Joan S. has done a wonderful job of describing this wee hilltop!

My visit was around 9pm on a Sunday night. We had a little bit of a turn around trying to find it, but once you realize where it is, its quite obvious how to get there. There are are benches, and chess tables and a couple of those "telescope" thingies that swivel around.

When we arrived the place already had some visitors! People were coming and going the whole time. A couple were making out, another were enjoying late night coffee, a whole family were sitting around in their cars just watching the lights.

Most of the airplanes landing and taking off are freight. The northern runways are generally for passenger planes, and much more busy. It's generally quite except for the air plane roars, or other LAX noises that get lifted up on the wind.

Next time I'll be bringing my binoculars, and a thermos with some tea, since the sea breeze can be quite chilly.

It's also known as Imperial Hill.  It's an overlook that gives you an unobstructed view of the entire southern side of LAX, where you can see a constant stream of aircraft take-offs and landings.
To enter from the north side, turn off of Imperial Hwy. on Main Street, then turn left on Imperial Ave. (which runs parallel to Imperial Hwy.).  Go to the top of the hill and look for the flag.  Park on the street for free.  Or you can take Beach Cities Transit, there's a bus stop right at the park.

Clutter's Park is not a park in the traditional sense, as there is no grassy area.  It consists of a few benches, four chess tables, and two free telescopes.....in a small area by the side of the road.
But this space delights families with kids & the elderly & everyone else who finds their way here.  Some people linger there for hours, watching the huge aircraft ascend into the clouds.  I often think there are probably former pilots among the elderly onlookers.
The park is located so as to give a clear view of take-offs, I assume because they are more dramatic than landings.  Landings are visible also, but in the distance, off to the east.

When I was a little kid, my mother and I spent many a Saturday at the Chicago airport, watching planes take off and land.  I learned to love those big shiny birds, and wanted to be on every flight to everywhere.  I wonder if this had anything to do with the fact that when I grew up I became seriously involved with three pilots and an air traffic controller.....haha..........(not all at the same time, of course).

Here's a secret spot, after you have had your fill of planes in action at Clutter's Park:
It's only a few blocks down the street from the park.
Go west on Imperial Ave., pass Main St., go up the hill, and keep going to the dead end. You can't park there, but you can look to the north to see the airplane "graveyard", where it appears that a few old planes have been dissected.  Pieces of them remain, all gutted and rusted........it's eerie.
See my photo of this & the park, 10 pics in all.
