"Go to place in the village for Marimekko raincoats and hats shaped like animals (for adults and children alike). Love it."
RIP. Cloak is no more.

God I love intelligent, sexy design! I'd been meaning to check this place out for quite sometime, and I heard they were having a big sale so I figured there was no time like the present. Now, while I have been called a designer whore (guilty as charged), even I could not bring myself to pay $900 for an AMAZING winter coat that I totally didn't need (and yes, that was the sale price) But the cut was perfect and interesting, the details were exqusite and and were I a rich man, I'd probably be wearing it right now. Yes, indoors, at my computer. I'd probably sleep in it, damn it! Staff was adorable and nice as well.
So why 4 stars? Well, I have it on pretty good authority that while this stuff is gorgous, it tends to fall aparpt far too soon for having paid that much for it. I'm more than a little sad about it, but maybe if I run into that coat at a sample sale or at Ina and its reduced enough for me to not to have to live in a carboard box for a month, I'll buy it.

Cloak is one of my favorite stores/labels in NYC. Every season has at least two items I am dieing to buy because of the excellent designs and cuts. The clothes all have a gothy/dark edge and Cloak is an awesome marriage between tailored clothes and streetwear.
It's disappointing to hear, but Cloak has had it's final season. Alexandre had an amazing vision with his line and he was a very nice guy too.

Alexandre is amazing.
He doesn't flash fashion at you...he makes you focus and notice all the amazing details that distinguishes Cloak for the amazing label that it is. The store decor is amazing with secret passage ways and huge dressing rooms (almost the size of a NYC studio!).
This is a must see if ever in the area. And don't be afraid of the sales staff...they are adorable and some of the nicest people working NYC retail. Thanks guys! I love the cardigan!

Cloak/Alexander Plohkov could have been the Helmut Lang of this generation. However, sad thing is not many these days are looking for a very New York, very dark, very downtown feel.
I mean what other designer in their right mind would have the courage to turn down the job as the designer of the revived (and albeit $$$$$ backed) Helmut Lang by saying "I didn't want to be responsible for the death of the name" at the hands of the contemporary (Barneys Co-Op market)?
Anyways, S/S 07 is their last collection so look for everything to be liquidated this summer.

So hip, so excellent, so well tailored! Everything about this label is amazingly well done and held to a consistent aesthetic - even the guy working in the store looks exactly as someone in such a place should - slightly traditional and unbearably cool!
A dear good friend of mine bought two coats here, the likes of which I have not seen anywhere else. A beautiful meeting of traditional English wool and tweed with urban cool lines. As close to couture as you can get in a boutique.
All the detailing is breath-taking!
Update: Designed by Alexandre Plokhov - a russian emigre. Makes me so proud!

If you want the most exciting menswear label (or label of any sort, really...) to come out of New York City in years, look no further. The boutique is amazing - it was designed to look like a 19th century gentleman's club. The back of the room is one gigantic bookcase, which opens (secret passage style) to reveal the tiny office and massive dressing rooms.
The customer service is wonderful, Both of the cute young things working there were more than happy to help. Be sure to ask them If you don't see your size; typically they hide a lot of sizes and different pieces you wont find on the floor in the drawers of that aforementioned bookcase/their tiny office.
ALSO: The returns policy is the best I have experienced. After emailing the head office about a problem with my jeans (which are still my favorites mind you, even though the hemming began to come out of the pockets). They offered to pay for the shipping of a new pair to San Francisco. All I had to do was plop them in an envelope and send them off (I opted to take them to my tailor instead).

it is my goal to own something so meticulously crafted as the pieces from cloak. and not just some accessory of the moment but something full blown from the current ready to wear collection...like a full outfit. alexandre plokhov can have my first born if i'm able to swap for the entire spring 07 collection.
i love the store. i like how serene the boutique makes me feel. it's quiet. there's no loud music, offensive smells (with retailers hawking its own perfumes and colognes), not much foot traffic, very dignified. the employees are very attentive...nice...super helpful. always scrambling to make sure they have your size. i love it!
definitely stop by cloak if you're in the market for a nicely tailored piece, that's unique, sharp but be prepared to dish out some major change.

This store is cool. And by cool, I mean James Bond cool. Not the Pierce Brosnan James Bond (he was just tacky) but the original James Bond of course. I could spend hours in this place. I love the secret passageway through the bookcase.
My dad came here to buy a coat. I must confirm that the stitching is amazing.

High end mens wear.
$$$
Edgy, darker, rocker style gear.
Love the quality and edginess of the fashion.
A must swing by place, but cost was a bit much for my taste..
Loved a HUGE scarf they had, but its was like 2-300$
When you've outgrown your mall fashion and ready to drop big bucks to look like a million bucks, then this place is your savior. Most pieces are in the hues of black, grey, violet, you know what I monotone mean. If you want classic tailoring with an edge, this is your stop. Now stop wearing that eurotrash and head on over to Greene street.
