Seriously, don't bother trying to get any service here because it just won't happen. What IS it with service in this city? The waitress was pleasant enough... when I saw her. I don't know. I went here to watch the 2008 European Championship. First of all, the back room has a bunch of TVs... not well laid out. A bunch of them are HD TVs... and they don't have HD cable on them. WTF? Service blew (the place was hardly crowded) but the food was so-so for bar fare. I like that this place has the windows that open up along Dartmouth but it can be insanely packed close to the weekend (Thursday nights are a sight to behold). I'm often BAFFLED when I see a line (are you KIDDING me? You're waiting for that?). But... I guess it's the spot to be. Prices are reasonable, but seriously you can do SO much better in this city.
Which one of these things is not like the other.. which one of these things just doesn't belongggg.. diddle dee deet deet. I'm a supportive friend, so I've been wrangled into going to Clery's so that a couple of my girls can find themselves a man.. but standing around I just feel like that dark purple crayon that somehow got put away with the pastel markers. I'm just never comfortable here. Or maybe it's the fact that a prolonged stay at Clerys would require a restraining order or arrest.
To the girls of Clerys: Practice flipping your hair and holding a cup of water in your hand in front of the mirror. That way you won't come off as a complete ditz when you fail at this and maybe people won't "accidently" step on your toes when you're wearing your strappy sandals in the middle of winter.
I honestly don't get how there's a line around the block whenever I leave here. But whatever. The establishment itself seems cool enough. I've never gotten any 'tude from the bartenders and I've never really seen any shady happenings/South End furry creatures, but a lot of the people that come here are on the hunt and I'd be more interested in tranquilizing than actually taking anybody home.

went here for dinner after work with my coworker. The food was not as good as I expected it to be, not terrible, but not great. I dont drink but the other people there seemed kinda obnoxious? I dunno I cant really put it into detail, but let me put it this way: I wouldn't imagine myself being friends with anyone in that place - same goes for Dillon's and Joshua Tree. you know, the cant-quite-put-your-finger-on-it-but-you-know-a-do uchebag-when-you-see-one kinda feeling.
Our waiter was kinda flakey too. There's gotta be better places to grab a drink & some grub in the area. my advice: skip this place & explore your other options!

I went to Clery's on a Tuesday after work for drinks and a friend's birthday. She and her friends went there somewhat regularly. Actually, it seems everyone I know had been to Clery's but me: my cheap beer loving roommate, med school friend and various people I went to college with. They all say the downstairs is sketchy, but fun if you're in the mood for a "sweaty grindfest."
Having gone on a Tuesday after work in June, the crowd seemed more professional than collegiate. We got a booth in one of the back rooms upstairs. They have Coors Light girls come in from 7-9pm we found out. Usually this is about as appealing as drinking stale bath water, but they bring with them Guitar Hero with a sweet custom guitar. We got our friend to try it and the reps were more friendly than pushy.
They showed the Sox game on all the big screens, then astutely switched to the Celts in time for tip off.
I'd go back on a weeknight drinks again.
When I first started coming here, I really liked it. Now, you couldn't pay me to stand in line at this place on a weekend... it's not worth the wait.
The bathrooms are gross, the bouncers are mean, and it's laid out as a bunch of different rooms, it's like a maze.
What was I thinking when I used to want to come here?

Alrighty, all you Clery's haters, let me make one thing clear: I am NOT rating this place on the downstairs area on a weekend night - never been down there nor do I care to from what I hear.
However, for a Downtown Boston bar where you want to go socialize with a few friends, this place does the trick. Good seating around the bar, drinks are served quickly and not outrageously priced (5th star comes from having the Coors Light as a cheaper beer than the other beers offered), TVs are always tuned to the sports game you want to watch, and although it does get crowded, you can get from one end of the bar to the other without too much hassle (speaks good for the clientele).
Yes, the line does get long here, that's why you go early.

Great lounge chairs to watch the games and downstairs is crowded on a saturday night! The problem is the line outside...it's frat city and cold to wait outside for an hour 2/3 of the year!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the people standing in line to get in Clery's do not think it's funny when you loudly say "Why the fuck are you standing in line to go to Clery's?" However, they don't have any snappy comebacks- I mean, at least give me "Your mom's handing out free poonanie shots", frat dudes. Nothing. One guy did say something, but it was so unremarkable I don't even remember what he said.
I didn't go inside. There was nothing about the line that said "Once you get inside, you will not totally regret every minute you spent standing to get inside of this bar."

I hate this place. I have never gone here on my own accord and once in, I have never had what could pass as even a decent time. I have never silently willed closing time so furiously.
If you like being packed into a place chock full of skanks; dude bros sporting their new fuckin' haircut; a handful of the after-work crowd and a bunch of just-turned 21 year-olds, then this is your joint. If you like waiting for half an hour to get a drink, you are definitely in luck.
If that isn't enough to deter you from going (I mean, sometimes it can be great sport mocking these morons over a few drinks), then here are a few other tips: the place smells like someone vomited on the floor in 1998 and it hasn't been cleaned since; the bouncers are rude and entitled; and the bathrooms are nasty.
Clery's I am nominating you for demolition asap.

This is a great place if your looking to get in a brawl with drunk college kids. If it wasn't for the non-existent service, bland food, and overpriced, watered down drinks this place could have easily received a solid 2 star review. Please let me know why people line up around the corner to get into this bar on the weekends. I just don't get it.
URgh.
This is the Boston Medical Center bar or the BU Med school/Dental school bar or something. One time I was there with my friend saying, "I wonder if some douche wearing scrubs will come in and sit near us." Sure enough, about 10 minutes later some dental students or dental residents or something roll up to the bar and take off their jackets and they had their scrubs on. ::sigh::
There's nothing good about this place. Its packed and they let people get S-faced drunk. Last time I was there some staggering drunk guy with his staggering drunk girlfriends completely shouldered my buddy. Next thing I know we're all being thrown out for fighting.
Bottom line is that this place blows. If you're a girl who wants to find some med student or some resident doc, then go for it. Somehow I keep on getting dragged back to this bar and I think to myself, "maybe it will be better this time." It isnt. Somehow it just manages to get worse.
And don't get me wrong... I'm not bitter about the medical folks that go to this bar. I'm one of them. Perhaps thats why I don't like going there. Too bad I can't say the same for the others in my class who frequent this place.

This one rings in at #5 on my "Top Ten List of Places to Loot and Burn in Boston When the Revolution Comes".
Clery's is like Whiskey's stupid little kid brother. It's smaller and a bit less dingy than Whiskey's. However, the crowds are the same and the music is just as sucky. The "dance floor" is about two feet by three feet square, and there are 50 people dancing on it. The bartenders are surly.
Clery's was where we'd go after a double-shift at the Westin to get shit-faced. I should have just gone home and gone to bed.

I have a really hard time deciding how to rate this place.
Pros:
Trivia is great, but get there before 7 if you want a table, otherwise you run the risk of playing "Standing Trivia," which is just no fun for anyone. But the guy who runs it plays good music, and the competition is always fierce.
The food isn't too bad - Chicken Pesto Panini, BBQ chicken Pizza and French Onion soup are great, the nachos are pretty good. The Haddock sandwich just kind of mushed though.
If you're in, and you've been drinking, and it's not too crowded it's a fun place to hang out with friends. The boomboom room downstairs can also be a good time, though it can also be tremendously sketchy.
Cons:
The fricking line. When it gets crowded here I want to shoot myself, and it's so not worth standing outside for 2 hours just to go inside and get jostled by sweaty bankers and pay 5$ for Miller Lite.
So I guess, the moral of the story is, for weeknights only. Otherwise head to Brownstone next door. It's a huge step up, and there's never ever a line, even when the one at Clery's stretches to Columbus.

Came here to meet up for a birthday party. The birthday girl warned us to get there by 9pm because after that there is a line. It was snowing and such outside, so my friend and I were thinking that it wouldn't be bad out that night. WRONG. We arrived around 10pm and wanted in line for AN HOUR AND A HALF... IN THE SNOW. Why did we do this? Because it was a birthday party... had it just been that we were going there to check it out, we would have dipped out immediately. The one saving grace of waiting in line is we were near some nice guys and we decided we would all take Jager shots together once we got into the joint.
Once in, and post-shot taking... we had to wait in yet ANOTHER line to get down to the basement. Seriously? I need to wait in another line to check my coat? I understand the dancing is down there too, but that's not my problem - that's yours and your bad bad planning.
IMO, nothing special. One of my roomies absolutely LOVES Clearys, so one day I'm sure I'll give it another chance... especially b/c now I have one of the bouncer's phone numbers, and so I will receive cut the line privileges. I love special treatments. :-) (Don't be a hater b/c you'll still have to wait in line... if you don't want to GET THERE EARLY ... even if it is a mini blizzard outside).
-----------------------------
Edit:
I upped this review by 1 star because I did go back... and use the bouncer's number... so since I didn't have to wait in line, and I went with a couple friends and just drank/danced the night away... it was a rockin good time. I still stand by my statement that the waiting in line part BLOWS so I'll either use the digits to cut the line, or get there early if/when I go again!

This used to be the default bar for my straight girlfriends and I to start our weekend nights. Being right down the street from Club Cafe, it was our tradition to start our night straight at Clery's before transitioning to homosexual down the avenue at CC. "Ladies, you have exactly 47 minutes to find a husband because in 59 minutes it will be MY turn to do the same."
There is nothing special or worthwhile about Clery's that should make it your ultimate destination. There are a few rooms with a bar in each and yet it will always be annoyingly crowded. People WILL be obnoxious. You WILL spill your drink. And you WILL find "that" girl that everyone just absolutely hates. Choo-no who I'm talkin' bout.
Most recently I came to Clery's for their trivia night with some fellow Yelpers. The lack of space in their downstairs resulted in the Yelpers huddling in the way back using any movable object as a seat. "Excuse me, are you using that mop bucket?" Trivia was fun, but it was unfortunate that we were completely separated from the actual question area. "Ugh, who wants to bring the answers up to the table? I'm still catching my breath from the last walk over there."
Clery's is average. Come here for pub style dinner or a few drinks before moving on. If you consider this to be your hot-spot for the night, well, you're as lame as this bar.

Bf and I tried this place for the first time since moving into the South End. We literally live across the street and never been. We went there for lunch with some friends. The panini sandwiches are delicious! Their root beer was so crisp and good! the service, well they could be a little quicker. Other than that, the place is big and interesting.
I've been here at nite once and dont know why there is always a line, its nothing special inside.
Sometimes this place is hoping and sometimes its a total dump. I'm sure it's all exponentially related to how many drinks I've had. And I'm talking about it as a bar that serves food, because it definitely doesn't work as a restaurant. Think uncomfortable, awkward seating, average food, and slow service. Yeah, you need a few amber, maroon, and clear ones to enjoy the Cleary's experience. The after work crowd can be large and fun, but that's only because of the damn convenient location.
I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place. It's such an indecision bar:
-Where should we go?
-I don't know.
-What are you in the mood for?
-I don't know.
-::sigh:: Okay, I guess let's go to Clery's.
It's that kind of place. Like, you want to go out, but no one can come up with anything, so Clery's. They have decent food -- love the sweet potato fries (but can't eat much else -- where did their veggie burger go?). The beer selection is solid. The dancefloor downstairs carries fond memories of the first time I made out with my friend Scott, which was predicated by his weird friend hitting on me and me trying to sidle up to Scott to prevent it. Add drinks and that equals teh makeouts! But, I digress.
The decor's that nice wood and brick sort, the bathrooms are usually relatively clean, and when they open the windows in the spring, it's pretty awesome. But I can't give this place more than three stars, because it's so full of a-holes. It is. I mean, there is just a sea of douchebaggery upon entering, and sometimes you have to be Moses to try to get through it
I'll probably still come here occasionally (although probably less now that I have discovered Coda and its magical cheap High Life), but that doesn't mean I will always like it. And there will always be that girl dressed in trendy crap that talks really loud and giggles and drives me insane, or the guy in the golf shirt who thinks everything he says is hilarious because of the giggling girl, but rest assured, bro, it is not.
Anyway, three stars.
sometimes you go to a place, don't like it, and then never go back and never think about it again. clery's, unfortunately, is not that kind of place, as it keeps coming up as a potential destination. thus i am forced to pan it.
is it the great location? is it the pastiche of styles, where every thing is just a little represented? is it that my friends are just frat-boy d-bags and dance floor-lovin' party girls? i hope not the latter....and yet i keep hearing, "hey, a bunch of us are going to clery's tonight. wanna come?"
NO.
there is a touch of yuppie-fancy fittings. there is a good-looking bar. the menu appears to contain better-than-pub-grub. TVs indicate a nice place to catch a game. but really, this is a gigantic frat party. i suppose the other stuff is just to make the frat boys feel like they are a little grown up. they are not. the clientele is unctuous, and simultaneously overeager. the music is too loud, and apparently from a 2003 house party mix CD. the beer comes from several fancy-name taps, but it all tastes like stale bud lite. i have never stayed long enough to order food.
i was there last night, because my buddy (who drove) called an audible and stopped in to meet some friends who'd said, "hey, a bunch of us are going to clery's tonight. wanna come?" and he took the bait. my GF and I walked out after 20 mins, not even ordering a drink.
Sometimes it is ok to compromise your desires for your friends'. but not if it involves this joint.

Location. Location. Location.
That would be the main reason why I head to Clery's. It's in a great spot, which attributes to it being such a good default bar to go to. I would say it has a good after work crowd on Thurs and Fri nights. I've eaten here a few times, but can't really say any of the food sticks out....after a few beers in me, I thought the chicken fingers were amazing.
The most negative I can say about Clery's is that the womens bathroom is consistently disgusting. It's always a mess and most times at least one of the locks is missing on the bathroom stall doors.
Oh, and they recently got rid of my favorite beer, Siera Nevads Pale Ale.
What gives?
Not a fan.
I was here on a friday night. It was nearly midnight and the bar's empty, outside there's a line. go figure.
The crowd was less than stellar. I felt like telling half the patrons that high school ended 10 years ago.
Pluses:
- The drinks were decent.
- The bouncers let us sneak in to a half empty bar and skip the ridiculous line (there was no way we were waiting).
Why is there always a line down the block on a Saturday night? Seriously. I KNOW this isn't the only bar in the area. So, what gives? I really don't understand why people are willing to wait 45 minutes for this place. Though, if you get there any time before about 945, the wait is CONSIDERABLY less.
I've been here a few times-- and I've had a good time. Though, I mean, for me all it takes is a quick shot of something divinely alcoholic and I can have a good time ANYwhere. Having two floors is pretty convenient-- but I find their dance floor gets REALLY slippery by about 1030. The lack of dress code is always a plus considering I live in flip flops through November. Still, this place is just absolutely nothing special-- though, I will give it 3 stars for not charging cover.

I watched the Patriots-Colts game here this weekend. It was awesome. As some know, I LOVE the Patriots. Watching the game with a gagillion other people who LOVE the Patriots is the best. Standing on the chairs, banging the pipes, high-fives all around, screaming at the top of your lungs at every play.... it doesn't get any better.
It's great to be a Boston fan right now! Even the cops on their horses stopped and watched the second half through the window and were cheering along with us. YAY.

I'm not sure how places like this stay in business in Boston. I feel that, if this were another city, it would have been neglected to death. We Bostonians must have a soft spot for approachable bars with bad food.
I went here for dinner and ordered pulled pork with prosciutto, but what I got was what looked like a slice or bland turkey with ham. So I asked for mustard and after 20 minutes or so I got some cheap yellow mustard. Literally inedible.
There is a difference between prosciutto and ham and it's at the heart of why this place sucks. Kind of like that Who song "substitutes".
My girlfriend ordered some sort of a vegetarian pizza and it was literally just lettuce on top of pizza bread. Literally. No cheese, no sauce. Just lots and lots of lettuce.
We all kind of remarked on how something could sound so good on paper, but then not mean anything.
Also, I'm not sure if they have a beer list normally, but we had to just listen to a waitress rattle off the 6 beers that they have. They were all basically the same beer too.
Literally, the worst meal I've had in a long time. I'm not sure how indicative my experience is, but I can't recommend any portion of this bar/restaurant. At least not as a restaurant.
Now you would never catch me dead here for a "night spot".... Why anyone would stand in a line reaching around the corner to go to Clery's is beyond me.
However, as a restaurant it's good... the clam chowder is great, and their sandwiches are pretty good too!
Great place for sunday lunch after a night of binge drinking.

Times I have been and will go to Clery's:
* Saturday late morning (football, beer)
* Monday afternoon (after work drinks)
* Wednesday night (Yelp trivia)
From what I've read and what I've heard, I wouldn't go any other time. This is a place that's best when it's not crowded (often a sign of problems), when the service will pay attention to you and bring your beers quickly and with a half-smile. Kitchen occasionally has some problems, but the sweet potato fries are pretty good.
The trivia was run pretty well - though the place was a little loud, I could hear fine, and it wasn't overrun by the type of trivia people that make me want to never go to trivia again. Of course, the beautiful Yelp crowd helped. And if you want to watch baseball or football, TVs abound.

Mediocre, at best.
This place is good because people can always agree on going there: it's a default bar, due mainly to its location. Does this make it a GREAT place to hang out? No. Does it make up for the irritated staff and annoying music? No.
Sill, I come here a lot because two of my best friends live directly across the street. I can appreciate the line outside because they at least keep the place below Running-Of-The-Bulls-Experience capacity, but it ends there. And not that it matters, but the downstairs dance section usually has its own separate line inside.
The tables out back actually make this place great for bigger groups. The music isn't so loud that you can't hear the person next to you, and drinks aren't overpriced and are actually brought to YOU, usually speedily, by wait staff. Also bonus points for not being located in the roided-and-guidoed-out-Fanueil-Hall area, sparing patrons the agony of douchebaggery on your night of partying.
So if standing in line waiting to get into a place and get drinks so you can catch up with your friends is your idea of a great time, then you're in luck. Personally, I'd rather head over to Brownstone's until the wait dies down since neither place charges cover.

3 Stars - that ain't bad!
M-F after work this place is a five-star hang out.
Weekends it is utterly disappointing and is probably closer to a one-star cougar haven. So I decided to go smack dab in the middle with the generous three.
I've been to this establishment during the week and on the weekends. Most recently I visited on the weekend. While I got there early enough to watch the Red Sox play, there is typically a line to get into Clery's on the weekend. I'm not really sure why? I've seen women take taxis to Clery's just to wait in line on a Friday and Saturday. I'm sorry but there are 100s of other bars in Boston, many of which are a lot better, nicer, and cheaper than this place. What's all the fuss about? The beers are fairly reasonably priced, but the crowd is so weird. I was buzzed at about 11:00pm when I decided to take a lap and see what the clientele looked like. They were predominantly older women dawning the putrid pink Red Sox hat. Maybe this was just a reflection of the night that I went. However, this dichotomy has existed since I was in college (weekday vs. weekend).
Clery's I'm unimpressed with your weekend bar scene. I also can't tell what type of bar it is. Is it old school Irish saloon? Is it supposed to be a modern, dark, comfortable South End hang out? Is it supposed to be (gasp) a dance club? All I know is it was convenient to get to, from the place I was staying. I probably won't return.

Clery's is excellent for gathering a group of friends (large or small) and catching the game, unwinding from work or just hanging out.
We went one night for trivia and had a blast. A group of about ten, we got a great seat near the window, had a few beers and were actually able to have conversations with one another, as the music and crowd weren't deafening. AND - we won 2nd place in trivia, which was a whopping $50 off our bar tab!
An unexpected yet welcome surprise: the boneless buffalo wings here are fantastic!
60 second walk from the back bay train station, big gorgeous windows, always packed. clery's has the potential to be a great bar -- but why make the effort? it's packed almost any night of the week as is. don't fix what ain't broke, right?
the line gets me, but go early in the summer for a seat by the windows and you won't regret it.
and, yes, the 'lower level' is like a frat house basement. but i met my boyfriend there so it holds a (very slightly) special place.

Go city themed sports team! Wooo yeah!
Let's take Dillon's, fill it with a bunch of irritated staff, but add in an obnoxious basement dance floor that reminds me way too much of Daisy Buchanan's (in the clausterphobia, the clientelle, and the terrible music) and you pretty much have Clery's.
If you want to be completely mindless, Bud swilling-Jam'n 94.5 listening-get low-fun, well, this is your place. Forget about any drink better than a rum and coke, because you'll just be looked at funny.
There are by far better places to go in the South End, but I suppose I should be thankful that Clery's exists and keeps them out of other, better locales.

Life is sucking the soul of out me and a couple of hours at Clery's only accelerated my death. It's not that this place is bad in any special way, it's just that it has no imagination, no special atmosphere, nothing unique - no soul. It's a souly-souly-soulless place destined to make any Yelper omit the kind of pathetic 'meh' that one normally only associates with partly-asphyxiated hamsters.

Clery's is one of the few places that has gotten a bump up star from me. The quality of the bar is really about a 3 star. The interior is well designed but is separated in an odd sort of partitioning format.
There is the main bar with the long windows where the majority of people hang out (it's also good if you want to see if your friends are outside). The back bar is more cramped but is useful if you are trying to stay out of site or can't pony up to the main bar. You also have an area with tables and a downstairs.
The staff a bit disappointing as they tend to be a little rude and you have to put some real effort into flagging them down if you want a drink (though the bouncers are polite for a Boston bar).
What does work really well for the bar is the clientele. They get a really good mix of people that are mostly professionals and also are relatively attractive. You aren't going to suddenly think that you are in Miami but compared to most Boston bars there is a really good mix of people.
If you are planning on going it really is important to get there fairly early. After about 10 you will get stuck in the line and once it has started it moves really slowly.
I'd give Clery's 3.5 stars if I could. Fun and laid-back atmosphere, but often too loud for my liking on busy Friday and Saturday nights. If you're already two sheets you likely won't even notice.
Weave yourself through the meat market crowd and try to find a seat at one of the front tables, near the window. I've run into b!tchy waitstaff from time-to-time -- major attitude, even towards a nice 'ol Midwestern girl like myself. :) They do, however, almost make up for it with their mad martini skillz. If you're there for apps, try the pizza with salad on top. Very dee-lish!

I have been to this South End Bar a few times and whether it's to eat or just grab drinks it's a great place. The bar and restaurant are well seperated but you don't feel too isolated in either section. The staff is very nice and don't rush you (secret of a bar I've been told) through the meal. The chicken wings are REAL CX wings...not those 25 cent skin on a stick from Whiskey's, but real meat, real hot sauce, and a good amount for the buck. My last trip was teh Black and Bleu burger w/ Sweet Potatoe Fries. Now I know deep frying SPF suck the health right out of them but I really think that these fries are better than their regular fries. The regular fries seem a little limp and not that memorable...but the SPF are damn GOOD. Plenty of beers and drinks...and during the summer the windows are open for some nice Boston breezes. Clery's is a good pick for restaurant, dinner, groups, lunch, before the games, and for any other reason you might convince yourself to go to bar for.
Clerys is one of those bars that everyone in a group can agree on. While not offering anything special or spectacular, it aims to satisfy everyone's peculiarities and peeves and I have successfully dragged large mixed groups here from snooty princesses to anything-remotely-fancy-avoiders. The place is very large but it gets packed and the couches/tables/chairs/bar area get packed quickly. They have some amazing waitstaff..one waitress kept track of all our drink orders in a group of over a dozen and then presented seperate bills without anyone having to ask. Thanks!

If you go early, get a window stool, have a few, get some nachos or a burger. It is kind of fun. The staff can be very friendly. I get out before dark so I have no clue what the rest of you will go through during rush hours.
-update-September-
-Beer was just OK. The Blue Moon Pumpkin had zero pumpkin flavor. Is it because it's stale? Maybe. The waitress was kind of sour, but the crappy music was so too loud I don't blame her for acting weird. I hate sitting on those low stools. Those are for dwarves, not six foot men.
This is the best bar in Boston, hands down. I have resisted writing about it for a long time but it looks like the cat is out of the bag and everyone else now knows how good it is. If you don't get here by 10:00, you probably will not get in as the line is down the street. There is a downstairs where you can dance and and the ground floor is more like a pub environment. Its always a good crowd - the meatheads and metros have not discovered and ruined it, yet. As of late, however, I have noticed a few people wearing diamond stud earrings and rocking orange tans and blowouts so I am wondering if it is a matter of time until its completely infiltrated by db's. Hopefully those of us with actual jobs and non-MTV derived personalities can hold the fort as the young professional crowd is what makes this place so much fun.
Falls in the "meh" category as far as places to go out.
I usually have a decent time here, although it gets packed fairly early in the night which is never fun. I like that they do have the option of a dance floor, but even that is a bit skeezy at times.
Basically...I won't go out of my way to go here, but if we're down the street, I'll definitely swing by (as long as the line isn't painfully long...which it sometimes is).
