Like another reviewer, we had mixed experiences with City Paws.
Dr. Greenburg is super nice, but got us to do really expensive, invasive tests on our cat.  She diagnosed him with allergies but had no interest in trying to find out what he was actually allergic to. She said it was too difficult to pinpoint. She did a painful, $500 biopsy on our cat to confirm her diagnosis that he needed steroid shots monthly for the rest of his life. Well, several months later without the steroid shots that he supposedly needed to get better, he's gotten better all on his own. Who knows what the condition really was, I just wish she had been open to other options before our cat went through all that and we spent all that money. I also noticed that the first time we were there they shamed us into buying cat toothpaste and toothbrushes. I mean really, who brushes their cats teeth???

I really love Dr. Knight. She is wonderful. But we've since been paired with Dr. Greenburg. She loves the dogs, but she's a bit alarmist and pushes lots of expensive "precautionary" lab work, procedures, and products for our normal, healthy dogs. She seems set on trying to find something wrong with them and jumps to worst case scenarios. (We just came in for vaccination updates!) Perhaps she is just a young vet and with time and experience will calm down?

Tip: New Washington Humane Society alums get a complimentary first visit.

Our City Paws vet, Dr. Dan Teich, also works for WHS, and had actually examined (and neutered) Dewey in his shelter days.  They acted like old pals. The vet would even turn on a snarky cat voice e.g. "Whatcha think you're doing, Lady?" when I tried to hold Dewey still.  Amusing.

But seriously, Dr. Teich's exam was remarkably pleasant: he pet Dewey a lot, and let him explore the room instead of confining him to the exam table.  The vet's laidback demeanor relaxed Dewey so much that he didn't even notice the sharp vaccination needle.

We got a nice certificate proclaiming Dewey "free of all disease." Huzzah.

Really great experience -- I just got my first D.C. dog and was nervous about picking a vet. I picked City Paws mostly because of proximity but also because it had been recommended by friends. A very friendly person answered the phone and set me up promptly for an appointment and, upon request, gave me a breakdown of everything I would potentially be paying for on the first visit. The vet tech and vet answered all of my questions and were sweet to my puppy. The staff overall seemed to go out of their way to make me and my pup feel welcome and comfortable. Just got a follow-up letter thanking me for my business.

A great friendly place with really nice vets and techs. The prices seemed high to me in comparison to what I was used to from my very low-tech, low-key vet in Sacramento, but this is a practice, and in a more expensive city.  Still, the vet, Dr. Fischer, carefully explained the procedures necessary for removing a suspicious mole. I received a detailed estimate.  When the operation was scheduled for the day before Thanksgiving, the office put me on a "wait list" and called with other times when the doctor was suddenly available.  All was well with my dog and he didn't mind going back in to have the stitches removed at all.

First of all: I have loved both vets I have seen at this place. They both have been attentive, kind, highly competent and warm.

However, like another reviewer, the customer service here is abyssmal. I have never called this place without being put on hold, and the front desk is a chaotic nightmare every time I come to this place--and considering the cost of veterinary care, I consider this unacceptable. My bad experiences at City Paws are not one-time events; they are perpetual and highly frustrating. Because one of my dogs has a serious illness, I have to come here quite frequently, and I always dread it the customer "service" experience. I have yet to meet a front desk person who is not either incompetent, overly rude or both.

Again, the vets themselves are great and the technicians seem to be pretty great too, but a veterinary practice should hold its standards higher than this. This place, sadly, is another DC disappointment.

So I wanted to take one star off because they stock Eukanuba and Science Diet - two pet foods that are simply loaded with wheat, corn, and animal by-products.  Even the treats here are made out of wheat!  But I just couldn't do it, because the rest of my experience here made up for the poor taste in food.  But don't buy your pet food here!

Ahem, stepping off of my high horse . . . I brought my pup here today to have his nose checked out (he was bitten by another dog).  Everyone - from the phone staff to the women at check-in to the techs to the vet herself - was absolutely amazingly friendly.  They put up with the antics of my nutty lab, and took the time to really get to know my dog and I.  The vet was incredibly patient with my pup, and with all of my overprotective mom questions.  They got us in and out quickly, but with lots of attention.  The clinic itself is clean and really well decorated (especially considering it is a vet office!).

Murphy just jumped up on my lap to chime in, all 70 pounds of him.  He had a great time at the vet today, and says he will definitely be back, dragging me along.

Great people and attention to the kitties here.  One of the vet techs (Mathias? not sure) was simply ga-ga over our kittehs, Miguela and Fausto.  Dr. Wendy Knight was very thorough and professional and kind, not harried or hurried like most "professionals" in DC.  Doralee, who is a vet tech there, has a pet sitting service, Mindful Petsitters, and she is really great.  It is nice to have someone who is a trained vet tech be your pet sitter, no?

Be aware: they are closed on Wednesdays :-(
