My friend used to work here in the early 2000's when he lived in New York and modeled for Diesel. I heard this place was on fire. The owner used to hire the hottest aspiring male and female models and this was thee place to go for nightlife.

New York venues are funny, like Andy Warhol said, "We will all be famous for 15 mins" So for all "used to be hot spots" there is a legacy still in the walls, and a coolness that leaves remnants of time when these venues really shined.

I imagined what it would be during that time when my friend worked here, as I sat there 2 am on a Sunday, killing time before my 6 am flight. This was probably the only place open in Union Square that was crowded.....an eclectic crowd of people, one group of hipsters left with dark black Lady Gaga like black hoods and glasses...

I didn't see any model-esk staff, or patrons, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.  This place has an unspoken charm. There's a history in the walls. Always pay reverence to the institutions that are still standing and holding their own.

I'm torn!  I really dug the vibe of this place until about five minutes after I sat down.  Our server came up to us and said, "Hi - have you seen a hostess yet?"  And we replied "No."  She then stated "You need to see a hostess before you sit down."  Now, I understand the basic mechanics of a restaurant, but every table next to us was empty and there was no reason for her to say this to us.  So - after a member of my party honored her request and saw the hostess, she proceeded to seat us at the exact same table.

I mean, really?

uhh... don't go here for food if you expect to hold a conversation. screaming while stuffing down a brazilian steak sandwich and herb fries while sipping a makers mark manhattan is no fun, unless you had the manhattan first. anyway the food was mediocre. drinks were mediocre. crowd was looked fun though, even though i'm off the prowl.

two stars for, i'm not really sure

revisit? nah

and there's no rhyme or reason as to why i dind't use capital letters. i guess it was trying to convey the opposite of all caps.

I am not sure why this place is always full because the food here isn't amazing.  It can have something to do with the fact that its open very late so a good spot for all the drunks to flock to after a night of partying.  If you're looking to go to a diner after hours, this is probably a pretty good place.  If you're looking to go to a diner after hours and want GOOD food, go a few blocks west to Cafeteria.

I've stated it before.....the location is pretty convenient.

Being easy for everyone to commute to, my boss, coworkers and I, had breakfast here the other morning.

It was packed, but it seemed that everyone was having an early morning meeting, because it was a fairly subdued crowd.

I'm usually not a fan of Coffee Shop, but I will be perfectly honest that I went to townnnnnn on my plate of Eggs Benedict! Nothing super fancy just a well toasted English muffin, perfectly runny eggs, hearty buttery lemon hollandaise sauce, and well simmered slices of ham,,,,,but done right.

Not to mention the home fries are well seasoned chunks of potato mmmmmmmmm.

The downside is I barely paid attention and all I heard was "Gia we're going to need..." ::Munch...Munch..Munch" ".....So we're going to be doing Cannes and Tribeca Gia you should..." ::Chew and Savor...Chew and Savor:: "For The Golden Globe's we should all..."

Yeah you get the picture. The service is still crummy, but the prices are decent.......and the breakfast is darn right dangerous to your career.

Eat with caution.

We sat outside.... and I just couldn't believe that the hostess forced our tiny Chihuahua to sit outside the fence, while everyone was tripping over the giant bulldog that was allowed to sit INSIDE.  They didn't even give our dog a bowl of water!!!!!  So obviously, the service here sucks!
As for the food, it's blah.  I've had better eggs benedict at Denny's.
The only thing good about this place is that you get to sip coffee on the corner in Union Square, and watch all the crazies perform across the street.  It's just another overrated DINER in the city.

I don't think I'm really bringing anything new to the table with this review... but I'll give it a shot anyway. The place isn't as terrible as it sounds, it just (like me in this review) doesn't bring anything to the table in comparison to other places.

PROS:
- neat atmosphere
- super strong drinks
- always crowded and fun
- location

CONS:
- always crowded
- bartenders have an attitude
- expensive

Benson Y. and I contemplated for a while to decide how many stars this place really deserves.  I was leaning toward 4, but it would honestly be because I was starving - anything could've tasted good.

And hey - many reviewers say that a lot of the service is from Modeltress'...  but alas all we noticed were primarily rail thin Ambercromie and Fitch guys.  Fail.

We ordered the Bruchetta and herb fries.  The bruchetta had a nice presentation to it and the pears was a refreshing touch.  The herb fries, although cut and fried to perfection - lacked the taste I was hoping for.  My steak fajitas were nicely done, though Benson Y thought it was too medium.  However like everything else, we were utimately left with the feeling: "I could've made this at home."

Culinary wise - sure, come here if you want to get a quick fix for diner food (limited selection, but a changing menu of daily specials).  Tiny bathroom(s).  Not too sure about the lounge/ drinks.

I've gone back and forth in the Union Square area for years and passed this place more times than I can count.  Its physical prominence always gave me the impression that it is a place of some import but for some reason I just never stopped there.

When it came time to pick a spot to have a nice Friday night dinner I decided to finally try it out.  My coworkers spoke of "hot model" wait staff and I was told while it looked like some regular diner on the outside, the interior was a bit more than meets the eye.

I went with my girlfriend and fellow Yelper Albert W. and I admit I was immediately impressed by the interior.  The "smashed cups and saucers" display on the walls when you first walk in is rather fun, and the lighting and bar in the center definitely move this above your typical diner setting.  It looks very lounge-like and the music was definitely not what I've heard in most diners (more pop than country).

The service was prompt, and I immediately saw what my coworkers had been talking about.  Every bartender or waiter looked like they stepped out of a Gap ad or something.  Even better?  They had the "model attitude" to match.  Our waiter looked so impossibly bored out of his mind it border lined on amusing.  During the meal, he never did the "How is everything going" check I expect at least once during a meal, though when we waved him over he didn't dodge us either.

For our appetizers, we ordered a basket of the herb fries and bruschetta with pears and goat cheese.  The bread was nice and crispy and the cheese was fantastic.  I'll put this out there right now and say this was the best dish of the night.  It was super tasty but not soaking in dressing or overdone with salt.  The herb fries however were a disappointment.  I had heard a lot about them but to me they were no tastier than McDonalds fries.  I will say however that they were nice and crispy on the outside and just right on the inside.

Our entrees were diverse.  My friend ordered beef fajitas, my order was a salad with sweet potato and my girlfriend had catfish with sweet potato.  The beef for the fajitas was tasty, but he had asked for medium rare but the meat was actually medium to well done.  My salad was super tasty however, and the chicken was cooked perfectly.  The catfish was underseasoned, but cooked well and flaky.  The sweet potato mash was nice however, with a good balance of sweet and savory.

I do wish I could give an additional half star for this place since the food wasn't horrible and the service was "adequate".  I also think that I may have given this place a different rating if I had gone there just for drinks with friends.  In that respect it looks like a nice place to hang out.  For now however, color me unimpressed after all the hype.

I give it 4 stars for the drinks. I havent eaten here so I cant really judge the food. Went in on a weekday night to catch up with a girlfriend. We got in at about 10pm, and told them we were there just to have drinks, they didnt mind letting us sit in the restaurant and didnt make us sit at the bar which was a nice choice.
The drinks are good, very good (READ: STRONG), they are served nice and chilled, not ice melted watered down, and have an interesting selection. My faves from that night: passion fruit frozen mojito and the white peach sangria. Their sauvignon blanc was also good, im no wino though.

I went here for a friend's birthday and was really confused why we were at a coffee shop on a Saturday night, but as I descended the stairs to the basement and the music started getting louder - I knew we were in for a good night. DJ was awesome, couches were comfortable, there was more than enough space to dance and the crowd was really fun. I haven't ate there, but the waitress was really attentive with our drinks and I'd def go back.

I've been here a couple times and I like it a lot. The reason why I won't give it five stars it's because it's always crowded and you have to wait like 15 to 20 minutes to get a table, I mean, bring more tables or I don't know! Otherwise this place is really good, it's not expensive and the food is quite tasty.
The eggs aren't overdone, very fresh, same with the sandwich and with the salad, the home fries are delicious! The staff besides being hot (male and female) is very nice. It's great place!

Location, location, location.  That, and really attractive staff, are all Coffee Shop has going for it.

I've been here 4 or 5 times, and honestly the location is so convenient to so many places/activities/subway lines that I'll probably be back again at some point.  But this place offers little else to recommend itself.  The food is unmemorable, the atmosphere unwelcoming, the service is poor, and the bathroom gives me nightmares.  If you can walk a few blocks (which, granted, if you've been hitting the Flatiron bars all night you probably can't) there are some much better choices in the neighborhood.

Having said that, if you do eat here, go for the herb fries.  They're pretty good.

The downsides to Coffee Shop are well-chronicled. Crowded & Loud. Annoying service by the otherwise out of work "Models" that staff the place.

So really, there are only two reasons to come here....

1. You are jonesing for something better than a regular diner late at night

2. THE AMAZING BURGER AND HERB FRIES

Number 2 is the reason I keep coming here. Every time I think I'm done with this place it sucks me back in!

The GOODS:

+ Went on a busy Friday night with four girlfriends and didn't have to wait for a booth.
+ My friends enjoyed their burgers. They reported the burgers were cooked and seasoned well. There were herb fries everywhere and that's where I come in....mmm... herb fries... bangin!
+ I, of course, only ordered a side of macaroni and cheese and was pleasantly surprised by how creamy it was. (Trust, it's not Velveeta, as some other reviewers have suggested.) A good portion for a good price.

The BAD:

- Our modeltress had a nasty attitude (not all that all surprising, to be honest).  She eventually remembered this wasn't a catwalk and that she was working for tips, and tried to warm herself up to us. Maybe it was an off day for her but we weren't amused.

The most important things to note about this review are first, that I lived down the street and second, this place alll depends on your expectations.

This place actually only warrants about 2.5 stars on the experience and the food, but I will give it 3 stars because of its convenience.

Perks about coffee shop:
1) centrally located and easy to find. It's a neutral spot to meet up with a friend that your not really that close to, you know, or an awkward blind date. Meet here for a casual dinner or a quick drink at the bar.
2) Mojitos - yummy yummy, made with the right amount of carbonation and strong
3) The Fries - The cilantro and salt make this addicting
4) trendy feel, but slightly cheaper than other trendy restaurants

Downsides:

1) bar area can get crowded
2) Slightly pricey considering that it is a diner
3) Union Square Yuppie banker types abound

Neutrals:

1) food is typical fare, nothing really mind blowing here. Your stomach will be pleased, your refined palate probably not
2) the service is not effusive or particularly attentive. They ask for your order promptly, they bring it out. nothing fancy here.

Come here when you don't feel like digging through yelp for hipper casual spot to meet up with someone not so special. Have the right expectations and this is A-Ok.

P.S. brunch was okay. Only been downstairs to the lounge once, it was pretty empty.

okay, this time i hit coffee shop for brunch with and out of town friend.  he was in the area and really you can't not notice coffee shop.  the waitress was a little loopy and had to ask for my drink order (coffee) and my entree order twice.  it wasn't really anything elaborate and it wasn't that busy i did appreciate that she asked me for a fresh pot of coffee and didn't push us to leave after we were done.  my friend and i were catching up so we were the annoying people loitering over our coffees/teas.  there wasn't a line for seats.

i had the wild mushie omelet, which was average and nothing spectacular.  $10,95 is prolly not  what i would be willing to pay again.  i do wanna try the frejole brunch one of these days, so i'll be back for my caprihina shot.  i was there before noon, and special starts after.

service is still loopy there.  i think they are all lookers, but not good at waitressing skills.

Went in looking for a quick breakfast in the area.  Expecting to pay NYC prices (I live on the UES), I was still disappointed.

Hostess couldn't be bothered to seat us.  After standing in front of her for several minutes, I finally asked for a table for 2.  She sighed and looked annoyed I bothered her.  Isn't that her job?

Ordered a bagel and cream cheese, no tomato.  Menu states tomato an extra $2.50 and I knew I wasn't going to eat it anyway.  Wife ordered an omelet, cheddar only.  Food came after a loooooong time.  Food was just ok.  When bill came (after chasing it down for 10 minutes), I was startled to see my bagel and cream cheese was $5.  Seriously?? I asked the waitress why since I specifically said no tomato for the extra fee.  She said that was the price.  Only sad I didn't buy the bagel and cream cheese from the cart on the street for $1.50 (and the guy was actually smiling instead of our waitress who looked annoyed that we came in).

I love Union Square but still in search of a good breakfast there...

First of all, I love the music that they play on Saturday nights. For the most part, I couldn't have made better selections myself. Typically, I don't even care about the dining soundtrack, but this is worth mentioning because it was that good -- old school hip-hop while you eat... need I say more?

As for the food, I ordered the barbequed chicken sandwich, which was delicious. The barbeque sauce had a smoky and equally tangy flavor with a nice little kick, and the cilantro lime mayonnaise worked perfectly with it. The sandwich was accompanied by herb fries that were unexpectedly delicious; these french fries packed more flavor than any other fries that I have ever tasted.

I dig the dark & sexy renovated diner theme. But for a place with a "look book" (scroll down to read laura's review) and with such hot wait staff that clearly thinks it's better than we are, why are there televisions in the bar area playing sports?

The drinks were decent and overpriced but the mojito in a milkshake glass was a cute touch. I didn't order food because even I know this place isn't for eating.

oh coffee shop...so much potential...so disappointing.  great location, cool bar, nice atmosphere.

but it doesn't follow up with any of the important stuff.

ordered the california wrap...scrambled eggs, bacon, monterey jack and avocado in a tortilla...sounds delicious.  it comes out, and it's a breakfast burrito cut in half.  no sign of the avocado.

take a few bites to make sure it isn't hiding.  didn't find any avocado, but did find a nice black hair.  delicious.  ask the waiter about the avocado, and he takes it back to the kitchen.  a moment later he is back, after unwrapping half of the wrap and finding all the avocado at one end.

no new burrito, no spreading of avocado around, just a rewrapped breakfast burrito with avocado at one end.  quite annoying.

so thank you coffee shop for spreading out my star distribution a little bit...i was getting a bit top heavy over here.

Not really impressed. I went with a bunch of friends and got some really expensive coffee and not very impressive desserts.

This is one of those places where you get the feeling that the waiters judge you based on how well you'll tip them and then determine the amount of service you will received.

Apparently, we're not high on that scale. But, let me give you some advice - tips are based on the concept of service. If you don't come over and do your job, you're not going to get tipped well.

Some reviewers say that beautiful people get better service. What a load of crap. I've NEVER had trouble getting a seat and I'm ugly, pale, and usually badly dressed. But I have a secret: I treat beautiful people like people. I'm not impressed. Sometimes a 20 foot tall Brazilian girl will render me speechless, but I am able to get over it. I have seen people sweep in here at 2am demanding a table for 8 and wondering why they are ignored. Treat busy people with respect and you'll get a seat. The servers here have to put up with a lot of attitude.

I go to this place to sit outside or if it's really late at night. That's it. I used to hold meetings here, because you can close a deal when another man's brain has gone to mush looking at the waitresses. I realize now that I was being too devious.

I usually love the tamales (as long as the version of the day is not too weird) and the ropa vieja is solid. The fish and chips is good, too. The shoestring fries (which are just called "fries" because Coffee Shop is not a pretentious place) are very very good. Their burger is fantastic. Their spaghetti and meatballs are a wondrous hangover cure.

OK...I lied...I've been here for breakfast. The coffee is strong and will make you shake like you've got a nervous system disorder (because that's kind of what happens with coffee, actually: it's poison, but what sweet poison). The eggs and everything else are good.

I've never had a bad meal here. I've never had an amazing meal, either. It is what it is. The bar is pretty cool, but the beer selection is blah.

OMG, pleaaassseee.  This place is so overrated.  It's no Mel's (in LA) that's for damn sure.

The food they serve at Coffee Shop you can get at a Chili's for a quarter of the price and 10 times better service.

And the "waitresses"?  Totally moronic.  I don't care if you're a model or an actress, when you're (supposed to be) serving food and showing people to their tables, you're a waitress.  Get over it.

Well...I went down to this place to meet a co-worker last night for a few drinks. I was excited about the spot because I really like the Union Square area. There were kids skating around in the park. Couple passing out on romantic strolls. Really, just an ideal atmosphere.

Sadly, the interior of this spot did not match the exterior.  The staff was a joke. They're all very young and attractive, but...perhaps they should spend less time thinking about their modeling careers and a little more on their tables. We ordered two mojitos and some food. It took them 15 minutes to bring our drinks and 45 from the time we ordered to bring our food. (I mean, come on man...we ordered burgers???) When i asked for another round of drinks, it took our young vapid lady another 20 minutes to find the bar and bring them to us.

It's a shame. We would have had better service going to the Mc'donalds next door.

This place has a cute layout, and cute waitresses, but it isn't really a winning formula.  Somehow it always seems to have a B&T or out-of-town crowd.  I guess people just walk out of the station and it's the first thing they see, so you get *that* crowd.  Looking to meet new-to-new-yorkers, here's your place.

There *IS* a downstairs lounge/bar which is kinda nice, but drinks are pretty pricey for what you get.

One bonus of this place is that if you can snag an outdoor seat for lunch, brunch or dinner, it is perfect for people watching in the summer.

Date-wise, too much commotion, I wouldn't recommend it.

I have to say, I went here with the family a few years ago and had a nice time but since I don't remember what I ate back then I'm not going to comment on that. Tho I come from a family where we make feijoada a LOT (I'm making it tonight even) so having real, brunch, feijoada was amazinggg. And if you've never had it, you should. That is reason enough to come here (or to another Brazilian place, I guess).

Anyway, I did the "wanna meet for drinks?" "oh, but where should we go?" "um, I guess Coffee Shop?" thing (yes, it's a thing) with my friends last week. We sat outside which was pretty nice and I had already eaten (I'm broke) so I split some herb fries (delicious) and they got food. The food seemed fine, not that impressive, but decent.

The best part tho? The sangria. We got white peach sangria and it was veryyy delicious. Plus, you get an individual little pitcher of sangria for $11 and I got 3 glasses out of mine. Now that's what I call a deal. The waitstaff is not very attentive (as stated by nearly every other person below me) but if you have some time to relax and it's the summer, who doesn't want sangria?

Eh. Great for drinks because the lounge downstairs is fun. Not really recommended for dinner - the food was average at best. The fried calamari was way too chewy (and the sauce was kinda gross) but the seared tuna salad and Cobb salad were decent. While the burgers were fine, they used a weird herb I couldn't recognize to season the fries, which made them very easy to resist (everyone on a diet rejoice!!).
The prices are a bit high considering the quality of food, so if you're looking for a decent meal, skip the Coffee Shop.

I'm a fan of the food.  It's a nice place any conveniently located.  I can definitely feel the vibe that this place sends off.  Out or work or part time models pedaling food for cash.  Most everyone is very pretty, but that's not really the first thing I think about when my stomach is hungry.  I have a feeling if you are relatively attractive you will get a nice spot and decent service.  If you are a woman and attractive there might be a catty situation around the corner.

I've just been for dinner so I don't know much about their bar scene, however by the looks of it seems questionable.  I picture a bunch of pretty girls with mojitos surrounded by testosterone fueled douche bags.  I do have to admit that the whole scene and vibe is amusing.

To the food.  I had the fish and chips with fries and a side of macaroni and cheese.  Everything was great, especially the mac and cheese.  I don't know how they make it, but holy shit is it good.  It has the consistency of velveeta, but it was real cheese!!  The fish was really good too, it was talapia and was fried to perfection and didn't leave the fish too soggy.  The fries are must have.  They are cut like McDonalds fries, but the potatoes are very fresh and they are seasoned very nicely.

Check this place out, but don't judge it by the behavior of the wait staff or even the other customers.  Simply go for the food.

Came here yesterday for lunch/brunch and this is definitely a 4 star lunch spot if you wolf down the burger (add on the bacon and onions) with the herb fries - the feijoida is supposed to be pretty good to. I can see negative reviews if you hit this place up for dinner and/or are not into the crowded loud diner-esque scene. But if you're in the mood for a no frills spot with quick service and a great burger, roll down to union square for a pretty good value.

I came here expecting a brazilian restaurant, with a Brazilian menu and Brazilian people.
Well... That's not what this place is. They do have two or three items that are Brazilian, but if that is why you are coming then go elsewhere...

Expectations aside:
Pro's- it is a cool place and has good music.
International crowd
Good looking wait staff
Open late (4 or 5 am)

Cons- Oily food, pretentious staff, waiters do not know the menu...

Go there for drinks with a group after dinner.

NOT A BRAZILIAN RESTAURANT (IN MY BRAZILIAN OPINION).

Ok, So I have to write because I just came from here again.  I work night in the Nightclub industry and we come here often to get food, the food is ok, never really had a problem with it.  The Service is such a joke, we made bets tonight and tried to word things just right to have an ok meal.  we all got drinks and ordered water, we got the drinks and only a single glass of water for the table.
Every time I come I make a point to order apps, and separate the entrees, and tell them to bring the apps first. It has never happened once.  tonight there were 6 of us.  They sat us at a 4 person table next to a 6 person booth with a reserved sign at 3am on a Tuesday.

We ordered apps, then specified we wanted salads second, then we wanted our entrees last.  Well we sat there with one water between us all, empty mojito glasses for 40 min and then got EVERYTHING  at Once, 3 apps, 4 salads, and 6 entrees on a 4 person table.  IT IS HORRIBLE.

I have never had trouble getting a seat, it is always a weekday after 1am, and the food is always ok, but the service is such a joke, the busboys do all the work.  It is a basic diner atmosphere with a nice built in bar, I see very tall girls working but hardly models, the bartenders were hot from what i could see, I didn't realize that was the shtick there until i read it on yelp.

Pop Quiz:

You're a hostess/waitress at a completely deserted bar/restaurant at 1:30am on a Sunday night. Six people (commonly known as "customers") enter your establishment. Do you:

a) Seat them immediately at the only booth in the restaurant built for six people?
b) Seat them immediately at a booth made for four people, but allow them to pull up two chairs?
c) Seat them immediately at a booth made for four people, refuse to allow them to pull up any chairs due to vaguely remembered and expressed "building codes" and "fire laws", then tell them you cannot seat them at the larger (empty) booth because it is "reserved" (clearly code for "what if a celebrity comes? IT COULD HAPPEN!") until the awkwardness of six people standing around an empty room staring at you , fearful of your bizarre list of codes and regulations, and waiting for a solution becomes too much, and you relinquish the Celebrity Booth?

At the Coffee Shop, the answer is "c".

Bonus points if you got the extra credit write-in: "Be sure to give them zero advance warning as to when the bar portion will stop serving, especially avoid a "last call" or "hey guys, just so you know, the bar is closing in five minutes" in order to maximize frustration when they try to order a second round. Then turn on fluorescent overheads and spotlights at 2:01am on the dot, while they are still eating, in an effort to force them out, Gitmo style."

A+ on your Pop Quiz!
D+ for Coffee Shop!

In every relationship there's a give and take.  You try to make it work to ensure that one person isn't always giving while the other is always taking.  I'm a giver...Coffee Shop is a taker and our relationship is officially over.  I'm boxing up all its stuff and dropping it off.

Two weeks ago, I met a friend there for a late drink.  She arrived first and ordered some food at the bar while she was waiting for me.  When I got there, I took the empty stool next to her and looked the disaffected bartender square in the eye...and waited.  He busied himself doing not much of anything but seemed entirely too "busy" to take my drink order.  Then his little blonde partner in crime did a float-by, but she also couldn't be bothered to take my drink order or even see if I'd like, I don't know...a glass of water, maybe?  After about ten minutes, I stood up and as nicely as possible (which is difficult these days) looked them both in the face and said, "can I maybe get a drink menu or a glass of water, or you know, some service?"  They seemed shocked and a little offended by my request (you mean we can't just stand here and look pretty?) and I was eventually presented with a menu.  I sat there staring at it and then noticed that not one, but both of them were scooping ice using serving glasses before making cocktails...with the neglected metal scoop sitting inches away.  This might not seem like a big deal, but it's a big, big no-no; because I don't know about you, but I don't really like bits of broken glass floating in my drink.  Aside from that, it's in direct violation of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Code.
I informed the bartenders I would not be having a drink because if they couldn't be bothered to get me a drink when I came in, then I wasn't going to be bothered to give them any of my money.
The next day, I called the bar and asked for a manager to complain about my service, or lack thereof, and to inform said manager that the bartenders should be told to use scoops, which are provided!!!, before someone swallows a piece of glass.  I was told the manager was busy, and would have to call me back.  I gave the receptionist, or whomever, my number and waited.  Two days went by...I called THEM back.  I again made it clear that I was a customer with a complaint.  Again, the manager was busy and would have to call back.  Again, I waited and again I called back.
It's been two weeks and I'm still waiting for my call.

n.b. I'm leaving the "Good for" section empty, because as far as I'm concerned, they're good for nothing!

Deccent food and GORGEOUS wait staff - you really have to be one of the "beautiful" people to get good service here - otherwise I'd give it 4 stars.  Most of the staff are models and actors (wannabes too - but all are camera-ready.)

No joke.  Read Laura B.'s hilarious review.  She's right.

If i could give this place 0 stars, I would.
5 of us went in for breakfast saturday morning and they crammed us into the smallest booth possible. the waitress was a complete moron, and although the rumor has it it's all models and actresses working there, i'll beg to differ. i will say though, it proved they weren't REALLY waitresses.

ordered coffee and cream, had to ask for the cream twice before it came. placed our breakfast order at the same time and 4 of us were done eating before the last plate finally made it to the table. we had to ask where it was twice and no one even came back to tell us why the hold up.

manager could care less about the service and i have to say, it was just a bad way to start my morning. don't waste your time unless you want to be disappointed.

Let's get a few things straight about this place. . .

1) It is not a Brazillian restaurant. It is a Brazillian-tinged bar/diner. And a good one at that. If you want to get some genuine Brazilian food here, the only thing I can recommend is to come in for weekend brunch and order the feijoada (delicious).

2) Do not expect the service here to be good. It's almost always overcrowded and they have a bad habit of hiring waitstaff with pretty faces and lackluster customer service skills.

3) A large portion of the patrons here will be pretentious assholes. This is a hip, centrally located bar in Manhattan, not Cheers. What do you expect?

But all criticism aside, the food here really is quite good. I love their meat loaf, love their fries, and for a period of time was addicted to their bok choy-chicken salad. I also a big fan of their sangria. It's not really what you're expecting, but it's damn good. If you've never been here, it's definitely one of those quintessential New York experiences that everybody should have at least once.
