This place has one of the most delicious roti pratas. The roti is perfectly cooked and the sauce is delish with it. Not sure if they still have it, but there might be $1 rotis on Weds. Their curries are decent too.
Don't get the hainan chicken. Not great.

I'M NOT SURPRISED THAT THIS PLACE IS LABELED CLOSED.
Everything about it was bad from the service to the food. The Coconut Fried Chicken was THE WORST thing I've seen on a plate. I'm not a fan of wasting food but when it came to this dish, I just had to cut my losses. The service was unbelievable. I seriously felt invisible as I stood there waiting to be seated. No, to even be acknowledged! -

Terrible...
This place use to be decent to eat at but my experience today was terrible.
I got a few dishes that I usually go with and here is my experience.
Roti Prata = The sauce was watered down and they barely gave us any.
Green curry chicken = The chicken was bland and you could tell that it's been frozen for quite some time. The sauce had no flavor.
Pad thai = I don't know how you butcher the easiest dish in the world. This thing was bland and the seafood was super dry.
Tom yam soup = This soup came out cold and when we requested it to be heated up. The waiter looked at us crazy.
Basil beef = This was the only dish that tasted half way decent. No complaints on this one.
The service was terrible and the waitress looked like she hated her job. I'll probably never come back to this place every again.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Union City, CA
Had a couple of roti that were pretty good, but nothing to get excited about.
The Green Curry Chicken and Pineapple Fried Rice were both fairly bland. I wouldn't order either one again.
At the start, the teenaged server offered to get us drinks. Since the sign outside indicated it was a Thai restaurant, I ordered Thai Iced Coffee. She told me, "We don't have Thai Iced Coffee. We do have Malaysian Iced Coffee." I asked if it is similar to Thai Iced Coffee. She said, "We don't have Thai Iced Coffee." I said, "I understand that. I'm asking if the Malaysian Iced Coffee is similar to Thai Iced Coffee." She responded, "I said we don't have Thai Iced Coffee, so how would I know?" So I ordered iced water, and it was probably the best decision of the night. -

I went on a Sunday with my cousins at 9:45PM, and it was packed with people.
Their menu is detailed with plenty of options. Good! I was struggling on what i wanted to order.
The restaurant is clean & the food channel kept us entertained while we ate our food.
We ordered chicken chow fun, fried tofu, and the rendang beef.
Fried tofu: so good! it was so soft.
Chicken chow fun: just okay. it kept my tummy full, so that's all that matters.
Rendang beef: just okay. i honestly can't remember my impressions of it, indicating that it was so-so.
Portions are medium sized.
For drinks I ordered the mango iced tea. GET IT GET IT! there were baby squared slices of mango at the bottom of the drink and they were so good! i asked for a refill.
Fresh coconut juice tasted fresh. I liked how it was still in its coconut form and you had to drink it from the top. I'm not a fan of coconut in general, so i can't really hate on it.
The service was great! our waitress was friendly and quick, which was convenient because we had to go home soon.Listed in: Find me in Milpitas!

Delicious Thai, Malaysian, and Singaporean food!
I don't know what Malaysian or Signaporean food is supposed to taste like, but this place has really delicious food and definitely sets the bar. The dishes come with a lot of vegetables, which make them taste hearty and healthy. They have fun drinks too.
I recommend:
Roti Prata: Light, flakey pastry-like flatbread, puffed up and served with a red curry sauce. Get this for an appetizer! ($3)
Basil Beef: Beef strips sauteed with bell pepper, onions, mushrooms, baby corn, carrots, and basil in black bean sauce. We've gotten this dish both times. ($7 lunch, $10 dinner)
Thai Tea: Sweet and milky. ($3)
Malaysian Iced Coffee: Shaved ice and sweet coffee, similar to Vietnamese ice coffee. ($3)
Hainanese Seasonal Rice: Yellow rice cooked with chicken broth. I like this one the best. ($1.75)
I've tried:
Malaysian Coconut Milk Rice: Sweet. It's good if you order a spicy dish, but not my favorite. ($1.75)
Sizzling Vegetable Delight: Tofu, bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and baby corn in pepper sauce. Hot and spicy! It's big enough to split between two people. ($10)
Mango Iced Tea: Jellies and mango pulp! ($3)
The portions are large and splittable. The first time, we ordered two entrees, two sides of rice, and two drinks, and it was too much for the both of us. The second time, we split an appetizer and a lunch dish which came with rice, which was a more reasonable amount.
The service was quick and friendly. We came right when it opened, so there was no one else there. It got busier near the end of our meal however, so I would suggest coming early to avoid crowds for lunch.
We'll be back again when we're craving Thai/ Malaysian/ Signaporean food! -

My friend and I always come here for some good pad Thai. She always orders her without squid and peanuts (she is allergic to nuts). I order my pad Thai with everything on it. But one time, they added the nuts, and she almost ate it! She did not have her penicillin on her, so if she did, it wouldn't have been a good picture.
The location of this place is not so great. I would be better on the other side of the mall. Usually, when i come, they are crowded with theatre kids. So, parking is horrible.
Other than those two, food is really good. I will continue to come here, when i am in town and craving padthai. -

I wouldn't come back... I'd rather have dinner at Coldstone that's 20 ft from this place.
Service was good - the manager was attentive and the servers refilled our drinks in a timely manner; there were only 2 other tables filled though.
Roti - Good. It's even better when it's only a dollar on Wednesdays. Unfortunately, we were there on a Saturday.
Papaya Salad - Lack of Flavor
Pad Thai - Soggy and just wasn't right -
Review from Aivy C.
This place seems to have gone downhill, first in terms of service and more importantly, in terms of quality. Four servers should have been able to handle five tables (some of which only had two people each) without any issues.
I'm no expert on how to stir-fry basil chicken, but I'm sure it normally doesn't take the 30 minutes I waited, and what I got in the end definitely wasn't worth the wait - just seemed like a bunch of pre-cut chicken strips tossed in some spicy sauce with a handful of basil and haphazardly cut vegetables. I'm not usually one for aesthetics and presentation, I'm generally more concerned with how the dish tastes, but it wasn't even good.
I make better food than this when I'm drunk.
Probably not coming back.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I love to come here on Wednesday nights! $1 roti nights! About 3-4 rotis will get you started with your appetizers.
You must get the pineapple fried rice!
Pad thai extra spicy.
Yellow curry and save some of your roti to eat with your curry.
Brown or white rice? YOU pick!
And to top off your night, a shot of some Sapporo.
Customer service is awesome. I won't be surprise if the main guy that's always there notice me by now.
On game days, they will turn on the TV for you! I saw Game 4 of our be-love SF Giants! And we won! -

I came here with 5 other friends and we had a great time.
We ordered a ton of dishes and appetizers. Service was good, she was a little bossy, but I think she was just trying to be helpful.
We ordered the roti, which was dry and over cooked. The short ribs however were great! They were marinated just right, juicy and full of flavor.
As for dishes, all were solidly good, especially the curries, The rondang curry especially was very tasty. The pad thai was a little lack luster, but again, decent. We ate almost everything, but what little we had left over we had boxed up for us. Our server was very nice and gave us extra rice to go home with our dishes. We took our time and enjoyed our conversation, we weren't rushed in the slightest.
Not my greatest meal ever, but an enjoyable experience over all. If I need a quick bite before a movie at the mall I wouldn't mind going here again. Its a decent alternative for what the Great Mall has to offer in food..... -
Review from Kathy D.
I came here due to my http://restaurant.com coupon for $40 ! What do you know... We accidentally ordered food that turned out to be around $45 worth... perfect!
Coconut Grove is located right across the movie theatre at Great Mall. Not the greatest location but It will do to attract customers from the theatres and the mall while exiting if they are hungry. Is there enough parking? OF COURSE! You have the whole parking lot of the mall to choose a spot from. When we first entered the restaurant, we got the tropical green mood from its decor. http://static1.px.yelp... It is a very clean and spacious restaurant. No one else was there at the time except for us and another couple around dinner time on a Sunday night. Before ordering, I made sure that our http://restaurant.com coupon was valid since I have heard that some places don't accept it even though there are coupons available for them. SCORE! They did!
What we ordered:
1. Roti Prata- they have a special on wednesdays for $1. I've had better roti prata...It's too thin and crackley here. I like it more thick. My favorite so far is at Straits Restaurant in Santana Row. I think this was better than banana leaf roti prata though. http://static1.px.yelp...
2. Seabass Siam style fish dip- the sauce was delicious and they give you like double the order. Totally will stuff you up this dish for yourself ALONE! I love seabass in general. Nothing can go wrong unless they exremely overcook it.
3. Chicken satay- this was a bit disappointing. They just grilled chicken skewers and then gave us peanut sauce. There wasn't anything satay about it unlike other places. http://static1.px.yelp...
4. Malaysian Sizzling chicken - big portion. chicken was tender and full of flavor. IT reminded me a bt of chinese food. Average but good. Nothing to rave about.
In conclusion, this place serves huge portions. You will get your money worth. Service I have no complaints about! If you are in the area, stop by!
I don't think I would go back here though. Nothing really attracted me about this place. I rather go to other malaysian/thai places for my cravings! -

Me and my friend had a lunch date and we wanted to try this place because we've always seen it at the mall. Never thought about trying it till then, but I like to try new places. We went inside and it was pretty much empty. I mean it was around 3pm so it was a weird time for lunch anyway. We just missed the 3pm marked which meant it was full prices for dinner. BUMMER!
Anyways, the menu was really, really, really big. They had so man different noodle dishes and rice dishes. Plus a lot of different kinds of curry. I was trying to spend less than 10 dollars. Didn't work out that well. I ended up getting pad thai because I thought it was cheapest. I'm bias because I'm not a big fan of pan thai. But I still think Banana Leaf's pad thai is 10 times better. My friend got a different noodle dish that had thicker wider noodles. It was okay.
The staff was nice. They place was huge (and empty). The check came and it our waitress gave us our dishes for lunch prices which was nice of her. We had a lot of leftovers (because it wasn't that great). All and all I would pass on this place. Lots of other places that has BETTER thai food. -

Tried a new noodle dish, mi sepang i think. It was very oily and had a strange spicy sauce to it. Friends say the pad thai here isnt as good as other thai style places. I enjoyed the Roti and Calamari though, very fresh and chewy and excellent curry dip.
Overall it was okay, next time ill stay with the pinnapple fried rice, which i think its pretty good. The server we had was very nice, even though she was a bit forgetful its okay, she was very attentative. -

Thanks to http://restaurant.com, the fiance and I were able to experience another restaurant we wouldn't normally go to on a "just curious" basis. The first thing I see before I even walk in is... "Wednesday, 7-9pm, $1 roti prata". Dangit, it's Thursday today, but I guess $2.99 for roti prata isn't that bad.
1) Roti prata - you can't go to one of these restaurants without ordering the roti prata. It's not as crispy as Banana Leaf's roti prata. The bread was actually a bit uneven; some parts were crispy and others were a bit too thick. The sauce was also uneven too - the first cup we had had potatoes in it, perhaps that's why it felt a bit thick. I asked for seconds and the second was a bit more watery. Besides the consistency of the sauce, the taste was okay.
2) Nasi goreng fried rice - it wasn't as spicy as I hoped it'll be. It had a hint of curry in it, which I enjoyed. It was just a-okay.
3) Coffee short ribs - yeah, the fiance wanted a change in things so we tried this. I'm okay with coffee, but coffee with short ribs just tasted a bit weird. The best way to describe it is sweet & sour pork with a hint of coffee in it. In my opinion, it was a bit too sweet for me.
4) Fried Banana Ice Cream (aka: FBI) - I think this was a bit overhyped. It was just a-okay. Nothing too special, I would've preferred mango ice cream or something instead of vanilla.
This is a Cantonese owned Singaporean/Malaysian place. The prices were not any different from Banana Leaf. I would say just drive a few minutes down and hit up Banana Leaf. Everything there tastes better, especially the roti prata. -

Roti Canai - 3 stars
- Warm and flaky
- Average, in my book
Pad Thai - 3 stars
- Tasted kinda tomatoey...eeek
- Noodles were more Chinese than Thai...
Penang Sizzling Jumbo Scallops - 2.5 stars
- Scallops were tiny!
- Curry was okay
The main entrance to this restaurant is odd, next to a back entrance at the Great Mall, and at the end of the queue of the Century Theaters.
The windows of the main entrance door were all foggy...perhaps they need to be wiped down?
The interior ceiling reminds me of Elephant Bar...they have some talented waitstaff! ;) -

UGGGGGGGGGH! I'd rather starve than eat here ever again!
Was going to watch a movie and wanted to go to Outback but the wait was too long so I figured, fuck it, it's gottah be better than having to navigate through the crowd of baby gangsters in Great Mall and then eating at the food court. I WAS WRONG! I wish I'd gone to Mcdonald's!
Pineapple fried rice: Smelled good! Tasted like nothing. Salted rice? I dunno but the most flavorful thing in the whole dish were the canned pineapples!
Asparagus in spicy sauce: The sauce tasted like sweet and sour with salt added to it. Not spicy AT ALL and the asparagus were old, tough and chewy.
Mango chicken: NOT EVEN EDIBLE! Sourrrrrrrrrr and tasted like it was rotten. We didn't even touch it. The waitress said it's their best seller. I guess people like nasty rotten sour food?? Thank god she took it off the bill for us so 1 star for that!
Appetizer with fried tofu, chicken, whatever else. Not memorable. Gross but not as disgusting as the other dishes.
Sidenote: What did I expect out of a place called Coconut Grove, located in the Great Ghetto Mall, with a cartoon palmtree signt outside?! I should've known better.... -

1.5. No really.
Let's break it down. Lemme pre-face this whole rant by saying that the only reason we went here was because we walked out of the Great Mall Theaters *staaaaarving*. I totally deserve to smacked for this choice.
4 dishes:
Tofu Salad - Eh. And that was the best dish of the night. Warmish on the outside but cold on the inside. Huh?
Yellow curry chicken - ME: "Dude, taste this..... is that chicken?!?!?!" (never a good question)
Beef w/ scallions - HIM: "This is supposed to be warm, right?"
Coconut rice: ME: Well at least they got the rice part right.
I hate to be such a bitch. I KNOW first hand what restaurant life is like. I asked for chop-sticks FIVE. five. phi-hive. 5 - times. Only to eventually have to steal them from a service station myself. I'm all for the "asian restaurant" experience, but when my caucasian counterpart asks for an (anything) once and gets it.... and, I, uh.... well.... ya.
Don't even get me started on the shady wine pours and warm beers.
OH OH OH OH OH....... almost forgot!!!!.... WE BOTH GOT FOOD POISONING THE NEXT DAY. Cheers! -

I eat here often for lunch and for family dinners so I can't give it less than a 4.
If you want to wait for a table at Banana Leaf go ahead. I'll be seated, eated and gone by then.
I always have to have roti prata and tofu salad. Something about the peanut sauce makes you want to slap someone. You share it but you secretly want to eat it all. The eggplant belachan is a frequently ordered on also. If you order a whole crab you will be pleasantly surprised by the taste and the cost. They had this special appetizer- a spicy fried tofu that's really good...not on the menu.
The rest of the menu is pretty much Malaysian fair. It's worth going and you'll like it. -

I have to agree with Will G. the chow kueh teow is my favorite item to order. I also like their pineapple fried rice. other must haves: roti paratha and mango shrimp.
over all, the food and service is pretty decent. The cost is fair. -

Imitation Banana Leaf by a former waiter from Banana Leaf. Sure, their Roti Prata is much thicker and big but they can't hang with the curry over there at Banana Leaf. Their chicken satay and pineapple fried rice doesn't even come close to the best Malaysian/Singaporean food in the bay area, "Banana Leaf"!

Coconut Grove is one of the best restaurants in Milpitas. For all the haters, sorry, but you are all wrong. The food there is great as I try to go there every other week or so. The manager, Kevin, always provides great service and recommends different dishes every time I go there to eat. Since we(Wifey and I) are regulars, Kevin will always greets us like we've known him for many years.
Try the Calamari, Roti Prata, Pineapple Fried Rice, Pad Thai, Deep Fried Tofu, Vegetable Delight, Rendang Beef, Coconut Fried Chicken, Ku Margaritas(Lime!), and of course....their Thai iced tea. For dessert, try their fried bananas! Yummy.
I might just go there tomorrow even though I was just there last Sunday!
Yummy! -

We came with a group of 30 one Sunday afternoon and they seated us w/in 5-10 minutes. Granted, we had called ahead to make sure the place was available.
The food was so-so. Uninspiring, wasn't terrible, but it wasn't anything to rave about. I did like the eggplant with garlic, that was pretty well cooked. Not too mushy, and enough taste not to overwhelm.
The green curry chicken thing was spicy, I can take spicy, but it was kind of unpleasant to eat. haha It was aiite.
The Malaysian iced tea did not taste like it.
We got the firecracker shrimp too, whatever that thing is with the egg, it was okay. Nothing special.
And we got some random beef dish that wasn't memorable either
The worst part was that they charge $1.75 for a bowl of rice. ahhh That was awful to find out at the end.
Overall, I wouldn't go back, but it accommodates 30 people REALLY nicely, so that was a huge +. Another huge + was that they let us order by table and so we had split checks, that was cool when it came time to pay. The service was also pretty attentive and fast and the food also came out quickly. 3 stars. :) -

Although the name suggests a cabana like atmosphere being served by sexy beach waiters in tropical shorts and bikini clad women with tight asses, it's unfortunately not. I've been here a few times and the experience has always been ... alriiiiiite. I immediately am not thrilled to enter the vicinity of the Great Mall (which takes away from its tropical paradise atmosphere), but at least it has its own entrance. The waiter service went from okay to what we computer scientists call: NULL. It's not even a zero, it just doesn't exist.
One person in our party found the chicken in the curry to be uncooked and didn't touch it for the rest of the meal. They also forgot to give us our coconut rice which caused hungry people to become even more cranky. However, they did give my friend a free undrinkable cocktail for her birthday and make pretty decent chai ice tea.
The place is never too busy which is nice since it allows you and your friends to be loud, laugh like crazy and have a nice night without bothering the patrons or staff... or at least not care if you do. -

Went Christmas shopping while hubby went to a movie, then we met here for dinner. With tip, $50 for dinner for two, included one Thai iced tea and one beer .
Egg Roti- curry sauce was good but overpriced for $5 - Wednesday is $1 regular Roti, should have stuck with that
Oxtail Soup- hubby reports that it was watery- too bad, our Korean friend Dahye speaks highly of this soup when done properly, but this dish was not done properly as my husband didn't even finish it - $7
Chicken Wings- flavor was right on, presentation was nice (wrapped in a scallion bow), but all of the bones were broken - ALL of them- that meant picking through to make sure there weren't fragments, not so much fun
Mee Goreng- I like this dish, the squid was cooked to perfection, the shrimp were overcooked, the tofu was cooked right- it also had potatoes, tomatoes, sprouts, and I got it spicy- it was a little greasy for my taste but otherwise I have no complaints. I'd order this dish again. $9
Unfortunately the Mee Goreng was the only dish we said we'd order again- I think there's better meals in the Bay for $50.
Service was very good, our waitress was attentive and kind, and the gentlemen who greeted us at the door was friendly. Decor was much nicer than I'd expected for a mall restaurant, tasteful.Listed in: Dinner for two $60 or less

I like this place...the restaurant has a nice dining atmosphere to it and their decorations are cool. My co-worker and I came here to try it out for lunch. My husband's been here for lunch and dinner and I was so jealous! He brought home leftovers and I told myself that the next time I was in the area, I would try it out. That day was the other week.
We got there at 10:45 and luckily, they let us in and seated us so we can look at their menu. I got the Nasi Lemak which is coconut rice flavored with cloves and pandan leaves. Served with curry chicken, fried anchovies, peanuts, hard boiled eggs and vegetables. Their presentation was very nice and the food is very gooood! My friend got the Chow KeowTeow which is Hokkeinese stir-fried rice noodles with prawns, squid, egg & bean sprouts...she requested chicken instead of squid. They did let us know that she was ordering noodles that were wet, I thought that was nice. She had never eaten this cuisine before.
I've attached pictures of what we ordered and overall, we loved the customer service. She was super friendly and made sure we were taken care of throughout the meal. I love exposing my friends to new foods and this was a great first experience for the both of us. I'll definitely come back so that I can try other dishes.
Oh yah, we also got the roti and since it was a Wednesday, we got to enjoy it for only $1! They honor the $1 price all day, not just dinner. 1 extra star for that, yay! Plus, it's hella good! -

I've been eyeing this restaurant for the past couple of months, because I've been having crazy pad Thai noodle cravings. I finally was able to try this place out with my boyfriend last week, and I liked the dining experience a lot.
When we first got there, there was only one server, and she seated us right away. She suggested the roti, it being $1, because it was a wednesday. She was helpful with my questions about the tofu dishes, refilled our waters before we needed to ask for more, and was helpful with bagging our food. She didn't push the check in our faces, and that's a plus for me!
The roti was good. It reminded me of naan bread from Indian restaurants. The dipping sauce was ok, I wish it was a bit thicker. It was too runny for me, especially when it hardly stuck on the bread. My boyfriend loved it, though.
I loved their pad Thai noodles! The quantity was more than I expected. The shrimps were big, and there were a few tofu pieces in it.
The Sizzling Tofu was good. It had baby corn, mushrooms, carrots, and big pieces of tofu covered in a soupy sauce. I enjoyed eating that with our side white rice.
My boyfriend specifically ordered the beef curry. He didn't like it much. I didn't taste it, cuz I was busy enjoying the noodles.
We went there again yesterday, and ordered the pad Thai noodles again. I noticed that the shrimps were a bit smaller than last week's. We ordered the Golden Tofu. It reminded me so much if the Sizzling Tofu. It was ok. We tried one if their Malaysian appetizers (Malaysian Labak?). It had fried tofu, shrimp "cakes", and a duck "roll", if that makes sense. I didn't like it much. Their Malaysian iced coffee was tasty. It reminded me of Hawaiian coffee that come in cans.
Overall, it's worth trying out their dishes here. The staff are friendly and are attentive. The ambiance has a cozy feel to it. I don't mind the large tvs as long as it's not too loud. I'm definitely coming back. -

2.5 stars.
Came here for lunch just because we were too lazy to get out of the Great Mall on a sizzling hot day. Had the coffee short ribs and vegetarian curry laksa. This place is not worth it for the amount/ quality of food we got and the price we paid. The short ribs was nice and tender but portion was small. I find the laksa unacceptable as the soup was awfully oily! I personally like the thick rice noodles but they use vermicelli as the laksa noodles.
Would I come here again? Very unlikely! -

I've been here several times, mostly for lunch. The food comes out quick and the servers are very nice. The only thing is the food, It's a hit or miss.
We ordered a safe dish, the pad see ew and for some reason it didn't taste good at all. Noodles were overcooked and all the pieces of meat were hard.
The last time I came I had to ask for a new fork 3 times because it had food crud on it. The waitress said it was the fork. Um i don't think so. -

I decided to go here because it was close by. I don't know of any good Thai places around the area and didn't want to drive too far. Trying to find parking on a Saturday evening is terrible with shoppers and movie goers.
The food here was disappointing. The service was blah but I was hoping for some good Thai food. I ordered coconut juice and a glass of water. I loved that it came in the whole coconut. My water never came and I asked for it again and again.
We ordered Pad Thai, papaya salad, spicy fried calamari, sizzling fried tofu and Pineapple fried rice. For desert we have mango sweet rice and fried banana ice cream.
The calamari was way over crispy leaving you with no calamari taste but rather a bad burnt after taste. I was hoping for an explosion of spices and flavors in my mouth but that never came. The papaya salad had no flavors at all, so disappointing.
The pad thai noodles were very soggy. The fried rice wasn't any better. To my surprise the sizzling tofu was the best dish we ordered.
The mango fried rice was horrible. I had a few bites and felt that was plenty. The fried banana ice cream was really good. The presentation and the taste were satisfying.
The fried banana ice cream desert would only be the reason I would ever go back there. -

The main reason I dined here was because of the $10 off $20 coupon I got from http://restaurant.com a while ago. This place is not the best Thai,Indian.Malaysian restaurant in milpitas.
try the restaurants in milpitas square just a few blocks away
I dined here at lunch, and I think they shrink the size of the food if you order from the Lunch Special menu, it's cheaper for $1 or 2, but might not be enough for the guys.
I ordered some roti,Hai nan chicken and Chow Keow Teow.
The roti was too thick and oily, the curry sauce had no curry taste but super salty.
The rice for the chicken was super hard, the chicken was dry.
the noodle was soggy and over seasoned.
I give them 2 stars is probably because the nice staffs and they offer coupons
And the wifi didn't work when I was there!!

Coconut Grove is a very convenient place to eat because of its location right next to the cinema. Outback steakhouse nearby is usually way too busy at any time of the day. Seldom do I have to wait long before getting seated at Coconut Grove. This is the one and only reason why I dine here.
To be perfectly honest with you, the food and service here are mediocre at best. Many of the dishes (especially noodles) are way too greasy. The curries are severely lacking flavors. Some of the meat dishes are a bit overcooked. -

Coconut Grove is good for two things:
1) To eat here before or after a movie and/or shopping.
2) To get some above average Thai food.
I love their roti, their pad thai, even the fried rice. Their service is quite good but I do have to agree with the other yelpers . It gets pretty crowded and their seats are awfully close to each other. -

Location:
Had dinner here on a Tuesday night (I usually order to go). It was dead! Seriously, only three tables were taken. Prime location if you're looking at getting some grub before a movie. Usually the area is a bopper fest, but luckily it was a school night.
Service:
The woman working was on top of everything. I never had to raise my hand for service. She was really nice and soft-spoken. Nothing really bad I can say about the service.
Food:
Mango Iced Tea - So good I ordered two along with a water.
Tom Kha Chicken Soup - Wasn't too spicy, but I'm sure you can ask for a higher level if you're brave. Good mix between the lemon and coconut milk flavors. The chicken also wasn't super dry like other places I've tried.
Coconut Grove Fried Rice - There is something about Thai fried rice that makes it tastier than Chinese Fried rice. A staple dish...get it and pair it with a meat dish.
Rendeng Beef - Spicy and not too curry-y lol. Compliments the rice and eggplant.
Belechan Eggplant - Despite being cooked in fish paste, the saltiness is not at all overpowering. I love pairing stir fried eggplant with either a spicy or sweet meat option.
Pad Thai - Not the best, but it was good. I usually get the Chow Keow Teow over this.
Price:
For all these dishes the bill came to about $100. It fed a family of 4 (3 sons and a mom). I'd have to say that everyone got at least 2 plates. I only ate one because I got full of of the iced tea and water.
Overall:
Decent place...I personally like it. Wednesdays are also $1 Proti nights! -

I'm really torn here. I've had good and bad experiences at Coconut Grove and have a difficult time deciding how many stars to give. I could easily give the place 1 stars or 5 stars depending on the experiences I've had, but the restaurant has the volatility of a penny stock.
Here's how my rankings would go
-Based on the Roti Prata - 5
-Based on the Ambiance/Comfort/Price - 4
-Based on the Nasi Lamak - 3
-Based on the meat dishes (I think I'm sticking to veg next time) - 2
-Based on the Service (Expect 20min to get your bill) - 1
What makes me come back to this place? I think the primary reason is peer pressure (coworkers), but the biggest advantage this place has is the lack of crowd, and that's a good secondary factor. You can walk in at any time of day and be seated immediately. This isn't possible at Banana Leaf (Hell no!) and is not even possible at similar Red Kwali during the busy business lunch hour(s).
I'll keep coming back, but I'm going to be more selective about what I eat, and more confrontational about getting the bill. -

My Opinion/Story:
My husband knows that if and when we're in the area, there is only one malaysian place where I want to eat.. it's the Coconut Grove. They have the best roti prata and their sauce is sooooo good that you can just eat their peanut sauce. Some of their dishes are pretty good like their rendang beef and chicken. Their chicken and beef satay is also good. They give enough for us to be full but not have left overs. (Which is good because we always end up watching a movie after) But we always get our own roti prata because one is not enough for the both of us... hey.. even one each isn't enough. Service is good and they always get us what we need. The only disadvantage to this place is the location and parking. But then it's also an advantage for them. -

I've been here a couple times and have always been happy with the dishes we've gotten. Last weekend we went there and ordered Roti Prata (always soo good!), Tom Yum Soup (great flavor), Malaysian Sizzling Beef (yum), and Sarang Vegetables (good but I wish the taro nest wasn't taro sticks formed into a nest but the soft taro nest which is more of blocks of taro).
But the thing that was the best about this visit is my mom called my dad during our meal saying they took her food away at the hospital while she was sleeping and she was hungry. So he asked the waitress if they could make something for her that wasn't too spicy but had some flavor, had chicken in it, and rice or noodles. After asking a couple questions, the waitress recommended a couple dishes that might work. We decided to get her pineapple fried rice with chicken and the waitress made sure they kept the flavoring minimal and to not use any MSG or spices. Although my mom's taste buds were all out of whack, she did eat some of the rice and was happy to eat non-hospital food.
...i'm craving some Roti Prata and Tom Yung Soup now!
