THANK YOU YELP!!! I got two free tix to watch the Santaland Diaries last week and I can't thank you enough!

We had a BLAST!!! We went, not knowing what to expect and we were totally blown away by the performance!

Santaland Diaries is a LIVE musical theatrical performance. As we were seated and waited for the show to start, the three pretty ladies (actors) sang us some Christmas songs! There were moments when they invited the audience to join them singing too. It was very interactive and made it even more fun!

The theater was actually bigger than a couple others that I've been to. As you entered the building, they sell some wine and there were FREE warm cyders and Xmas candy for your enjoyment. They even gave away free cookies after the show too and allowed you to interact with the casts after the show.

It was a well done performance and oh, not forget to mention that the seats were very comfie with nice cozy cushion :)

Parking is $5 right across the street but I found a free street parking a block down.

I look forward to watching more shows at the City Lights Theater Company :)

Can't complain about free YELP ELITE shows!

This was our first yelp elite event and I have to say, keep it coming! The theater is a quaint, small establishment, albeit in a sketch neighborhood, very intimate and provides great views from any seat. I love being able to see the intricate expressions of the cast and be fully enveloped in the emotion and experience of the production.

The show was: Santaland Diaries and it was awesome! HILARIOUS and laugh out loud funny I must of spit on the guy in front of me a couple times from laughter. (Sorry bro)

The actor was spot on and I was amazed at how he could remember all his lines so well. The three female singers/dancers/actors were stupendous with their random songs and dances and the comedic timing was spot on throughout the whole show.

    Bravo!

Back at City Lights thanks to Yelp! This time to enjoy the Santaland Diaries.  Hilarious! I didn't even notice or needed an intermission. There was none. You don't need one.

It was a relatively short monologue that covers the gamut of almost every topic under the sun. Everyday stuff that you and I talk about and laugh about. It's awesome!

I enjoyed the experience and loved my front and center  seating. I really do enjoy the intimate experience this theater provides.

They do sell reasonably priced bottled water, soda, wine and coffee now. They also provided viewers with free munchies before the show started that night. Once inside-it's comfortably warm.

Overall City Lights have improved so much. Awesome job!

Small, local theatre company.  The stage is extremely intimate.  You're right up next to the actors in the small performance space.  I went and saw The Santaland Diaries on comp ticket from Yelp (thanks!).  The show was pretty hilarious.  There was no intermission, which I found refreshing since that sort of just eats up time.  Over the hour and a half, I watched 4 actors do an entire production.  It was very well done.  At the end of the show (**SPOILER ALERT**), they invite you up on stage to hang out and serve you cookies.  It's quite fun.

The bathrooms are small, so expect to wait in line.  Overall, I had a fun time at the show and enjoyed my visit to City Lights Theatre Company.

I am a new fan to live theater! The venue is small and cozy and they offer a variety of beverages including wine. The seating arrangement is a typical three aisle layout with comfortable chairs and adequate leg room.

The Santaland Diaries performance last weekend was such a treat. I was entertained from start to end, especially during the singing parts! I recommend catching this performance before the year ends. You will not be disappointed.

One of the highlights of the holiday season was seeing Santaland Diaries at City Lights -- such an intimate venue that sells out quickly. The performance was hysterical. All the actors sang and delivered their parts perfectly. The staff were so welcoming with greetings, free apple cider, and holiday candy. Even the gentleman manning the $5 private parking lot was incredibly kind. After the show, the audience could mingle with the cast and enjoy some more sweets. It's the kind of place you want to support with your patronage and non-profit donations. Keep the theater alive.

Last night was opening night for City Lights production of August Osage County. Just when I think City Lights has raised the bar to the highest level, they raise it higher. August Osage County is a wonderful emotional rollercoaster ride! Tracy Letts play is so well written. It is a long show, but with the skillful and smart direction by Virginia Drake the time flies as does the pace of the show.

I need to be up front and tell you I know a lot of the cast. A wonderful thing happened right from the start, during Michael West's monolouge, I forgot these were my friends! They pulled me into the story right from the start!
That is a tough thing to do, but their  work is so compelling I fell right into it.
Each and every cast member brings their A game to this show. No one cast member stood out, they all stood out and did justice to Virginia Drakes direction ( which took a lot of trust ) and to Tracy Letts words.

The Weston family is one jacked up family. Hell, mine seems close to normal after seeing the show. Even though they are emotionaly twisted, I am sure you will find at least one character that is someone in your family!

This is the type of show I will see a few times because it runs deep  it does not do it justice to take all of it in with just one viewing.
It is just that rich !

I don't want to give anything away plot wise, because this show is worth you experiencing. Dark? yes!  Funny? Oh hell yes, my stomach hurt ! Touching, yeah I cried!

This is what theater should be. It should touch you on many emotional levels that this show delivers in a big way !

I have been a season ticket holder at City Lights Theater Company for 5 or 6 years now and I must say, I was wondering how they were going to top last season.  August: Osage County was just the ticket.  Wow!

Prior to having the tickets to CLTC, I sat through two seasons of "yawn" at the San Jose Rep.  There was nothing special, or edgy about all the productions except for one.  I don't have to worry about that with City Lights.  Each season has been a delight.

I can't wait to see CLTC's production of The Santaland Diaries.  Each show they impress me with how much they can do in a small theater, with a limited budget (at least on most plays).

I love that there aren't assigned seats, so that if another friend wants to join us at the show at the last minute, they can sit with us.  Oh, also it is great that there are beverages, including beer and wine) and snacks for sale in the lobby that are allowed *in* the theater.

Really, this place is a true jem.

Welcome to another "Dear Archie G." review.

    Dear Archie G.,

San Jose sucks. This is such a boring city. I moved here a couple of years ago and it seems as if there is nothing to do in this damn town. Can you please give me some tips before start experimenting with crystal meth?

    -Sleep Walking in San Jose

    Dear Sleep Walking,

Living in San Jose is like anything else in life. It's what you make of it.

If you are having trouble finding stuff to do in the 10th biggest city in the nation, then maybe you need to stop blaming San Jose and start holding yourself accountable for your boredom. Maybe you are a boring, miserable person. But if you feel you aren't want something fun to do in (downtown) San Jose, I highly suggest you check out the "The City Lights Theater."

Earlier this year, thanks to complimentary tickets from Connie C., I came here with La Novia for "Frank Langella's Cyrano de Bergerac." How could I pass up a chance to see a play about a guy with big nose that is good with words? It just hits so close to home.

I am not a theater guy at all. Most of the time, I feel bored or annoyed when watching live performances. It just reminds of weird, geeky theater kids in high school. But I thoroughly enjoyed the show here. It differed greatly from my past experiences with plays and musicals because it was such a small venue that I truly felt immersed in that particular world.

During the summer, I returned here to watch the acclaimed musical, "Rent." I had seen it before live in a large theater and had been less than impressed. But at City Lights Theater, it was a different experience. I was right in the center of the action. The actors were right in front of me. I could see the smiles. I could see the tears. I could hear the powerful singing voices of the actors (and they gave me chills during certain songs). I was very impressed by fellow Yelper, Jeannette Z. and her awesome acting and singing. Big props to her (and the rest of the awesome cast).

The live band for "Rent" took this show to the next level. They played music that made me feel emotions I hadn't felt before. This intimate version of "Rent" made me smile and even shed a tear or two. Don't call me a crybaby. Something got into my contacts. No really, I swear.

In the fall, I returned for the opening night of their new season and watched "First Day of School." By now, the place had been remodeled a bit and it looked great. They even displayed local artwork on the walls. And the staff was awesome as ever.

As for the show itself, it was an intimate performance with a small cast that had me laughing like crazy. I became so immersed in that imaginary world that I forgot about the rest of the stuff I was stressing on in life. I truly lost myself in this comedy and most importantly, had a great time. And well, you can too.

The City Lights Theater is easily my preferred venue for watching live performances. Every seat is a great seat. It's not fancy or anything, but it's a small, intimate venue that provides a larger than life, intimate experience.

Try it at least once. If you hate it, then you are more than welcome to experiment with crystal meth.

I came here to watch the recent production of Equus. It was my first time here so I really did not know what to expect. I've been to small theaters before and really enjoyed the intimacy of the small theater setting, so I was looking forward to watching Equus at City Lights.

The front staff is very friendly, all smiles and cheer. There is a small concession stand with candy, cookies and drinks which you can take in the theater. The theater is laid out well with any seat being a great seat.

Now onto the play Equus. In short, it was an amazing and awe inspiring production. The cast was excellent, showing raw emotion and vitality and the 2.5 hours went by FAST. As an audience member, I really got into the play and the drama behind it.

I'm definitely looking forward to coming back for more stage drama and acts.

Love love love this theatre. Support local art please! I've been able to come here twice for yelp elite event for "Rent" and for "Compleat Female Stage Beauty". I love the intimate atmosphere and love the fact that I don't have to wear glasses to see the stage. I definitely would consider paying for shows here as well if I had more time. They always support a local project at every show. Problem here would be parking---park at the nearby funeral home and walk!

Another side note: for the Compleat Female Stage Beauty elite event, the community manager "dropped the ball" said the lady at the front desk. They said the tickets never got reserved for Yelp Elites and were sending us away. Good thing they caught us before we walked out the door to let us know that there were empty seats. This has nothing to do with the theatre itself, but I have to say that this was the first time I felt really disappointed with Yelp. Well actually, I take it back---the second. I never received my free lunch box for being an elite!!!

    I love community theater!

So happy that I've been able to receive complimentary tickets courtesy of Miss Connie and Miss Abby of Yelp. I've been able to experience a variety of stage performances that have entertained me and provoked much thought afterward.

The venue is small and intimate allowing the audience to become engaged with the performance. Each seat has its own unique perspective of the stage - there is no bad seat in the house.

The City Lights Theater Company is one of downtown San Jose's gems.

Last Thursday, my girlfriends and I went to see Compleat Female Stage Beauty.  This is the 2nd play produced by City Lights that I came to watch.  The first one was First Day of School which I did not really like.  i didn't "dig" the humor.  But Compleat Female Stage Beauty rocked the center of my universe.  I loved it!  Granted,  I do have a fascination for the Shakespeare and that era but aside from that, the cast were incredibly talented, the costumes were extravagantly beautiful and I I fell in love with the script - the words, the humor, oh I can't rave enough about it.  If you haven't seen it yet, you have to go!  Gorrebeeck and Winslow became my two favorites although the entire cast were brilliant too.  It has been 4 days since I saw the play but the memory of it is still alive.  Remembering the show brings a smile to my face:))

I also like the fact that the theater is small and the setting very intimate.  It really puts me right in the middle of the characters.   I makes me feel like they are performing just for me (dream on, I know!).  Aside from that, we were able to actually meet the cast after the show and we didn't have to compete with anybody else.  The only downside is that it's in the area of San Jose where it's not very safe so finding a safe parking is tough.  The last time I saw a play here, my friend's car got broken into parking along 2nd street.   Just be careful about where you park.

What a treat it was to see RENT at City Lights! It was the first time I had been back to this intimate theater since their remodel. LOVE the new plush seats with cup holders for your beer or wine, and thank you for putting in A/C!

Their open seating allowed us to get the best seats in the house - front row of center stage. But really, every seat is great because the playhouse is very small with stadium seating. It makes for a super engaging experience.

The show was incredible, and it was especially awesome to see fellow Elite yelper Jeannette Z in the fabulous ensemble and friend Megan give a heart wrenching performance of Mimi. I would highly recommend seeing it before it ends on August 29th. Support local theater!

**INTIMATE AND LOCAL THEATER WITH LOTS OF FLAIR**

Thanks to Yelp, we were able to watch RENT at this lovely venue.

The staff were all smiles, handing out brochures and get this . . . OPEN SEATING!

We scored front row middle seats, too.

The audience was gently informed to ENJOY the show and participated in a *TURN YOUR CELL PHONE OFF* ceremony before the show began.

The new reclining plush seats were fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed its comfort.

Not a big theater, so very intimate. I liked that.

You can even buy beer or wine during intermission.

The actors of RENT greeted us at the entrance as we departed. Pretty cool.

    Only con, finding parking.

    HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

THIS HUGE PORTION OF MY REVIEW IS ON THE LATEST PRODUCTION:  RENT
We went Saturday, July 24, 2010

I am not a "Rent-Head", I have never seen Rent before.  I had a vague idea of what it was about--people living in a building and not paying rent and they were affected by Aids.  So the story doesn't get reviewed here except to say that Lisa Mallette (the director of this production) did a great job in reworking it so that non-Rent-Heads would understand the story just fine.  Each actor we talked to gushed on and on about how Lisa is awesome at making them feel comfortable and how she did a great job of adapting it.  So "Yay! Lisa." Since the first time I visited City Lights Theater Company it captured my heart.  You did a FANTABULOUS job with Rent.  Thank you!

This play proved to me what I have always suspected ---- Angels walk among us.  If I was confident that just that sentence would get you to the theater I would leave it there for you to see for yourself, but I know you are suspect of my proclamation, but it is true.

From the MOMENT Brian Palac (Roger) opened his mouth I was enthralled.  I could not believe such a voice could be on a stage in our little San Jose Theater.  Wow!  I was amazed.  He did an awesome job.  I feel he had real power to his voice.

Megan Woodroff (Mimi) and Jami James (Tom Collins) were also great.  As the show progressed Megan really belted it out.  As for Jami, he did a unquestionably great job in his role as Angel's boyfriend.

When Adam Berry (Angel) started to sing I said, "Angel." Thinking he was one, not knowing that was the name of his character.  That man was awesome.  He did a great job . . . I kind of think that role was not too much of a stretch for him because he just did it sooooo perfectly.  I have to admit I was a little distracted by his shoes.  I mean, seriously, who can WALK in those shoes, much less dance, prance, shake, shimmy, JUMP, and SING.  Holy (insert word!) that man is MIND BOGGLING.

Then there is Nicole C. Julien (Joanne) and Jacqui Elliott (Maureen).  Both fabulous---both adding to the choir of angels.

Matt Bariletti (Benny) did a great job as the "bad" guy.  Hubby and I been fortunate enough to be at the Galas on opening night and I KNOW they are actors on the stage, but I am always a little surprised when I meet them because they are often times so different than their characters and Matt seemed the very opposite of Benny.  Which again points to great acting, right? (Duh, Terre!)

And it was so awesome to see the talent of Jeannette Zelaya (Yay Jeannette!) in so many roles.  She was all over the places including Alexi Darling and Mimi's Mother.  Hopefully it won't be another ten years before we are graced with her presence on the stage.

I am not a word smith and only use words like great and fabulous, wonderful and amazing and they truly fall extremely short of conveying the FANTASIC voices and talent that is in this show.  I am sitting here as I write trying to make plans to go see it again.

A few things that I felt while I was watching this was that the people on the stage had real chemistry among them.  At one point when Nicole (Joanne) and Jacqui (Maureen) were signing I thought, "Dang! They aren't singing to US at all.  They are singing to each other.  They are playing off each other and that is what helps make it so engaging! Yay!" (yes, I do cheer in my head!)

Jami (Tom) and Adam (Angel) were completely connected.  When Angel dies, you have NO DOUBT that Jami's tears are not an act.  He is honestly crying for Angel.

When the cast has its gathering for dinner I laughed because they just really seemed to be having a party.  Singing and dancing and having a great time.  Audience be damned its "La Vie Boheme".

This is a must see.  And for me a must see AGAIN.  I hate that I am not a writer that can have words jump off the page at you and grab your hand and make you pick up the phone to order tickets.  Instead I will just say it outright, "Pick up the phone!  Order tickets!  Go see Rent!"

I did almost attacked Amanda Folena the choreographer for this production (although she wears many hats and does many things) to ask who did such a fabulous job casting this show.  The people that cast this fabulous group deserves kudos too, as does Amanda for all the fabulous moves!

My one tiny annoyance was I felt that the band was too loud in a few spots and they drowned out what the singers were saying.  I want to hear the actors a little bit louder and the band just a tad less.  Oh, did I not mention that there was a band playing?  Geez, that is another thing that helps Rent fly!

I just don't feel I can say enough about this production.  It was so amazing.  I really, really, really (see that? that's called writing skill) hope that you go.  This is the PERFECT way to experience City Lights Theater Company.

I've seen a surprising amount of local theatre in my short time in the Bay Area, and City Lights ranks up there.

There seemed to be something weird going on with will call...all they did was ask me for my name and then said, "go on in!"  Maybe the computer was down?  I scored complimentary tickets so I wasn't really bothered, but if I had shelled out I would want a ticket stub or something.  :)  It was just...a little odd.

The show we saw, "Compleat Female Stage Beauty," is really a great script.  The actors were committed and brought the story vividly to life.  The hints of modernity that made it through the period-piece dressings brought me out of the suspension of disbelief here and there, but not so much that it ruined the story.

I would say the woman who played Hughes was the most memorable for me and the most believable.  She had a subtler part that was very well executed.

The lighting for the show was mostly gorgeous, especially a side-lit Kynaston-as-the-Moor.  There were a couple "we are lighting a stage now" light cues that seemed a bit much, but that's more of a personal taste thing, I think.

Now, after seeing this show (and reading the Mission statement), I'll probably be back here at some point.  However, I would caution those bringing younger audience members to call the box office to discuss the material ahead of time.  I certainly wasn't prepared for the level of "adultness" that was in this performance - I wasn't annoyed or offended, but I didn't realize it was going to be so mature.  Something important to know, I think, if you are introducing young people to local theatre.  Maybe wait until they are a little less young for City Lights  ;)

We attended the opening night of "Equus", and the four of us (all season subscribers) agreed that this is the best production at City Lights so far this season.

Kit Wilder has worked some directorial magic along with an excellent cast. The set is appropriately simple, dark, and haunting. This was my first exposure to "Equus," and one leaves the theater with troubling questions to ponder.

Warning to those not familiar with the play: There is full frontal nudity.

Saw "Back to School" here thanks to complimentary tickets from Yelp Elite. The theater is super small and reminded me of some of the small stages I went to in college. The upside is that it provides for an intimate setting and any seat is pretty much a good seat. The cast was outside as well after the show.

The show wasn't my favorite, but if you're interested in seeing a show and like the storyline, this small theater ain't bad.

    RENT!!

14 actors who were all giving it 110% vocally.  Also, 14 singers who can be paired or grouped in any way shape or form and still sound like a symphony!  The cast selection was AWESOME!

I didn't know the story of Rent and have never seen it prior to this night.  It was as everyone has ever said, a story worth knowing.  I cannot think of any better place to experience it than City Lights either.  The new setup of seats and the newly remodeled bathrooms were both a plus too.  I love my little theater!

I would like to put out a special shout to Terre P and my friend from Yelp, Jeanette, who was one of the cast members.

If you like musicals or you like Rent, you are going to LOVE this performance.  I would not mind seeing this one three or four times just to take in the singing again.  Such a superb job.  Kudos to all who worked behind the scenes to make this happen, and to the band playing the music.  I loved it!

    Small theater? CHECK.
    Budding actors? CHECK.
    Air of Snoot? NOPE.

I love small theaters and the actors affiliated with them. They are taking a chance, doing what they love. To stand on stage and dole out memorized lines  AND to do it with passion? I could never do it...maybe that's why it intrigues me.

I'm not an expert theater-goer by any means. I go to plays mostly to see my big brother perform, which opens my eyes to experiences that I wouldn't have otherwise.

With City Lights Theater, they are warm, friendly, accommodating and make me feel welcome. There is no air of snootiness...like, "I'm an actor, now adore me..."

I will definitely be returning to this theater to watch more shows. And for people who aren't avid theater attendees, but want to try going to more plays...this place is a great place to start.

This place definitely has a small college town theater feel to it. If that's your kind of scene then this place is definitely for you. If you're looking for something a bit more grand, then suspend expectations and judgments.

We went to see Cyrano and were a bit disappointed by the production. The actors really seemed to poor their hearts out but the poor wardrobe selections (nike shirts and sweatpants!?) and the overall poor structure of the venue (I realize they can't do too much about this) really detracted from the performance and an otherwise good storyline.

You definitely get what you pay for and if you're into small venues and productions and don't mind it seeming a bit amateur/high school, then I would recommend finding a show that interests you and trying it out. Otherwise, it's best to skip the productions here.

As a frequent theater-goer, it's easy to get jaded and think that nothing will surprise you.  But every once in a while, a delightful, thought-provoking well-acted presentation arises from the noise.  That's RENT at City Lights.

It was my first time at the venue and I couldn't believe I was sitting just a few feet from the actors on the stage.  Comfy seats. A super-friendly staff. Kind of like sitting in my living room with a couple hundred of my closest friends. Get there at least 30 minutes before showtime because seating is "open" - but I'm not sure there's a bad seat in the house.

The real joy came when the cast of RENT hit the stage.  I've seen the show many times, all around the world, and this rendition was so personal, so well-acted, and told the story so well, I had to bring my friends. THREE more times.

Brian Palac (Roger) captured the audience with his very first note.  He's a beautiful man with beautiful pipes. I couldn't help but think that the others I'd seen in the role were mere actors and Brian WAS Roger.  This guy had a great stage presence, a powerful pitch-perfect delivery and helped raise the energy of an already energy-rich show. He had me at "I'm writing one great song..."

Spencer Williams (Mark) was a bit more predictable.  He carried the role well and he clearly had the acting chops to handle it. Musically, pretty strong, too. He mirrored the other "Marks" I'd seen in appearance and delivery.

And then there's Megan Woodruff (Mimi). Wow. She was the perfect compliment to Brian (Roger) and even though she's petite, she painted the walls of the theater with charisma and passionate vocals.  Gorgeous, Talented. immersed in the role. A joy to watch. She should quit her day job and act.

Adam Berry (Angel) was another sparkle in a very bright cast.  He OWNED the role, captured the character's energy, and blasted it back to the hungry audience with amazingly athletic choreography (in HEELS) and convincingly displaying a range of emotions so well that you're a LOG  if you aren't effected by his final scenes. This is not an easy role and Adam made it look effortless.

Other very notable performances (and there were many) were Jami James (Tom Collins) whose low notes filled the house and squeezed my heart and the very talented Nicole Julien(Joanne) who "mooed" her way into a high-energy frenzy - very well, I might add.   Jacqui Elliot (Maureen) belted out many winners, and did a mean Tango. She played a great Yin to Nicole's Yang. Matt Bariletti (Benny) wore a few hats in the show and blended well and the third time I saw the show his performance was light-years better than the first.  He articulated (he carries much of the knitting in the plot) and seemed more energetic.

I can't help mention the band, too.  They're right on stage and did a very good job of providing the continuity in the show.  Some sound balance and volume problems on 2 of the 4 nights were a little annoying - the band overshadowed short pieces of dialog during critical moments, but the band's  performance was evocative and spot-on. It's a community supported theater - sounds like a good reason to DONATE for a better sound system.

The net? Wonderful venue (I'll go back), terrific performance (I just want to hug 'em all) and a very, very enjoyable FOUR evenings. I'm sorry the run wasn't longer - there are about a hundred other friends I really think would love this production.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing more of the cast.  Their singular and collective talents are just too good to miss.  Thank you City Lights (Lisa, Kit and crew) for a great escape.

Would I notice this place if it wasn't free? No. So thank you Yelp for the two free tickets to see Rent!

The place is located in a rather ghetto area. After 7, the surrounding Vietnamese shops aren't opened so you would have to walk a few blocks down to find something to do.

This theater is rather small, seats 100 people. All the seats have a good viewing of the stage, so that's a good thing. The seats are nice and comfy and is set up nicely so you won't get blocked by someone's head.

For $25-28 a ticket, you can decide whether you would like to support the actors/actresses there and buy a ticket to a show.

Got complimentary tickets (courtesy of Connie C. from Yelp) to see "Second Weekend in September" and it was a decent surprise. It was my first visit to City Lights Theater. I have known about this local theater for a while but never gotten a chance/initiative to watch anything here.

I enjoyed the performance. The story line was simple but it actually delivered. It was a charming love story. The intimate setting of this theater is perfect for this play. You can clearly see and feel the actors.

I will keep this theater under my radar and check out their future performance.

Compliments of Yelp Elite, I received two tickets to "Back to School" on their opening night. The theatre is really intimate-meaning...great seats EVERYWHERE!!! Their seats are very comfortable! I like them better than the ones at the movie theatres!

The play was about a married couple-agreeing it's okay to sleep with other people. I don't want to say more..go SEE it!! it's sooooo FUNNY!! They captivated the audience the entire time! I would definitely come here again for another play. I love the atmosphere!

I never knew about this place till I came her last Friday night. To see the production of Rapunzel.

It is a very cozy and small theater. There is no bad sit in this house. The have a small parking lot but I found parking on the street.

The production was great. It was funny, entertaining, and great voices. The second act was all Holiday songs and it bring all the warm feelings of the season.

It was great at the end to met the cast and they did an wonderful job.  Overall a great production and cozy place to go for an evening of great entertainment.

It was nice to see Noelle, Michael, Vicky, Cindi, Vu, Vivi, Eli, and the all the other Yelpers.

Vu- Thanks for fixing my phone.

Saw RENT here thanks to Connie C. & Yelp. This place is so cute!! It's a small audience, making it much more intimate than those large auditoriums where you can barely see the faces of performers on stage. I thought the cast did an outstanding job, and I especially loved the band! And Angel, of course. The staff is super nice, and the cast is outside for a chat after the show.

Parking SUCKS though, be sure to get there well in advance to find parking. People WILL tow you if you park in shopping plazas. I was lucky to just get a warning.

To complement a wonderful show such as Rent that I saw tonight, nothing is better than a small intimate environment that this theatre provides. The performance had its minor technical difficulties (actually very few and only a person like me would really notice anyway), however that is what makes a live performance even more realistic.

No one should expect it to be completely flawless, and the little things make the audience more captivated and drawn into the actors on stage. This venue is just perfect for that. It's personal, it's intimate, and even got to talk to some of the actors/actresses after the show. Even during intermission I was having a conversation with the drummer about music and the sound. All-in-all an experience I will look forward to doing again.

Because I am seriously coming back a couple more times to watch this production before it ends. Hey Jeannette Z.! I'll be keepin' an eye out for ya!

City Lights is a great little local theater that's welcoming and has a cozy lay-out.  Last night, my friends and I saw Hair, courtesy of Yelp and City Lights generosity - thank-you!!  Though it was over 2 hours long, it was a fun upbeat musical that kept the night alive.  The theater didn't have the best acoustics but the seating was all up close and personal and the set and room allowed for a lot of interaction between the performers and audience.

I would definitely recommend this theater and it's productions to others.

    See ya there!

I've actually watched a total of 3 plays at the CLTC

    1. A Few Good Men

    2. Hair

    3. RAPUNZEL or Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow & Holiday Musical Revue

    The cast for Rapunzel
Jake Van Tuyl (Mr. Barker, Rapunzel's Father)
Jimmy Robertson (Paul Mitchell, Hairy-tale Lawyer)
    Michael Johnson (Piano Player)
    Sarah Giner (Rapunzel)
    Isaac Benelli (Prince Harry Sauve)
Melissa Markwart Deveaux (Pantena Prell, the witch)
    Danelle Medeiros (Goldilocks Garnier)
Samantha Bartholomew (Mrs. Barker, Rapunzel's Mother)

As I've stated in previous reviews there is no horrible seat in this theater. Its a cozy theater. The plays I've seen here have been excellent. Tonight's show was a musical that was delightful and entertaining. Jimmy Robertson who played Paul Mitchell, Hairy-tale Lawyer was amazing- his energy, enthusiasm, great singing and acting had me laughing almost to the point of tears! Jimmy Robertson's solo in the holiday portion was beautiful which then led into Sarah Giner's holiday solo which was beautifully sung. Overall, the cast did a great job. Kudos to the writers Marian Partee and Eric Hoit and director Amanda Folena. The combination of the writing, directing and acting made for a wonderful theater experience.

I normally catch a few shows a year most- at the San Jose Center for Performing Arts (I last saw Beauty and the Beast) and Repertory Theatre (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). Had it not been for Yelp I would have not known about the City Lights Theater because its a much smaller theater. Its truly one of my great finds on Yelp =) Tonight was a good turnout of Yelpers. Thanks, to our SV Community Manager Connie C. for highlighting this wonderful local theater.

    Noelle's Notes
A great choice for local theater!

I hate TV. And movies. Well, not really, but it seems like people are so used to getting filmed storytelling that the pastime of going to the theater has fallen away. I'm not entirely innocent as well; I haven't been to the theater since I was in High School and it never occurred to me, until last night, what I have been missing.

Yelp was gracious enough to provide tickets (I would spend all day and night holed up in my studio with no physical interaction with anyone at all without them, it seems). My friend and I parked closer to downtown rather than near the theater to get dinner together, which worked out rather well since the walk to and from the theater wasn't that bad (it's only a few blocks from the main downtown area).

The play, Stop Kiss, is very intriguing - sad, hopeful, romantic, and happy at different parts of the play. The actors, a very small cast, played their parts convincingly and well.

The theater -was- hot and I was disappointed, upon getting my glass of white wine, that it wasn't chilled. People in the audience were fanning themselves with their programs, slightly distracting when trying to see the play.

I've made a promise to myself to see more plays here, and other local theater companies in the Bay Area. Get off the couch and off the TV, and support theater!

True the venue is intimate, around 100 seats so all seats are good.  Went to a 7pm showing of Rapunzel, Hair today, gone tomorrow and holiday musical review.

The first part of the musical was the play, more on the slapstick side, around 45 minutes, then a 15 minute break then vaudvilly/showtunes.  It was fun and entertaining, some singers were stronger then others but it was still fun.  One of my fave songs was when they played their pianos in Carol of the Bells in their second act, too funny.

Fast foodie type eateries around 2.5 blocks away on San Carlos.  Pizza my heart, http://www.yelp.com/bi...  Mc D, a cheesecake place, a boba drink place...etc..

Two restrooms, free coffee and tea and wine and snacks you can buy.  Street parking, there is a lot to park around a block away.

This theatre experience finally makes me understand why people love theatre. I am now addicted and plan on going to the rest of the shows in their season. The Acting was amazing!!!!!!

I had been to all the hits growing up (phantom of the opera, etc.) and I have even been to broadway. I had always felt disconnected from this art form. Until Now.

I just saw Angels in America at this small inviting theatre and it was the most proffesional, moving performance I have ever seen.
The acting is the best I have seen (including film).

What a wondeful experience. We arrived on a saturday night at the door and were able to get in right away.

My bf and I were blown away - it was great. We are definitely going back.

I have to give City Lights Theatre's production of "Dead Man Walking" a standing ovation (aka 5 stars). This show was very well done; the staging and acting was superb. This was a hard topic to tackle, but they handled it with intelligence, respect and dignity.

I want to say, that I'm very picky about my theater. If anything brings me out of the moment, it is hard for me to stay involved. And that being said, I usually tune out at the mere mention of God or Jesus. Somehow this show was able to bring religion into a serious topic without alienating half the audience.
