Review from Andrew M.
Solid Indian food.
Currys are well seasoned. The meat in the chicken tikka masala was a little dry, but otherwise pretty flavorful. Nice and creamy and full of flavor.
Garlic naan was fluffy yet was a little crispy on the edges. Perfect.
Restaurant was pretty empty so we had pretty awesome and attentive service.
Average prices for sit down Indian food.
Parking was a little hard to find, but still. Its like this for the entire area.
I want to try their Indian beer next time. -

3.5.
Found this buffet better than average however it was somewhat empty on a weekday lunch. The dishes weren't labeled so it was not easy to place names with what I saw.
Butter Chicken: Good 3/5
Tandoor Chicken: very good, moist and flavored throughout. 4/5
Saag: good 3/5
Naan: very good with the right amount of : 4/5
For desert, they had Gulab Jaman and Mango Ice Cream (very good).
There was much more but I did not take note, especially when they weren't clearly labeled.
Service was good.
All in all everything was fine, but for some reason, it was not as impressed and I was hoping to be. -

Came here with a friend because she had a coupon (15% off - yay!)
The food was decent, but it didnt have any wow factors, but then again, I've never been amazed by Indian food so this review may be bias. Maybe it was because we ordered the usual and its hard to mess it up. We had the chicken tikki masala. The sauce was a little thicker and more red then what I'm used to, but still decent. We also ordered the veggie curry dish that had chunks of zucchini in them. We ate them with an order of peas and rice as well as one garlic naan.
The restaurant has a bit of the old feel to it - it's dark and the color scheme from the walls to the carpet, chairs, and table cloths were brown and dark red. Even their menus were a bit old - a couple of the pages ripped off as I was flipping through them and it looked like they've attempted to tape them back together with black tape before. -

I have been here twice for lunch on the weekdays with my fellow co-workers. We had the buffet and WOW was I impressed!! For a buffet, it was excellent!!( and it helps that it cost only about $10+tip) But we did go at 11:30 and the food was fresh and tastey! So many great curry dishes to try. Some had more heat than others and they have a lot of veggie dishes just for me :)
A very clean but pretty small place so once it gets packed, the noise level goes up. -

Really great indian food. Some friends of mine live in the area and eat out every night, and this is their go-to Indian spot. Funny enough, all three of us had spent some time in India for work, and thought that the food was very authentic to what we remember from our travels. The sauces are amazing, definitely looking to coming back again with the family for dinner.

I don't know how much this place costs since I go here for company lunches and my boss pays so this review is based only on the lunch buffet and the food without any evaluation of food/price ratios (if I do use food/price ratio to give stars here, then I would get an error since the denominator would be 0).
Buffet is standard Indian fare. You got your curries, you got your tandoori, you got your rice, and you got your naan. Nothing special here. In fact, I can't remember anything that really stood out, which is good (nothing was really terrible) and bad (nothing was really awesome). -

Love this place! Food has been delicious and is very consistent. Delicious thick naan and all curries and sauces are thick and appealing. They have really turned me on to Indian food (maybe had it twice before coming here) and while at first I was working to try out many different meals, I have since succumbed to the mighty will of the chicken saag; with an order of naan it is now my favourite meal of all time. The environment is decent, and the people are friendly (and good at memorizing orders, don't think I've seen a note taken... ever). Can get pricey fast though, so slight warning there. Also, they deliver!

My chicken tikka masala tasted like spicy Chey Boyardee.
Also, $12.95 for 10-11 cubes of chicken (1 chicken breast?).1 Previous Review: Show all »

The naan was really excellent; we tried the plain, onion, and garlic combination... I ordered the clay oven tandoori prawns which was okay but didn't blow my mind. I'll probably go back to try their Malai Kofta since I've enjoyed it at other places. The Pakoras were meh...I've definitely had better. Also their Tamarind sauce was sweeter than I'm used to. It tasted more like honey than typical Tamarind sauce. I'll probably go back because it's close to home (or maybe order for delivery?) but I prefer other places to this one. (:

Meeeh. Luckily I had great company because the service here was pretty terrible. We were one of 3 tables of people (it's a pretty big spot), it took a long time to get our water. The host was very standoffish, and the server was slow.
Based on how slow it took to get the beverages we decided to get the buffet. The buffet was almost empty upon arrival, most of the meat was gone from all of the containers, and the food wasn't very warm. I settled with some saucy rendition of chicken and rice. The bread came out after we started eating followed by two lemonades. The chairs were uncomfortable and they waiters let a family of kids blast rap music on their iPhones. Three separate phones play equally crappy music. Get me out of there.
The lemonade was good. -

Came here with my two girlfriends for lunch 2 months ago as I finally write this review. We were hoping to do the lunch buffet but for whatever reason missed out on it perhaps due to time of arrival. Cute little place http://www.yelp.com/bi... in a cute little small town atmosphere that is San Mateo. Love it! My friends did the ordering so it definitely got me out of my creature of habit dishes that I normally order in Indian places.
THE ORDER:
- Tandoori Chicken
- Lamb Briani
- Matar Paneer
- Chicken Tiki Masala
- Various Naan, Padamum and Paratha
THE YUMMY:
TANDOORI CHICKEN http://www.yelp.com/bi... was pretty good. I enjoyed it.
LAMB BRIANI http://www.yelp.com/bi... was bomb. Lamb was so tender and flavorful. I could have wolfed this down all on my own but held back since I was sharing with my girlfriends and their children. lol
MATAR PANEER http://www.yelp.com/bi... was just ok. I've had better elsewhere.
CHICKEN TIKI MASALA http://www.yelp.com/bi... The meat was dry and not as flavorful as the other dishes, mainly the LAMB BRIANI.
NAAN, PADAMUM & PARATHA were just ok. Padamum seems pretty hard to get wrong though no? Just wasn't aromatic to the senses, seemed rather plain. With the paratha, I'm used to much fluffier versions with pronounced textured layers, but this one was very thin and flat.
THE OVERALL:
The service was pretty good, with one very good looking waiter that I remember distinctly. We ordered wine and Indian beer http://www.yelp.com/bi... to complement our meal. Wine was just ok. I've had better cabs.
But overall, I've had better. Food just failed to set off my senses on a parallel journey. Just wasn't exciting. There seems to be other Indian offerings in the area, so I'd do that next time I'm in the area instead of returning here.Listed in: My Bollywood Adventures, SF- Peninsula

I'm wondering if all these joints called Clay Oven that I've eaten at are in any relation to each other. Perhaps a chain? Who knows...it just might be a generic Indian Restaurant name.
Anyways, this was the only Indian joint I found to be remotely good Indian food in the Peninsula. We came here on a Friday night and just seemed a decade behind in the clientele that they had here, meaning myself an the husband was a decade YOUNGER than the rest of the people here. What the? I am not joking. However, that never deterred me from getting good food. This place came off....average at best.
Their chutney that comes to the table with their naan isn't the best, but again, if you read any of my NoCal yelp reviews, everything has to be taken a notch down from your usual standards. Remember, mediocrity is key to NoCal!!!!
Anywho, back to the food. We got some samosas to start off with. Meh, not much flavoring to it and the wrap that the samosas were wrapped in wasn't crispy, which is disappointing.
However, their vegetable korma along with Chicken Tikka Masala made up for the mediocrity. Not by much, but it was tasty as it could be. The garlic naan could have, oh, I don't know..have more "garlic" on it?
The ambiance is dark, the service was average at best (had to waive down someone a few times for water refills) and the food just didn't come off remotely authentic.
Eh, it's worth a try, but nothing that would make you wanna try it more than once, sorry. -

I used to go to their location in SF when I was living there, but now I come to this one since it is a tad closer.
Overall food is excellent, main differences from SF location -- they offer ice cream and parking is a little bit easier (not by much). -

It is a little uneven, but ranges from decent to delicious (never bad, usually pretty good, sometimes amazing).
I'm a vegetarian, so I love Indian food. It is really the one cuisine my husband and I both like. And we most often go to Clay Oven. I like their Malai Kofta a lot, and hubby chows down on Chicken Tikka Masala with garlic naan. Yum!
A lunch buffet has good dahl and endless naan, all for about $11 inclusive. Great deal. -

I LOVE NORTH INDIAN FOOD. A LOT. That said, it seems like most North Indian restaurants are at least pretty good. The buffets all seem to have your basic Tandoor chicken, butter chicken, some saag thing, curry chicken, some salad, some mutter paneer, an eggplant or vegetarian tikka masala or something, and some free plain naan. The dinners all seem to have the classic dishes as well. I guess chefs have figured out how to make it all tasty.
Clay Oven is a case in point. Is it anything "special"? Not really. It's just as I described above. Is it a good value? Sure; about average. Is the food good? Usually yes. And the service? You may not get a lot of friendliness and smiling, but it gets the job done. I will say the tall owner-type-guy, acting as a host, seemed a little surly for years. I don't see him around anymore though.
Buffet -- Good. Everything is tasty. Selection is standard. My favorites, butter chicken and tandoori chicken, always satisfy. They also have these fried bread things... I love them. Too much. They do not seem very healthy. The plain naan, on the other hand, is rather... plain.
Dinner -- Usually good. I usually go with chicken tikka masala (let's be honest... the best non-vegetarian curry ever invented) medium-spicy, plus a garlic naan. All of it is quite tasty. My wife likes the malai kofta (vegetarian), and I like it too. Mwahaha. I often end up eating parts of that too. There is one criticism, which doesn't seem to pop up anymore thankfully, and that is on some nights the chicken tikka masala curry was incredibly thin! On those nights I'd give this restaurant 1 star.
Bathroom -- Gross.
Parking -- Can be hell.
By the way, they deliver if the order is over $20. At least they used to. -
Review from Albert L.
The white paper sheets they place on top of their tables are cut a little larger than the table themselves. What's the significance of this? Last time I ate here, I got an ENORMOUS papercut on my hand as I moved to grab a napkin.
Also, the chicken in the tikka masala was dry dry dry. Not planning to come back. -

Visit to Clay oven was a disaster as my visit was purely based on reviews from my fellow Yelpers for this restaurant. I am highly disappointed as i have seen better Indian restaurants managed and run by non-Indians which are more tastier and closer to be called Indian food.
If you are a true Indian taste lover you should not visit this place. I am putting one star because of the Punjabi chai which they sell is very good. Except that i cannot even imagine any resemblance to Indian taste for any other dish which they have on menu. -

Clay Oven is a good place to eat. I enjoy the lunch buffet as they offer a great selection for an inexpensive price.
I generally order delivery from here. It's an expensive dinner for delivery, but it's worth it every now and then. I'm so glad they offer this service. -

I mean I've tried to give them another chance first time at there other location and they emailed me to come in for a free meal I went there but I didn't ask for the free meal I don't want them to take extra care of me but no they didn't change that's it I won't go back there ever again and be careful before u choose to go there, they over charged me on bread and took 45 min for bread to come out and it was all cut in half like it's all bread put together
Sorry clay oven -

The food should get four stars, but delivery brings it down because it took a full hour.
But if you're walking-in, you'll enjoy the food. Delivery guy was nice and friendly too. Just took too long, imho. -

Excellent flavors and service. Ordered the vindaloo spicy, and at first thought it was medium at most, but it had a complex warmth that only grew over time. The saag was a little too creamy for our taste (but still a tasty dish); everything else was very good.

This place is great! Elegant white-tablecloth service and and a really large menu of the best Indian food in town at moderate prices. I usually eat a nice meal for under $60 for two people with drinks and tip. It probably has the most honest staff anywhere. I accidentally dropped a $100 bill on the floor and the waiter ran after me for half a block to give it back. I couldn't recommend this place more.

Marginally better than Bombay Garden (a few steps away):
- cleaner linen
- softer naan bread
- newer feel
Otherwise Bombay Garden has better selection and slightly better quality. -

Ended up spending a little more than desired on Indian take-out ($20pp), but food was okay. Enjoyed the chicken tikka masala and aloo saag, but pass on the vegetable samosa next time. My bf and I would come here again for a quick Indian food fix.

I arrived at 10pm to an empty restaurant and gave them an opportunity to tell me they were closing early, but they graciously gestured at the empty tables and said, "Please sit anywhere you like."
As a rule, if a restaurant's name contains a particular dish or cuisine, I order that. So naturally I ordered tandoori chicken. This is one of the better ones I've tasted. It was, of course, served sizzling hot, and was moist, tender, and had the correct orange color, not that bright red monstrosity you see so often.
I also ordered lamb vindaloo, requesting "as hot as possible." Boy was it spicy! But good.
As a side note, apparently I understand one of the languages spoken in the Indian subcontinent. I've only studied Spanish, but I could understand what the waiter and kitchen staff were saying! A miracle, right?
Aside #2: I once laughed when a sushi chef in India responded to my question, "Where is your tuna from?" with "The sea." Today, I asked my waiter, "What cuisine do you specialize in? Northern? Southern? Pakistani?". The response was, "Indian." Did I mention I could understand his language? -

This is our usual place to order delivery when we are in the mood for Indian food! It has been a hit & miss with this place in the past but it was exceptionally good this time around so I had to update my review!
We did their online ordering system. Very easy to navigate and was able to specify degree of spicyness. They called me within 10 minutes to confirm order and 30 minutes later the door bell rang with the most friendliest delivery guy!
We ordered the following dishes:
2 Garlic
2 Rice Pilav
1 Bhindi Bhaji (okra)-spicy
1 Chicken Tikka Masala-mild
1 Lamb Saag-spicy
Was so good, my husband and I were fighting who would get the leftovers for lunch the next day!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Wow as I took my first bite of chicken the sky's were opened and a tear fell from my eye, TALK ABOUT GOOD! It was well worth the wait to eat here I had the Bread with Goat Cheese the cucumber salad, and the chicken along with a couple of $ 8.75 dollar beers! The beer was malty and very good I am going back as soon as I get paid! It haunts me in my DREAMS!!

Review from Rishi G.
Much like every Indian restaurant I've ever been to, the service is abysmal. I have a theory that Indians always give crappy service to other Indians because it's some form of self hate. I guess we're the Jewish people of Asia.
Fortunately, the food is quite good. I'll describe the dishes I've had below:
Velvet Butter Chicken: Butter chicken is the reason I came here. I have fond memories of this dish growing up. Make no mistake, it's not a healthy dish - but when done correctly, it tastes amazing. The Clay Oven version was quite good, no complaints. It didn't pop on my tastebuds the way that I expect butter chicken too, but it was still executed well. 4 stars.
Chicken Tikka: There's a reason this is sometimes considered the national dish of England. Even if you don't like Indian food very much, you'll probably like this dish. The spices are generally not too strong, and it's got a flavorful creamy sauce. The Clay Oven version is probably the best one I've had. 5 stars.
Chicken Coconut Curry: I didn't care for the sauce in this dish. It was bland and not memorable at all. 2 stars.
Chicken Korma: This was great. Not everybody likes nuts in their food, but if you do, you should get this dish. The texture of the sauce offered a nice contrast with the crunchiness of the nuts, and when mixed with basmati rice, the combination was very tasty. 4 stars.
Lamb Rogan Josh: This was a popular dish in my household growing up, so I was curious how this version compared to my Dad's. It was almost as good, but the sauce was too watery for my liking. Don't get this dish if you don't like the slightly gamey taste of lamb, as it's not masked by the sauce at all. But if you like lamb, it's worth a shot. 3.5 stars.
The online ordering system is pretty good, that's what I normally do. And as a tip, prepare some rice at home - it'll save you a few dollars. There's no brown rice option here if you're trying to be healthy. But if you want to splurge, get the Saffron rice with peas, it'll take all the dishes to a new level.
I recommend this place. But if you're Indian, get the order to go - and use a fake name on the order. Tip: Most Indians can pass for Mexican. -

Yummy! My husband and I had been meaning to try Clay Oven for awhile so we decided to head over for a really late lunch/really early dinner. Despite it being 3:00 in the afternoon, there was another couple there eating too.
We couldn't decide on an appetizer so our waiter suggested we try the Vegetable Samosas. Delicious! They were crispy on the outside and stuffed with a combination of potatoes, spices, and peas. They were served with some sort of garbonzo beans in a red sauce with cilantro. I loved these! I even sopped up the sauce with my samosa.
For our meal, we ordered the Clay Oven sampler platter. It had prawns, two different types of chicken, and two different types of lamb served on a bed of seared onions. Everything was flavorful and juicy. The ground lamb was a little too charred on the outside but still good. We also got Chicken Tikka Masala, which was my favorite. The sauce was very aromatic and this time I sopped it up with my garlic naan. We also ordered saffron basmati rice which nicely completed the buttery-ness of the tikka masala sauce.
Everything was delicious, the service was great, and we left feeling satisfied and talking about coming back again! -

Came here to pick up a to go order for a late lunch out in Central Park. Was really disappointed to not find a fork, napkins, or in fact anything else in my order of a Chicken entree besides the kabobs. Kind of expected perhaps some rice, naan, vegetables or ANYTHING really when you pay $14.
The container had cubes of chicken meat, which were good, but really kind of hard to enjoy without absolutely anything else to go along with it.
Something tells me they bring you more food when you order this entree in the restaurant. At the least, a suggestion for these items would have been appreciated. -

Love this restaurant. Anything and everything in the menu is yummy. Price is reasonable. I've only been to the actual restaurant once but that was a good experience. And even when we usually order for delivery, food is still hot and super fresh. One of my favs in the Peninsula. If you like Indian food... you must try Clay Oven.

Order and ratings!
Kingfisher Beer *****-Makes me nostalgic for Bangalore
Aloo Paratha ***-I love the potato stuffing in wheat and not in all purpose flour, tends to be a hit or miss when you make it. Mine were underdone
Butter Vegetables ***-Hmm, this curry was fresh, tasted heavenly, but the color of it was unhealthy.
Authentic Indian curry sauce doesn't look deep orange, plus anything that has as much butter as this curry had isn't good cos another trick about indian cooking is that you can mask your mistakes by adding more butter to it. You don't put the spices into the butter but the butter into the spices that is a basic thumb rule to blend in the flavors which obviously wasn't followed.
Plus, the spice levels were high. indian food is relatively more spicy than other cuisines, but I requested a medium spice, the curry turned out spicier than I would normally cook.
Pilaf ***- nothing to write about.
Service**** good staff that are attentive. Not very communicative though.
Decor*** may look good in the evenings, during the day the Taj Mahal on the walls make it look like a sad impression of a set in a bollywood movie that flopped
Restroom- No stars! Do not venture into a zone that cannot be described by people who tried using it. You don't want to see the expression on my face when I got out of the restroom.
I would go back here if the other 2 Indian restaurants aren't open and i crave for food that I am tired of cooking. -

So I really like "Indian" food i.e. Anglo-Indian... with that being said I am not even going to pretend I know what great Indian food is.
I have to admit the menu was overwhelming there were so many choices and everything really looked great. What to choose - what to choose...
So I turned to my very friendly and helpful waiter and went with his suggestions.
We ended up with Tandoori chicken which was really good so moist so juicy. The real star of the night was the fish Tikka Masala... OMG...large chunks of perfectly cooked salmon in a very spicy curry. To die for!
Only thing I would change is that I can't drink beer or wine so I wish they had a bar. But of course that is not a necessity just a dream! -

My fiance and I are just about addicted to Clay Oven. We frequent the San Mateo and SF locations way too often and if we're not there we get takeout! He always orders the chicken tikka masala with lots of garlic naan. We just tried the prawn goa curry last week and it's definitely making it onto our regular order. Another fave is the aloo saag (vegetarian): spinach and potatoes.
Order extra naan...believe me you'll want more! -

Whether or not it's eat in or delivery this is truly one of the best Indian restaurants for quality and taste. The sauces here are always fresh and not watered down. All of the food they are served with is fresh as well. I've tried pretty much the whole menu over time and have no complaints about any of the dishes served. The lunch buffet is pretty good too. I have tried many other Indian restaurants and have gotten sick and or noticed the food was tasteless and prepared way in advance.

My husband and I had an early dinner here this week and were pleased with our experience. We ordered the lamb saag, prawn vindaloo, and goat cheese nan. We asked for medium spicy, and both dishes were plenty spicy for us. We'd like go mild next time. The saag was particularly tasty and very good with the nan. My husband did experience some gastrointestinal discomfort the next day, though I did not. Like another reviewer, we have put that down to unfamiliar spices. I introduced my husband to Indian food a couple of years ago, and we have tried a few places in that time. He has said that he will be happy to go back to the Clay Pot, despite the consequences. That is probably as good an endorsement as you can get!
