15 reviews for Club H Fitness
before I go on, I should state that I'm not a member - yet!
This is purely from first impressions, and from my experience in comparing and contrasting, it's mostly about the people, and Club H definitely wins in the 'good first impression' department, thanks to the woman Liz who showed me around.
I went shopping around today to make the choice between joining Club H on 34th or Equinox on 33rd, since they're pretty similar places. I don't know who did the design at either place but they both have the look of Rockwell Group / W hotels...mosaic tile, steam, sunny workout rooms...hip and clean and plenty of towels.
Club H also has a spa, which is a nice motivational treat for me anyway...It looks like Club H has a lot more machines and a much nicer layout (with great lighting) and was very peaceful feeling, whereas Equinox just felt 'pushy' starting with the people on the elevator on the way up (Club H entrance is right on the street so you save an elevator ride experience if that's worth anything - but hey, it all adds up...especially in flu season ;)
I am not a gym person at all (conceptually sweaty indoor machines are just disgusting to me, but a. I'm not in CA anymore and b. I need to find a place to do post knee surgery rehab, and not too far from home) and Liz totally got it.
I got a really nice, thorough, intro tour from Liz who showed me around, and gave me just enough info, but seemed to really get why I was there.
then I visited Equinox on 33rd where the sales guy named Joe literally had me muttering in the elevator 'I wouldn't join here if you paid me because of that guy!' even though the facilities are just as nice -
Club H has November zero initiation in November, and only $90./month, which is very reasonable.
Equinox's "$25. initiation but only for the next 10 days" and $145/month isn't that much more, but even if the rates were reversed, it was Liz's "let's check back before the end of the month to see how you're doing" as opposed to Equinox-Joe's pushy "so, are you going to join today?!" (when I had already mentioned I am having 2nd knee surgery this coming Friday so...duh, like I said, probably in about 4 weeks...hello, get it?)
the walk (or in my case limp) to Club H is about 2 blocks longer, but I do believe it'll be worth it!
I have really mixed feelings about this place.
Some background to be clear: my building gym is run by this Club H and is $10 less than a monthly membership at the main gym.
On the gym side:
The customer service needs a serious overhaul. The gym upstairs frequently has broken machines (last I counted was 5 and they fixed 1 and I fixed 1). To get their attention required an ENORMOUS effort on my behalf - you'd think I was using a free gym. I spoke to a woman surveying the gym, and left two notes for the manager at the front desk. Then, I finally sent them an email and one of the three pieces of broken equipment was fixed. Since then, two more machines need fixing and I'm dreading going through the process again. They make it very clear they don't care about maintaining the gym.
On the smoothie/juice bar end:
The bar is great but only because of the baristas. I constantly see random people walking behind the bar and helping themselves to whatever they like, sometimes even when there is a line of customers waiting. Additionally, one morning I was there to get a shake, and what seemed like the owner/manager, actually yelled at a new girl because she was missing a piece of her uniform. I completely understand the need to enforce rules, but don't yell at your staff in front of customers. It's rude and frankly, I don't really care to hear shouting in the morning. They really seem to have no sense of tact or decorum.
The only reason this place earned two stars (and not 1 or 0 if possible) was because the staff that works the juice bar is super nice and always pleasant to deal with. Be nice to them!
Gave this place the one-day-trial spin on my search for a new, more convenient gym. Honestly, I have no idea what the *bleep* I was thinking.
Okay, no, that's a lie, I know what I was thinking. This place is pretty. REALLY pretty. The advert photos were pretty, and upon stepping inside, I realised that the real thing looked a thousand times better. This is not a gym, it's a bloody day spa that just happens to have gym equipment. I'm a bona fide gym rat, so these accoutrements aren't NECESSARY for me to like a gym....but I'm also a girly-girl, so they definitely help....especially at these prices.
The sales rep was curt, but not offensive....at first. She showed me around, etc, etc, and then off I went to work out. I must say, the gym is quite user-friendly, and the locker rooms have all the amenities I could possibly dream of. I worked out for about two hours, then went back to the rep's office to meet with her before heading back to enjoy the sauna (which, that particular day, I was REALLY looking forward to) When I stepped into her office, the tone changed from curt to....well, a bit nasty, and very pushy....and when I say pushy, I don't mean, 'I really want to make this sale' pushy....I mean, 'I'm the freakin devil and your soul is now MINE' pushy. I wanted to get the hell away from her....but, honestly, was still considering joining up, since the rest of my experience so far was quite enjoyable. So I told her to give me till I was done with my sauna and shower (so she could take her PMS pills), and we'd talk money.
As I said, I wanted my damn sauna. It just happened to be closed for cleaning when I got back to the locker room, which I didn't mind (too much), since I have had my share of bad experiences with filthy saunas. What I DID mind, however, was how utterly RUDE the cleaning staff were about this....acting as if I were barging in on something incredibly important just for asking how long I'd have to wait. I did wait, but mentally took points off the club's score, since honestly, if I'm going to be paying that much for membership, I'd like to not be regularly told off by the cleaners. After all was said and done, though, I was still pretty happy, and despite some setbacks, was ready to become a member.
Upon getting dressed and gathering my things from the locker, I was approached, in the locker room, by the sales girl, Rani. I was a bit surprised, but whatever. She started her nasty routine again, right there in the freakin' locker room (I guess I took too much time waiting for the sauna)...but this time wasn't pushy or salesperson-ish....just rude. Points were dropping off by the second. But I didn't decide this place was NOT for me till she came out with this: 'Do you, like, have a JOB?'
Yes, it was a Tuesday afternoon, but as I'd explained to her when we first met, I was on my way from my doctor's office up the block. AT THE CANCER CENTRE. I explained to the idiot what exactly I do for a living, repeated the reason I wasn't working that day, and finally gave her a crash course on what an oncologist is. I really hope one day she grows some tact.
If I could give this club one bit of advice it'd be this: you charge THAT much, you can afford to hire staff who aren't complete horses' asses.
UPDATE: The trainer has since called...so maybe they are starting to get the training program into the same shape the rest of this great gym is in.
I've been a member since December and I am enjoy showing up there to work out each day. The locker rooms are clean, the steam room is divine, it is rarely too crowded and the classes are dynamic and challenging. I also enjoy the low-fat muffins at the cafe in the entrance.
My only complaint is the trainers. The membership came with two training sessions and after several cancellations by my original trainer (I showed up at 7:30 am, he didn't) I was given an elite trainer. The new trainer was excellent and I decided I wanted to use the sign-up gym dollars they gave me to schedule more sessions. He said he'd call that week- its two weeks later and I'm still waiting. I've now been stood-up and ignored. If it were a guy I'd take a hint.
Seems odd that their trainers are so hard to schedule - are they not getting enough money for meeting with clients? It is a shame because everything else about this club is run so smoothly- if only the training could get up to speed.
I got a membership here when I first moved to the city as it is right by my apartment and is incredibly convenient.
Overall it is a nice gym, equipment wise. Everything is new and well maintained. The layout on the other hand is jacked up. They have the equipment spread out all over the place and overall it isn't well organized. I do give them bonus points for having a real Olympic lifting station complete with bumper plates. They also have kettlebells which is cool, too bad they only go up to 16kg (35lbs).
Here are the biggest downsides to this place: an ungodly amount of wannabe meat head douche bags who all want to stand in front of the mirror. Also most of the people there aren't interested in working out hard or properly. So if you are a more kind and less critical ass then I am this may not be an issue for you.
Also it can get crowded at the usual busy hours of 6-8. Mornings are pretty dead though and are the best time to go if you are actually interested in accomplishing something.
Overall nice amenities with really lame clients.
I have been a member of this gym for about a year now and absolutely LOVE it!!! I have been to many many gyms in the city - including various Crunch locations, a few NYSC locations, and Equinox - and none even compare.
I even went to Equinox last week to try out a fitness class, I tried to stay afterwards to take advantage of the so-called "luxurious" gym, but couldn't even! I was so fed up with the poor layout, lack of equipment, and lack of NICE equipment, I ended up leaving Equinox to finish my workout back at my beloved Club H.
The people at Club H are wonderful, the trainers are knowledgeable (and patient with me when I harass them with a million questions), and the classes are awesome - totally addicted to spin and Vanita's pump classes! The gym is also super super super clean - I recently just had a conversation with a fellow member about how he had forgotten his flip-flops for the sauna, but figured it was no big deal since the staff is always cleaning so he didn't have to worry about germs.
I could go on and on about how much I love this gym. I practically live there... if you go to Club H and are reading this, you probably know me LOL!
UPDATE:
After I posted a negative review about some pretty negative first experiences with the club I was contacted by the manager and given a free 3 month trial to check out the club in better detail. The changed staff and made a genuine effort to fix the big problems. That's great.
I think it's well priced for a high-end club as well.
BUT- it's pretty much only a good deal if you live/work very close to a location (duh) and are more excited about a 5star environment than being a fitness/sports freak.
Pros: It's always clean, it's pretty and lux, the mornings are amazing and it's actually really nice to have the club/spa combined. Andrew at SpaH is an *amazing* masseur. But I think they do a great Spa and a so-so fitness club.
I do like the music and that's the first club I can say that about. If you're a bit above or below 30, it's probably perfect for you too.
Cons: Evenings are poorly organized, facilities haphazzard at those times
(sauna never on & no one knows how to turn it on... kind of a bummer in winter)
and seems to shut down earlier than advertised. It's probably a result of not having enough members with an interest at that time, but I wish there were more classes during lunch hours or later in the evenings.
It's also a bit of a demographic thing. I like sports freaks who are into fitness and the demographic here seems to be white collar types who want to avoid the yucky masses. They're a little less in shape to start with. That could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you feel...
Earlier Review:
The club is incredibly clean with all new equipment and looks very plush. It also appears to be totally empty most of the time...
My mid-day visit with the sales rep was amazing! I was ready to join. But then I got to experience the customer service. The first little thing was that all the trainers pigging out on burgers in the glass walled office. Motivation?
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Having this mean, petty experience was definitely not how I wanted the day to end. When I am in the lockers to shower at NYHRC 10 minutes before closing they are polite and upbeat and always helpful. I've never been told I can't shower or been insulted in over 2 years.
Some thing's wrong: perhaps they need to pay their cleaning staff more and teach them that kindness begets kindness. As for me, I'll happily go a few blocks farther or stretch until the treadmills are free as long as I'm not in a negative environment.
Have been a member since they opened. Nice facility and the Yoga director used to run my old studio so she's rad.
Also like that the weight equipment is spread out so it feels less like a boys only area.
Steam room rocks and the people are all really nice!
* Big open windows facing 34th Street while you spin or play on the machines
* Spa-like locker room area with wooden lockers, fancy tiled showers with 10" shower heads, and a large steam room the size of some studio apartments in Manhattan
* Yoga classes
My personal recommendations for classes are as follows:
- Cheetah for Kick It and and Pump
- Tammy for Rebounding*
- Andi for Hip Hop
- Paul for Vinyasa Yoga
* I absolutely -adore- Tammy's Rebounding Class... it's so much fun!!!
each individual gets their own mini trampoline to jump on, and with Tammy as an instructor the class is delightfully fun! ~ with her sunny disposition and cute dance moves
- an amazing workout... much more intense than you'd imagine by just watching someone else do it
needed to ck out gyms after the recent closing of The Gym *sniff sniff*. one of the recommended places was Club H Fitness. started my wk trial on Monday and I Love it. it's exactly what I look for in a gym: spa like, not too crowded, not too big, and most importantly AMENITIES. the locker room is beautiful, towels galore, wooden lockers, toiletries, hairdryers, beautiful blue tiling in the large showers, relaxing clean steam room and sauna, etc.
other pluses:
the weight training class I took was great.
they have locks and ipods for you to use if you forget.
the cafe has good bites and at a reasonable price.
my fav thing about this place is the cold towels they have when you really need the cool down. Very refreshing
this is stupid but the only thing I don't like is the shower gel bc it kind of smells like pine sol.
Damn, I wish the place was closer to my office *sniff sniff*
My husband and I joined this gym a week ago, and IT ROCKS!
It's state of the art, impeccably designed and decorated (by the same guy who did "The Westin Workout" at Westin Hotels), has great equipment, and amazing classes. Plus, I actually LIKE going to the gym.
Rebounding Class with Blake and Spin Class with Amy are MUSTS!
Can't say enough good things about this welcomed addition to the neighborhood.
My friend joined this because she had a corporate discount. Looking for a gym, i did the free 1 week trial. This has to be one of the best gyms i've ever been to. When you walk in, it smells like a spa. Comparing this to Crunch, the Y, and Chelsea Piers, the best thing about this place is the cleanliness of the locker room. There's 1 or 2 ladies in there constantly cleaning every single thing like every 2 seconds. The sauna and steam room are also constantly being sanitized. In the gym, there's always a full pitcher full of sliced lemons and sometimes oranges for those who don't have waterbottles. There are TVs on every treadmill machine and the weighmachines are split into two diff sides of the room so that it's not like how it usually is at all other clubs (all the men on one side weight lifting while all the women are on the other side on treadmills & elipitcals). The staff is always very friendly and helpful. I was so close to joining, but opted for Chelsea Piers instead for the sole reason that they have 3 full bball courts.
FYI, being in Murray hill, 90% of the members are in the 21-35 age range.
Really beautiful facility- everything is brand new and top of the line. The people are extremely friendly, and I love the set-up/lighting/music. They have water with lemons for you, and a bowl of apples for after your work out. The dressing rooms are like a spa, and the sauna and steam room are clean and sooooo nice after a hard workout. I personally think its better than an Equinox, and it barely costs more than NYSC, which looked more like the local Y. Plus their hours are better- they open @ 5am so I get to go before work in the mornings. I actually enjoy going to the gym now.
Joined this gym because a friend referred me. I would give the place 5 stars except they advertise 3 different levels of training, but only offer the higher 2. The music could also use some changing.
I love going to this gym in the middle of the day when no one else is around. I used to be a part of Crunch and realized that having natural light coming in when working out is quite soothing without that dungeon-esque feel. The entire place is kept spic and span. The shakes are pretty tasty as well.
As much as I love the place, I hope it doesn't get bombarded with new members...
Ugh, ugh , ugh! I visited this location a few weeks ago in what i thought would be a nice trial with my 1 day pass. My gym membership is ending and i actually would entertain the thought of going somewhere new. Club H is gorgeous the moment you walk in-but read on...I have never felt so pressured in my entire life. I felt like was being forced into buying a time share or into some religious cult. The day pass was free and i was wondering if i would have just paid for the day rate, would i have been pressured the same way. I was brought into one of the manager's offices. He sat me down for like 25 minutes and went over this huge sheet about why i would or wouldn't join. I hadn't even seen the facility yet and he was going over all these different numbers/rates trying to swing a deal with me like a used car salesman. Time was ticking away and a half an hour later he shows me the gym. He actually took me to the snack bar to show me the sandwhiches. Can you imagine? Naming off almost every f**** sandwhich on the menu..still waiting to see the gym. He then takes me through the spa and interrupts the workers there who were waiting on people. It reminded me of going to church as a child and everyone is really super nice and scary cuz they want you to buy into their beliefs. Anyhoo, we finally go to the gym, locker room ,etc. lovely space. Really lovely. When i stopped or wanted to see the cardio he seemed annoyed. Clearly he had 1 thing in mind-sell, sell, sell! Asking me the whole time if i would join, how does this feel etc. Well it felt like pressure and it really sucks cuz all i wanted to do was work out. So an hour later, i kid you not we return to his office. I was so angry and annoyed at the time he had wasted that i went off on him. I said if you are trying to sell memberships, you need to completely rethink what you're doing. You have completely turned me off from ever joining this gym. You have wasted my time and not even let me enjoy the experience or let the product sell itself. Less is more buddy. boy was i angry!! If you can handle the pressure then by all means try it out. I would never return here and wouldn't even think about giving them a dime. enough said
