The baked goods are fantastic, try the banana bread! I personally like the ice blended mocha but my mother claims their lattes are great. I usually spend ten or so minutes after I get my drink just browsing through their flower arangements, local specialty card racks, chatting with the other locals and smelling the candles.
The flowers are a bit...scratch that...pretty pricey but seeing as they're the only decent flower shop in the area I guess they can do that.
There are only a few parking spots in their "Private Lot" which can sometimes be a problem, but I usually walk anyways. The coffeeshop baristas are usually pretty friendly and the coffee is reliably tasty!
I'm with Maile P's review.... I can't believe people think this is good coffee! I would love to support a local coffee shop, but I was so disappointed when I got a cafe au lait here... and my boyfriend got a mocha. Just crappy coffee, and my au lait had no foam. wtf.
I'll be sticking with Peet's and Intelligentsia..... that's some serious coffee, with some serious baristas!
It's a bummer that good coffee cannot be found in Playa... Tanners and this place.... bummer.
It's really hard to find a place with good coffee, all I have around where I live is Starsucks, Seattle's Worst, and the Coffee Bean (I'm not clever enough to think of another name for Coffee Bean).
I came to Playa del Rey, visiting my sister, and we walked to Felicia's. The coffee was smooth and well brewed, which is all I could ask for from a simple cup of coffee. As my sister mentioned in her review below me, the zucchini bread was awesome. The vibe there was also friendly and cute. Now I'm jealous of my sis cuz she can come here whenever she wants.
I agree with Christine L. The coffee's okay, but the atmosphere makes the place barely tolerable. The British barista that works in the morning acts as if she's doing you a favor by serving you - unless you're one of her 'friends.'
The place is amok with people bringing human sized Labs, terriers, etc. I actually saw said barista pet a dog and then make a cup of coffee. Several weeks ago I was in there and one of the barista's buddies who was holding her chihuahua in her hands, put the dog down and a boxer snapped at her and it was an all out doggie show-down. When I made a comment it was like I was the one in the wrong... then and there I decided I'll not go back there.
Seriously, are you people kidding me? It's disgusting - put your damn dog OUTSIDE WHERE THEY BELONG.
THIS PLACE SHOULD BE VISITED BY THE FOOD AND BEV DEPT. Either that, or charge kennel fees. Gross
I can't believe all the good reviews for this horrific coffee shop!!!!
They made nice flowers arrangements and they are not too expensive.
my sister really enjoyed the coffee here, but i was a little disappointed that the only tea options they had were chai and iced (reason for 3 rather than 4 stars). The zucchini bread was pretty tasty though.
Quick review for both:
Flowers By Felicia. Not cheap, but good quality. I've had to place a couple of wire orders through here and everything worked out well. Selection could be better -- the place is tiny -- but the flowers hold up (my father is a florist back in Ohio). They're the only place to buy greeting cards outside grocery and drug stores in the immediate area and could capitalize on it with better selection. But overall, a good store and solid service.
Coffee Garden. Great inexpensive coffee/tea and excellent baked goods (better than the nearby Tanner's in my estimation). Go for the raspberry scones. The drink to get is the Foglifter, which is strong black coffee with either a single or double shot of espresso thrown in the mix. I've actually gotten the shakes from this. Always good service, though it can get a little backed up in the morning. Nice sitting area: stools that face Pershing and a big rectangular kitchen table. There's a corner with toys for kids, though those without iPods will wish it didn't get so loud.
5 stars to a small cozy coffee shop that I can walk to! The chai latte is what I tried first, along with some baked goods - all delicious and it didn't break my bank. I WILL be going back (all too much-a-much now that I've discovered it) to try the rest of the coffee and goodies.
Also has greeting cards, small gifts and a floral shop attached - in case you have the need to be gifty.
note: cash is preferred; prepare to buy more than $5 worth if you're using a card.
Great food but pricey flowers. Coffee Garden & Flowers is definitely worth checking out, but only purchase flowers there in desperation due to the prices. Still, as Mia pointed out, they are the only florist in the Pershing stretch, and their roses saved me on multiple formal occasions in high school. (It's worth noting that there was once another shop down on Culver, but they may have closed since I was last there.) The owners are also very friendly and helpful.
I love local mom and pop places. Felicia is the nice lady who owns the store and I've only met her once out of the millions of times that I've been there. But her staff is friendly and when I did see her, she was cleaning up and sweeping her shop. with time to make me my fave almond roca latte w/soy and have conversations about the syrup. I'm not usually a fan of bran and their low fat blueberry bran muffin is moist and delicious.
The coffee is great ... service is great ... terrific neighborhood place to hang out, grab a cup of coffee ... and best of all ... find some fantastic gifts and flowers! Felicia also does wonderful arrangements for special events, company holiday parties ... sending flowers to your friends ... and they are always beautiful!! And Felicia is very helpful and artistic in designing your arrangements with you, which is a rare treat to find these days.
