My dog doesn't get groomed very often, so I imagine he was a rather difficult case. Margaret handled everything beautifully and made my dog look great, despite the fact that he didn't make it easy for her.
Margaret doesn't have a receptionist, so all communications are directly with her, which is great. When I came in, she talked to me about what I wanted her to do. She then took my dog to the grooming room and let him watch the (calm) dogs getting groomed so that he would know that everything would be okay. And when I came back, he was sitting out front with her, and he looked and smelled wonderful! -

My roommate and I took our 1 year-old morkie to City Paws this past Friday. We knew our puppy had a few rough spots since she rolls around a lot and has thin fur, so a shorter cut was necessary. We dropped her off at 11am, were told she would be done by 1pm, but received a call at noon that she was done. When we picked her up, the haircut was uneven and the face was left much longer than the rest of the body. There were a few long spots on one leg, while the other was much shorter. It definitely looked like a rush job; the lady said she likes to "get the dogs in and out" so maybe she needs to slow it down a bit.
On a good note, our dog's fur is extremely soft and she was happy after the haircut; she usually runs out of the back and piddles a little on the floor, but this time she held it together. We may try this place again and let them know about our first cut there. For now, 2 stars is all City Paws gets. -

Margaret is truly the best! I take Moses and Ruthie for all their grooming needs! Margaret is so gentle ..Ruthie looks forward to her visits!
I will never go anywhere else! Easy to park and Margaret always gets us an appointment! I feel so at ease knowing my babies are not kenneled until pick up...so many horror stories about some local competitors. The fact the salon is so clean and smells wonderful is just a bonus on top of the Fabulous grooming! -

I have been taking my Pomeranian here for a year now. Each time the experience improves. He is NOT into getting his hair done. He is a super mellow little doggie until I get a brush anywhere near him. I was really worried the first few times I brought him to the groomer, but every time I get him back, he is fluffy and soft and smells really good.
The only reason it is not a full 5 stars is only due to the inconsistency in the haircut/wash. I am sure how busy they are, how well my dog behaves, etc are all factors in this, so I don't really blame her. I just never know for sure what I am getting.
He is always super clean and fluffy and smells good after, but his haircut has never been the same any time I've brought him! (Which really isn't a big deal as he really only gets a trim)
I would recommend them, but I must warn you to book in advance if you want a weekend!! They do tend to fill up fast! -

Hahahaha!
I went in today to 'discuss' my issues with my dog's horrible grooming, and she walked up with a wad of money, asked me what she'd charged me, handed it back, and said "I suggest you find another groomer in the future"
AHAHAHAHAHA!
Yeah, because I was really planning on making another appointment after you half-mauled my dog's hair and hung up on me when I called to talk to you about it.
Right.
My normally-people-oriented dog wasn't making any attempts to get anywhere near her, either. Something that concerns me, honestly, because usually he practically shits himself trying to say hello to familiar people.
I had to call her yesterday to reschedule our 'meeting' because of complications with my schedule and she hung up on me -again-.
Horrible grooming, poor customer service, and just- a shitty attitude. Damn.
Like, besides all the annoying walking to and from 15th I've had to do, this has been comical.
Whatevs. She can act like it's my fault that she didn't do her job all she wants. Her place (both times I've been in I've been treated to wailing/distressed dogs), her customer service, and my dog's haircut still suck (photos uploaded are supposed to be of 'full body sheared short with traditional schnauzer head and the tail left long).
I also find it fishy that there's a review made by a Yelper that hasn't reviewed anything else that 'can't imagine anyone could complain about this place' right after I updated my review (the review has since been removed).

Making fake accounts and leaving reviews to try to protect your business' image is ultra-classy.
Maybe you could just try not being incompetent and rude.
Come on, "kind to all animals"? At least try not to make it sound fake.
She also over-perfumes dogs. They have a very sensitive sense of smell, something she obviously doesn't understand when she douses them in fragranced products.
We have since found Dogfather, which offers better grooming, better animal-handling (understanding of behavior, and dealing with wiggliness, which she would not. she left his ears ungroomed because he pulls away), included nail-trim, clear communication, and wonderful, polite service for about $15 less for our dog. Our dog was happy to be left at Dogfather on the first visit, and I highly recommend Kevin as an alternative to the poor service here.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Myer M.
Seattle, WA
I took my 5 lbs maltese here after reading such great reviews. The groomer is nice, clean store, and my dog was done at the time she said he would be done. Finding parking there isn't the easiest, but that's not why I'm giving it 2 stars.
For being such a dog-friendly state, I would imagine that the groomers here would be impeccable. But, sadly, my pup came back looking uneven, his beautiful face was lopsided, his ears weren't even cut (I had to ask her to trim it a bit more-come on he's little and when you groom him down to a summer cut, his ears should balance out with the rest of his body). Sadly, he had a rash on his belly with uneven hair spots and he just looked pissed. I would walk him outside and his friends would sniff him and look at him like "wtf happened to you?!" His leasing office friends saw him and said "Wow.. he's not sick is he?" Crap..come on!!! If anyone said that to you and your dog, you really wouldn't consider giving a place another try right?
My husband came home from work and our poor pup ran up to him and the first thing dad cried was "what happened to you?!" Then a barrage of questions came my way, "where did you take him? how much was this? why is it so uneven?! did they just use scissors? where did you find this place?!" Needless to say, that night, our baby sat next to his daddy all. night. He didn't even want to come near me! I became the evil witch lady to took him to the torture room for no apparent reason. Sigh.
I defended the place with the said first paragraph but it's agreed that we won't be bringing our little guy back here anymore. The lady is nice, but I think $50 is a bit much when I've paid $35 in Southern California and $40 in of all places, Nebraska, and our baby has come back looking immaculate. Immaculate. Evenly shaved, smooth nails, ears cleaned (oh yeah his ears were still full of hair! argh!), butt butt cleaned out, and he didn't smell like he was dunked in perfume.
Meh, I'll give her a little more credit in that when she handed over my dog, she reported to me that he "looks to be in good condition- healthy skin, coat, and great temperament." Well, cool, but we all know what condition our dogs are in before we take them to the groomers right? I wish I could LOVE this place, but eh.. I suggest taking your $50 bucks elsewhere.
I wish I would have read @ Lauren P.'s review along with the person who replied to her before I went here. Descriptively, they are on the dot when it comes to the way their dogs ended up looking. However, I will say that the lady was nice. -
Review from Joshua B.
I could have sworn I already wrote a review of this place, but no matter. We only take our dog here to get her nails clipped and ground (with a dremel), but it's always great. We used to take her (our dog) to another salon on Cap Hill, but they have a surly attitude and a ridiculous credit card policy (they basically charge you a 100% markup) - so I tried out City Paws and wasn't disappointed.
It doesn't hurt that I can walk here, and the owner has always been super friendly every time we come in. If our dog had long-enough hair to need trims and shampoos and what-not, we'd definitely take her here too.
Call ahead, as it's not a huge shop and you'll likely need to make an appointment for anything more than a nail trim. Highly recommended. -

Just took our pugsters here for the first time and found it to be incredibly convenient and affordable. I hate the usual drop off by 9 pick up by 5 routine because I prefer not to have my dogs caged for hours at a time and the gal (owner maybe?) let me drop them off and called me as soon as they were done for pick up. Just what I was looking for. We will be back for sure.

I must say I was a bit apprehensive about this place at first. When I called to make the appointment they didn't even take my dog's name or my own. They were able to get her in just a couple of days. If you've lived in the area, you know this is a true rarity. And, when I arrived we were the only ones there!
Margaret definitely proved all of my fears to be unfounded. She finished the entire groom in about an hour and a half. When I picked up my little bitch, she was strutting her stuff, because she knew she looked and smelled like a million bucks! When we got home the all of the neighborhood dogs wanted to sniff her butt, and the neighbors couldn't believe she was the same dog.
I'm just afraid that the word on this place will be getting out, and it will start to go down hill, just like some of the more highly reviewed places on this site. (cough cough Great Dog) -

I've been taking my dog here since I got him a year ago. The reason this place doesn't get five stars is because the service is downright bone chilling. There is no receptionist (at least I've never seen one) so the groomer is the front desk person as well...I think it's a case of under-staffed/over-worked. She's not the friendliest lady I've ever met and she's not one for small talk or pleasantries. She glares at you if your dog's hair is a little more matted than it should be but I keep going back. Why? Because my dog smells amazing!
They have this blueberry vanilla facial scrub they use on the dogs and I cannot explain how amazing this stuff is! After every groom, I spend the next two days just sniffing my dog's face. And the grooming is pretty good, too. I have a miniature schnauzer and I can't complain about any of the haircuts he's gotten here. I certainly don't make it easy for her but my dog always comes out looking pretty good.
As far as the price goes, I've looked around and what she charges seems pretty standard for any other groomer around. -

This place might be fine if you have a fru-fru dog like you see in the picture here. If not, I wouldn't go here. We took our labradoodle to get her first grooming last week. My guess is that this place has no idea how to groom a labradoodle, even though I see them all over the place in Seattle.
The first impression was bad. I walked in and there was no one at the desk, and all I could hear was a dog yelping in discomfort in the background. When the owner did come out, she seem hurried and stressed. My wife and I were hoping we could talk over the haircut, since it was our dog's first visit, and there are lots of different labradoodles with different styles of hair. She didn't seem to pay much attention to our questions, just said it would be about 3 hours, and took our dog to the back before we even discussed how much it would cost. Overall, just a really poor customer experience.
All of that would be forgiveable if she had gotten a decent cut. The hair under her belly was not cut at all, while the hair on top of her back was cut short. Some spots on the sides were cut, and some were left long. She has several mats that were not cut out or taken care of. In short, it was a pretty crappy haircut. The kind that if you got yourself you would be looking for someone to fix ASAP. We were not at all pleased, and will not be going back.
So, I'm not sure why there are so many great reviews of this place. I'd steer clear.Comment from Margaret L. of City Paws 1/30/2010

I brought my pup in for his first haircut today based on the 5 star reviews by all you yelpers and it couldn't have been a better experience. Margaret greeted us as soon as we walked in, inspected my pup, and within minutes, was getting her face licked off by the little guy.
I came back an hour later and there he was, sitting on her lap behind the front desk. He was fluffy, smelled great, and looked like a new pup but with better hair. It was amazing to see his eyes again.
Margaret obviously loves animals and it shows. I can't recommend her enough. -

Really, anyone who gives this place 1 star is just being unfair. At the very least, the place is clean, Margaret is polite, and my dog never comes back with cuts, bald spots, fleas or kennel cough.
I really, really like this place. I have a 5lb yorkie, and it's a shocking amount of money to groom the little guy anywhere in the city. If the price is the same everywhere I go then I might as well take him to a groomer who knows how to do a yorkie cut correctly.
Not to mention, she is FAST- in and out in under 2 hours. It's certainly not a trip to the park, but my dogs tolerates his grooming and I think this is largely due to the fact that it's not a 5 hour process with ten other dogs in an assembly line like other groomers (who charge as much or more).
With that said, I'd give it a 5 star rating if it were a bit cheaper, but this is Seattle, where people overcharge for everything. -

They do a great job on my two Shih Tzu. Always friendly, fairly reasonably priced and just blocks from my house. What could be better?
Plus if you are feeling guilty about leaving the dogs you can go get a Bloody Mary at Smith to help ease your pain. -

Four Stars for City Paws because I am happy but I do not currently have a long enough relationship with them to say they are exceptional. My hunch is that they are a five stars business. Saturday, I took my 7 year old full coat Pomeranian in for grooming. He came home in a reasonable time frame, happy, well groomed and smelling divine.
I love my dog with all my heart. Which is why there is a tremendous trust factor involved when I leave my dog with someone else. I always worry about how he is being treated. But when I picked Ozi up I felt that he had been treated well. He came home happy and beautiful.
My primary concern is that Ozi is safe and well cared for. I found the owner to be very pleasant and concerned with my dog and his care. That is EXACTLY what I want. I want my dog to be treated well and I want the focus to be on my pet. I don't need a receptionist. I don't need small talk. I need someone who is focused on the animals. My impression is that City Paws is doing exactly what I want. They appear to focused on caring for and grooming the pets. -

We took our dog for a nail trim, shortly after moving to Seattle. Having his nails trimmed is our dog's one and only true "issue"; he hates it, he fights every step of the way. So finding a groomer that knows how to handle him quickly, firmly, and effectively is a high priority. I always let a groomer know how he is, and offer to hold him (he is 60 lbs) and I make it clear if they aren't comfortable with that arrangement, there are no hard feelings, we'll keep looking.
The place is very clean, and the owner was perfectly friendly. We had the aforementioned conversation, and she agreed to dremmel his nails while I held him.
It became quickly apparent that she may know how to cut hair and nails, but she doesn't know very much about dog behavior. I don't expect every groomer to be Cesar Milan, but I do expect them to understand really basic stuff like "don't reinforce the exact opposite thing you want the dog to do". As he struggled, she repeatedly said "good boy" presumably in an effort to sooth him. Unsurprisingly, this did not encourage him to calm down and let her do her thing. I made an effort to point this out to her but was ignored. Eventually, I just decided to sweat it out and get this over with. She finished his nails, and just as I was getting him off the table to go back out front and pay, she--without asking!--sprayed some perfumy, "aromatherapy" nonsense IN HIS FACE. My dog wasn't too thrilled with that, either.
(Seriously, aromatherapy for dogs? Do you have any idea how much more sensitive their olfactory systems are than ours? Perfumy to us is almost certainly OVERWHELMING to them. But I digress.)
In retrospect, I probably should have expressed all of my dissatisfaction then and there, but I really felt I was on the verge of losing my temper, and didn't want to make an already very unpleasant situation for me and my dog worse by doing so. So I simply paid and left. And I am writing this some weeks later to 1) let other dog owners know that this place may be fine if your dog is A-OK with being groomed, but if there are any behavioral issues, you might want to go elsewhere, and 2) provide what I hope is frank, but constructive criticism to the management at City Paws. -

I brought my pup here a few days ago for the first time and I couldn't be happier. He was done in about an hour, and came out looking and smelling amazing and wearing the cutest little bandanna. I felt bad when I left him because he was crying and making me feel guilty, but when I returned to pick him up he was super happy. I didn't think he smelled overly perfumed, but nice and clean. He was shaved short for the summer and his face and ears were also trimmed up nicely. So cute! The cats were really confused with his new look and smell when we got home, but everyone else seems to think he's adorable. I'm very glad I took him to City Paws!

I was really impressed the first few times I came here. It wasn't necessarily for the groom my dogs had but how well she was able to put them at ease. They've become very skittish around groomers due to a bad past groomer we tried in California. Here they don't get quite as scared and seem calmer when I return, for that reason alone I have continued to go back. She has a great doggy bedside manner. Unfortunately, the cuts seem to be no better than something I could do, and the last time when I got home I even took the scissors out to fix the unevenness and give the butt area a cleaner cut.

I LOVE City Paws! I've been taking my dog here for a little over year and have always been extremely happy with the results. My pup can be a little nervous, but she reacts really well to Margaret and her partner when we go in. Of course, she would rather be going back home with me, but she doesn't freak out like she has with some groomers. I also like that it's usually pretty quiet when I go in. They don't have dogs upon dogs just waiting in cages to be groomed - in fact, as far as I know, they don't use cages at all. When I go in, my pup is always behind the front desk waiting for me! I can't say enough good things about City Paws. I'm so glad I found them!

We take our lhaso apso here and we have been very happy with the service. Margaret is VERY friendly, and our little guy doesn't freak out nearly as much as he has at other groomers (he still is a little spastic). She has been great to point out issues that he has had (minor ear infection that we suspected) and even offered to clean his ears again in a few weeks, in-between grooming appointments for free, since we were having to put medication on his ears after her find. She is great!!

I can't say enough good things about City Paws...THEY ARE THE BEST!!! Margret is A-mazing and always does a fabulous job with my Pom. City Paws uses aroma shampoos and my Pup smells great for days after his visit. She also trims his nails at no extra charge and probably the best part is the festive bandana at the end. I use to go to Kristi's but found it ridiculous that they charge the same price for a Pom that they did for my friends Great Dane. I like that Margret can get my dog in at his appointment time instead of having him dropped off at 8AM and ready for pick up at 2PM. She respects my time and always has him in and out within the hour! Don't waste your time any where else...GO TO CITY PAWS!!! Your best friend deserves the best!

Really like this place a lot. I've been taking Pesto there since Margaret opened, and Pesto is not hesitant to go--which tells me a lot. Also, when Pesto sees Margaret in the street, if I am out walking her in the neighborhood, she wags her tail and is very happy to see Margaret. That also tells me a lot. Margaret does a great job keeping Pesto (shiztzu) clean and groomed. Highly recommend!

After a horrible experience at my previous groomer (see my review here on Yelp of Central Bark) I took my Havanese to Margaret at City Paws to get a "repair" groom. She was wonderful - I love that she doesn't have a million dogs in cages waiting to be groomed, and she gives each dog individual attention, at least she did with Sammy. She talked to me to get a thorough understanding of what I wanted, made helpful suggestions, and then made him look so much better. She also showed me how to comb Sammy to keep his matts to a minimum. I'll be taking him there from now on.

YES! Margaret has opened a great grooming facility on Cap Hill. She has been our groomer for a year and we couldn't be more pleased with her new digs. She is an excellent groomer you can trust. Margaret listens and loves your dog like her own! We wouldn't send our Kippu to anyone else!

Margaret has been patient and gentle with my pair of wiggly, energetic yorkie puppies for two appointments now, and they have twice come out looking absolutely adorable. She talks to them, feeds them treats and makes sure they have a good, positive grooming experience... And people stop me on the street to ask where they get groomed! You can watch her grooming your dog through a window from the lobby, but after the first time you won't need to anymore - you'll trust that she takes great care of her canine clients.
