Hubby & I often go to Clay Pit for their $10 lunch buffet on Sundays.  We have been known to bring our out-of-town guests here as well, and everyone agrees (even those who didn't know they liked Indian food) that this place is top notch.

The family who owns this restaurant will greet you with a smile, they make their naan to order and always bring it out piping hot from the oven, the buffet is small but mighty. . and don't forget to save room for the perfectly sweet pudding you'll find next to the salads.  Even if I am so stuffed it hurts, I won't leave without having a small bowl of it.

And yes, I have left this place in pain often.  It is worth the recovery time. . every time.

First of all, let me just point out that Clay Pit in Mill Creek Town Center currently has a whopping 46% of the vote for "Best Indian Cuisine" in King 5's Best of 2009 contest.   That alone speaks volumes.

From the lovely spiced aroma when you first walk in, to the impeccable and consistent service, to the amazingly wonderful food, Clay Pit is 5 stars all the way around.

I've dined here 4 times in the last 3 months since I've lived in the area.  I've been twice to the lunch buffet, once for take-out, and once for a sit down dinner.  I have never been disappointed.  In fact, when I went with my brother and his friend who were visiting from the Portland area, we all concurred that this was easily the best we've had - and we've all had A LOT.

I'm a spice girl.  Not in the, "If You Wanna be My Lover" sense, but in the way that I really, really, really like my food hot and spicy.  In my opinion, someone who orders their food at a spice level of 5 stars, clearly wants it to be as hot as they can make it.  Clay Pit understands this.  On the visit with my brother, all three of us were sniffling and dewy.   Just how I like it.

The lunch buffet is expansive and surprisingly inexpensive.  It's less than $10, in fact.  It features multiple meat dishes that include beef, chicken and lamb varieties, as well as multiple vegetarian options, soup, items from the tandoor, samosas, pakora, grilled veggies, and at least 4 or 5 sauces or chutneys.  To accommodate those who have weaker taste buds than I do, the heat is held back a bit.  However, the buffet makes up for it by including Indian hot sauces in their array.  The buffet is kept warm and your server brings you a basket of freshly made naan.    You leave there so full that you almost need a wheelchair.

Finally, I love that the owner is always there and remembers me every time.  It adds a very sweet touch to an already perfect experience.

It doesn't get any better.

Every time I come here, I have an excellent experience. The owners are always there and remember us every time we visit. The servers are attentive and prompt.

I've tried most of the items on the menu, and they're all very good. But here are some of my favorites that I recommend everyone try:

Mango Lasi: mango and yogurt drink. It's kind of like a smoothie with out the ice. Tangy and sweet... but not too sweet. I love it!

All of the following: Tiki Masala, Vindaloo &  Mango Curry

The Naan is always good, but for those of you who want to try something new, check out the Paratha. It's also bread, but it has multiple layers and slightly buttery (but hey, we all love butter, right?)

Take out is just as good as dining in, sometimes it's faster especially when they're busy. Either way the food is delicious.

I really enjoy eating here and the food is good, but it's VERY chaotic Friday and Saturday nights which is why I gave it 3/5 stars. The place is jam packed, kids crying, the glass table tops feel slimly like it hadn't been properly cleaned, and you're supplied with an endless revolving door of servers. I think I had about 6 different servers come to our table! it's really not my favorite time to grab a bite from this place. I have witnessed the table next to us demanding to get their food to-go after waiting 1.5 hr at the table for their main course...yikes!! Didn't feel very comfortable sitting next to a shouting angry customer.

I do have to say service is slow on busy nights, but worth the wait if you're really hungry for good Indian food. And by slow service I mean the main course you order takes about 30 - 45 minutes to get to your table. My suggestion would be to call to make reservations in advance or arrive before 6 pm on busy nights. Best time to go is during other weeknights or during lunch when they have the buffet open.

I have heard from friends that most of the tips go to the house. Not sure how true this is since the servers are always so friendly and helpful. Why would they work for minimum wage at a restaurant?? Next time I visit, I will for sure tip in cash and hand it directly to the server just in case this rumor is true. I tip for their service and expect that it goes to the servers that deserve it!

I do know that the Taste of India practices something similar regarding tips, but the servers are paid higher than minimum wage. When I go there, I skip out on paying tips all together. In my opinion, Clay Pit and the Taste of India serve the same quality of food, both tasty, but I like the Taste of India more because of its relaxed atmosphere.

I really dig this place. I live up north a bit, and strip malls with some money in them are often the better options for location when businesspeople and restaurateurs go about finding their spots. Mill Creek Town Whatever It Is is nothing too special when you get down to it, but it has some nice flow to it, some good physical plants for stores, restaurants, and the other tenants, and parking is reasonably plentiful. You kind of have to take what you're given when you're this far away from an urban center, so let's celebrate the relative virtues on offer here. Parking's free.

Anyway, CP has many fine things to recommend it. It's clean. Well-lit. They offer flavorful food. They have a credible, if insanely brief, selection of beer and wine. Their menus is fairly diverse, within their focus. Everything is prepared well. The service is attentive, professional, and pleasant. If you're hungry and in the area, it's absolutely fine in every way.

Went here last night for the second time. Chicken pakoras, kashmiri curry lamb, and chicken vindaloo. A little spice on the vindaloo, a little more on the lamb. Robust, well-rounded flavors on both. Well-chilled bottle of beer, well-poured draft beer. Tasty if slightly bland pakoras. Nice rich mellow flavors in the chutneys with pakoras (and complimentary papadoms).

Next to Cedars and Preet's, this place is very much a strip mall joint. But next to the local competition, it's a little door to another culture. Recommended, albeit with geographical considerations in mind.

My husband and I went here last night and this place has the most wonderful food.  Everything we had was so full of flavor!  We ate and ate and ate till we were bursting at the seams.  We had our leftover packaged up and forgot them on our table, good thing the owner came running out to our car with them - Great customer service!!!!  We can't wait to have the leftovers for dinner tonight and maybe go back tomorrow for take out!

Located in one of the upscale California-esque outdoor shopping complexes of Mill Creek, the interior of the Clay Pit is pleasantly designed and immaculately maintained.  The enticing smells of distant lands greet you from a open kitchen as you are seated at a table decorated with the proper cloth accoutrements.

Vegetable samosas with deliciously flaky crusts and a nice compliment of sauces initiated a good start to the meal.  A plentiful serving of freshly baked spinach paneer naan turned out to be among the best that I've had anywhere - a beautiful blend of fresh spices and cheese.

Most importantly, the lamb in the ghost dish that I was tried was tender, of good quality and cooked perfectly.  The sauce piqued the senses with exotic  flavors of fenugreek, garlic and ginger.  Even the basmati rice was out of the ordinary with touches of julienned carrot and parsley.

I ordered the dish extra hot and it tested even my thresholds.  Even then, the waiter indulged us unsolicited with freshly chopped peppers to ensure that we weren't disappointed with the heat.

Service was prompt and the owner personally checked on us no less than three times over the course of the meal.

Everyone in my party was enamored with the food and happy with the service.  Five stars!

Clay Pit was the first Indian restaurant that I found that I thought was as good as it gets! Being that I'm from the bay area of Cali, there were tons of delicious Indian restaurants. When I moved up to Seattle, there was not a single restaurant with good everything!

For appetizer, they have the most delicious Samosa! Perfect taste, spicyness, flavor, ingredients, wrap, etc etc! They have multiple main course meals that I love. Every dish we've ordered so far has given my approval of 2 thumbs up! Though I haven't tried their buffet, I'm truely impressed with their menu.

Lunch buffet=ridic. I don't think we had Indian restaurants in Ohio, so this is relatively new to me, but I really liked this place compared to the other places I have been in WA. They give you your own basket of naan for your table. The food was really fresh and the place/bathrooms were clean. People working there were really nice. Can't even recommend a certain thing to order because everything I ate was badass.

I do not claim to be an expert on Indian food but I love Clay Pit. We've visited for both dinner and for the lunch buffet. Both were fabulous.  The owner is very friendly and always asks to make sure everything is satisfactory.

The restaurant is beautiful inside and has a good ambiance for Mill Creek, I love this place!

I have been here at least three times, but mainly because this is the closest Indian place to me. The food is consistently good and the wait staff is attentive. The one time I did order a drink, the Mango Martini, it was HORRIBLE! Truly undrinkable.

One other thing to keep in mind: The hotness scale doesn't seem to mean much here. When I got a 3 and my friend got a 6, both were the same in hotness, neither of which being very spicy. If you like spice, let them know you mean it!

We recently visited the Clay Pit for the first time.  I am not an expert in Indian cuisine, but the food was excellent.  Definitely on par with some of the nice Indian restaurants I've been to in Seattle.  Our only complaint was that the service was slow at times, even though the restaurant wasn't terribly busy.  We'll definitely be back, though!

We got lost in the Mill Creek area and kinda stumbled onto the Clay Pit looking for a place to eat lunch. It's in a relatively new shopping center, so the place appears to be very clean which is always a good thing. Typical of Indian restaurants, we walked in and saw that the lunch buffet was the main offering.

We actually met the owner and asked if we could just order off the menu since the Mrs. is a vegetarian and the buffet had a large share of meat dishes. The owner was super-nice and said absolutely.

We ordered (forgive my spelling) Benghan Barta (eggplant), Vegetable Vindaloo, Potato Naan and rice. The owner told us that the rice came free with the dishes, so we were incredibly shocked since we're from Southern California where you always, and I mean always, have to pay extra for rice. Free rice???  You guys are living the high-life up in Washington State.  Good start. We ordered everything "spicy," which made the owner look at us funny.

While we were waiting for our food to arrive, the owner kindly told us to help ourselves to the soup and salad at the lunch buffet on-the-house. I'm telling ya, this guy was super-nice.

Our dishes arrived within several minutes along with a large plate of basmati rice. I know other people have commented about the portion sizes here, but I can tell you that So. Cal Indian restaurants have tiny portions where your typical $14-16 entree is only suitable for one grown adult. So, we were shocked how big the portions were at Clay Pit.

First off, the potato naan was fantastic; stuffed full of potatoes, spices, cilantro, clarified butter...nice texture, a little crispy outside with a very tender bite to it. The only flaw was that the naan had a little too much clarified butter on top...but can I really fault the guy for that? Probably not...hmmmmm....butter.

The Benghan Barta was just outstanding...to the point it makes my mouth water thinking about it. It was a mix of eggplant, spices and just the best sauce ever. It was both flavorful and spicy, perfect with the rice and naan.

The Vegetable Vindaloo was just okay...a mix of various vegetables in a vindaloo sauce that was a little underwhelming.

This place stood out so much that we actually came back to the Clay Pit 2 days later to have dinner. For dinner we ordered the Benghan Barta (eggplant), Aloo Ghobi (cauliflower and potatoes), some kind of Kafta dish (ground up chick peas formed into balls and deep fried; kinda like falafal), and potato naan.  This time around the owner gave us 2 large plates of basmati rice...just in case we needed extra.  Is this guy an alien???  You don't find this kind of nice in So. Cal....

Since we didn't think the food was spicy enough during our last visit, we asked our waitress for all of our dishes to be "extra spicy." We thought it was funny when the owner came over to make sure that we really wanted everything extra spicy...come to find out from the owner that some previous customers complained that extra spicy was "too" spicy for them to eat. I'm thinking to myself...what kind of nimrod orders extra spicy (which is the hottest level on the menu) and then complains that it is "too" spicy? What'd they expect? Boiled potatoes?

Anyways...the Kafta dish and the Benghan Barta were outstanding. Best Indian dishes we have ever eaten. It's really hard to describe the myriad of flavors going on in those dishes since they use so many different spices, but it truly was an exceptional meal..and we had plenty of leftovers.

After we had a little time eating our dishes, the owner came back to our table to make sure that the extra spicy dishes weren't "too" spicy...which they were not.

Awesome Indian food, good portion sizes, good selection of vegetarian alternatives, and super-friendly owner/staff. Highly recommended.

I don't know...maybe we just have crappy Indian food down here in So. Cal., but you folks up in Mill Creek should consider yourselves lucky by having Clay Pit in your neighborhood.

Been here for the lunch buffet a few times. Food is always good and wait staff is very friendly. What I really like is that for the buffet they serve you naan at your table instead of always finding that empty bread tray on the buffet line. We even went here on New Year's day for lunch, very accommodating!

Ok, ok, ok,  so Indian food for two nights in a row.  Well, with the likes of Can Am Pizza and the Clay Pit, going every night would not be so bad.

So went to the swanky Mill Creek Town Center and we went to the Clay Pit.  I had a King Fisher Indian brew and my friends and I ordered three tasty Indian dishes.  I ordered a chicken mango curry, and it was oh so choice.  All in all, all of our meals were good (we shared).  The sauces and flavors were orgasmic---when your taste buds have that sort of experience, you've found a good place.

Hey, even I like a change, once in a while.  The Clay Pit serves what seems to me as traditional Indian fare, as well as some usual western "tuned" Asian Indian foods.

Nan?  You ask whats Nan?  Well lemme tell you...
It's like a pita, chips, bread appetizer, that's stuffed. These guys do it fresh and large, the two ways I like it. (I must also be part Indian!)  All different flavors from plain to any combo of cheese, garlic, herbs, fruit to nuts!

Can I let you in a little secret?

This place has such good Nan, that if I find myself in the dog-house, my spouse will only let me back inside unless I bring her some Nan (spinach and goat cheese is her favorite). Oh yeah, with Chutney.

The Curries?  One word: excellent!
BTW My spouse likes this chicken thing in a green spinach sauce; yeah I thought that too, but after one bite I was won over.

The Service? Double Ditto! Excellent!
BTW  I usually find some sort of reason to not say excellent on service, but this place ain't one of those.  These guys have so many servers, I lost count of them after they seated us. Seriously!  They are aiming for customer service

And if you need something they're knowledgeable and fast.  They were even able to figure out my order in my Brooklyn accent! How do ya like that?

Price: cheap! should be higher, but hey I like a deal!
Portions:  Big, plenty.
Interior: Nice, a little dark by lighting standards, but for a guy to bring his girl for a somewhat intimate meal, it works! They got booths

Overall they got my 5 star vote. Bang for da Buck!

After hearing nothing but praise about this place, we drove over last night for dinner. Parking was easily found on Main Street since we're in the middle of the week and the surrounding complex deserves an honorable mention for overall curb appeal.

My first observation as we entered the premises was the absolute dearth of ethnic customers. But we figured these are recessionary times so let it slide. However being that the restaurant was packed to 80% of capacity I figured that these guys must be doing something right after all.

We were promptly seated by the friendly service staff next to a buncha presumptuous valley girls. But hey it takes all kinds so I amused myself by eavesdropping to their litany of crap until the food arrived. One thing that put me off was the management's reluctance to proffer more than 1 papad @ a time on our table. WTF - did they think my kid would use the extras as a frisbee ?

Anyway the food arrived in a timely manner and we began to eat. My wife hated the mango sauce and tikka m/s sauce so much that she didn't even get them boxed for the office later. And those guys will damn near eat anything. My choices that came from the oh-so manly grill were polished off by me but then how can ya go wrong with chicken & lamb on an open flame ? Even a simple burger can achieve the same level of perfection, given the chance.

60 minutes and 60 dollars later we took off.

To sum it up, the service was attentive and friendly. The lamb merits a repeat visit BUT the entrees in mango sauce & tikka masala and their affinity towards their own papad which kept them from sharing them with us left MUCH to be desired.

I am in a state of constant craving for this place. My hubby and I went with a friend about a year ago and it was ok. We enjoyed it, but it didn't stick in my memory enough to return until I was yelping Indian restaurants close to me last Tuesday. Since then I have been 3 times - once for dinner and twice for the lunch buffet. I think the food had really stepped it up since the first time I went. It now has that "please God, let me please not be so full so I can eat more of you delicious morsels" quality. The Ghobi Manchuria on the lunch buffet is to die for. It isn't there every day, but make sure to snag some when you see it.

Props to Clay Pit for their excellent service. The decor is trendy and food is fresh & tasty.

The Owners here are very attentive and courteous. Their tandoori chicken tikedar while not the tastiest ever, is very appetising, juicy and tender. The naans are always just right and unlike most other Indian places, made fresh. I 've tried most of the entrees here and while they all seem to have a common underlying flavor , the overall taste is good.

The Indian Chai and Mango lassi are quite good and go well with the meal.

Its always a pleasant experience at Clay Pit.

Finally a nice and decent Indian restaurant in Mill Creek! We called and picked it up. The guy was nice. The naan was too soft , maybe needs to be more time in the oven. There was only 4 chunks of chicken in the tomato butter chicken dish. But lots of sauce. The rice was basmati with saffron than other ingredients. The rice was much tastier than other restaurants. I am giving 4 starts because for the price of the butter chicken, they should put more chunks of chicken. We will return as it so close to our home, the service was great and it taste so Good!.

***Update
Went today for lunch. The buffet had chicken tikka masala and there was dark meat in it. It is not like when you eat at dinner. Maybe is cheaper to add dark meat in the buffet and white meat at dinner. I think it should be consistent. The service was nice although it took them a while to clean our table. They need more help. The experience was nice again.

I've eaten here on average every six-to-eight weeks since opening.  The only thing that keeps me from being more regularly is probably more a lifestyle choice and a need for variety.

Comments below on atmosphere are accurate in terms of a pleasant place to dine with a partner or spouse.

The variety of naan gives us the opportunity to tweak our meals differently every time, even if we order the same main dish.  The masala is excellent and also travels well (if you get it to go.)  My experience with the management and staff is much different from some of the other comments - I have never had anything BUT excellent service from everyone in that restaurant.

Prices are in-line with what I'd expect with a nice Indian restaurant.  Peanut allergies prevent me from being more experimental with the dishes, but I can speak for the chicken dishes.  Those dishes have been the proper spice and temperature every time I've been served.

I have eaten at the Clay Pit 3 times now, once for the lunch buffet and straight off the menu for the other two. The food is definitely delicious, albeit portions are a tad bit on the smaller side, its better that way. They have a unique menu and style of their own in presentation that is awesome. I'll take pictures of my Tomato Butter Chicken next time to show you all. Their Naan is excellent, as is their Chicken Pakora. I've tried the plain, garlic basil, paneer, and spinach paneer Naan, all very tasty.

Bar: Hey, with those drink prices on the upside of average (but still tolerable), I had to order one to see what I'd get. The Clay Pit Cosmo was strong and yummy. I'd do it again, but heck if it goes with indian food, no for me. No drinking alcohol with indian food. Too full, too weird. Any restaurant that remembers every time that I prefer room temperature water, no ice and refills it regularly is on my 'A' list.

Overall, eat there! Its a great place, better than those nearby, and normal indian food pricing. If you go after 7 on a Friday night, expect a full house and they take only limited reservations.

We went there because one of our coworker found that a new restaurant had opened in our region. I am an indian and have grown up eating indian food.

It was not the best indian food I ever had or maybe not even in mediocre range. I would prefer priya over it for buffet any time. It has got a very nice setup. Very chick. The lady in charge seems to be in control of lot of things, but still she or the restaurant cant save the food from being criticized. First of all they have very few choices when it comes to Indian food and taste is not at all authentic.

It has recently opened so maybe they will learn and gradually correct where they are lacking. Currently, they really need to work on the taste of the food.

I love Indian food!

While my favorite Indian place is Kanishka in Redmond, the Clay Pit is great in its own right.

The restaurant is lovely inside with comfortable booths and white table clothed tables.  The service is excellent--very friendly and attentive.

And the food?  Yum!  We had the vegetable pakora, boti kebabs, chicken tikka masala, and plenty of naan.  Everything was tasty, and the spice level was just what we ordered.  No complaints from our table!  Instead, just a constant "mmmmmm" as we happily noshed.

Can't wait to go back and try other goodies on the menu.  I love that good Indian food is finally in my 'hood!

Great lunch buffet! The price for regular meals is a bit steep so it's nice to have the lower cost lunch to test the waters.

The food was very pleasing to the taste buds. I especially enjoyed the naan bread selection. Our experience with the staff was fantastic. Each person was welcoming and treated us like family. I want to try dinner soon. The place looks moody and dim for a romantic date night.

food was good.. some of the best Indian food Ive had. but don't let the owners fool you!!! the first time i went there they were really nice, extremely helpful, and extra generous.. the type that you would think would bend over backward for their customers. i ordered the Mango-martini and it was QUITE disgusting. politely i tired to tell them that i was not satisfied with my drink and the owners were very rude. i told her that I'm not asking for a refund, just maybe a replacement or something of the sort and they thought that was a unjust request. the female waitress told my waiter that i was ridiculous and when i talked to the male owner... he was even ruder. basically good food, but if your unhappy with anything they are most likely going to be the rudest people ever!!!

i would go there again but i have never been treated like that at a restaurant and it has tainted my perception.

oh, and the place is kind of small.

I really think this place could use some improvement. For starters, the tandoori fish just didn't have the flavor that tandoori fish should have. It was bland, but came with some kind of sauce, which tasted just ok. It kind of made me wonder why they didn't pour the sauce on the fish while it was cooking instead. The vegetable kofta was more like an appetizer then a full meal, and costs the same price as an entree .  Which was a disappointment, because I had specifically asked our waiter for something that had a dinner sized portion and wasn't like an appetizer. The hostess was a bit frantic when she was talked to about possibly switching the  vegetable kofta with another  entree. Our waiter hardly ever checked on our table, and the wait staff in general just plain seemed to be inexperienced. Hopefully the wait staff, as well as the food, will get better with time.

This is THE best Indian food I have ever had! I absolutely loved it! The service was fast and very nice, the food was excellent (try the Korma and Butter sauces, they're fantastic!), and the decor was very charming. Every time I've eaten here, I've always had a great experience.

We ordered take out and it was quite good.  We had the chicken tikka masala, paneer jeera saag, and naan.  The tika masala and jeera saag were great, while the naan was average.  I look forward to trying out the lunch buffet!

I've been to Claypit about 5 times, and the consistency of quality and service is enough for me to give it 5 stars. I always order the tikka masala (with chicken), tandoori chicken and an order of garlic naan. It's always delicious, and the service is always friendly and polite. One time, the manager even treated me to a free mango ice cream dessert because I went there two dinners in a row, haha :) All in all, everything I've tasted there has been delicious - the samosas, curry, basmati rice... perfect!

The service was so good, that I am pretty sure that my husband and I met every single person that works in that restaurant!  I have been to several Indian restaurants, and this is by far the tastiest.  Our water was never empty, our food was served in a timely fashion, and everything we ordered was delicious.  The staff was polite, and the restaurant was clean and chic.  The portions were too much for me to eat, and the waiter kindly packaged it up for me to take home (it tasted great even reheated the next day!)  We had plain naan, vegetable samosas, tikka masala chicken, and I am not sure what my husband had, but it looked and tasted really good!  I had the chai to drink, and it was great!

This place is perfect for people who don't have much experience with Indian food because the menu explains everything, and if you don't understand, the staff is very willing to please.

This restaurant just recently opened and I stopped in with a coworker for the lunch buffet. I know all new restaurants are look very nice on the inside but this one was immaculate and very fancy. We felt a little on the underdressed side in our jeans and t-shirts. Our water glasses were never empty throughout the whole 45 minutes were were there - it is nice to see that the staff takes care of their buffet customers. The staff was very friendly and stopped by every so often. We asked the nice woman that worked there (she must've been the manager or owner as she was directing the staff around) about recommendations and the taste of some of the dishes they had out and she explained what the ones we had asked about were and described the flavor quite well. Everything we had tasted great, especially this red chicken dish that we had. The naan was free of charge and also quite fresh. Great food, great service, very friendly staff!

Edit 1/18/08 - I have to share an experience I had at this place a little while back. I went here with two coworkers for the lunch buffett again. The food was quite good but the service was a complete change from the previous time. We had trouble getting our waters refilled and had to ask at least three times until we finally flagged down someone in the kitchen area and asked if they could get us some water. It took forever to get the check, and when we did we had to remind the waitress that we needed it split up. After that I paid my bill and was waiting for my change (something like 7 cents...) and the waitress never came back with the change. I was completely shocked. I guess she decided that was her tip. For this I have lowered their score down to 2 stars.
