I always have a really god time at Club Deluxe.  I remember the first time I went here.  I had just finished dinner with a group of friends and we sat down.  The server told me that the pizza was really f'ing good.  We ordered one, not because we were hungry, but just because of his enthusiastic endorsement!  I got to admit the pie wasn't too bad.

There are 2 reasons to go to Club Deluxe though the Mojitos (are really strong and good) and the music.  Free live Jazz Friday nights never disappoints.  Its a great place to go with a group of people too.  I like taking my out of town friends here to get away from the tourist traps in North Beach and get a taste of an authentic San Francisco Jazz Club.

Kristin's review just below mine, is exactly right. When Giovanni goes away, we cry. Club Deluxe *is* a magical place that has been my favorite neighborhood club/bar/venue/pizza provider for so many years.

When you order the Spa Collins, ask for Hendrick's gin. It really opens up the flavors and gives it a crispy effervescence. I used to order it with vodka, but now I know gin is the way to go.

And yes indeed, this is the best greyhound or salty dog you will have in SF. Hand -picked fresh grapefruits are sliced in front of you, and juiced into your glass on the bar-mounted juicer.

This place makes an Old Fashioned with soda water. Both bartenders, too. And according to Wikipedia, Old Fashioned afficianados despise this. However, you made it up with some fancy mustaches.

Since our group was about 15+ deep, we worked out a deal with the doorman, which was rather nice (sorry if I just got you fired). The music was jamming but the place sure was packed. Not sure if this is the norm, but it didn't bother me too much.

My new favorite place to unwind.  A great jazz club with an easy vibe that invites you to kick up your feet and chill.  I discovered this gem ( I've unknowingly walked by many times and never noticed it) while following my favorite SF bartender, the lovely Sarah, to her new digs.  She works Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4-9 and makes my happy hour very happy indeed.  From fresh squeezed oranges and grapefruits to bundles of mint your cocktail very well may have antioxidant properties, a great excuse to have more than one.

I have now twice ordered Giovanni's Artisan pizza and am dead serious when I say I crave it on a daily basis.  It is true Neapolitan style, the mozzarella just melts in my mouth.  The crust is thin but not too thin, and soft and crisp at the same time.  Try the Margherita by Moonlight: Classic tomato, mozzarella, olive oil and sea salt.  You won't be disappointed. I also have tried the Murder by Midnight (house speciality) which has truly fresh tomato, mozzarella, prosicutto, arugula, n shaved parmigiana.  Pizza is usually to be shared but I don't want to share Giovanni's pizza with anyone.  Get your own!

i'm a really big fan of live music in general and especially live jazz. no, i don't really know the difference between good and bad jazz but it never matters, i can sit and listen to it for hours. and i'm pretty sure this place has got it live almost every night of the week right? i think i also heard one time that monday night is comedy night? my sister went here one time for a burlesque show too.

the only reason i took off a star is because the drinks we got were super weak. this probably would normally mean that you'd take off more stars, especially for a place that's a supposed to be where you go to get good drinks. but the amount that i love live jazz kind of overrides that.

go here if you like live jazz as much as i do.

On our first visit, Club Deluxe might have been a great place to spend a Wednesday night--good live jazz, clean bathrooms, cool atmosphere--except for one guy, apparently an employee, whose sole purpose seemed to be to annoy customers until they left the bar.

I came in with a rather large group, so we chose a round booth in the back corner, even though it was covered with trash (greasy paper plates, crumpled napkins, many, many beer bottles). As we were settling in, Disapproving Guy (as we dubbed him. He never stayed long enough for us to figure out who he really was.) stomped over and complained about a tiny cafe table and chairs near our booth. "We have to keep this way clear!" he moaned, and then he moved the table to a nook where no person could possibly get to it, and inexplicably shoved its three chairs up into our booth before stomping away.

A few minutes later, he came back to clear the garbage from our table, all the while bitching at *us* for trashing the place. When we politely explained that, as he had actually seen, we had just got there, he snorted and stomped off...but he returned and kept clearing our things away, including drinks we were still working on! I or a friend would set a drink on the table between sips, Disapproving Guy would swoop in without saying anything, and the glass, along with half a drink, would be gone. Two of us lost our drinks this way. I managed to grab my friend's water bottle (which he had brought in with him) as Disapproving Guy was trying to snatch it away, and politely told him it was our bottle and we wanted to keep it.

"Why would you want to keep a water bottle?" he snapped.

"People fill them with water and drink out of them," I deadpanned.

Disapproving Guy sniffed and stormed away. Rather than continue arguing and buy more drinks we wouldn't be allowed to finish, my friends and I left the bar.

My advice for anyone considering an evening at Club Deluxe: Find out when Disaproving Guy works (or why the Hell he's there in the first place), and go any time but then. You'll probably have a lovely time.

For some reason it's always a weekend afternoon when I end up here. Oh, yeah, because going out at night around upper haight can suck pretty bad.

What I can tell you, is Club Deluxe is one of the more worth while bars in the neighborhood. Long before there was Bourbon and Branch or 12 other places in the city touting themselves as cocktail bars, there was Club Deluxe.
Making fantastic cocktails with fresh ingredients (read: whole grapefruit to greyhound in your glass in less than a minute) is what they do best. Try one on for size.

Smells like some damn good pizza is being charred here...and, I mean a lovely aroma that makes my tummy want some of whatever they are cooking up here...
Oh, and the bands that play here are cool cats, man. . . and cute too.
Nice Art Deco motif. Tiny ass bathroom, but not the smallest one in town.
I really like the nice, relaxing vibe here, and the great mix of people.  Seeing an older couple get up a dance at their table made me chuckle and nudge the old man and say. . . "yep, shoot us if we start doing that" . . . but, I don't think we'll even give a shit by then; only worries will be about breaking a hip while cutting the rug.

I am slowly but surely becoming a convert to this spot. The waitstaff has been awesome every time I've been there, the drinks are definitely stiff, and although I have never personally tried the pizza there, I have had a ton of folks swear to me it's amazing. That is on the "to do" list for next time methinks.

Anyway - they also have some good jazz and loungey type tunes in there, and the typical customers all seem to be fairly gregarious folk. Totally worthwhile to grab a cocktail or 4 when you're shopping in the Haight.

Oh yea, and try the "Spa Collins" - friggin' AWESOME.

Always a good time at Deluxe! It's only about 4 blocks from my house so convenience would be an understatement. They get amazing talent in this lil tiny place. Went for their comedy night last night which was great, we got a front row table and the artists were actually really hilarious. Come here to see live jazz all the time, not because it's right down the street, because their live jazz kicks ass! By far the best bar in the Haight-Ashbury district.

Monday night comedy nights ROCK! I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants!!! Best Mojito in town. If you can score the big, wide booths in the back, sit there! They're majestic, royal thrones.

3 things to know:

-Comedy night is a $5 Cover
-No ATM :(
-Katrina is not only a gorgeous, friendly, and talented bartender, but she's also in movies!

My first time here, to see Gonzalo Bergara play pre-Djangofest.

What a pleasant surprise!

Easy parking on a Saturday night,  chill barstaff (they replaced a drink that I found too sweet for free even though I offered to pay again--without attitude), super cute old couple who seem to run the place, and a clientele with a decent collective IQ level.

The space is intimate, laid-back, and non-judgmental.  Super casual, but saw a few cockily-tilted tando hats here and there.

I think I'll be back.

Checked this place out on a Friday night and was prett pleased. They had a live band that was just warming up when were there. We ordered up some drinks and the bartender was quick and effective, those drinks had balls.

The crowd was cool, laid back and I didnt feel out of place once. Quite a bit of business in their, but  not tooo much, ya know, just right.

Like Rod G. and others pointed out the place is cash-only wich can be pain in the ass, but their house, thier rules.

I've been looking around the city for cool jazz places and stumbled upon Club Deluxe.  I have been wanting to come here for a while and finally made it out last night.

The best thing about this place is that the music is free - no cover or entertainment charge.  The musicians do, however, come around with a tip jar which is fine.  The music is pretty chill.  Its not too loud so its still conducive to conversations.  Drinks are reasonably priced.  Chimays are like 6 or something and my Remy neat was 10.  The place isnt too big and fills up pretty fast.  A younger more hip crowd than some other jazz spots I've been to.  I would definitely come back.  Try to come early to steal a booth!

I saw a Gregg Allman doppelganger wearing sunglasses framed in flashing blue lights pull a knife on someone here, New Year's Eve circa 2006. Does it get any more bad-ass than that?

He actually cut this guy, who ran past me saying "Why does this shit always happen to me?" and when I asked his girl if he was OK she said "Only a flesh wound," the DJ's record when "zzzzzrrrrpppt" just like in the movies and crowd gasped as all hell broke lose and people wrassled on top of the turntables. Gregg's stunt double then locked himself into the bathroom.

Second. Best. New Year. Ever.

I don't go to the Haight that much anymore. I kind of od'd on it for awhile there, and now I'm finding myself in different stomping grounds, but when an old high school friend wanted to meet up for a drink, and he lives in the Inner Sunset, I thought, what a better way to foray back into the Haight than a casual Monday night drink up there.

I'd been here once before, but I'd like to "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" that experience (had nothing to do with the bar, mind you, but the company).

It was comedy night. Some of the comedians were rather funny, but a couple I couldn't help looking away from, and staring into my drink, rather than revel in the uncomfortableness that was their performance. The hostess (Rachel) was rather funny, though.

The drinks are standard, but the Newcastle on tap was warm, as my companion pointed out. I would like to see heavier pours on the fernet, but hey, that's just me.

I am a yuppie, according to a devestatingly handsome and unemployed schmuck who will remain unnamed. Apparently, frequenting the likes of Solstice (I know I low-starred them but dammit, it's pretty in there and so am I!), NOPA, Candy Bar, and Oola makes me eligible for yuppiedom. Oh yeah! According to said schmuck (albeit a handsome schmuck) I'm also a yuppie because I don't own a hooded sweatshirt or flat shoes...hmph! Oh! And because I don't have a love affair with dive bars or drink beer...

I happen to disagree.  But that is neither here nor there as once upon a night, we compromised and found ourselves at Club Deluxe, which is somewhere between the Ha-Ra and The Alembic. Deluxe?! I wouldn't go that far, but the fresh squeezed greyhounds were a nice touch, even if they were a little on the weak side. The bartenders are handsome and charming and will pump your order out fast. Drink prices are reasonable . I hear they make pizza here some nights, and when they do, they would prefer you not bring your own food in, lest they have to bawl you out in front of your hipster friends.

Oooh! Did I just say the "H" word? Yes I did. Because this place is full of them. Hmm...maybe I *AM* a yuppie after all...

**oh yeah! During the week the bar area's not too packed. Like, as in it's easy to help your drunk friend stagger down the long, narrow bar and out on to the street to catch a cab :)

I had my 30th birthday party at Club Deluxe on Saturday.  It ended up being a great night, but if fortune had not smiled upon me, I would have been totally screwed over by this bar.

The GF called to reserve the main seating area, talked to Big Al, and he said, "No problem, no charge, taken care of," the first time AND when she called him to confirm.

When I checked at the bar a couple weeks ago, they had nothing on the calendar.  The bartender said she could reserve some tables for me and I said great.  Jen called the bartender to confirm the day of, and again she said it was all set.

Less than two hours before the party, the bartender called me to say it was going to be busy, she'd reserve the tables, but if we weren't there, she couldn't rightly hold them if people are waiting.  No problem; I can be understanding.

We get to the bar a little ahead of schedule and she's already gone for the night and never even put the reserved markers on the table.  Thankfully, the party started at 8 and we were able to claim all of he tables by the window, but if business had picked up a half hour sooner than it did, I would have had dozens of grumpy, free-standing party-goers.

Despite the poor treatment, I can only knock them down one star.  The bartenders are top-notch (when they're making drinks), the venue is fun, the drinks are well-mixed, the band was outstanding and the PIZZA!  Oh lord that pizza is incredible.  Giovanni has taken over a derelict kitchen and made it a Neapolitan Crust Nirvana.

Live jazz in SF and no cover???

Damn, I probably just ruined this place by advertising that, but I can't but help share about this magical gem in SF!!! Haight street is full of random nooks and crannies and you never know who or what you are going to find, so my friends and I decided to be bold and just walk around Haight until we found something that sparked our interest....

Music to our ears, the sweet sound of a bass and the voice of a male singer instantly was our mating call for finding a bar to spend our night in. Club Deluxe looks like a small dive bar from the outside, but it is pretty great on the inside! Not fancy or trendy by any means, and the awesome bar tender who has a mustache straight from Captain Hook definitely added a nice unique touch to this place.

Their drink of choice here?? MOJITOS!!! Served in pint glasses too, so big mojitos (hence the all caps before!!) But this place is cash only so come prepared!!! There are some booths you can cuddle up in while catching on some of the easier jazz classics played by little duets here, making this place one of the coolest local spots I have ever been to.

True, the decor could be a little newer but hey it is the Haight area and it needs to look like hippie ville still ya know?? But there are bathrooms, alcohol, booths, live music, and Captain Hook's brother, so what else could you need??

A low-lit, laid-back saloon, damp and carpeted. It has some nice seats and a long, friendly bar. During happy hour Anchor Steam bottles are $3. They have Newcastle on tap, and tasty, fancy cocktails like the Spa Collins and Mojito. These house cocktails are good, and more reasonably priced than some other places in the city ($7).

The pizza is fantastic. It tastes completely unique. The crust is hearty but light, and crisp. We tried the Greek and then created our own. Both times the results were awesome. You will eat the whole thing and be unable to stop. They give you the bill for it on a post-it note. Ask the bartender if the kitchen is open; sometimes she'll take your order.

And please tip well!

I loved the Monday night comedy shows here. For $5 entry it doesn't get any better. If they door guy asked for $10, tell him you know better and got invited by one of the comics...

These guys on stage are hilarious. Up and coming usually but that keeps them raw and hungry. I've seen many stand ups at Cobb's in North Beach for way more money and less satisfaction.

As well, San Francisco is really dead on Mondays. Best entertainment for the night is here.

Fact:  Club Deluxe makes the best Sicilian style pizza in San Francisco.
Fact:  Club Deluxe is the best jazz club on Haight Street.
Fact:  "Deluxe" means "of light" - but it's best here when it's dark.   I think they were trying to be ironic.
Fact:  Club Deluxe puts up with my B.S.
Fact:  I once got a standing ovation and a curtain call at Club Deluxe for playing the part of a cactus in a burlesque show.
Fact:  Club Deluxe is very close to my house - and that's always a strong selling point for me.
Fact:  I have never puked in Club Deluxe.  (Truth be told, I've never puked at any bar in San Francisco ;)
Fact:  I don't remember who paid for my beer at Club Deluxe last night, but I can narrow it down to three candidates, and one of those is Rachel F.

Live Jazz is cool!  The band showing up over an hour late is not!  I ended up going home without even hearing any music or seeing a single band member.  Sucks because last time somebody actually showed up they were good.

Drinks are good, location is great, pizza is delicious though a bit small for the price.  I'd recommend checking this place out, even though the name makes it sound like some douche-bag bar.

If you're just looking for a place to sit down and have a drink with a friend, and you happen to see an open table or bar stool here, don't hesitate:  grab it.

What you'll get will be great, stiff drinks poured by a charming bartender, some live smooth jazz that doesn't make it too loud inside to hold a conversation, and great people watching (for the 35-and-over set).

My Deluxe Bloody Mary was freakishly awesome, and came with almost the equivalent of a whole salad:  a pickled bean, three tiny olives (the best kind), a pepperoncini, a carrot (?!), and a huge celery stalk.  YUM!  And the marys are perfectly spicy and full flavored.  I like it when I can see big specks of green and red stuff in the mix - that means they make their own.

My boy ordered a makers on the rocks.  The bartender poured, and poured a bit more, and looked me in the eye, and poured more, and still one more splash.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go back to this bar, given the incredible array of options that San Francisco offers.  However, next time I'm in the neighborhood I'll definitely make a pit stop.

So I went here a couple weeks ago and had a blast.  I had just been down the street at Cha Cha Cha and feeling pretty good from the sangria there... I walk in with my date and you've been transported to another world.

The decor looks like it hasn't been touched since the 50's, the hand-squeezed drinks are delicious (and cash only), and the friendly people are all about the music.  Also, there is the same cellphone coverage in there as the nation had back in the 50's.  None.

Free Jazz on the Haight nightly.  It's what you would expect from the Haight, but don't often find.  The people, drinks, music are all top notch, and the staff is personable and funny.

Haight street, we may still become friends.

I'm not a pink-drink kind of guy.  Pretty much stick with a g&t in the summer and a scotch in the winter.  Beer, wine, fine.

But I enjoy their greyhound.  I mean, they squeeze the grapefruit right into your glass.

The new pizza guy cooks up his thing in the back.  I don't usually like pizza.

Deluxious.

The bartender knows me (and what I order) even though I'm only in there about once every three months these days.  A few of my friends' bands have played it.  A ten year old said something about carpet munchers in his standup routine.

Club Deluxe is a magical place.  The vibe is low key and comfortable.  Some what of a mashup of decades in its decoration -- diner booths, tall bistro tables, classic bar with funky SF art murals along the walls. The inside can be both bright and dark at the same time.  Darker appropriately near the bar area, and lighter in the section where most people dine. Giovanni is a wizard of uber tasty pizza creations.  Thin crust Sicilian style that have the best ingredient combination.  And Giovanni is usually willing to throw a special request together if you want to order off-menu.  The drinks are equally top notch.  And stiff.  Everything is fresh squeezed and sampling the Spa Collins is a must.  Also: best greyhounds in the city. Which is saying a lot because I generally do not like grapefruit. They frequently have jazz bands which adds to the low key and comfortable vibe.  And sometimes stand-up comedy.

Sometimes Giovanni goes on extended fishing trips.  Which he greatly deserves for what he gives us with Club Deluxe.  But it also means no pizza.  But you can still hang out at the bar, drinking Spa Collins, listening to jazz and silently weeping about the pizza you wish you had.

This place is awesome for just stumbling in and finding something fun going on. Burlesque shows, comedy shows, birthday parties...

A nice vibe with no attitude and delicious (if a tad pricey) spa collins drinks. I've not had an opportunity to taste the pizza here yet but I have heard great things about it.

I'm holding back a star only because the drinks I like are a wee expensive and one of the female bar staff could look a little less glum at times.

I love Club Deluxe. It's a great, very legit jazz club that has sort of a retro look on the inside. It kind of gives me the vibe of being in a really big Airstream trailor - well, how I would imagine that to be. And I mean this in a really good way!

The bartenders are friendly, I've gotten some great cocktails, and the other patrons at the bar were very cool. It's also very laid-back - it's not your typical jazz club which requires a drink minimum and socializing is discouraged. There are two rooms, the lounge and the bar, which is great for people who want to hear music but still want to socialize.

I don't normally chat it up with strangers, but there was a couple sitting at the bar with me, two older men, and they were a riot. It felt nice to be comfortable out late, by myself, having a couple drinks and listening to some good jazz. I'd venture to say this club most normally draw a pretty cool crowd, because after all, I don't think a lot of people randomly wander into a jazz club.

Swing by on a Saturday night! This is the only night I've been to Deluxe, but it's great.

I'm going to forget the horrendous first date I had last time I went here, and choose to remember the vintage leather bound black stools and stiff drinks instead. Some or most Saturday's the club is accompanied by a jazz ensemble and the usual suspects that follow them. It's a good thing that the music here is actually good, otherwise I would have been SOL on a stool with my vodka cran. The vibe is that of a true jazz club without making you feel like you're sitting in your grandparents living room listening to a scratched 45. I'm sure the particular ensemble we saw was quality as my date informed me that they played at his last wedding. Choose this spot  and be sure that if nothing else, the music can make up for even the scratchiest date.
