11 reviews for Coffee & More
I came here to study on a Tuesday. It sure beats the heat! At first glance it feels like Sufficient Grounds from Berkeley, CA. The "crowd" (even though there were few people there at the time) was diverse: a guy lounging with a newspaper, a group of coworkers, and a lady working on her lappy.
My friend and I felt obligated to order a few drinks before using their free wifi. He got a an iced white mocha and I got an italian soda. Both were delicious!
Then when we were hungry we shared a chicken salad sandwich and it was also delicious! Its cute cause she delivered it right to our seat :)
All that liquid went straight to my bladder. Thank goodness they have a restroom for customers only (you have to retrieve the key from the front counter). It was very clean. It is too bad they close at 6pm because then I would stay here longer.
Not sure if I should review Coffee & More, since I didn't actually order anything, but my S.O., friends, and I tried going here after a too noisy dinner at DishDash Saturday so that we could actually talk.
I was completely overwhelmed by a strong cleaning supply smell. While I appreciate that it was probably very clean inside, I don't know about you, but that's not what I want to smell when I'm about to have coffee and dessert.
My friends and S.O. would have stayed if I didn't want to leave.
I'm willing to try again another day and hope that they didn't decide to clean right before my arrival.
I'm basically reviewing this against the Bean Scene, which is the other coffee shop on Murphy St.
* Much better coffee drinks - no scalding, more flavorful
* Exponentially better customer service than the Bean Scene - these people are super-pleasant and will actually joke around with you
* Vibe is more low-key, and the place is a bit darker and certainly more empty on the whole
* Hours are kinda crappy (closes at 6P, not open on Sundays)
Haven't tried the foodstuffs/desserts, so I can't say much about those. Definitely my favorite cafe in the neighborhood, though.
Great Place to have a delicious pastry, tasty coffee, and most important friendly staff. I and a co worker were waited on a sweet person named Molly.
She was friendly and efficient and had a superior calm demeanor. This is a great place that cares about their customers.
We will be back again with more co workers to enjoy great tasting coffee at a great price and a very kind and friendly hostess/ server.
Becky, Buddy,
A good place to drop by and pick up a coffee drink. Not sure I would stay there to drink it- the shop is slightly disorganized and looks sort of temporary, but has been like that for quite some time.
Good coffee drinks at a good price- you can't beat that. I usually stop by on my way out of the farmer's market on Sat mornings.
I'm not anti-megacorporation or anything (well, actually, I kinda am), but I'd much rather support a local cafe than a Starbucks. I do go to Peets sometimes, and I'll certainly go to Starbucks if its the only choice. Having a choice, however, leads me to go a tiny bit out of my way for my fancy coffee.
The staff at Coffee & More are super-friendly--they should probably be wearing capes--and although its not an upscale place I do like the space. I park in the lot behind and go through the back door, which doesn't look like it could go anywhere, but it does. (Maybe I'm giving away my parking secret?) I get the Latte & More, usually accompanied by a croissant or biscotti. Mmmmmmmmmmm. About the same price as the Starbucks, so not a deal but not a ripoff either.
UPDATE 8/31/2007 - Lisa (the manager of C&M) had introduced a cold-brewed coffee drink she calls The Toddy and I have to say that it is pretty good. Tried it the other day with some hazelnut syrup and chocolate and it's pretty addictive.

UPDATE 7/6/2007 - Wifi problems were probably on my end, as my new laptop connects more quickly and the fact that they have 2 access points means one is pretty much always going to grab. Check out Javad in the back room with his new waterproof keyboard if you're there at lunchtime...

UPDATE 6/13/2007 - This is definitely my new hangout for laptop nerdiness. Excellent flow-through breeze in the afternoon, really nice people working there, and nice regulars. The wifi is flaky sometimes, which I haven't figured out quite yet, but sometimes working offline is good...
--
UPDATE 5/31/2007 - I'm sitting in the place right now. Wireless has been improved, and the smoking situation is not worth dinging them for... I mean, people go outside and smoke, the wind blows, that's life.
I tried a mango smoothie here yesterday and liked it enough to have a mango-strawberry smoothie today. Nice on a warm day, and sort of a meal in a glass. Good stuff, served with a smile.
Also, I think this place is generally more comfortable than the other place down the street. I think this is my new favorite extra-home-office spot.
--
I'm knocking off half a star because I'm being a non-smoker noise-maker here... it was the wind and the open doors, granted, but the one or two people who were working there were hanging out in front taking a smoke break and the smoke was drawn into the place. Bleh.
That said, there are several noteworthy points:
- random seating is less crowded than The Bean Scene many doors away, makes the place feel more open, good for a discussion that isn't necessarily public
- It's at the end of the street on the corner, so it feels very open with the windows and it's a reasonably big place.
- The server working on the day I was there was quite nice.
- I didn't try the food, just a coffee, but they seem to have a nice selection of non-coffee items (I'll try at some point)
The other half-star goes for their wireless. I was there with laptop and the wifi signal was dismal. Add to this a bogus AP that had a stronger signal but which wasn't actually routing traffic (or didn't appear to be), and the lower-strength AP would drop me frequently. On re-connect I would sometimes pick up The Firehouse Grill across the street and its signal strength was dismal as well.
If you're looking for a smaller crowd and can work offline (or not-work, even better), this place is just fine. I should sit in the back half of the place to avoid the smoke next time, or just take up smoking and be done with it.
The biggest draw for this place is it's close proximity to the Caltrain station. Also, there are a lot of outlets for your 'puter. I actually prefer the layout to Bean Scene, but the coffee is really not very good. I had an espresso drink and it tasted pretty lousy.
That being said, I find myself going here a lot. I don't know why. Now that I go so much, I find the staff friendlier than the Bean Scene.
I came here yesterday as I walked around the farmer's market and waited for the caltrain. The Chai Soy Latte was the best I ever had, and the place is not as crowded as the bean scene. It was a nice change for me. I definitely will come back.
Not a bad little place. The service is fast and friendly and it's right on the corner, about 300 feet from the Caltrain Station. Perfect for those mornings when there's only 5 minutes before the train comes. Mmm...mocha.
Nice location and generally lots of available seats; a bit more open than Bean Scene, which gets crowded at times.
However, the downside is the espresso, which typically comes without a trace of the all-important crema. For me, that is at least two stars off.
