First a disclaimer: I'm nowhere near a sommelier but I do enjoy wine every now and then. PINKY'S UP.
After a shopping stint at Gilroy outlets, it was nice to wind down at this winery. A 20-30 minute drive, the drive was greeted with horses, cows, beautiful scenery, and secluded dirt roads. The entrance was a tad confusing since the driveway was so long, we thought the path was leading us to some sanctuary. But alas, we arrived at a picturesque setting; gravel road, Spanish-influenced architecture, and foliage everywhere.
I opted for the tasting but I don't remember much since it was a few months ago. I do remember their chardonnay was notable and the syrah was one I had a few helpings of.
In the end it was all about the experience, sipping wine in the mountains while watching the sun set.

Review from Matt H.
Wifey and I decided to go wine tasting on a tuesday. Strange yes, but it was good to get out. We were deciding between sonoma, livermore, and gilroy area. I deduced that the least amount of traffic would be if we were coming back from Gilroy area and so away we went (no seriously, while Livermore and Sonoma are awesome locales for wine, traffic is key during a mid-week tasting event).
We arrived here first as we knew that Clos LaChance was going to represent one of the better wineries in this region as well as one of the more expensive.. so we wanted our taste buds to be on top of their game. We had our daughter with us too and needed somewhere nice and quiet. (yes we are THOSE parents, but she's 5months old... wait that doesn;t make it better? :P)
Anyways, Kristin was working the tasting room and dropped some knowledge on us. Both the wifey and I have been wine tasting in the bay area for maybe 7 years... and we learned new stuff. We also found another die-hard fan of Jersey Shore. Kristin also gave generous pours for tasting, allowing us to share wifey's 5$ general tasting and me the reserved 10$ tasting. We also shared the dessert wine flight which by the way is COMPLETELY worth it.
My recommendation is for the dessert flight to include some sort of chocolate/dessert. Why? Because when you serve chocolate or something else, you really get people amped up to buy a dessert wine. Its taste association at it's greatest. Of course the dessert wines here don't need the accompaniment, but nothing is wrong with more bottle sales ;)
Anyways - great tasting menus, the option to buy a glass of wine and chill on their beautiful grounds and really friendly people. Just a totally awesome experience. Highly recommend it! -

Again on the SCC Wine Passport Weekend and apparently the weekend before the Fry's open and where poor planning is involved.
I am not totally faulting the winery for the massive media trucks or the confusing directions to the winery but the fact that the lone tasting table was set with one guy who seemed to be more interested in talking to others is understandable he is a great talker but I'd like to know about the wine. There also was some other special event that was being held outside so when people walked outside they were intruding on it. It may have been better just to have the passport tasting at the bar instead of an oddly placed single table across the way. If you wanted to segregate it the foray would have been a better choice.
Nice wine but chatter box wasn't attentive enough to pay attention to all the customers he should of had back up.Comment from Cheryl D. of Clos LaChance Winery 10/10/2011

We had our wedding here and had the most amazing day of our lives. Our wedding coordinator, Michele was so incredibly helpful and made our day so stress free, it was unreal. We felt so taken care of. Her hospitality was amazing and the venue itself was so beautiful we didn't really have to do any work to decorate it. Good wine, breathtaking views, great layout for an event and all of our friends said it was the best wedding they had ever been to. We plan to make a trip there every year for our anniversary. Thank you, Clos La Chance!

I can't believe how many people like this place. I've been here 3 or 4 times because the people I'm with normally request to see this place. After though, they wonder why the wines they buy aren't as good as the ones they have open for wine tasting here. I've never had any wines I like here and the service has always been something less desirable; either they are rude or pompous. There is no happy middle ground. :-( I will have to admit that the structure is magnificent. It's a very beautiful place. Personally, I would skip this place and hit any of the numerous other wineries within 3 miles of here.

I've created many memories on their picnic grounds celebrating birthdays, girls day out and some musical events.
Lush vineyards and pleasant scenery, there is a much to be said about their keep. Their wine is not my favourite in the least but comparable to above average beverages. Having a membership here is the best way to take care of parties and full use of their benefits. -

A picturesque winery that reminds me a little bit of the wineries in Napa. t's "the big kid on the block" compared to most of the smaller boutique wineries in Morgan Hill and they offer free tastings to Yelpers! (Otherwise $5 per person to taste 5 wines out of a list of about 10.) Gorgeous vistas, rolling hills, a golf course (I know, I'm a golf nerd now!), rows and rows of vines, lovely wines, excellent service... It's 5 stars all the way! Bought a bottle of their viognier which we took to dinner at Sam's Chowderhouse last night (in Half Moon Bay -- if you haven't been and love seafood, you must go!) It paired perfectly with each of our seafood dishes!
If you are in the neighborhood and you love wine or are looking for a venue to plan a wedding or event, definitely check this place out. I've already told a few of my friends about it who are looking to get married locally :)
Anyways, I will be back soon to pick up more viognier! -

This is a gorgeous winery, but to be honest, the wines are mediocre. For a vino lover and a frequent Napa and Livermore visitor, I thought these wines were really just ok - nothing to rave about.
The flights are quite cheap, $10 or complimentary if you mention Yelp.
This place gets packed on weekends because it's one of the nicest spots in the Gilroy area, so go early! If you want to be impressed by a beautiful estate and beautiful grounds, this is the place to visit.
Plenty of weddings are hosted here! -

You have got to be kidding me.
I was the driver for some family friends this passport weekend and this place was by far the worst winery we went too. First of all, because I wasn't drinking I was looking forward to eating and spending time with friends and family. Of course, there was no food. Not even cheese or crackers to go with the wine.
Second, the bar tenders were rude and arrogant. Let me rephrase that. The greasy, overly tanned, arrogant a$$hole with the perm was rude. He was bossy and class-est. We all went to the wineries to have a nice relaxing weekend, and we dressed as such. He ignored the group I was with to help people who dressed up for the occasion. What does it matter? Everyone I went with is a member of at least 6 local wineries, not necessarily for the wine but because they enjoy being there and for the service. It's the whole package they are looking for. This guy was ridiculous. He even blew me off when I went to tell him that someone had dropped their glass out side and there was broken glass everywhere. He literally dismissed me.
Anyway! The grounds are lovely so I would suggest going to look. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut save your money for a place worthy of it.Comment from Cheryl D. of Clos LaChance Winery 10/10/2011

Gorgeous picturesque scenery. I had a field trip to visit this location and Roy was so awesome in sharing his knowledge with our class. Do take advantage of this beautiful location, winery and their knowledgeable staff.

First winery stop and i was glad I chose this place for our first winery of the day for a Sunday afternoon.
We heard Yelpers get to taste for free, but the female staff wasn't sure but she still gave us free tasting. Regular tasting was suppose to be $5 and you get to taste about 6 wines. Good pour portions. Their glasses have lines so they know where to pour till.
Staff was very nice and friendly.
I really liked the Rose wine.
We also tried the dessert ($5) and spring ($12) flights. All the pours are 3 oz which was nice since was cheap but still the same amount of pour as the spring flight.
We also got goat cheese, salami, and crackers to snack on while we drank our flights at the back garden area. It was too crowded at the front picnic areas. But we got our own privacy.
Very big property with nice picnic areas. A lot of tables and benches to sit. Pretty scenery and vegetations. There are a lot of bees though.
There was a guy performing music when we walked by to the tasting room. You can also order flights and wines by the glass outside near the parking lot picnic area.
Lots of parking spaces in front and back.Listed in: Morgan Hill and Gilroy…

I would like to amend my previous review. Now that I have both sides to the story, I think I can surmise what happened: an unfortunate miscommunication between the head of our group and the winery staff. The staff did have the tastings ready, but in a side room. Our group was planning on doing the tastings, but when the ring-leader heard we would be in a side room it was decided to buy bottles and take them outside to drink instead, since he had chosen the place because of the GORGEOUS views. A breakdown in communication, in part due to this being the last stop on our wine tour, is my guess.
I am so glad that Cheryl from Clos LaChance responded to my Yelp to clear things up. Even though it was still a bit unprofessional to hear the staff complain, I really would like to actually experience a tasting, so I can try some reds, as I only got a chance to try 2 whites. Thank you Cheryl!1 Previous Review: Show all »

After visiting many wineries in the East Bay and researching those in the wine country we felt that Clos LaChance offered some of the most stunning views for the best price. Some wineries do not shut down for your wedding, but Clos LaChance does and this was important to my husband and I. The view from the ceremony site and reception veranda is spectacular and feels like you are far, far away from any major city...very Tuscan atmosphere. Our wedding coordinator was Michele and she was outstanding. Her response time to emails was incredible and she is extremely knowledgeable about wedding planning and gave us great ideas and advice. Our wedding seems like a magical dream all because of the beauty of Clos LaChance!

First time I came here I didn't know about the free tasting so ended up paying the $5 each. The second time I was researching the area I seen it for their own Yelp special, free tasting. All I had to do was mention it.
So when I did mention it on the second round, they asked what I was talking about. WTH?
The place is nice with a beautiful bar counter, reception area and lounge area. Can see how many people would like coming up here for weddings. Only thing is little if any reception, so don't depend on your cell phone.Comment from Cheryl D. of Clos LaChance Winery 6/20/2011

I have visited Clos La Chance a few times in the past couple months, the location is so beautiful, if I were to have an event/wedding, their property in San Martin would be the perfect back drop! I was there for the http://Frys.com Open and ate lunch on the patio. The food was TO DIE FOR, their chef created mouth watering prawns in a chili Thai sauce and lobster mac and cheese with a whole claw on top... so good! I have been craving it since. I have always been a fan of the CLC Zin but I especially enjoyed the Viognier on the warmer day I was there. I saw the proprietors, Kristin and Cheryl, walking around checking in with guests to be sure they were happy. CLC always offers a great place to get-away from the hectic pace of life and just enjoy the company of friends over a nice glass of vino in an amazing environment. See ya soon, Clos La Chance!

LOVE this gorgeous winery. Was here this last weekend for a private event (not my first time here) and I can't say enough great things about the winery, the setting, and the staff. Picked up some great wines during a big blowout sale (and the Viognier .. my fave ever but not on sale). Wish I could get married again because this place is insanely beautiful. Did the VIP tour and our guide was Ian. He was extremely knowledgeable and made our tour very fun and educating.

Tuscany without the airfare!
Our daughter's wedding was here in September and for the 165 guests who attended it was perfect! For us, it was sublime.
From the service and the year of planning and coordination, Clos and Michele were exceptional and created the night from which life tine memories are made.
Every phone call, every concern was handled with kindness and patience. Our "blended" family was given the attention and courtesy necessary to make this the perfect evening.
The venue was beautiful and the evening was too!

This is one of our favorite wineries. The view is amazing and the ambiance is elegant. My husband is a golfer and gets misty eyed staring out across Cordevalle Golf Course next door while we sip a selection.
We've been there a few times now. Once, for an afternoon "date", once to meet friends and once for my birthday. All our visits have been better and better. The birthday visit was wonderful. Had a lovely picnic under the arbors and was given a free tasting (plus an extra I ended up buying) We lucked into a "cellar sale" where they were selling off excess wines to make room in their warehouse. Quite a bargain for some really wonderful selections. Did I mention they didn't charge for tasting the 10 "Cellar Sale" wines? Our Favorite was "Split Personality" with flavors that burst individually across the palate. Wish I had bought a few more of that one. We left with 1/2 a case and spent about $40.
We are not professional wine conessieurs, but enjoy a nice bottle of wine. We were not made to feel uncomfortable for being less knowledgable about wine tasting. They offered terminology and helpful suggestions. On my birthday they made me feel special. Highly recommend a picnic. Bring treats for the kids and make it a family day. It's lovely even on a hot summer day. -

This is the closest location for great wine near the San Jose/Gilroy area. Easy to find and under a short drive, Clos LaChance is a cute winery where you can get away from the bustling and hustling of city life. A cute little spot, you can have dinners, picnics, and even your wedding here!
We tried the Fab five tasting. For $5 per person (wine club members always taste free) with bartender Michael Angelo, we got to experience some of their most jeweled wines:
2009 White-tufted sunbeam Sauvignon blanc
2008 Santa Cruz Mountain Chardonnay
2008 Estate (New Release)
2007 Estate Zinfandel (Double Gold Winner)
2007 Estate Syrah
And then...free wine tasting (promotional!)!!! We got to try 8 selected wines from Chardonnay to Pinot. Yum. After trying out all the wines, we walked out with 15 bottles. Endless fun and cheap wine, now that's a deal! -

I really want to give this place five stars. The outdoor sitting area and the views are fantastic! But I was disappointed (very disappointed) by the tasting offerings. Most if not all the tasters we're there cheaper wines and as such we're not very good so after trying quite a few samplers we just blindly choose a bottle and took it out to the garden. The bottle we selected was very good as I Imagine many of there wines are but again I think they need to start sampling some of there better wines and price is not a factor. I will give this place another shot though and at least I know not to mess with the flights if there the same again.

The second my family stepped out of our vehicle, they were all buzzing about how fantastic the scenery was and how pretty all the plants were. I walked around with my gramma as she raved about all the different flowers--simply fantastic.
The tasting room was pretty big, but what caught our attention was the picnic grounds. Like many people have mentioned, this would be a beautiful venue for any celebratory event. And, luckily for us, they were also doing wine tastings outdoors. We had a great person pouring for us (Charles?), and he did a really good job of educating us on how to really taste the wine and the origins of the wines we were tasting. We loved the 2007 (or was it 2006?) Rhone Blend, and thoroughly enjoyed our picnic there.
Super family friendly, picture perfect, and excellent customer service. Overall, the wine was just okay--out of the 5 we sampled, we only truly liked one.Listed in: Thanks, yelp!, i'm sorry, did someone say…

Wedding Ceremony Review:
I had my wedding here in October 2008. For starters, my wife was not allowed to throw in her 2 cents on venue choice because I had this place already picked for us. I had been to a wedding at Clos previously and always said if I ever was sane enough to get re-married, this would be the place. Fast forward to early 2008, I bring the bride to be to Clos for wine tasting, and SLAM. DUNK. She loved it (I knew she would.)
I think it's safe to say that we had the greatest and most amazing wedding ever assembled at Clos LaChance Winery. We hired Michelle as our coordinator and she was awesome. The flower arrangements were spectacular, the photography was excellent, the food, catered by Cordevalle next door, was phenomenal. Our DJ was great, everything was great! The cake was delicious. I could go on...the key was that all vendors that my wife and I hired had either worked together at Clos for previous weddings or have done weddings at Clos and were familiar with the winery.
Let me put it this way: Our wedding was so phenomenal, it's been featured online. It wasn't due to us spreading the word either. It was just that awesome. Half of our friends were from Canada and to this day, they STILL talk about how awesome our wedding was. The scenery during the Autumn season at Clos is breathtaking.
Another reason why our wedding was the greatest and best wedding of all weddings at Clos LaChance? I truly believe we inspired most of our friends to either get married, or if they were already married at the time of our wedding, inspired them to bear children. THAT, is how awesome this place is, and how awesome our wedding truly was.
I highly recommend you get married here, even if you're already married. Your wedding won't be as epic as ours was, and you won't create families from being so emotionally overwhelmed by the haunting beauty of our ceremony, but it will still be pretty good, and reasonably priced as well.
Wine Review:
Based upon the wine consumption bill that I received shortly after, the Cabernet Sauvignon, 2006 I believe, was the most popular wine at our wedding by a 2-1 margin over the Chardonnays. The wine is excellent as well. Just thought I'd throw that in since this is, afterall, a winery. -
Review from Anna V.
5 stars for an absolutely beautiful, breathtaking property, and 3 stars for the actual wine. Wines are affordable and not bad.
The tastings are $5 for a pretty decent flight. Sometimes they have coupons for free tastings to promote the winery - you can pick some up if they pour at some festivals/events, or sometimes on their web site if you sign up for a newsletter. I actually found two coupons I had lost AFTER I went and paid for two tastings -_-... welp, guess I'll have to go baaaaack! :D
We took strolls around the property between tastes and took a lot of pictures. I can't believe that this beautiful winery is so close to San Jose! :)
They have very nice picnic areas with patio tables and chairs with umbrellas. I am definitely coming back to buy a bottle and settle down outside with a picnic lunch to enjoy the peaceful setting and the amazing view of the vineyard and hills.
This place would be amazing for a small-ish wedding (their indoor reception area is a bit small for large weddings). They have wedding photo albums inside their lobby - my friend and I peeked through a few of them. Absolutely stunning venue! -

Loved it!! It's such a beautiful winery. The picnic area is gorgeous!
Four of us visited here on a beautiful Saturday. The tasting room is pretty big. Their wines are.. not the best.. but ok. Their 2005 Amber Cuvee sparkling wine was really good. We also liked the Estate Petite Sirah, but we decided to purchase the Mountains Chardonnay for our picnic because it would go better with the food we brought plus it was a very warm day.
We LOVED the picnic area. The view of the vineyard is amazing! The weather was perfect for a picnic. We had a GREAT time and ended up spending the entire afternoon there. I will definitely go back. :) -

I went with a couple of friends who'd just been wine tasting in Napa and I was eager to show off the wineries in my neighborhood. We'd just done Sycamore Creek, Jason-Stephens, and Kirgin Cellars and we'd got bottles at each of them. My friends were bubbling with excitement, hardly waiting to show their finds to a friend of theirs in the wine business up north.
I'd never been to this winery, but it was near Kirigin and I'd found coupons on their website giving free tastings. I'm glad this was the case.
The winery facility is beautiful with lovely gardens, an amazing view, and pretty much the perfect spot for a wedding. The tasting room itself looked like a California hotel architect had tried to make something that looked like a French chateau. The room was very crowded with the tail end of a wedding party, but we took a space by a marble table off to one side, and the sommelier who served us was amazing and polite, and the wines....
The reds all tasted like pepper, tobacco, and leather, and we sadly had to agree that we would only use them in pasta sauce. The whites were forgettable except the semillon, which tasted astringent. One of my friends, a professional chef, said he knew what sort of clients they were trying to appeal to with the reds--charitably, people new to wine drinking who liked bold reds and didn't mind high prices--but unfortunately none of those clients were us.
We all had the same opinion: This was Chateau Nouveau Riche Yuppie.
We felt bad because the sommelier was so nice but there was no way we were buying any of these wines. We slipped him a tip instead and left.
I really hope the vintner gets his act together in years to come. There's obviously been a lot of money poured into this place with the facility and the gardens, but the quality of the wines left too much to be desired. -

WEDDING VENUE:
My fiance and I have always wanted a vinyard wedding but when we started calling places in Sonoma and Napa we realized that it might not work for our budget. Then I found Clos LaChance and talked to Kristin. I had never been to San Martin and hadn't heard of Clos but after talking to her I knew I had to see Clos and meet her.
Out of the 15 wedding venue coordinators we met, she was the best! She is so nice, professional and willing to work with you to make everything perfect for your wedding.
Now if you're just begining your search you'll soon realize that venue rental cost all depends on what is included. Clos includes SO much, even chivari chairs, which usually cost a ton more to rent and add a great look to your reception.
The whole venue is amazing and is a bit of an oasis out there. The ceremony site is beautiful but my favorite is the cocktail reception area in the olive grove. It is just perfect. They also have the BEST place for the bridal party to get ready the day of and is the only venue I saw that has a cool place for the groomsmen to chill before the ceremony.
I love the bar area, dacing area, etc. and the wine is great, too.
Anyone looking for a stunning vinyard wedding without a million dollar budget will love it here. You would be lucky to get married here and possibly work with Kristin. If you are reluctant to go out to San Martin because you've never been there or even heard of it, it's worth the drive out there to check out this venue. You will beyond pleased. -

5 Stars for the Picnic area. 3 Stars for the wine.
That pretty much summarized my experience at Clos Lachance.
Bring your picnic basket, grab a bottle of wine (more on the wine later) and enjoy your food at the breathtaking garden overlooking their beautiful vineyard. Life is good.
Unfortunately my experience at the tasting room was not so amazing. The $7 tasting fee (or $5 if you let them choose the wine for you) is not deducted with purchase. None of the wine were great and only very few that stood out. I prefer red wines but I found it hard to even pick one that I like. Out of everything I have tried only the 2009 White-Tufted Sunbeam Sauvignon Blanc and 2007 Late Harvest Zinfandel seemed interesting.
At the end we picked the 2006 Estate Petite Sirah to go with our picnic food. Wine wasn't spectacular but we had a wonderful time there. This is an awesome place to bring your date to, as long as he/she is not a wine confectioner.Listed in: Fun and Healthy Group…

This is a special place for my husband and I. The hubby was a wine club member for a couple of years before we met. He took me here during my first couple of trips to N. Cal (I'm from L.A) and instantly loved it. It became one of our favorite date spots. Less than a year later my then boyfriend took me there on a picnic for my birthday...little did I know that he was proposing to me after we ate our lunch. We considered getting married there but at the time they were booked for a year and half. After writing a sappy letter to the owner's daughter she made an exception and agreed to let us have our wedding there. After realizing how cold it was going to be at the time of the wedding (winter wedding), we opted to have it somewhere else.
Throughout the years I have taken many out of town guests here and they've always loved it. I've also organized a group picnic in their beautiful grounds. The different varieties of wine is great. The view is more than spectacular. The tasting room is beautiful. Clos LaChance is definitely the most beautiful winery within the MH/San Martin/Gilroy area. -

I visited this winery on Santa Cruz Mountain Winery Passport Saturday in November. It was the best winery out of four we visited then!
Our winery tour usually includes picnic. Unfortunately on this day the weather wasn't the best (occasional showers), but hardcore picnickers like us prepared the picnic anyway. The beautiful outdoor patio with nice tables and chairs was wet, but the staff suggested that we picnic indoor where the tables and chairs were provided by the tasting tables. The room was really grand with very high ceiling and the helpful and talkative staff was wonderful!! They also had great holiday sale (50%-70% off!) on selected wines. I'm not a big wine drinker so it's not fair to rate wines, but my friends were very happy with their wines.
We saw beautiful wedding photo albums too. When the weather is nice and warm, it must be superb!! I definitely want to go back in spring! Highly recommended :-) -

I'm SO GLAD i added a stop at Clos LaChance Winery to my road trip. A free wine tasting is just what i needed on Sunday at 11am in preparation for my camping trip!
The winery was beautiful and the people were awesome! I mentioned the yelp special offer and got the "Fabulous five" tasting for free. The two tasting associates Danielle and Michael Angelo were really cool. They didnt just make impresonal small talk, they really got to know us and were very entertaining! They told us about the history of the winery and wineries in the area.
I would highly suggest Clos La Chance Winery for the following reasons:
1. Free wine tasting for Yelpers
2. The drive out there is amazing beautiful!
3. The WIne is amazing
4. The property is beautiful and fun to explore -

The grounds here are easily the most picturesque in the SC Valley, but that was the only thing that really impressed me. I could see this being a great wedding venue, but I have some philosophical differences with the way they do things here.
The tasting room is large and modern, but the wine was pretty ordinary.
Whenever I go to a winery and I see three tiers of labels, it bothers me. It says, here's something affordable to the masses that it is made cheaply with cheap grapes from wherever. Here's something that's made with a little more care, as we grow the grapes ourself. And finally, here's where we're really going to gouge you because this is what we gave the most attention and care to. And gouge you they will, at $50 bucks a bottle.
I like my wineries to give 100% effort and care on everything. Instead of making 900 different wines, focus on making a few great ones. I guess they want to be like the Ferari-Carano or Mondavi of Santa Clara. No thank you. More power to you if you want to be a billionaire, but I'll give my money to the little guys. -

Our string trio performed at the beautiful, and beautifully run Clos LaChance Winery last weekend. It was totally gorgeous weather, wonderful staff and especially the coordinator. The timing for the ceremony and reception were right on the mark and their clients all appeared very relaxed and having a great time.
We look forward to performing many more weddings at this gorgeous venue.
