Review from Peter C.
Pasadena, CA
We were staying at the Hilton over the weekend so we did the three minute walk to City View for dim sum. Yes, there are definitely a lot of cheaper dim sum places nearby but, we wanted to a nicer and more importantly, cleaner place to go to.
Yes, you do pay more but, we didn't mind this one time. Couldn't do it all the time because it was more expensive than what we pay for dim sum back in the San Gabriel valley were we live. However, we were on vacation so we wanted to go to a nicer place and we weren't disappointed.
The service was very good and attentive and we found the dim sum to be quite good. It got pretty busy by noon and there was a good mixture of asians and non-asians.
So, if you are looking for a bargain, this is definitely not the place but, if you are looking for a more pleasant and cleaner place to go to, this is it. -

Colorado Springs, CO
Fairly ordinary fare and a little pricey.
Ambience: Very busy but perhaps this was because it was Chinese NY. Mostly Chinese clientele which should be a good sign.
Service: Hit and miss. The hostess was rude and all but ignored everyone asking only to be put on her list. Meanwhile my actual waiters were very pleasant. The dim sum waiters could be lined up or non-existent for long periods at a time.
Food: Meh. Seeing all the Chinese here I was hopeful of something a little more out of the norm but it was your typical Americanized dim sum. Nothing more unusual than fried tofu. And mostly fairly bland in flavors too. The only memorable item was the Peking duck.
Price: Overpriced but probably due to being right in the financial district. Certainly way more than the prices for equally good fare in Chinatown (only a couple of blocks away). Of course, the place is also more spacious and cleaner than you'd find there.
Overall, it was not as good as I hoped upon seeing the long wait line. -

Wow this place got nasty since the last time I tried it. They totally cater to non-Asian customers like Ton Kiang on Geary. Not only was the food not good but it was also came out to $40 for two people for dim sum (overpriced!).
I knew I should have ran away when I walked in and saw that out of 20+ tables, there were ZERO tables of Asian customers. If you are non-Asian, don't like being surrounded by Asian people and don't know your dim sum, you will find this place just fine and dandy. -

$48 for lunch for two people?
Because of the language barrier, you can't ask how much the dishes are and there is no menu for reference (at least that's what they told me at lunch time). So you have no choice but to order blindly.
The dim sum was just okay but not worth the price. Aside from the fact that you get to experience the whole order-from-a-cart thing but ironically, some of my favorite Chinatown hole-in-the-walls actually have better quality.
Would I go back? Nah, I'm good. -

Came up for a boys trip up to SF and met up with fellow Yelper David K. and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I'm more of a fan of those Dim Sum restaurants that have a C rating/ Mom and Pop feel to it. I don't like the ones that are super catered to White people. I feel like a lot of Dim Sum restaurants in West LA are just that. Dim Sum has been the new, cool, hip place to go eat for Brunch on the weekends. This place was more of the former than the latter. If you want an authentic Dim Sum restaurant experience in SF. Then look no further.
*Your usual selection of Dim Sum Items & Decent prices. I'd come back again. Cheers! -

The first time I had dim sum was pretty unmemorable. Everything tasted bland and I thought it just wasn't for me. However, dim sum at City View changed all of that for me.
I've had dim sum a few times at City View and each time the experience is great. All of the small plates are brought around to each table in small carts and you pick out what you like. You also get huge pots of tea and carafes of water. I like to try a little bit of everything and my favorites are the potstickers, BBQ pork buns, pork dumplings, shrimp dumplings, and chicken siu mai. Each special plate has tons of flavor and are all perfect for sharing. There is something for everyone! I never leave City View without have their desserts. We always share the custard buns! It's a small little puff filled with tons of sweet custard.
City View is located in the ever bustling and busy FiDi and is always filled with huge groups during peak lunch hours. I definitely recommend making a reservation because the wait time can be long. City View is probably the best dim sum I've ever had and you should definitely try it if you love dim sum or want to try a unique experience.Listed in: FiDi Eats!

We picked this place after not being able to find parking in Chinatown this weekend (Chinese New Year). Paid a bit more than we would have Chinatown, but we found the service and food to be very good.

Overall, City View is a solid place to go for dim sum in Chinatown. The restaurant decor and atmosphere is above average and the dim sum are good. Nothing we had from the carts stood out as being amazing, but everything was tasty and good.
The sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves was very good. We had to special order it and it did take a while to come to the table, but it was very moist and had a little sauciness to it from the char siu pork.
On cold days, try to sit towards the back because it gets drafty even 1/2 way into the restaurant due to the front door opening. -

My family is from Hong Kong and I hold Dim Sum restaurants to a very VERY high standard, and honestly I was disappointed.
This is exactly what happens when Chinese restaurants forget that they are CHINESE and try to please white tourists.
In a small space that is only half full, there is no excuse that I have to ask for har gow TWICE before receiving it. I have seen dim sum restaurants with 500 diners get the food they ask for quicker. The whole point of a dim sum house is quick & good.
As for the har gow, honestly, it was below par. The way to judge a good har gow is how thin the skin is and the skin was simply too thick. The fried sesame balls were good, and the char shui boa was fresh even if it was a bit small. There weren't any of my favorite goodies like chicken feet or snails, but again, I assume this is because this restaurant is too worried about scaring away the white customers rather than producing good dim sum.
Finally, the reviewers on here who complain about other dim sum houses being too noisy or with Chinese families with kids running around, please keep going to places like this while those of us who actually appreciate authentic dim sum will go to the noisy places with excellent food. That's the point of going to a restaurant in my book. -

Should I start with the unfriendly door host or the dirty table or the slow service?
Luckily, that didn't affect the food too much, but definitely takes a couple stars off. As for the food, we went for dim sum. It was sllooowwwwww and everything was pretty typical, nothing stood out. There are way too many dim sum places that are much quicker, better and with nicer staff then for me to ever go to this place again. -

Came in here for the Dim Sum lunch. We just beat the lunch rush by just a couple of mins. Arrived at 1140am. I was suprised how many people suddenly came in after us. Totally filled the place.
We had a variety of things as one would imagine. I appreciate that they give you the flat bun with the duck, not just the sauce. The chicken feet were tasty and a bit spicy. Spicier then most places. Kinda wich they were bigger though. They didn't have any sesame balls with the bean paste, I actually had to ask them for it. Never saw them on a cart. The rest of the dishes were good, just as good as any place in my home town, San Diego.
The service was good and quick. They have pretty much any dish that every other DIm Sum place has. I do like how clean the place is. I'd go back for sure. -

This is my favorite Dim Sum place in SF.
The food is fresh and delicious, especially the steamed pork buns.
The prices are quite reasonable, and everything tastes awesome.
Make sure you get there before 1:30 (I think) for the full Dim Sum experience, after that they don't have the carts out anymore. -
Review from Seiji N.
With my limited dim sum experience, I'd say this place was more chill than the others I've been to. Perhaps it was because we were seated in a corner table, but there seemed to be less asian families with their kids running around than the dim sums down in socal. There's actually space to walk in the aisles when the servers are walking around with their carts full of deliciousness.
Although I did not get overwhelmed by the servers at this place, as always, remember to take a seasoned veteran of dim sum with you. -
Review from sasha h.
Often very crowded at lunch on the weekdays, expect to wait for food that you would expect to be much better than it is. Cost effective for a group but otherwise can be pricey if you want to try multiple things for just 2-3 people. I usually have to ask for water and it often arrives half way through my meal but tea is always there. The food comes around quickly in the carts but if you want something that you haven't seen it takes a while to get someone to order it for you and then eventually make its way to the table. Getting someone's attention is very hard, paying the bill is an elongated process because of it. Thankfully i now only go here when i'm with people that speak chinese and somehow my entire dining experience is more efficient.
Service aside, food is pretty good for lunch and they can seat a pretty big group which is a plus since we often come with 10-15 people. What we like: turnip cakes (so yummy), pork buns, sesame chicken, eggplant tofu, chicken feet, all the siu mai are so-so, glazed walnut prawns (sweet but good), seafood dumpling, sticky rice, shrimp dumpling -

I really do enjoy some dim sum and when my friend considered about eating some at san fran, I was extremely excited. Yes food gets me this way. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated so I'll give them kudos. Anyways, after getting my favorite dishes, I thought the taste was pretty good but after getting the check. I thought WOW, $68 for three people. Seriously, my family would get more plates than what we got and the check would be half the price. I'm not sure if I'll be coming back here, but I have the right to change my mind. We'll see.

Oh man. Overpriced and un-fresh, this is a crap place for dim sum.
Check out Dol Ho up the hill. It might not look like much, but it'll taste a lot better than this turd of a restaurant. -
Review from Steve V.
Came here early on a Sunday to avoid the lines. An 11am arrival accomplished that as we were seated immediately. This place is one with the carts so you can be eating within seconds. The carts come by fairly often but I didn't see as much variety as I would have expected.
The servers are friendly and speak enough English. There are plenty of Non-Chinese here as this place is well-known. At times, it did not have that authentic feel. The food is average and I truly was just expected more. for the two of us, the bill came to $46, also not as cheap as I would have thought. The interior is nice though and perhaps that is what you are paying for.
PARKING TIP: They do validate for the Portsmouth Garage around the corner. -
Review from Sally T.
what a rip off!
8 dishes equally scattered across the "small", "large" and "special" categories on the little stampy card set us back $40 and change! really??? the har gow were pathetic...i mean if they were any drier they would give off static electricity. as a matter of fact, there was another dumpling type thing that was dry too...
oh and they didn't come back with the change because they just assumed we wanted to leave that as a tip. whack.
one saving grace is they are clean.
that is all.
will not go back.
you should stay away too. -

Between my bf n I, the bill was $45 includes tips. We ordered a lot of food. We wanted to try everything we possibly can. We ordered the typical (i.e shui mai and pot sticker). I love their chicken feet; probably the tastiest chicken feet I ever had. Their shui mai was good but it was a little dry. My bf tried Chinese broccoli for the first time; he didn't hate it. I love Chinese broccoli; but I had much better. My bf n I bought sesame balls for dessert; they're delish! I could eat 20 of these by myself lol. Bf also ordered sesame chicken; it was salty n sweet. It's ok, I didn't think it was excellent. I had their fried rice cake; it was very tasty... My bf didn't like it cuz it taste fishy to him.
They bring out a pitcher of water; great addition since Chinese food are typically on the salty side.
Our server was friendly; wasn't bad service. They filled our pitcher as soon as it looks low.
I came here on a Tuesday morning. Chinatown is busy!!! Parking; we couldn't find any street parking (you can't park on the meters with yellow lanes, unless you have a van or truck); we had to park in the garage valet. For about 1 hour and 15 mins; we paid $10.50. :(
Overall, I'm glad I was able to try great dim sum while I'm away from home. -

I still consider myself a dim sum novice, but I've been to a few dim sum places now, and I think City View is probably the best I've tried so far. I've come here a couple times with colleagues during lunch and we've never had trouble getting what we needed as far as decent service and a variety of dishes.
I stay mostly veg, but I do eat seafood, and I've always eaten well here. Their spinach dumplings were excellent, as were their seafood offerings. I have to give a nod to their delicious sesame balls and their egg custard tarts that were right out of the oven. The down side is that it caters to the FiDi crowd and it does get pricey. If you come with a hungry group, expect to pay $25-30 each, boo. -

It's a travesty that this restaurant has the same Yelp ranking as Great Eastern. I am the Duke of Great Eastern and there's a reason for that. It's perfect. It's delicious and it's cheap. No, they don't come around with the carts that people seem to love you so much but they do at City View. So if that's your thing, great. Aside from the carts, I can't really say much more positive about City View. I guess I can comment on its cleanliness. It seems clean and nice looking.
But for dim sum? Just not good.
The reason I tried City View is, despite my addictive love affair with Great Eastern, I am always on the look out for another Dim Sum place. I'm always willing to expand my dim sum selection. A friend actually suggested this place to me and had the nerve to say it was on par if not better than Great Eastern.
He is no longer my friend.
At least he's not a friend I can trust when it comes to asian cuisine. Every dish that came out was consistently disappointing. I had convinced two other friends to come with me (two other dim sum fanatics) and they consistently complained about the quality of the dumplings we were receiving.
In the end, I only felt the pot stickers and the leek dumplings were any sort of decent. Everything else we ordered was bland or worse.
There's a bunch of dim sum places in the city. You can skip this one. -

While the food is very good, if it is crowded, and you happen not to be Asian, good luck trying to even get the hostess to take your name down, much less give you a table. We stood for almost 10 minutes with her never returning to the host stand, finally she walks past and I ask, "Can I put my name down on the list?" She stares at me for a few seconds, doesn't answer, turns around and walks away. When she comes back, another guys on the other side of the crowd away from the host stand asks to put his name down and she takes it before taking ours. She seemed totally overwhelmed, and was not qualified to be a hostess.

Not bad ! Service was kinda shitty but what do u expect in chinatown. I went with my chinese friend and she ordered a bunch of stuff that I had no clue what they were, but they were all good. My fav were these stuffed crab leg things. Next dim sum joint I go to will be a hole in the wall just for kicks.

-1 star: a place called City View w/o anything close to a city view.
-1 star: any dim sum place that is not Great Eastern.
Now, with that out of the way, this is certainly a solid choice for dim sum, especially for lunch. Service is quick. The place is clean. The choices are ho-hum...but standard. The food is decent. And you're in and out in 40 minutes.
Best part about City View is that the line is significantly shorter than at Great Eastern and the bill is significantly less than at Yank Sing. -

undisclosed prices for dishes across the "small", "large" and "special" categories on the little stamps card set us back $98 for 4 adults and an 98 year old grandma with regular dishes without any alcohol (just tea)
A "Special" for $8 for a small rice roll with a few shrimp?
Really price? the were pathetic.
Food is average
but great service, so we gave 15% for tip
We will not go back.
You should check out the hidden price before seating down. -

Quite possibly the best dim sum I've ever had. They have all of my dim sum favorites and then some. Not to mention everything is super fresh... no fishy tasting dumplings (sick).
I went today with friends and we literally stayed an extra 15 minutes hounding the staff to please bring us pea shoot dumplings because they are THAT good. I also had my first soup dumpling here... to die for. I literally crave them every Sunday now and want to go back into the kitchen in hopes that someone's tiny Asian grandma will teach me how to make them.
I digress...
Anyway, I cant speak for any other Dim Sum places in SF, but City View is clean, takes reservations and they have a great selection of delicious treats going around on carts. Done and done. -

Review from Norm G.
Yes, it is very spendy. But in this case, I think you do get what you pay for. We came here for yum cha (dim sum) one morning, and it was packed with people. My wife remarked that she could tell by the way people were dressed, that it was a bit more upscale than the normal dim sum places we tend to frequent. I really enjoyed their dumplings with chives and the shu mai. And as Yosie G. mentioned in a review a few years ago, they really do use real crab claw in their crab claw dumplings--a real nice touch, I think. My son declared that their char siu bau was the best he ever had anywhere (even better than Sportful Garden in Hong Kong). And he ate THREE of them, so he must have really liked them. I'm not a huge fan of char siu bau, but I did notice there were no hard bits of fat in these that I have encountered in other restaurants. We had jasmine tea, and it was a pretty good quality brew. All the tables were taken upstairs, and there was a downstairs too (where the restrooms are), but those tables were not being used. Perhaps they are used when dinner is served. I couldn't eat here often on my current salary, but once every few years when I visit San Francisco, this place will definitely be at the top of my list!

Loved this place! I just wished I could have eaten even more! Location is in a little alley, definitely without a city view. As usual with dim sum, if you don't see something they have, just ask, and they'll bring it out to you!

The dim sum is pretty average but fresh and tasty. A little bit on the pricey side. They do tend to get busy after 12 so I'd suggest getting there a little earlier if you have a big party and they do take reservations. They do have a fairly friendly staff.
Be forewarned, their table cloths & napkins will leave white lint all over your dark clothes!! -

Dim sum virgin here. I've never been to dim dum before. I"m glad this was the first place.
I was very hungry by the time we arrived. First thing that came around was the duck with buns. Very good. Tried the turnip thing, think this was was just okay because I'm not used to the texture. Chinese broccoli, pork buns, shrimp rolls (fried and wrapped in white thing), pork in pastry, and a few other's I can't remember.
Yummy, yummy, yummy. -

Ain't no Yank Sing!
My friend recommend this place and I was open to try a new spot. Uh huh honey. Mediocre at best.
The staff is not professional, helpful or friendly. The dim sum is just OK.
We got there at 1:45 and they stop serving dim sum at 2. All we got was a few choices of old and hard hockey puck style dim sum. Hard to tell how many choices they have but I doubt it's not as many as the real deal.
Yes, Yank Sing is much more expensive but it's well worth it. -

Dim sum carts! Yesss! It's long been a dream of mine to enjoy some hot, steaming dim sum delivered in fresh batches right to my table for the pickin'. But sadly, that dream cannot be realized in the Triangle. And whenever I'm in SF for work, I can't seem to convince anyone to join me in this indulgence.
So on recent visit, I tricked an unsuspecting colleague into joining me on our free lunch. Turns out, she's vegetarian! Luckily the servers were really good about pointing out and bringing around some dishes she could try. I ordered a shrimp/chive dumpling, fried pork, sesame ball, tofu & eggplant, veggie dumpling, and egg-y tart thing. What a difference from the dim sum in the Triangle. Everything was better and way fresher, with the exception of maybe the fried pork, which is tastier and stuffed fatter back home.
Our bill ran us $35, which is pretty high for lunch. But I can say we left feeling pleasantly plump! And for now, my cart food cravings have been quelled.Listed in: When in SF...

Review from Aloysius C.
Oh the horror that is this restaurant.
Easily the most inefficient and aggravating serving staff I've ever had the displeasure of witnessing in action. We arrived starving and dismayed to see a gigantic crowd in the waiting area by the front doors. But why?
I scanned the restaurant and saw that there were at least 5 empty tables, but all of them either completely uncleaned, half-cleaned, or even worse, completely set and ready for the next customer. Frustratingly ready.
The maitre'd was flitting about doing one thing or another, sometimes washing things, sometimes passing by a table and grabbing a cup or teapot, but never doing her actual job: seating customers.
The rest of the actual bussing/wait staff would collectively clean/setup a table all at the same time, neglecting the rest of the restaurant as they moved at snail's pace. Coming from certain cheaper and higher quality dim sum restaurants in Toronto, this service was just abysmal.
Thankfully, after finally being seated, the service was much quicker and we were able to grab food off passing carts. Nothing stood out afterwards about their service, negative or positive.
The food itself was decent. The mini-peking duck rolls were fun but some of the classics like the hargow were less than fresh.
Definitely on the pricier side of dim sum, I guess due to its financial district location. I only gave it $$ but people who know real dim sum know that that's expensive. It's not a price I would willingly pay again for this experience. -
Review from Wendy P.
You can always count on a quick lunch for a large party when you head for dim sum with cart service. With food that's already making its way out of the kitchen, all you've got to do is point out the items that look good to you and you're on your way!
A table of 8 of us ploughed through I don't know how many dishes of veggies, dumplings, rice, turnips and other foods I don't know the name of. But we ate to our hearts content and I've gotta say, the dim sum was as good as any I've had back home (is that saying much for a white girl from Canada?). -

I really liked this place because most dim sum restaurants only serve dim sum in the morning, but here they do dim sum the whole time they are open.
We were seated right away on a Saturday afternoon. We were right by the kitchen, which was great for us because we got the first picks of whatever came out! The portions were normal for a dim sum place. Pricing was about par with other dim sum places I have been to. I would definitely come back here again if we are near that area in the City.Listed in: I love food!

This one's gonna be short. Went for a quick bite before heading out to the airport. Ordered various dim sum from this cute little restaurant located on the edge of Chinatown.
I love it when the little carts come around. Overall, cute place with friendly staff. Don't get me wrong, the dim sum was good, but I must admit that I have had better in Los Angeles.
I would definitely go back when I have more time and can order more items off the menu. -

4.5 stars if I may!
My friends told me about this place for years, but for some reason, I kept going to the same dim sum place in Chinatown because it was comfortable and I knew it was pretty decent. Well, color me converted to being a City View Restaurant dim sum fan!
On the weekends when it's quiet in the Financial District, this place seems tucked away, but inside, it is bustling with people! Luckily, we got a table pretty quickly right next to the kitchen, which was cool so I could get a quick first look at what was coming next on those carts! :)
It all looked so good, but for our first visit at this restaurant, we tried: flat noodles with beef (yum, great taste!), fried calamari (tasty, salty, loved the spicy vegetables mixed in underneath), Chinese greens with oyster sauce (always need some vegetables, it hit the spot), scallop and shrimp dumplings (loved how these were twisted and contorted with tiny peas and carrots to decorate), shrimp dumplings (loooooved it with water chestnuts, what a great combo!!), kung pao style chicken (ooo, this was a *hit* with us, definitely something to re-order again and again), all with some light, lovely jasmine tea.
Oooo, yes, we are definitely fans of this place - can't wait to come back! My belly was full, but I saw other dim sum that I would like to try next time: chive and shrimp dumplings, egg rolls, diced chicken and lettuce cups. So much good stuff and not enough room in my tummy!!
Their prices are a little higher than my normal go-to dim sum place, but I think the dim sum quality and taste plus friendly, nice service is worth the slightly higher price *any* day!!Listed in: San Francisco Rocks, My SF 'Hood

Picture #1: "I don't know what this is called but it was AWESOME." I CONCUR!
Everyone knows there's only two places in the U.S. to get bangin' Chinese food: New York & San Francisco! So I was jazzed to take a trip on the bus down to Chinatown on my recent Cali trip to have some San Fran dim sum, and it did not disappoint!
For some reason, despite all the time I've spent in New York and its REAL Chinatown, Flushing Queens, I have not been there for dim sum (I am usually there for dinner). But gosh is dim sum fun! No need to wait, everything's there fresh, you don't know what it's called and you end up eating like a champ.
I read some alarming reviews about how expensive this place is and I did not find it to be so. Apparently, some people have some trouble saying no! My dining partner and I chose about 2/5 of what was offered and 3/5 we refused, and our bill came to $35 for two people. Yeah, a little pricey for lunch, but for the quality of the food, it was great.
That noodly thing up at the top was great, as were the sesame balls, shrimp dumplings, and roasted pork buns. My only sad part (more my fault than anyone else's), we were there a little late so they ended cart service and our last two dim sum requests had to be made off the menu.
Overall, I am impressed with your Chinese food SF! Love your East-side/used to be Midwest-side Chinese food fanatique, Jon. -

Dimsum just doesn't exist in my hometown, with the lack of Chinese immigrants. I couldn't understand a word the waitresses said, but everything was delicious none-the-less. This is my kind of dining: grab whatever looks good at the time until you can't eat anymore. I will always crave these sweet and savory pockets of deliciousness.
