It's a Southern family tradition to vacation here.  Growing up, It was my family's fav. holiday spot.  It BLOWS The Breakers, Palm Beach away!!!!  You have to drive through the marshes to get onto the island which is really nice and peaceful.  In my opinion,  it is the absolute sweetest and most charming place.  With its luxurious set up (similar to Breakers PB, but better), the architecture and decor has that European feel but with the southern charm!

Theres so much to do- bike riding around the island, horseback riding on the beach, golf, tennis, shuffleboard by the pool, etc.

Also, lets mention the fact that they renovated and expanded the spa- making it somewhere around 60,000 sq. feet.  This is enough to make Sea Island my little heaven:)

Had the pleasure of staying at one of the Cloister Cottages and visiting their Spa & Pool.  Top notch everything!  The service at the Spa was as grand as the massage by Tim.  I left the Spa on my rented bike happy as a woman can be!  I strolled the grounds and checked out the grand homes in the area.  This is a vacation spot worth returning to!   The boys golfed both courses and prefer the Planation to the Sea Side although they say both are a must play. It would be hard to give them anything short of 5 stars!

+5 stars for the old Cloister, -3 for completely renovating one of my favorite spots on earth, +1 for making the renovations beautiful, -3 for cultivating an atmosphere for pretentious snobs, +1 for making the new hotel face the marshes (the only drawback of the old hotel was that for some reason it didn't). And +1 because no matter what this place will always have a special place in my heart. I hope I've done my math right.
The new Cloister is beautiful, and luxurious, and I'm glad I got to witness it in all its gaudy splendor. But as someone who's been visiting Sea Island since infancy (as a child and grandchild of the staff dancers), I really feel like the charm is gone. There are pools and cabanas and beachside bars galore, but it's just so over the top. Do people really need to rent out a poolside "lounge" for $1000 a day because their luxury suite is more than 20 feet from their preferred pool?! I'm sorry, I just found this "new and improved" hotel silly. The old Cloister was classic and understated. The architecture felt elegant without being overdone. This updated version just felt forced, and loud, and at times embarrassingly indulgent.
