What can I say this place is a great VENUE!
I think of this place as Sammy's but with more 90's and 2000's type music. The cover band is superb. They really get into it and the performance really gets the crowd going. The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is based on the location and clientele. If this was in midtown it was get 5 stars right away but with it being in downtown parking is an issue and there are so many bums and thieves. Also if their clients were the same as the ones that come to Sammy's this was surely be a 5 star. But the people that come here sometimes can be ghetto. I came on a Saturday so this review is only Saturdays not any other night.
If it wasnt for the http://Meetup.com singles group this place would have been very slow even after 11pm.
They do mix in modern stuff with retro stuff, not so much on the retro though.
Everything else is pretty much like any other mainstream nightclub on the planet
I cant believe the cover band actually sang "what is love" which is the song used in the movie Night at the Roxbury .
I am not actually a nightclub fan so I am moving my star review from what would have been a 2 to a 3 to account for that.
In my honest opinion this is a nice spot. I like the way they set up the seating. The seating is in the center of the club which is cool, But not enough room when going to the main bar. A little more space to allow traffic would be nice. This would avoid the clientele from bumping into each other. I do agree that it has recently attracted ghetto people here. Other then that mostly its full of diverse culture..
So a friend wanted to go to Venue for her 30th birthday, so I just bit my tongue and make the trip to downtown. Parking sucks, but that's expected in downtown. The drinks are expensive, again expected. I didn't think it was too difficult to get to the bar, but then again we were a big group of girls.
I liked the seating, plenty of couches out front where talking was easier and lots of tables and pub chairs closer to the dance floor. They have VIP areas off to the side of the dance floor for those people who'd rather watch other people have a good time. The dance floor was a nice size but started to get pretty crowded after midnight. The live band played some 80's set, between the hip hop DJ.
Ended up being a great night, mostly because of the company. But club gets 4 stars for entertaining us, and not preventing the good time!!
First, I should state this review is for Venue's Latin Friday night. I'd never been to Venue but I knew of some friends who liked the place (albeit they had been here on Saturdays) so I was really looking forward to coming here for the Latin Fridays. Ah, salsa, bachata, merengue...I wanted to get my latin groove on! *Sigh*....I should have known better when my friends said that jeans were okay. I won't go into the decor since I think that's been covered. However, what's up with all the bouncers & security? It looked like a secret service convention.
Anyhow, my friends and I get there a little bit before 10:30 so we didn't have to pay a cover (yay for that). By first appearances, it looked like it was going to be a fun night...there were a lot of latin people, which I took as a good sign. At 10:30, the wall separating the dance area from the lounge open up and people rushed over to claim tables...kinda reminded me of the great oklahoma land rush, with people staking their tables with drinks and coats. While I'm waiting for the band to start playing, I'm grooving to the DJ, though I kinda find it strange that they're not playing latin music. No biggie, though. The band (which is latin, btw) will come on soon and the salsa will be swinging! I'm so excited! They take to the stage and open up with....Closer, by Ne-Yo...WTF? I like the song so I don't really mind, thinking they're just warming up and trying to get the crown going, especially since the next song is a latin one, though not salsa/merengue/bachata. From there, though, it's a total bust. Metallica? Linkin Park? Brittany Spears? Kate Perry, Journey, Bon Jovi, etc, etc, etc. What happened to latin night? In the span of 3 hours, the band played about 5 - 6 latin songs. Apparently, Venue's idea of latin night is having a latin band play Top 40 music.
My friends and I were completely disappointed and it kinda put a damper on the entire evening. Honestly, we would have probably left had it not been for the fact that we had a good parking spot. We still ended up having fun but it's kinda like having a craving for butter pecan ice cream with toffee and caramel, only to have to settle for plain vanilla. Still yummy, but not quite what you wanted.
The band was okay, nothing spectacular. The crowd was your typical downtown mish-mash...the hotties, the naughties, the wannabes...but everyone was out for a good time. A little word of advice to the guys: lay off the hair gel! I'm happy to see that guys are putting an effort into their looks, but please, use a dime-size of product, not the whole jar.
So, 2 stars for the latin deception. Plus, it's just wrong to charge $5 for Bud Light. If you want a true hot latin night, go somewhere else...unless you want to hear a latin band play Womanizer.
So, it's been a while since 'da club' was my favorite way to spend a Friday night but I had an excellent time at Venue. This latin dance club had a live band and the place was packed! I only speak enough Spanish to order a beer and get to the bathroom, but my friend from Spain was singing along to all the songs, so they must have been popular and they sounded good to me. There are tables near the back and a generous dance floor in front of the stage. The band really knew how to work the crowd and bartenders kept the drinks coming - no waits!
The only downside is that we got there a little late in the night so the line at the front door was extremely long. Good thing Spanish homegirl sweettalked the bouncer...I really need to learn more Spanish if I'm gonna hang out in Houston!
Venue is the the most "upscale" club....downtown,
It's also pretty big, reminds me of barrio. On Sat, you have a live band playing top 40, 80's, and rock. During the break the DJ mixes in some techno/trance mixes. Great diverse place for large groups with plenty of seating (couches and tables)
BUT you have your downtown flaws: parking, expensive drinks, fight to get to the bar, and the downtown crowd. A little overbearing at times.
It was alright.... Drinks are pricey. I am not cheap by any means but 24 dollars for two drinks is steep for my taste, and we aren't talking about long islands or anything, it was a hypnotiq and pineapple for 12 dollars!!!!! It was extremely large for a downtown club. I would go back.....when I have lots of money to spare!
It was one of those nights out in the town, Houston's down town to be exact. My husband and I felt like we had just stepped in to a Sex in the City episode. Surrounded by beautiful, tall buildings, lights, mounted police and people ready to have fun (except we had to hurry and make a decision as to where to party before everything closed at around 3AM).
A friend of ours recommended Club Venue as a stylish and very trendy nightclub. So we rounded up a few friends to make a group and set out to drink and dance for as long as...2A.M....which is their closing time. The line was relatively short and the linees not very friendly. It seems like most people in these days and whereabouts are afraid to interact with each other. The bouncer was very unprofessional and had a bit of an attitude, which is to be expected. The cover fee was $10.00, relatively cheap for someone who grew up in Miami and has had to pay over $45.00 (unless I knew somebody, which was usually the case). The club is beautifully decorated with white fabric making the walls and atmosphere light and giving it the feel of a relaxing flow with a touch of class. The tastefully chosen sofas and V.I.P. tables, however where too numerous and clumped altogether. They lacked appeal in their arrangement on the dance floor as they left a very narrow hallway on each side to get to the front and not enough room to dance. Which brings me to the dance floor, that seemed to me to be too small and traditional. The Band that was playing that night was amateurish and not up to the standards of the look being portrayed by the décor of this club. Once established and ready to dance I noticed something eerily disturbing and reminiscent of my middle school graduation dance. On the dance floor were an embarrassingly large amount of very good looking girls, including myself, and the guys were just standing there, not dancing but just gawking in wishful thinking, all with a drink on their hand. This is right about the time when the band stopped playing and the D.J. dazzled us with late 80's and early 90's music including Bon Jovi and Guns and Roses, which after listening to hip hop and having made it to the year 2008, didn't seem to mix very well. At that point I figured it must be the change of culture between Miami's and Houston's night life and decided that I would have fun anyway, since I already had paid for parking, entrance, and drinks. It was great to experience something different although a bit disappointing, but after a few drinks I had fun anyway and regressed back to eighth grade, singing along and avoiding other human contact like dancing with a guy. Next time I'll stick to having parties in my house, where the music is up to date, no one dances alone, people have conversations, and everybody knows your name. This club looks like it has a lot of potential, looks classy, looks sophisticated and hip, and charges like it too... but is not quite what I thought it would be. It was too clean, and innocent for a nightclub, in my opinion. A little too suburban for an otherwise Urban environment.
This place is the nicest downtown club / lounge / whatever I've been to. But I don't go downtown too much...
Very spacious inside, lots of seating (couches and tall chairs), two bars, clean restrooms, big dance floor. I've been there three or four times and only made it to the dance floor like twice. It's just too tiring to get that far.
Restrooms are clean.
This place is huge, but nothing spectacular. I went last Thursday night and the drinks were a little pricey. I was impressed with the decor though. It's a good place to people watch as it seemed that that's all everyone did. Huge dancefloor that pretty much remained empty...
