You can go hang out in the mini park up the hillside it's cool to chill there and eat or smoke or whatever. Walk up Lakeshore Ave. from either direction and it is a beautiful view!

I damn-near died on these stairs this weekend. I'm talking about ran, then jogged, then walked, then crawled up to the top and laid the fuck down on the ground for 10 minutes to catch my breath before I huffed and puffed my way back down and got in my car (at which point I considered driving over to Kaiser for an I.V.) I consider myself to be in pretty good shape, working out 3-4 times a week. Obviously, the elliptical is but a shadow of the real stepping motion.
I thought I'd change up my routine and add the Cascade in on the weekend once or twice a month. NOT! My legs are still numb from the hip to the knee and from the knee down, my muscles are sore in the front and on the sides (where I didn't even know I had muscles). My calves are killing me and I have a slight limp today. Oh yeah, I did this two days ago.
These stairs made me their bitch. Mad respect. -

History charms the pants off me.. (but oh, i'm wearing shorts right now). Steps just get me winded.
I've come here with a meetup group specializing in walks with a historic bent (hi H!), and have had lunch along the few benches and steps. Great training if you can't make it to the Filbert steps across the Bay, or a stadium's steps.... do all the natural stairclimber that your pretty lungs can handle at this hidden little locale across the east side of Lake Merritt.

Easy parking, near the lake,
this Cleveland Cascade
will make you wake,
as you run up and down like an arcade.
You will surely work out,
but make sure you won't fall out.
There are stairs on both the right and left, but you got to keep to your right. Many people come here for a few laps, it will definitely give you some thighs & buns workout= Sexy Legs. Also, it's a very nice area with several plants and a great view. You can even come here for the view & scenery. BUT, thing is that it's a pretty short route... so you want a long and good workout- you will end up doing several laps. -

Take the stairs two at a time and you'll be bouncing quarters off your ass for sure! That's what I do. Next time you see me, get a quarter and try it out on my tushy. You won't be disappointed.
As I huff and puff up the stairs (did I mention that I take them two at a time? oh, I did?) I am propelled by the throbbing rap stylings of Chris Bridges (aka Ludacris) and his sexually suggestive lyrics that, strangely enough, is the motivation I need to get my lycra covered ass up these stairs:
"And I...just wanna take a lil ride on your curves
And get erotic giving your body just what it deserves and..
Let me give you some swimming lessons on the penis
Backstroke, breaststroke, stroke of a genius...YUPP
Call me the renaissance man
Get up and I stay harder than a cinder block mannn....HEYY
I'm just a bedroom gangster
And I been meaning to tell ya that I really must thank ya when ya.."

Oh, I'm shaking my money maker alright. All the way up them damn stairs. Shit. I'm tired.

Don't tell my boss, but when I call in "sick" from work, or are at home in the a.m. for some reason, I go do these stairs. I should be doing them right now.
Two at a time is the way to go, and the best thing about them is that because they are somewhat of a circle with ever expanding arcs, you can increase or decrease your workout based on what kind of mood you are in. And how quarter bouncing you want your ass to get.
I'm shooting for a vertical distance of 2 feet at this point.Listed in: Lake Merritt 'hood- Good times…, Stairs to Run

Holy smokes! What a workout! I know I'm gonna be hurtin' tomorrow but I want to be able to bounce quarters off my ass like Kiki G.
I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because I watched a woman let her dog pee at the top of the stairs. Everytime I got to the top it smelled like urine. I'm guessing she's not the only one who does that. The city needs to powerwash frequently since there is no beating common sense into some people. -

How unfortunate that I discovered my love for these stairs when I'm visiting to help my friends MOVE from their apartment that is within walking distance. Boo.
It's a nice small set of stairs...so no matter what level you are at, they are useful. I saw some people walk up a just couple times, while others sprinted up at crazy speeds. Are you even human!?
I especially enjoyed my walk back by the lake afterward. Catching my breath, smelling the fresh air (albeit some times gross smelling depending on what you're walking by...but I like it), and watching the millions of ducks and geese float peacefully on the water. Heavenly. -

This is why I like yelp (besides the constant outlet for undeniable self-indulgence) - I never knew that this little place existed in my neighborhood. I've walked and driven around Lake Merritt countless times, and never noticed Cleveland Cascade; shows you just how oblivious I can be. But yelp showed me the way.
This set of stairs is by no means the most beautiful pocket of the Lake Merritt area, but combine the history behind them with the lovely view from the top, and you've got yet another reason to fall in love with this particular Oakland district. I'd love to see them be turned back into the cascade of fountains that they once were (see picture), though I can understand why that would be a waste of good resources.
By the way, whose ass do I have to kiss to get one of those apartments sandwiched around ye olde Cleveland Cascade? Pretty sweet setup those folks have there, if you ask me.Listed in: My (previous) Oakland Lake…

I love this place! It must be weird for me to say that because it's nothing but a HUGE staircase! However, it's not only just a staircase! This place has a lot of history in it. These staircases use to be a waterfall where water spilled from bowl to bowl into Lake Merritt. It would have been a sight to see but someone turned the water off way back when. It is definitely a great place to show your friends, especially when you want to get them to exercise!

Doin' the stairs.
Doin' the steps.
Whatever you call it, your ass will thank you
and you'll be happy when it gets back to where it belongs.
Even if you don't consider yourself athletic, challenge yourself to a couple of rounds and go for it.
The buildings and trees keep you nice and cool during warm days and safe and stable during windy days. -

For a place that's smack dab in the middle of the city of Oakland, this is a truly beautiful stairway. Me being a history nut made it all the more beautiful and interesting to me.

It seems bizarre to be reviewing stairs, but the Cleveland Cascade really is an Oakland landmark, not to mention an awesome workout! What I love about this local treasure is that I can mix up my workout by walking around Lake Merritt and hiking these stairs a few times for a little extra ass-whoopin, or if I don't feel like walking around the Lake, I can just do the stairs for a quick, strenuous workout. I guarantee these stairs will kick your ass (like the Mount Everest stairs at the Powell Street BART station), but only if you want them to.

SO close to home. So much rich history. I like to admire it from afar (across the street while walking the lake) but I also admire the people trudging up and down those stairs over and over again.
