Neighborhood: SOMAi am a big fan of cocoon!
i was desperate for a wax last thursday and since it was so super last minute i couldn't get into my regular spots. i called cocoon and the woman at the front desk was awesome -- so incredibly accommodating, even moving some things around to get me in at a time that worked (1 hour later, mind you.)
but the best was sarah. she is amazing. my wax was awesome and not at all painful plus she was really cool to boot. i'll definitely be going back all the time.
**** update
I have been going back to Sarah for waxing and it is just as good everytime.
Last week i went into Cocoon for a mani/pedi and a little relaxation. It is the best mani/pedi i've had in awhile...the polish is flawless and the service was quick and friendly. I had to park at a meter and the woman at the front desk fed the meter for me when the hour was up. So nice! Cocoon is top notch!
*** update, again, 5/16.
ok, so i went in for that mani/pedi on april 25th. that's three weeks ago, people. it is, hands down, the best mani pedi i've ever had. it's been 3 weeks and my toes are still perfect. not a single chip in the polish. it's crazy. i almost don't believe it myself. my fingernails are still painted and barely chipping. this is huge, given i am washing my hands and dishes and baby bottles about 100 times a day (the life having a 10 week old baby). seriously. i'm so amazed. i will be going to cocoon from now on for my mani pedis. the best!
Got a great facial from Sarah a few months back-- very well-done, I felt so relaxed and at-ease afterward. She's very nice and outgoing and is also the owner. She's very professional and got her experience working at another spa in Potrero Hill. The only downside is there's no locks on the doors in case you want to make good on all the naughty thoughts you have about all the cute girls working here! I also had a yoga class from Danielle and that was great as well.
I got an amazing spray tan here today - totally professional and I look golden and wonderful. I can't wait to show it off at the wedding I'm going to this weekend.
due largely to my fears of (a) spending money, and (b) being emasculated in public, i had never been to a spa before, not even for a massage, but was convinced by a friend to try this one. i'm pretty sure they're used to boys coming in for their first time, because i was not immediately shunned for making jokes about "facials" (this was before i realized that i was the one receiving the facial, and promptly shut up), and no one there suggested that i was less of a man for coming in. =) so, a completely relaxing hour of my face & head being massaged later in a comfy darkened room by a sweet, friendly, funny & hot girl, i was pretty sure i wasn't less of a man, but so relaxed that i didn't think about it too much.
anyway, things i liked: 1) super comfy. 2) everyone was really friendly. 3) i'm not sure if all spas are like this, but all the girls who worked there range from really cute to smokin' hot. 4) i loved the space the spa is located in, with super high ceilings, exposed beams, and lots of room. 5) Sarah R. gives amazing facial. :) 6) i was not given shit for not having shaved ahead of time, even though i realized that would have made life easier for the facial giver; totally let me slide. 7) there were more dudes there than i anticipated.
actually, this was both a good and bad thing. i mean, it made me feel like i was not the only boy who failed the masculinity test, but i think i imagined at some point that i would be surrounded by trophy wives chatting about their butlers, with jewelry weighing down their extremities, and i imagined getting slightly shunned (yet ogled, in a slumming-it sort of way) by the bourgeoisie, who would then more or less haughtily allow me to remain in their presence as they had their bodies done to their husbands specifications. sort of field research into how the uber rich pass their idle time and ready themselves for procreation.
ANYway, the facial was amazing, i am still more or less a man, and i would do dirty things to any of the girls who work there. however, next time, i believe i will be going for massage. having your face massaged is nice, but how about the whole body as well?
I spent a couple of hours at Cocoon two weeks ago - got a fab mani-pedi and a spray tan. Everything was totally relaxing and clean and cozy and the services themselves were outstanding. I really enjoyed my time there -- here are a couple of reasons why:
Spray tan by D (short for Daniele) was quick, even, and remarkably natural. When I expressed "Dancing with the Stars" spray tan anxiety, she laughed out loud and assured me all would be well. She was right - I really looked as if I'd been lolling around naked on an island for a few days - and the color lasted a week. Nice work!
The mani-pedi area is sleek and industrial but still comfy and welcoming - lots of natural light and natural textures. The chairs recline. Yeah, you read it right. They RECLINE. So you can totally check out with champagne and gossip mags or just melt into a puddle with the hand and foot massage.
Did I mention the champagne? Bottomless glass of not-cheap champagne is yours for the asking. If you prefer, there's still or sparkling water, or tea. All gratis.
This is my new go-to day spa. Highly recommended.

It had been 6 weeks since my last eyebrow wax and I was in dire need of shaping, waxing and tinting. I called other places in the hood and most were able to see me in another 4 weeks or they did the waxing, but not the tinting.
I was looking for a one-stop shop and I found them at Cocoon! Sarah D. was able to get me in the next day!
She did a bang up job on my brows and waxing. Then the cherry on top of it all...a glass of champagne in the middle of my treatment! Yes!
Cocoon not only accommodated my work/life schedule, but they also were so friendly in making me feel comfortable for a first time visitor. I'll be back soon and to totally check out the mani/pedi services. I can't wait!

I've been going to Cocoon for some time now and I have to say I really, really love this one stop shop spa and yoga studio. The only thing they are missing is a hair dresser.
The mani/pedi is by far the best I have ever had. I usually get French polish on my toes. I got my last paint 3 weeks ago and they still look perfect. The technicians listen to what you want and have always asked me what shape I want my nails before cutting them.
The Spray Tan. Sarah R did my spray tan and I was so happy with how it turned out. She mixed some colors together that she thought would suit my skin tone better. It looked so natural, even my boyfriend liked it.
The Facials are so relaxing. I have fallen asleep every time. My skin feels so good.
The Shop, has some really nice jewelry, kids clothes, hats, woman's clothing and much more.
Yoga classes with Danielle are awesome too.
Without doubt the best Mani pedi experience in town.
I love this place, comfy chairs, great service, champagne and home made chocolates.

When your boyfriend says to you, "Let's get manicures and pedicures together, find a place you want to go to that serves champagne", then please stop pinching yourself because you'll just end up with bruises of disbelief like I did. Sure, you get some odd looks from people when you tell them on your weekend agenda includes getting a mani/pedi with your SO, but be sure to remind them that their nails look like crap and they're just jealous that he actually takes CARE of himself. So there. :)
I remembered there being a thread about it, and used the Search function to find it--thank you Christina S! (http://www.yelp.com/to...) So I went to their website and had Rob pick out which spa service he wanted (which was the express ones, but I managed to convince him of something different), and I made the appointment.
If it's something I haven't learned yet from all the things that he and I do together, it's that if I give him the specific time for an event, we'll always be at least 15 minutes late. This was also the case, but thankfully we had a motorcycle and his aggressive riding capabilities (which really is only good for when you want your life flashed before your eyes), and arrived less than 10 minutes late and right in front of the day spa. Success!
They were super nice at reception, and very accomodating when we had to explain that I woke up Saturday morning with a bloodied heel and therefore would not be getting a pedicure, just a manicure. We sat down on individual reclining leather couches, finally being able to sit down again (we're kind of lazy). I was relaxed but since I've had manicures ever since I was about 10 years old (given to me by a 10 year old vietnamese boy, and WOW could he paint nails), so she seemed a bit inexperienced to me. The movements weren't very smooth or flowing, and it was a tad rushed.
The part where they started the massage was where I got comfortable, except when it was my left hand's turn I had to awkwardly position it over to the side for her. The arm rest for my hand was literally an arm rest--I wish they would have had swing out arm rests with a comfortable spot for the arm and a hard spot for the hand on each side. That way you don't have to worry about whether or not the water with flower essence your fingers are soaking in is going to spill all over your lap.
The salt scrub was nice--nothing like getting dead skin cells off your skin to start off. Then a mint icy-hot like masque for your arms that really only did the icy part. It was like freezer burn! I was super uncomfortable the whole time, because it was not only cold outside, but it was kind of cold inside, and that just made it worse. Though when they wiped it off with a hot towel, the relief was almost instantaneous. Then came the hot parraffin wax and I just sat there, almost passing out from being so relaxed.
In the end, I opted for just a top coat on my nails. They were too short anyways and I've been down the road already with acrylic addiction--let's just say that it gets about as costly as heroin and I can't afford to be an acrylic junkie right now.
Mmm...now that I think about it...my hands are STILL as smooth as they were yesterday after my manicure!! sahWEET.
However, we didn't manage to get any champagne, or strawberries/brownies like they said they had on their website--which is a shame, because we like to start drinking early.
By the way, nothing is more embarrassing than actually taking more than 10 seconds to figure out how to open the door. SRSLY.

This place is without air-conditioning.
Thus, on a particularly sunny and warm day in San Francisco, the central room for this day spa can be quite insufferable. Thank goodness for the iced tea that the receptionist passed around. I totally needed that cool-down, or I would have melted away. The main room for this day spa consists of eight leather recliners; however, even though I booked my party of 12 at least a week and a half ahead of time, they were only able to get four technicians to work on Friday. Most of us opted for the spa pedicure, which included a 10-minute leg/foot massage. I must say, I wasn't very impressed with this leg/foot massage since my person applied such little pressure to my leg/foot. Ah well. But, I do love my toenails at the moment - my technician totally did a great job of putting my nail polish on and putting the other stuff on there to seal in the color. Score!
Other refreshments that were available - water and champagne. They also had strawberries and miniature cupcakes to tempt us; alas, I wasn't hungry enough to attempt either when I went.
All in all, the service was pleasant; I just wish that the massage could have been stronger.
Just had a facial here this weekend by sarah l. and it was great! I've always felt a little dread when getting facials because the extractions are usually so painful. Sarah was great at making me feel super pampered and relaxed though, and the extractions took less than a minute near the end of my hour. She also gave me an awesome neck and shoulder massage that was just what I needed and totally unexpected. I left feeling refreshed and relaxed - one of the best facials I've ever had!

I've been here a couple of times and have had great experiences every time; in fact I need to make an appointment for a mani/pedi STAT. The staff is friendly, attentive and professional. The atmosphere is amazing and very soothing! The pedicure chairs are large, soft and comfy recliners, which you can sit in them all day. I feel so rested and relaxed when my treatments are done. If you are looking for a new spa in San Francisco with reasonable prices, you should definitely give Cocoon Urban Day Spa a chance, you won't regret it!
Cocoon has topnotch service and a very unique and elegant decor. I had a relaxing time there while getting a pedicure, during which I was served bottomless champagne and offered chocolates. The chair was definitely pleasing to the bones, but coming up from a recline was a bit of a jolt that I blame on the chair manufacturer. The experience was superb. As for my toenails, I've had better service elsewhere.

I am a self described urban hiller. One should note that the best way to grasp what that means would be to combine the notion of a metrosexual with that of a white trash affluent yuppie. I exist in this paradoxical grey area of life and, frankly, I thrive in it. That's why I will sit on my lavish leather couch in my boxers eating delivered pizza and contemplate getting a manicure with my SO as I feed my dog scraps in between GTA4 multiplayer games. This way I can come up with the idea of getting a high end mani-pedi (see- I even pickup on the terms -wink wink-) under the guise of just being along for the ride. It's a win-win!
So of course the appointment is for 10AM on a sunday, and of course we leave the house at 9:58AM... in a mad rush (i thought we were going to a relaxing spa?!?) on my motorcycle and luckily blindly finding perfect parking right around the corner from Cocoon. It was one of those mad dashes that was filled with making just the right calls and getting there minimally late.... to find they didn't care if we were late. SWEET.
My friend suffered a horrendous fashion injury breaking in her new kate spade shoes so we upgraded our manicures to the Cocooning Signature Mani from the ultimate one and canceled the pedicures. The space itself is nice and relaxing.. Tho I did question why they white washed all the once beautiful natural wood beams. We were the first customers of the morning so everyone was relaxed and still setting up for the day. I was handed some tea of my choice, seated in a nice leather chair, my feet were put up, and a pillow was placed in my lap (which was nice because I had forgotten to zip my pants- which i seem to do a lot... yikes). Since my friend didn't get a pillow put in her lap- I now wonder if the lady did it to preserve my virtue. The service included a quick filing and buffing, a salt rub on the top of my hand, and some kind of minty freezing stuff from my elbow to my wrist and then plastic wrapped which was somewhat uncomfortable because I had chugged my tea and was now nauseous. I sat there for an eternity wondering if I was going to have to run to the bathroom that I didn't know the location of with my green freeze burning arms wrapped in plastic to maybe puke in the toilet if I was lucky. But before I could process this and make moves for the expulsion of tea the lady returned and removed the vile substance with a warm towel... ahhh... all better. Then I received a nice 10 minute massage- and boy my PS3 ravaged thumbs really enjoyed the relief from that. We finished off with a plastic bag full of lavender (i think) scented paraffin wax. That was the highlight of the experience. It was nice and warm and proved to be a very relaxing contrast to the green goop. After the lady removed the plastic I had baby like soft hands with which to ravage anew with my pent nervous energy nail biting habits all over again. My hands were reborn! I did like this place. The few points of improvement my friend and I decided would make this a better experience would be to have the lady move to the side she is working on instead of moving my hand to her side- which was a bit clunky feeling and the reason I chugged my tea thus nearly making me puke. Also- where are the mimosas? WHERE ARE THE MIMOSAS? I saw the glasses for them... sadly they remained empty. Also- have fun getting out of the place with their door. Cocoon- Lord of the rings called and wants their door back.

I just went here today for a spa mani/pedi and it was fabulous. The spa is very comfortable and unpretentious. The people working there are very friendly and attentive, constantly offering the customers champagne, strawberries or brownies among other things. I love that the manicurists speak English (mine did anyway). I hate when they don't speak English because I tend to go way too long between pedicures and don't like feeling paranoid that they are talking about how busted my feet look. My manicurist did a great job and I would definitely go here again. I didn't try any of their other services, but their yoga room looked beautiful.

I first started coming here in February, and in dire need of a good brow place. And I've found it!
I worked with Sarah D. and she's awesome. She's very friendly and really seems to care about my brows. When I first met her, she told me that my brows were uneven, and they were. I just thought they were like that naturally. But it seems as if maybe they were done poorly in the past, and I've just kept that up over the years. So she put me on a brow fixer upper plan to grow my eyebrows out so that she could fix them. And she did. My brows are now beautiful and even, and I will continue to come here to get my brow wax fix.
I just need to make some time to try one of their other services out too.
I love going to Cocoon! It is my special treat right here in the City. The staff at Cocoon is very professional and down to earth. I like that I can go treat myself at a nice day spa without any pomp and circumstance. I love the products they use, too. I always feel relaxed and revived when I leave.
I went here for the first time last week. It was a smaller space than expected, but it was cute. I got the Ultimate Mani/Pedi. Their mani/pedi was excellent from the filing to the nail painting to the timed massage. The technicians really took their time and I loved it.
One star off, since the space was SO hot. Granted, it was an unusually hot day for SF, but they need to get some fans in there or something. The poor technicians were weeping through their pores (but they did it with a smile)! I also heard from a friend that during the winter, they give clients blankets, because it gets so cold. Is this true??
I'll probably go back, because I loved the service, but they need to do something about ventilation.
I got a pedicure here last week and it is easily my new favorite place. It's slightly more expensive that what I'm used to but definitely worth the money because it's not a 20-minute quickie - they soak your feet for quite a while, scrub your feet and use an exfoliating rub, warm up the lotion and give you a great foot massage - and they offer you champagne too! I got the spa pedi which I think was $35 - worth it for sure. Can't wait to go back and try their other services. Oh - and their boutique has some really great stuff but beware - the prices aren't cheap and drinking champagne and then shopping is a bad idea for me - not sure about you!

This might be TMI, but seriously had the most enjoyable brazilian wax here. Sarah is awesome! Tristin at the front desk is awesome.! My new favorite place to go for a waxy wax during lunch- only a 5-10 minute walk from my office in the Financial District. I'd give this place 10 stars if I could!

I gotta say this place is definitely growing on me. After a couple shaky visits, my last visit was divine. The blanket to cover up was a nice touch, very warm and cozy and management here is very nice. The Cocoon signature mani/pedi is definitely worth it - extra massage, scrub, mask and paraffin.
Vicky gave the best pedicure. Really deep massage, super thorough foot scrub and she even could tell I run and cut my nails extra short! Definitely coming back to find her.

Rincon Hill residents and office workers rejoice! Cocoon urban day spa offers the massage, skin care, yoga, nail care, and waxing you want and deserve!
Tristin greeted me at the front desk with a friendly smile. The atmosphere is very relaxing - the lights are dim just so and the music, candles, and scents are a delight to the senses. Sarah La Shell knows how to make a face feel great!
I'm still a little old school in that I use the good 'ole razor blade for shaving each workday morning. I go at it pretty haphazardly, luckily not cutting myself too often. The Men's Institute Facial ($100) was sooooo relaxing, lying under a warm blanket, that I felt comfortably tingly all over. It is just the treat for a face that often gets short shrift in the haste to get to work on time 5 days a week.
I'm definitely heading back for another Men's Institute Facial in the future ... maybe a Christmas gift for myself? I'm also looking forward to setting an appointment to get a massage.
I asked, and they do offer gift certificates ....
Tell your friends at Orrick, Gap, Google, Schwab, Wells Fargo, and so on to head over to Cocoon to leave their worries at the door and to feel great.

You must treat yourself to yoga and a pedicure at Cocoon!
I just went to the beginner yoga class followed by the Cocoon Signature pedicure. My feet look and feel fantastic! The paraffin dip and leg massage was wonderful. I know you might be thinking the price ($55) is a little high for a pedicure, but it's soooooooo worth it!
Could there be a better commercial business next door? No.
I walked in on my way home one day last weekend, it was their soft opening for friends and family and I had no idea. But, they were nice enough to give me a tour of the place and make me a complimentary appointment for being a neighbor - could not get any better, or so I thought.
I scheduled my gratis pedicure for Sunday and they told me to bring a friend, I did.
When we arrived at 3 on Sunday we were greeted with smiles and "welcome backs". Then they started giving us the champagne with strawberries and sweets and fresh seasonal fruits, and the trouble started. And by trouble I mean pure, unadulterated pleasure.
Their signature pedicure takes an hour and is worth more than the 24 or so bucks they normally charge for it. I have honestly never had my feet quite so pampered and I am no stranger to mani/pedis.
The yoga studio was beautiful and if I didn't work such crazy hours I would have already been there and be able to review a class.
I will most definitely be returning to this spot as it is the best I have found, not only in this city, but ever!
The owners are two younger females and the feminist inside me is really into supporting women-owned and operated businesses, so I guess there's that too :)

I'm also in the group of folks THRILLED to see a day spa in Rincon Hill. Honestly I was dying for a nail chop shop but Cocoon is far superior to that! I live around the corner and headed over yesterday to finally check it out. The space is absolutely lovely. The made it warm and inviting but modern feeling.
I had their standard "spa" mani/pedi and am very happy with the care & attention to my nails that they paid. The water your footsies soak in (and hands later) has flower petals in it, which is a lovely & pretty touch. The scents in all the scrubs and lotions are delightful - not too floral but just a bit intoxicating. The chairs a super comfy and cleanliness was top notch.
The entire staff was friendly and helpful. The little shop has some cute Mary Green (yay!!!) undies and other goodies.
PLUS they offer you champagne AND a brownie while you are having your nails done. Gotta love that!
I'll look forward to not only trying their other services, but checking out the yoga classes!

Rincon hill finally has a beauty spot and it's tops. Many years of testing out mani/pedis i found the perfect place and it's so close to home.
I was a bit early and there was a significant time gap between the pedicure/manicure and massage...with excellent customer service in mind - they comped a premium treatment. nice. super friendly and attentive staff.
lounging in the big comfy chairs i napped as the pros took care of my hands and feet. they wrap you in this super warm blanket...hence cocoon, dip your hands and feet in rose water. they use top products that smell nice. all the tools are sterilized and individually wrapped. the foot bath is in a beautiful bowl a nice touch and takes away any anxiety about drain hygiene. the environment is relaxing (music a bit cliche), clean, modern and you feel like it's all about you there.
the massage was one of the absolute best ever (better than Norstrom, Chakra and Club One). i'll be back for a treatment by Kristen for sure.
they also offer yoga...haven't tried it yet, but the space is so nice i'll give it a go this week.

Simple, good people, phenomenal service - what more could you ask for? I love Cocoon - and I'm as picky as they come.
I love the simplicity of the operation - they are so friendly and unpretentious, yet make you feel like royalty. After only one or two times visiting Cocoon, they knew my name and made me feel like I was an old client. They don't have fancy vibrating spa chairs with whirlpools - they make every foot tub by hand. They add the water, flowers/herbs to a fresh tub each time.
The genuinely care about giving good service. A mani/pedi starts with an offering of champagne or tea, and goes so far as to provide blankets when your feet are soaking in a tub. This isn't a rush job - you're paying good money for a mani/pedi and they are going to give your money's worth. I had a split toe nail, and without asking they applied a glue and acrylic to my toe nail that allowed it to heal while looking spectacular. They aren't in a hurry to rush you out of your chair to herd the next round of clients in either - they encourage you to stay as long as you want and relax.
The massages are wonderful - the atmosphere is so relaxing. And unlike most places in the City, they generally have same day openings.
The waxing is great too. Sarah gave me the best shaped eyebrows of my life. Again, they really take their time - it's not a rush job. My friend loves their bikini waxes too - she says she never has ingrown hairs like she's had in the past with other waxings.
All in all, I can't say enough nice things. It's a highly professional, wonderful operation that still maintains a great mom and pop feel with the high level of customer service. I'll be going back time and time again.
call me extremely partial because I practically live here, but the yoga here is unbelievable..every time I am able to take a class, I need to pinch myself because every time is fantastic. i feel personal improvement so quickly because there is so much interaction between the students and the instructor..it is very comfortable and the space is stunning. cocoon por vida!!!!!!
So one rainy day I called to make a same day appointment (same hour)- the lady was very friendly and found an appointment for me. The place is very adorable and the people working there are very nice. Big leather recliners, comfy pillow and blanket and hot tea! Receipe for de-stress! The best part is that you are not rushed to move out of the chair for some one else. After my nails were done- I was encouraged to lounge in the chair, was given more hot tea and magazines! It was a great experience. I had the mani-pedi combo- while the results were nice, I think that for the price the massage should have been longer (which is why I did not give them the 5th star). But it is a great escape if you need a reason to lay back in the chair and read magazines or not do anything.
(Also, it should be a no cellphone zone! The lady in the next chair was on her crackberry the whole time- How freakin' important are you that you cannot unplug for even 15-30 min?? just chill people.)

I also was fortunate enough to get to visit Cocoon prior to opening on Wednesday...and absolutely loved my pedicure. The interior of the spa is gorgeous - modern and warm executed tastefully. The chairs were comfortable, the customer service was impeccable and the pedicure was everything I could have hoped for. I definitely am suggesting that if you go in for a pedicure...splurge for the paraffin...it feels wonderful!
I wish I lived closer because the yoga studio looks great too.
I definitely will be heading back!

It won't officially open until Wednesday (10/3/07), but I'm proud to be the first to spread the good news about a welcome addition to Rincon Hill. Cocoon is a little gem of a day spa, located on the second floor of what used to be a computer store opposite the Metropolitan towers on 1st Street between Folsom and Harrison. Owners Sarah and Danielle go to great pains to make you feel at home, greeting you with a beverage and nibbles (cookies and berries this afternoon) as you arrive.
I had the house pedicure, a blissful hour's worth of herbal-scented soaking, trimming, buffing, massage (heavenly as performed by Joanna), paraffin and polish that left my habitually calloused feet soft as a baby's bottom (a bit of hyperbole, but they did feel pretty soft).
They have comfy lounge chairs, pillows and mini-comforters to snuggle in, and the minimalist contemporary decor is tasteful and classy. In addition to other nail salon services, they will be holding yoga classes in the back room. There's a small selection of merchandise--lotions, makeup, lingerie and the like. Prices seemed fair: My one-hour top-of-the-line pedicure goes for $50, and its manicure counterpart is $35.
The place is small compared to others in the neighborhood (ZaZa on Second Street, for example). But it feels intimate and friendly, and since I live in the loft development next door I am looking forward to becoming a regular. As Rincon Hill is inundated with high-end high-rise condo developments, we longtime residents should at least benefit from the arrival of neighborhood retail and consumer services the area so badly needs.Welcome to the 'hood, Cocoon!
