Get a an idea of the natural splendor of New Orleans without having to get to far from the safety of the bars in the French Quarter.
Bike or drive up Esplanade Avenue, home of the grand old Creole Mansions of New Orleans and you end up here, right at the New Orleans Museum of Art. There are botanical gardens, ducks, swans,, the grandest collection of live oaks in the world, and a children's amusement park , complete with rickety roller coaster open on weekends.
The new bike path makes this one of the finer rides in the city, and you can take the park all the way out to Lake Ponchartrain to enjoy that view, too.
Stop by McHardy's on Broad for some fried chicken along the way, and eat it out under the most beautiful trees in the city.
Under appreciated is an understatement for this park, you'll have most of the place to yourself. Take advantage of this on a sunny day, there is no place like it in New Orleans.
One of the best parks in America! It's so gorgeous with it's Oaks laden in Spanish Moss, plethora of fountains and bodies of water. They held the Voodoo Fest here, but we just wanted to walk around the park the whole time.
Next time I plan to spend a day just enjoying the natural setting.
Large, beautiful park with many aspects from large stand of Oak trees, to plants and flowers, art, small train. Much to do, even get married here.

This park is fabulous! Rivers, lakes, grass, trees, gardens, trails, stadiums, picnic areas. It has it all. Where else can you throw a birthday party in a neo-classical columnar structure? It is massive in scale and possibilities. It is so big, it seems rather underutilized, but I would kill to have such a park in my city. The live oaks and cedar/cypress(?) are gorgeous and old.

I think City Park is a perfect family outing. For years I really only experienced it during Celebration in the Oaks and on occasion visit to Storyland and/or the amusement park, but in addition to that they also offer playgrounds, great picnicking under the oaks, the botanical gardens and their sunset Sunday concerts and my favorite new discovery, the Arboretum Trail (a 2.5 mile loop around the Couturie Forest).
I never think to o to city park, but whenever I end up here I always feel very happy. Maybe its the greek styled pavillions, maybe its the WPA/Deco bridges and benches. Maybe it is just the reasons I end up there, but in any case, city park is great.

Often overlooked, like the bigger, clumsy, unkempt sister of Audubon Park, City Park is going through some exciting, albeit slow, changes and will one day outshine that Uptown princess. The bike path is making its way around the perimeter one chunk of smooth, lovely sidewalk at a time. The new exercise track was the centerpiece of Voodoo Music Experience and a fine place to try out your new jogging sneaks. One of the 2 golf courses has re-opened, and NOMA as well as the tennis courts and Storyland continue to draw crowds of families and field trips every day of the week. I love coming to read or hula hoop or walk my dog under the moss draped oaks of City Park. It is one of my favorite places and I just hope the rest of the city sees what a treasure we have in so much gorgeous green space.

What a fantastic place! Mature Oak trees with Spanish Moss dripping off, an amusement park with historic carousel for the kids (and Storybook Land for the 6 and under set), an art museum, a train that runs around the perimeter--wow! The park got hit hard by Katrina, but you can hardly tell now, given all of the mature trees and great landscaping. Don't miss it--check out their website for all of the different things to do.
I love City Park. I live very close to it, and drive through it at least once a day. It makes me so happy to this beautiful land, and the trees, ducks, and the walkers and bikers. It is very accessable, and a must see for anyone that has not been there yet, even if just to walk around.
City Park is the most beautiful place in New Orleans and is one of my favorite places in the WORLD. When I'm in the area I always drive through the park plus we go there as often as we can to play on the swings, look at the ducks and swans, and walk around. Storyland has been renovated (in fact they are still working on it) and it looks better than I remember in 35 years. It is the best place to take kids where they can walk inside of Pinnochio's whale, climb Ole King Cole's castle and "ride" inside Cinderella's pumpkin carriage. The amusement park has the carousel and the ladybug roller coaster that is perfect for 5 year old thrill seekers. You also have to take the train around the park and then check out the little miniature train garden that is a model of New Orleans made from bark, moss, leaves, etc. The best time to go is- anytime, but of course when the weather is nice and for Celebration in the Oaks when the whole thing is lit up and there is music and Christmas trees and Yuletide fun (and a cheesy but fun presentation of the Cajun Night Before Christmas in lights.) Also, this is the perfect place to have a wedding (we did, in the rose garden.) There is a large pavillion now for weddings and receptions and it is so elegant (and you don't have to dance on bricks.)
