Awesome. Stunning views. Live down the street from the cliff walk entrance, it never gets old. The only annoyance are the visitors taking up the whole trail obliviously walking with their fanny packs.
Lives up to the hype.

Staggering. The sea, the landscape, the mansions that you thought only existed in dreams.
Early in the morning or late at night. Or in the heat of the day. In winter or summer. It's a great walk and you'll never get tired of it. Even if it makes you tired.

I went to school at Salve and this was my getaway from the books. There are certain areas where you can climb down to the water but be careful! High tide comes in fast!
The Cliffwalk starts by 1st beach on Memorial Boulevard and wraps around the coast for a great biking, walking and stroller pushing trail. Nearing the end, it kinda gets cut off from broken rock paths. It is a tight path, so sometimes you have to do the single file but the views are breath taking.
Along the path, you will see Salve Regina, the Mansions and private homes. Definitely a go-to spot for the tourists but a must see if you are in newport.
Perfect for a weekend away from the city with someone special. The view is so stunning you will be bereft of words...
I came in January and despite the cold the experience was equally remarkable.

Even though I have walked the Cliff Walk a zillion times over the last 50 years, I have been reluctant to review it because it has been reviewed so many times before. So I will try to be succinct and give a different perspective.
First of all the best time to walk it is in the off season. Far less people and in fact I have done it in winter and not seen another soul the entire way. I have walked it in the rain, howling winds and snowstorms when the sea is very angry and the whole idyllic summer experience turns into a raging, ethereal inferno. Incredible views. but you have to show a bit of care you don't fall into the sea and die.
Also don't urinate in the two tunnels. I have seen people doing this on several occasions and it doesn't smell very good. They are porta potties at 40 steps on Narragansett Ave. if you need them.
Another good thing to have is one of those small books they sell everywhere explaining the things to see on the walk. Only a couple of bucks but worth the money.
The Cliff Walk is an absolute jewel and I can never get sick of it, It has a personality that changes from season to season and even day to day. It's one of those rare places that deserves far more than just 5 stars.

Though I can't say I have walked the full distance of this path. . .the beginning part at least (starting at Easton's Beach) is totally, and completely worth it. Stunning views of the waves crashing against the well-maintained rock walls, mansions with rolling lawns from the gilded age, and wildlife/greenery along the way. Great for exercising, strolling arm in arm with a loved one, or for a boredom breaker between friends!
Bring a packed lunch and enjoy a mid-day break with the oceans in front of you and exquisite architecture behind you. A must-see when visiting Newport, RI. The beginning of this National Recreational Trail is mainly a paved walkway, easily maneuverable for strollers, etc. Picturesque views give a calming effect, even with the large amount of people walking on any given sunny day. I highly recommend!!

I love the cliff walk!!!!!!
Whenever someone comes to visit me in RI, I make sure to take them here!!
Great to walk/run or just admire the views! :)

It is just amazing. It can't really be described to people unless they have been there. But trust me wear some sneakers and do the WHOLE thing. Do Not Crap Out At The Pagoda!
Where here in the middle of winter to walk the cliffs. What was weird it was not even cold I think that was because the sun was beaming down on us. Great place for a nice walk or a steady jog.
We did roughly 2 miled which took us about 1.25 hours and I must say the time flew by.
The views are breath taking with backyard views of the Newport Mansions. Great opportunity for picture taking.
One highly recommended spot to check out while on the cliff walk are the 44 STEPS which is right at the end of Narragansett Ave which you can also find FREE PARKING.
I would definitely come back in the summer time an catch a nice tan while on the Cliff.

Absolutely gorgeous views! It's a beautiful walk and best of all, it's totally free! We started at the 40 Steps and walked until the end. Be advised that you should definitely wear hiking boots or at least sneakers with good traction. As you get toward the end of the walk, it should really be called Cliff Hike. You have to scale some seriously huge rocks and at one point I found myself on a ledge clutching onto a wire fence praying I would not make a wrong move and fall to the ground below. Certainly not a leisurely stroll. Also, if you go shortly after a rainfall, be prepared to negotiate some puddles. All in all though, this is a beautiful walk and a real New England treasure.
Breathtaking views both on land and on sea. It is simply a must see when coming to Newport, RI. Although there is some parking along the way, I would suggest parking at the visitor's center and then taking the 67 bus (the yellow line) which will drop you off near the start of the walk and also pick you up once you have finished. By getting a bus receipt ($1.75 for the ride), your parking for the entire day is only $2.
The walk really is beautiful and the 3 miles took us about 1.5 hours. We did get a little sun burnt so please remember to apply lots of sunscreen and where protective gear! Also some sturdy shoes would have been helpful too because there are some parts where it's just rocks, so don't bring the baby strollers like I saw one family do. Lots of water helps too, but don't drink so much that you need to go to the bathroom cause there really isn't one along the path.

The Cliff Walk is perfect.
I have been dabbling in this tricky trail since I was a kid, but today I completed the whole thing. It's only about 4 miles but there are some rocky parts and it is aptly named.
It really is so freakin' beautiful to walk along the trail and listen, smell & see the ocean crashing beneath you. Sooooo beautiful.
Don't wear a sundress and don't wear flip flops, like I did.
Be prepared for this place to become the backdrop of your dreams. Lucid or cryptic.

What a beautiful view! Its a nice scenic walk....long walk...about 3 miles.
You get to see well maintain manicured lawns of the university, the breakers mansion and etc. Great for excercising and ideal when the weather is nice and sunny. Since it's by the water, you always get a nice sea breeze :0)
I found utopia!
It is perfect. They said it was in the mid- to upper - 60s that day, but with the sun it was more like the 70s. Whatever the temp was I didn't care... taking in the peaceful sites of the cliff walk was all I cared about. It's as if it's a scene out of a movie. I found myself wishing I had a better camera with me than I did. Oh well! There is always next time!
All in all, do yourself a favor when you're in Newport - treat yourself to a walk along the Cliff Walk.

I loved the sights and stuff, but I wasn't crazy abut the whole "hey , lets make our legs burn for the next week by walking three miles!"
The view was absolutely tremendous. You had the view of the beach and the crashing waves up against the cliffs. The Mansions are really nice too.
If your on a date, this place is fantastic...
and the best part..it's free .
You can never beat free!!

Just like everyone else says - this is a must do - REALLY!
Newport is a fun place - but this really brings you around to why it is so special.

truly breathtaking! even though the day was overcast and chilly, the view - of the sea, and mansions - was amazing, unlike anything i'd ever seen. someday, i promise to come back, so i can do the full walk - something tells me it is completely worth it!
note: we parked near the breakers, even though we didn't go into the property. i guess you aren't supposed to do that, but the guard was really nice about it!

Came here to walk along Cliff Walk and look at the mansions. Along the edge of the water, perfect place to be when the weather was hot. Very picturesque! Good view of the beaches below.

Definitely worth doing if your in the vicinity.
Yeah, you definitely need to go here if you're in the area.
It's a lovely walk with some pretty awesome jaw-dropping views. It's also a great non-cheesy and comfortable idea for a first date. The guys will like the hiking-like aspect of it, and the girls would be all ooh-ahh over the views. (plenty of opportunities for here-let-me-help-you-up)
(...And if you really want to go for the date thing, the end of the path leads directly to Spiced Pair, a really fancy restaurant overlooking the ocean. Hosts often are available at the back entrance to welcome you in.)
Even though it is a paved path, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone physically handicapped or the elderly because there are a fair number of ups and downs. Some of the best points can be found if you stray from the path.
Plus, IT'S FREE!

So freaking cool. Hold on as you make your way around (either to each other or to whatever is nearby, some sections of this jaunt are steeeeep). This is not a walk for the unsteady or those in Manolos (or their knockoffs). Be sure that whoever has the best center of gravity holds the camera because the views are impeccable - you'll kick yourself if you don't at least attempt to capture them.

Cliff Walk is absolutely stunning. My husband and I were driving by the mansions and decided to stop by the part of Cliff Walk next to the Breakers. You can't park in that area, so we just stopped for a moment to see the Walk. It was rainy and the water was churning. And there were surfers out! We watched them for a few minutes and then drove around to another dead end street, where the Cliff Walk is more cliff than walk. We climbed some cliffs and watched the water from the tip of a cliff. It was so cool!
We decided to come back a few days later when it was sunny, which was a great idea. You can see for miles, the water looks aqua blue, the mansions are gorgeous, and it was so peaceful being next to the water. We started from the 40 Steps and walked south; unfortunately we only walked for about 45 minutes before we headed back because it was very cold and the wind was causing us to freeze. It was still such a nice time and definitely my favorite part of Newport!
This is a beautiful 3 mile walk along the coast of Newport.
On one side you have the ocean and on the other side you have these beautiful mansions, some of which are open to the public. It's a great walk/run.
It used to cost the owners of thes mansions tons of money to maintain the sea wall. They got smart and turned it into a national park so that the state would have to maintain it. But what a wonderful benefit to the public.
Be aware of the poison ivy and lack of shade. Be sure to have water with you! And you can't really take a stroller on this walk, so if you have kids you should probably only do a segment of it.

Gorgeous! So, so gorgeous. Plus you can meet the local hooligans hanging out on the rocks with a case of beer and a radio, taking turns cliff-jumping. They're pretty cool.
Once you get off the paved parts, it gets very rocky and the exit points are few and far between, so wear enough sunscreen and supportive shoes.
Used to go here every summer with my best friend and his dad. This is one of my favorite walks/hikes of all time. I suggest going to Sig's deli first, having them make you some awesome sandwiches to go along with some snacks and drinks, and throwing them in your backpack so you can enjoy them once you get to the rocks that jut out into the water.
We always went to the very end of the Cliff Walk, which let's you out right on the beach, and onto a dead end road. Then we'd go check out a mansion, head to Newport Creamery, and call it a day.
Granted, I was a kid back then, but we went a few years ago when I was in my mid-20's and I still had a great time.
The Cliff Walk is a must see when you're visiting Newport.
*Hint* -- You can park in the parking lot for the hotel where the Cliff Walk starts. I think it's $5. Don't just park your car there, think it's cool, and leave. They don't like that. Just walk inside and pay them the five bucks. It's worth it just for the convenience and peace of mind...
Go!

THE perfect thing to do on a sunny Saturday afternoon, and a great activity to do when you need a get-away trip from Boston. You can definitely get your exercise on and do a long walk/jog along the coast, or you can stop to have a picnic and sit on the rocks with your friends while you soak in the vistas, the passersby, and a cool breeze. Leave yourself a few hours because it's a long stretch, and trust me, you won't want to leave.

The well-paved walking path provides a gorgeous view right over the water's edge. This cliff has some areas where you can go "off-road" and climb onto the slate that hangs over the sea. Climb low enough and you can even touch the water. Sitting here is idyllic and calming. The cliff walk was possibly my favorite bit of the trip.

If you visit Newport and do not go to the cliffwalk, you wasted your trip. It is the best free thing to do in Newport. I live here and I still do the cliff walk sometimes as it is so peaceful (during the off-season). If it is in the middle of the summer, GO EARLY to avoid crowds and find parking. DO NOT go here in the middle of the day in the summer or it will be chaos. The best thing you can do in the summer is set your alarm and go here for a walk during sunrise on a nice day. It will be a lasting memory that will never go away.

Oooooo yea, I just went there again. I have been to Newport every summer for the past 13 years. And Going to Cliffwalk is the best time while visiting Newport. It is the most beautiful coastal walking path in my opinion. I always spend couple hours walking or jogging along the coast or bring my quick meal to sit behind the Breaker Mansion. You don't feel wanting to leave, trust me.

So unbelievably gorgeous! It's a really nice walk along the ocean and you can veer off to walk on the rocks and down to the ocean. It's serene. Unfortunately you can't see some of the mansions due to the fences, but that really won't bother you after a few minutes of staring into the ocean.

I did this last year with the fiance and then again today with him and the parents. Last year I did it in sandals...definitely not a good move! So off we went today, in the drizzly weather, determined to do the Cliff Walk. Probably wasn't the brightest idea...as the rocks were slippery at times, and the ground muddy. My mom was flipping out a bit too. However, everyone made it from the 40 Steps to the South End of the Cliff Walk in one piece. The signs aren't exactly too prominent about the uneven rocks (towards the end, it does get pretty tough), they might want to put up a real sign. But all in all, it's a fun time. The mansions (and the mega yachts) are quite breathtaking. Easy to get to (park at the visitor's center and take the 67 bus to 40 Steps, then pick it back up down on Ocean Ave). It kinda sucked walking in the rain and then finding out that RIPTA decided to suspend bus service on Ledge Dr, where we planned to hitch a ride...arrrgh, thanks guys!
