Convenient location/walking distance to Indy Marriott + awesome fish n chips + not carding people under 21 so that everyone in our group could get in = yay! My boss suggested Rathskeller to me when I told him I was going to Indy - he went to IUPUI - but I think it's a little bit more of a walk than Claddagh's. I'm glad we came here though - had a late girl's night out with good food - fish n chips, bangers & champ - good times! The live band/duo even played a Coldplay song we requested - loved that.
Service was good, price was good for the yummy food - will be back if I come back to Indy!
this place is worth checking out. The weekends get a bit crowded and they are strict on their VIP events. It is better to attend right after work since you can fully enjoy the space.
This place has great food and good beer. I love the menu although some of the items are over priced their sandwiches and pub grub are great! I love the steak fries and the seasoned sour cream sauce is awsome! They have several great beers on tap and quite a good selection in the bottle. The service is always quick and friendly.
I've been to CIP twice. The first time in early 2008 revealed the place as a very nicely atmospheric Irish pub with good food and good drink, but high prices. Of course, that was before the economic downturn really kicked in. A recent visit found that the atmosphere remains comfortable, the food and drink well-prepared and tasty, but now accompanied by appealingly priced specials and more attentive service.
I used to come to this location relatively often, as I used to work right down the street.
I loved when they had live music -- SO FUN!
The fish & chips are the best -- and so many good beers on tap. The shepherds pie was also great!
This review is based only on beer and the one bartender who we interacted with. This place had the best beer selection of any bar I went to in this trip to Indy. Maybe only one or two uber domestics (bud/coors/crap/whatever), guinness/bass/harp, some belgian ales (yum!) and a few other imports (boddingtons, etc). The bartender was really cool and not overly talkative, but interesting when she did talk to us. She also made good black & tans.
My friend enjoyed the wide selection of scotch.
Monday Night Football was on the TVs in the bar, too. Good times.
My only complaint is more a complaint about Indiana in general... It was a little smokey. Not nearly as bad as other bars, but any smokey is really junk.
I love the Claddagh downtown! I've been to their Plainfield and northside locations too, but this one is the best! It's a great place to go for dinner or just to grab a beer. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and I find it especially cozy in the winter. As any Irish pub should, the Claddagh has plenty of beers to choose from and they also have several half & half selections - like Black & Tan (Guinness & Harps), Black Moon (Guinness & Blue Moon), etc.
For dinner, I usually opt for the standard - Fish & Chips. They are very good here- the breading on the fish is excellent and has just the right amount of beer flavor in it. The cod sandwich is good too. I had the bangers & mash (Irish sausages and mashed potatoes) once, and they were really good, but the fish remains my favorite. My boyfriend is absolutely in love with their meatloaf sandwich and also likes their shepherd's pie.
We went to the Claddagh last 4th of July, had dinner on the patio, and had a perfect spot to watch the downtown fireworks - just get a table that is close to Meridian Street. It's not too crowded there, so we thought this was a good choice for the festivities, and it was pretty easy to get out of downtown afterward.
Excellent food. It is worth the money. This is a good place to go on a date. Fun, classy atmosphere. Of course the drinks are delicious.
A really fun place to go for dinner or just to hang out and have a few.
I heart fish n chips. Claddagh's tartar sauce is extra yummy too. Oh, and the fries are fantastic.
Also, the spinach artichoke dip is phenomenal. Be careful to save room for your entree. It'll be tough!
Great selection of food and beer. Atmosphere is awesome! Take your time while you dine, enjoy a cigar and sample the many great beers.
I stopped in at the Claddagh twice during my 4-day stay in Indianapolis, once for drinks and once for lunch. Overall, it's a great bar and restaurant, with a laid-back crowd and staff.
The bar was hopping on Saturday night when I was in for drinks, but luckily the bar itself is huge so there was no wait for beers. I found the same typically super-friendly service here that I saw in most of the establishments in this town, and the locals soon invited me and my boy to join their party. Good times!
The most awesome thing about the Claddagh, though, is the incredible fish and chips lunch we enjoyed on a Monday afternoon. The fish and chips special is two-for-one all day on Mondays, and it is so worth it! This was easily the best fish and chips I've ever had, with a huge tasty portion of deliciously battered cod and excellent crispy-fried wedges of potato cooked in a light batter. This special is to die for!
The decor of the Claddagh is pleasant and dark with your typical Irish-y feel, and lots of little nooks and crannies to hang out in. This is a very solid place to check out in downtown Indianapolis.
I must say I'm extremely disappointed that they have not had live irish music at this place since the first time I went there 4 years ago. Nevertheless, the Claddagh serves a mean variety of brews, the food is excellent Irish fare as well as some American stuff, and the people who go here are generally attractive types. It doesn't hurt that the place serves Strongbow, my favorite cider from when I studied in London.
You'll find me here frequently for dinner, occasions, or if I'm waiting for my laundry to get done.
There are more Claddagh's spreading across the midwest, but this is the original and still the best. The owners are from Ireland (Galway, if I remember correctly), and everything is extremely authentic.
The codfish (fish & chips) is phenomenal. Unless you're on a gorgefest, just get the small order. Believe me, it's more than enough. Also, the mussels are some of the best I've ever had inland, and better than the majority I've had even in the northeast. Some of the other dishes aren't quite as impressive, but much of that could just be because I think they give you way too much food.
I'll take a couple points off for the smoking. Indianapolis's "smoking ban" is one of the most toothless I've ever seen, as it seems that every place possible has just used the loophole of declaring part of the restaurant "over 21" and turning that into the smoking section. In a place as open as the Claddagh, the "ban" is completely worthless.
My wife and I had a great time at this bar. We arrived about 7:30 on a Sat night and found no problem getting a seat. We tried the fish and chips (delicious) and the Irish monte cristo (also delicious). They have a great selection of Irish whiskeys and I thought the prices were reasonable. Only small down-check was not having bulmer's/magner's Irish cider. If you are in the downtown area, this is a great place to start your night.
Great Irish Restaurant. The food is great. They have a large selection of whiskey and a decent selection of beer. You have to try the Irish Car Bomb. It will knock your socks off and make you sing a new tune like boom sha lock lock boom.
A little intimidating for those not used to Irish cuisine - but very good nonetheless! Great atmosphere - a little loud even during lunch - so don't go expecting an intimate setting.
My friend and I dined here after a day's worth of shopping in Circle Centre. The food is Irish-pub fare--with a twist. It's good, but not great. However, the fourth star comes from the decor in the restaurant/bar. You actually feel like you're in a pub in Dublin! I'd much rather save my money for some pints of Guinness and enjoy the cool atmosphere with a bunch of pals.
Nice dark irish pub, unpretentious and fun. It's a good place to come with friends who just wanna get hammered without the drama of some of the other bars in the neighborhood. They make a helluva car bomb too.
Really good food at a good price. Every month when I go to Indy, I stop here for the fish fry (gigantic). Their soups and sandwiches are good, too. And in the summer, you can get a Shandy, which really pleases me! All the decor was brought directly from Ireland (so I'm told by the waitress) including the painters who painted the walls.
I love this bar. It's so Irish - with really good food and beer. But the cigarette smoke is disgusting. If this bar was in a non-smoking city, I'd go there once a week. As it is, I haven't been back since Indianapolis banned smoking in restaurants and some bars. Now I have a choice, so I vote with my money. But if you're a smoker and you don't mind the smell on your clothes, by all means try it!
