffee drink was a Witch Hazel.
My last drink there was what was supposed to be a Grapefruit Italian soda.
Me: small, Grapefruit Italian soda please
Girl at bar: Let me see....oh we're out of Passionfruit
Me: Oh...well...I wanted Grapefruit
Girl at bar: Yeah Passionfruit and Grapefruit are the same
Me, trying to be the least condescending: ....nooo. Passionfruit is a tropical fruit, grapefruit is a citrus fruit.
Girl at bar: No, they're the same
Me: whatever, I'll have a Raspberry Italian soda.
See what smoking weed does to you !!
