Coal Train Coffee House
2 reviews for Coal Train Coffee House
Coming back from the north rim of the Black Canyon, my mom and I were hungry but also needed to find a place that allowed dogs. For some nonsensical reason, I brought my dogs to the Black Canyon, where their only desire seemed to be to fling themselves off of the edge. Regardless of their suicidal tendencies, it was still too hot to leave them in the car while we ate. We drove by this place, and noticed the outdoor seating, so we pulled over and went in.
Great menu, full of sandwiches. wraps, salads, coffee drinks, smoothies, and desserts. Very friendly staff and quick service. My mom had a turkey sandwich with cranberry sauce (the Gobbler, I think) and I had a delicious vegetable sandwich. We sat outside and the wait staff was nice enough to come out and ask us if we wanted refills for our iced teas.
This place, and this town for that matter, is pretty far off of the beaten path, but if for some reason you're looking for a place to eat and relax in Hotchkiss, Colorado, this is the spot.

Let's say for some reason you're crossing Colorado via the byways.
It's a heck of a cold day, you've been driving in the snow four or five hours, with just a quick stop for gas and-you-know-what, and you want to have a quick lunch.
You happen to be driving with a would-be vegetarian flexible enough to have adapted to eating mostly burgers for the last week, and you know a change would be appreciated.
What are the odds of finding a privately owned, European looking and at the same time down to heart place, warm and familiar, with an array of inviting quiches and sandwiches and cakes and a focus on organic food and fair trade?
Coal Train Coffee House is quite unbelievable for all of the above plus the ambiance, including a cozy reading room with couches and armchairs. Nothing could be better on a cold snowy day on the road.
