My first OH but this experience was fabulous!
Great location, logistics were perfect to the T, and a big shout-out to Johnny T for the doing-good touch and making us think of others who are less fortunate, while we were having a rocking time on the 103rd floor, and actually do something for them..Listed in: Entertainment in My Town, My…

And for my next trick, I will hang suspended over the city with nothing but an acrylic box to break my fall. Quiet in the crowd, kids....don't try this at home.
"She's a mad woman"
"By George it can't be done"
"Jumpin' jehosephats"
A hush falls over the crowd... husssssssh
Ok, this was the scene in my head, well that and the possiblity of the entire thing snapping and sending me plunging to my death (what can say I watch too much TV). But neither of these scenarios occured. Instead I was left with an awesome view of the city and the company of good people and lets not forget the treats (I still have a sugar buzz from that huge brownie).
*Mr. Chicago, you've done another great job. Thanks!!

I was on top of the world!!
Almost.
Seriously, I've never scooted to an Office Hours before and SO glad I started with this one. What a better opportunity to come attempt to jump off a ledge!
The Ledge is at first menacing. But you grab the wall and take the plunge. Then let go of the wall. Realize, it ain't so bad. And start snapping pictures!! Too fun!
The staff at the Sears Tower was SO amazingly friendly. And I can't believe it only takes 60 seconds to go up 103 stories. That elevator ride though was worse than the Ledge. It started shaking and my airplane flying anxiety kicked in! Ugh.
BIG props to Johnny though. This is an amazing event! With yummy snacks! I cleaned ya outta Yelpstick and nail files. Replaced my two dirty beer can holders. AND got an awesome Skydeck flash drive that already has pictures on it for you. Which is an idea I'm stealing for my place of employment! :)
All-in-all fabulous, high flyin' good time! And now we can all say we've walked on THE LEDGE! OooooooOOooo!!Listed in: All things Yelp-y

You can do this MaryAnne. You can do it.
It's secure. Right?
You can do this MaryAnne. You can do it.
You can do this MaryAnne. You can do it.
Oh my God I can't. I really can't. No, honestly.
Are my shaking legs visible to everyone?
Will said shaking legs bring about the box giving in and falling to my death?
You can do this MaryAnne. You can do it.
Is my winter coat too heavy? Should I take it off? If the box does give way I would need my winter coat on while falling to my death. Right?
You can do this MaryAnne. You can do it.
You can do this MaryAnne. You can do it.
Just one step.....
I did it. With the help of the lovely Angie. And holding onto the wall. And deep breathing exercises to prevent a heart attack. And prayer.
I nearly fainted when Jerry said someone WAS JUMPING IN THE BOX.
If I had seen that I would have surely passed out.
The best office hours thus far. Great job Johnny. -

I know it's been a bit of a free for all on the Talk threads recently, but I never expected this: on November 19, 2009, Yelp Chicago pushed a lot of people out onto The Ledge - willingly.
No, Yelpers did not sign a Jim Jones-esque pact en masse (no one drank the Yelp-aid, right?). All some of us did was attend the November Office Hours on the Skydeck of the "Sears" Tower. And, well, I have to admit that I wasn't pushed onto The Ledge. Cajoled maybe - shaking at first - but no one pushed. But in the end the views of the city were worth the momentary heart stoppage. And after the first few seconds, the vertigo goes away I discovered.
Being one of the world's biggest scaredy cats, even going to the top of Willis (yeah, it does hurt to say) Tower is something I probably wouldn't have done sans Yelp. Thanks to Johnny T. for giving me the opportunity to conquer a fear and have a great time with amazing nightime views of the city from the absolute top of North America.
Plus giving some great swag like a Yelp nail file and a freebie zip drive from the people at Willis Tour to boot.
One problem though. Due to the limited refreshments (only coffee to drink? Who needs coffee when your heart is racing from the height?), I was driven to purchase a water from the "world's highest gift shop." This was another interesting thing I never would have experienced without Yelp, but it's one I could have done without.
Overall, though, a great time. It's going to be hard to top this office hours at ground level. So, obviously the next one is going to be in outer space. Right Johnny? I'll just have to get over my fear of weightlessness.Listed in: The Yelp Seen (Official Event…

Look, ma, I'm on top of the world...errr...SearsWillisTowerwhateveryouwannacal lit.
Whatever name you give it, I braved The Ledge and was way up high. What a view!
Thanks to Johnny T for setting the Office Hours bar really, really high and treating us to time in The Box while filling our pockets with more Yelpstick and a neato Skydeck flash drive.
Additional thanks goes to the Tower and Skydeck staff for being incredibly friendly and helpful. Friendliness goes a long way when luring people up over 100 stories and encouraging them to face their fears. I'd be back for that service, even without the fast elevator to the top!Listed in: Take A Walk on the Wild Side

Review from Mary T.
Being terribly afraid of heights I questioned my sanity from the moment I clicked "I'm in" for this event. I've been to the Sky Deck twice before and pretty much stayed glued to a wall, you know just in case some mysterious, invisible force decided to suck me out the window.
Maybe it's old age, I don't know, but I've become decidedly more daring in recent years. No, I won't be jumping out of a plane any time soon, but I was comfortable perusing the Sky Deck, and getting up close to the windows. Even after some serious arm twisting I made it out on the ledge; I survived and there was no crying or vomiting involved!* Which is good because who wants to be known as 'that Yelper who barfed all over the ledge while crying like a baby.'
Thanks for Johnny T and the Skydeck crew for planning this event. The view at night is terrific with the city all lit up and, in my opinion, way more interesting than the view during the daytime. Being a local, touristy things aren't usually at the top of my to do list, but I'm glad this event got me up there.
* I think the trick for owning the ledge is not only to not look down, but to back onto it. I tried to walk right on, but was a bit paralyzed by fear and nausea.Listed in: Yelping around town!, Chica-go-go

Review from Amy H.
This is not a very fair review because I was literally there for 10 minutes before we were asked to leave.
I've always wanted to check out the Sears Tower, but never really wanted to pay admission price. These are the times when Yelp is pretty cool. I stuck a foot out onto the Sky Ledge (whoever thought of that is an insane person!!) and got to hug some of my favorite Yelp peeps. I didn't partake in the refreshments, which looked to be cookies, brownies, and coffee.
It was cool, but I wished that I could have gotten there sooner. Can office hours please go later? -

What an amazing night! Being here for less than 3 weeks, Chicago has given me an out of this world first impression like no other city! Did anyone else have the urge to jump up and down violently over the transparent ledge? I did, and I was fighting really hard not to do it, LOL!
Shouts to Johnny for putting together such an amazing office hour. This was my first office hour and I think it spoiled me. Definitely looking forward to the next one though, no matter where it's going to be held.
5 Stars for a great event, and another 5 stars go to the awesome people I met yesterday! You know who you are! -

-Work done got too hard.
He's gone, but I don't worry,
Cause I'm sittin', I'm sittin'on top of the world.-
More like sitting on top of Chicago, but you feel me. I'm a born and bred Chicagoan. I realized today how pathetic it was that this was my *first* time up to the top of Sears (I can't call it the other name!) Tower. I'm so happy that Johnny picked the Skydeck to have Office Hours. It was wonderful. Just wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed my time up there. I can't believe I've been leaving this to tourists all this time. How foolish I've been.
I went up there deathly afraid of heights, but came down having sat down in the transparent ledge. The view is spectacular and like absolutely none other in the city. It's inspiring during the daytime and mesmerizing at night. I think we all were just a little sad when it was time to go. I'm definitely going to go back and drink it all in again.Listed in: OYE!!! THE LEDGE IS AWESOME!
Seriously!
And I'm afraid of heights!
When I first read about the ledge a few months ago, I thought that was something I would never ever be able to stand on. I have a hard time getting close to railings or windows when I'm up to high. But I managed to force myself to stand on the ledge. At first I felt like I was going to fall over. It was too hard to breath and stand at the same time. But then it got better. I was able to take a couple photos out there, and even sit on the ledge.
I am so glad to have Yelp and Johnny T to arrange things like this, that get me to do things I would never do on my own! I wouldn't have known what I was missing!
Big thanks to Johnny and to all of the people at Willis Tower!Listed in: Yelptastic

"Pop pop goes my ear drums, my ear drums..." [To the tune of "Pop Goes the Weasel" by Third Bass* (don't tell me you don't know this 90's one-hit wonder song because you do).]
Yup, my ears were feelin' the poppin' action as I rode the elevator up to and down the Sears Tower Skydeck. This won't be much of a review because I was only here for a very short time. Very short. I arrived about 15 minutes before it ended. I took 3 pictures. I saw and hugged Yelp friends. I left for another event.
This was one of my favorite office hours. I'm glad I was able to make it in time because I had never been to the Sears Tower. It was great to see Yelper friends I haven't seen in awhile and to meet a few new ones, while taking in the breath-taking views from the Sears Tower. (Yeah, Sears. I'm not even originally from Chicago or IL, and I say Sears.) Thanks, Johnny T. and Sears employees for making this happen.

My palms still sweat just thinking about The Ledge...but I LOVED it!
I kinda felt like I was at Disney with the friendly staff guiding my every move from the front door to my impending doom...I mean...to the Skydeck. Not to mention the informative videos to entertain you along the way.
It was nice and homey up top with delicious cookies and brownies and (darn I forgot to pick them up AGAIN) cool yelp swag. And how can I forget all the friendly, smiling faces.
Thanks again to all of my new friends who helped talk me onto the ledge! Laying in the freezing plastic box a million feet above the hard concrete was actually quite relaxing.
Ugh, still sweating. Best office hours yet! -
Review from Dennis S.
Another well done event, in a fascinating venue. But boy would a stiff drink have been welcomed!
Coffee and cookies were fine, but standing on top of the Sears/Willis Tower and looking straight down through the glass floor would have been easier with a martini or a glass of wine. The event was really well set up, with building staff ushering Yelpers straight through and helping at every turn. We were able to wander around the entire observation deck, with one area reserved for Yelpers only.
The crowd was a bit sparse, but everyone there seemed to enjoy the top-of-the-world experience.
Johnnie was a great host and made everyone feel welcome. Another well organized and well executed Yelp event. -

johnny t, you're the man!!
thank you for taking me to the top of the world (well, at least the tallest building in the U.S.)
this was my first yelp office hours, and it totally blew my mind (love those views!!), a perfect end to a crazy work day :)
and i got my lunch box!!
yay!!
for the squeamish when it comes to heights...it's not that bad!! my stomach kinda dropped a little when i took that first baby step, but then i realized i wasn't going anywhere...and the view was so freakin' cool!
seriously, the elevator ride up was way scarier (you could feel the tower moving!! not so on the observation deck).
i'll be back!!
